I have a question about rooting the Nexus 5G or any Nexus phone. I thought I read somewhere that the upside to getting a nexus phone was that they (Google) did not object to rooting a phone or running a custom ROM (?), versus lets say a Samsung Galaxy S6, where the manufacturer and the service provider lock them down and make it very difficult to root.
Is there any truth to this?

Correct... Google will rma your phone as long as you send it back in running stock firmware (as long as you flash the factory image and relock the bootloader before returning assuming you have a valid rma). Other manufacturers may not warranty the phone if the knox counter (triggered after unlocking the bootloader is present).

I can confirm that google does indeed take a phone back if it is rooted. Youre warranty is not void if youre bootloader is unlocked and is rooted. I did it with a nexus 5 and i also contacted customer support before purchasing my 5x to confirm that this policy is still around

Is there non root way of doing it?
you don't need root to flash the factory original images.
Unlock bootloader, flash stock image, lock bootloader. Done

yes, the repair centre changed it to yakjuxw
but it went in a yakju
You're not the only one. I got my screen replaced and got the phone sent back with the bootloader unlocked. Not a big deal locking it (use 'fastboot oem lock' command) but they should have done that when the device left their end. They certainly will raise a fuss if they saw a device with an unlocked bootloader sign.
I have it on video

It does
the samsung code is only on 4.0.1
most google codes are on 4.0.2, some on 4.0.3, plus their "repair" was a bodge.
You're funny.
No matter how much complaining, videos, etc, so what? You can easily convert it back, also what do you expect Samsung to do now? Give you money? Apologize? Give you a hand job?
Relax. Sheesh.

I have read several threads and blog posts about samsung galaxy nexus reception issues. I just got mine last week and I see terrible reception on ATT. At the same time, my good ole G1 gives me full five bars.
Is this a software issue or a hardware issue? If its a hardware issue, I will try getting a replacement.
Also, I unlocked the bootloader (may be I shouldn't have right away!), installed aokp (which has autocomp set to 0) and that doesn't show any significant improvement either.
Also considering that I have already unlocked the bootloader, is it enough to flash back the original galaxy nexus rom images and do a 'fastboot oem lock' to return it to a pristine state? Or is my warranty void now? I do not want to end up with 2 phones, if samsung decides that I did void my warranty.

You should return to stock ROM, relock bootloader and unroot, then see if you still have reception issues. If the issues persist, it is probably a hardware issue.

I did go through that process and I still see signal issues. I'm going to go to the T-Mobile store and check with one of their SIMs to see if I see any improvement.
So once I restore the firmware to the original images and lock the bootloader, is there still a way for samsung to detect that I had rooted the phone etc? Is this as good as brand new and valid for a replacement?
I see the developer addition of the Note 4 is available. I do not want a Verizon sucks conversation, but iI am interested in why Verizon locks the bootloader. Does Verizon have an official answer? Does it have something to fo with lost revenue from taking Verizon completely out of my OS? How about those reading this with much more knowledge then I. What are some legitimate benefits to a locked bootloader?
BTW....I do agree....its my phone and I should be able to do what I want with it.
they locked to keep our XDA members from messup the phone from flashing and tweaking then return for exchange when bricked the device ...lol

Officially? It's hard to get Verizon to address any of their customer concerns "officially."
There is some rather reasonable supposition. 1) Verizon sees enterprise customers as their bread and butter. Enterprise customers demand security. Unlocked bootlockers are not secure. 2) Verizon and other carriers are concerned about excessive warranty claims. There's a thread somewhere here where someone tried to root their brand new Note 4. Most people don't even know why they want to root, but they'll do it anyway without the necessary knowledge beforehand.
Was that VZ Note 4 they tried t root bricked?
I'm getting a VZ Pixel XL (hold the "you're buying it from where" comments, please) because I need to move rather quickly from a Note 7 to a less hostile phone. I'm paying full price, so I can avoid VZ's 2-year lockdown via contract. I'm hearing that, even for those that ordered right away from Google, their deliveries are extending into November, and I need a new phone before then (even assuming the reordering process reopened).
Is it possible to put the Stock Google Pixel software on this phone (assuming, if I understand this correctly, that either someone figures out how to unlock the bootloader, or VZ lets me do it, since I own the whole phone)?
I don't fully understand this 'locked bootloader' thing, even though I've been reading XDA for quite a while, so I don't even know if I'll attempt to do this - for now my question is academic. "Can it be done?"
Verizon locked the bootloader and I am not sure if @jcase or @beaups will try to unlock the bootloader. The phone has yet to be released. It has HTC drivers and we will in the near future find out if it can be unlocked or not. Jcase mentioned to buy the google phone from google if you want unlocked bootloader.
Right now, if you want a solid unlockable/rootable Verizon phone get a HTC 10, either unlocked do s-off and convert or buy Verizon and s-off it.
Verizon Pixel will NOT be unlockable, odds of it getting unlocked is unknown.
You won't be able to flash teh Google edition firmware without s-off/unlock, which it is unkown if we will see that.
Thanks for the information. It's not crucial that I put the Google software in it - more of a curious question for me. The few times I rooted a phone was to install BusyBox or Titanium; I really didn't fully exploit what root can do, lest I create a brick.
Given that I need to get into something *right now*, I can put up with VZW's, er, 'idiosyncrasies' to get what I want right away, and out of the Note 7.

The Pixel you buy from Verizon has the "google software" . The only two differences it has from the one sold directly from Google is a locked bootloader and several Verizon apps that can be uninstalled. The locked bootloader will prevent you from installing custom software or rooting.
Didn't the Nexus 6 purchased from Google direct come with a locked bootloader? Same as the one bought from Verizon direct. What makes anyone think the Pixel will be any different? They all come locked....

All bootloaders are locked when shipped. The difference is the Verizon bootloader will be encrypted, rendering it unlockable without the key.
It was all just an illusion

@jcase what are the odds of both the Google sold Pixel and VZW sold Pixel having the exact same hardware and software out of the box and then the process of activating either phone on VZW is what renders the bootloader not unlockable (not sure if this is even possible), pushes the bloat from the play store (that can be done) and controls the software update process (this can be done as well)?
If this is true, then buying a Pixel from VZW and activating it on a non-VZW network would be the equivalent of buying it from Google.

Yeah I don't see that as evidence until it's in hand. We all know nobody at Verizon that we have ever talked to has ever understood the difference between carrier lock and bootloader lock. At this point it's all speculation because a Verizon rep isn't a reliable source.

I have looked around and can't seem to find a model that is cdma compatible with sprint that has the ability to unlock the bootloader. Seems the A505U carrier variant can't unlock the bootloader. I've tried doing the 7 day trick but it doesn't seem to work for the A505U sadly(looking for additional confirmation on this).
Also on the look out for this, but it's not looking very promising. ?
I wish there were an unlocked varient for the US i just purchased one and didnt realize till when i looked at the model number that its for Europe
So the Sprint model can not be unlocked and rooted? I haven't owned a Samsung device for several years but the A50 peaked my interest. Looks like the same scenario, GSM models can be unlocked and CDMA can not.

I've seen atleast one other report that the 505U on Sprint and Verizon has locked BL. I've been told in telegram this si the case to. I have tested the 7 day trick extensively and it doesn't work on A505U. Did you have to do something special to get the oem unlock in dev options?

Sprint Samsung A50 BL Unlock NO GO!
Ok so I am now an employee of Sprint. The information I have gathered is as follows. When Sprint requested this device from Samsung in their lengthy list of requirements one of them was that the ability to unlock the bootloader be removed. The reasoning behind this was that they did not want the end users to wind up " Accidentally " bricking their devices. As per insurance guidelines any attempt to modify the devices hardware and or software voids your warranty and your insurance that you carry on the device. So basically what they are saying is hey Android / Samsung community because of several hundred unintelligent people ruining their own devices we are removing the option in general. I am currently pushing to see if we can work with Samsung to push a firmware update that will allow this feature to be accessible as the whole point of having an android device it the open platform and being able to do these things. I really wish more cell phone manufacturers were like HTC which allows you to unlock the boot loader on any of their devices and even provide you a tool to turn S-Off on their website. But we cannot all be great.... Anyway hope that clears it up for ya'll and I am fighting the good fight on your behalf. P.S. I have the Samsung A50 and I was really not happy when I found out I could not root it.

Here in 2021 looks like things didn't go well :'(
My old A505U is just off contract and the "OEM Unlock" switch is missing from the developer options menu. Additionally, none of the normal methods for getting it to appear have worked for me. (I have tried reflashing the stock firmware, the whole messing with the date&time and updating, factory reset + login + wait 2 to 14 days)
I have spent hours on the phone with both Samsung and my previous carrier, but with no results; none of their support people have the knowledge/are allowed to help with unlocking the bootloader.
I am getting very discouraged that this old phone of mine will ever run anything open :'(
