URGENT - Full and clear instructions to flash stock Sony ROM and bootloader. - Sony Xperia M

I tried installing CM 12.1 nightly on my Sony C2004, but now none of the SIMs are detected!
I decided to take it back to the nearest service center. But they said I have done something against their 'terms of service'. The only option will be to replace the board, which will set me back Rs. 6000 +, for which I can easily get a new Android phone.
I tried using Sony PC Companion, but it fails to detect the phone.
Please provide full detailed steps with relevant links for a newbie in the forum to flash his own phone, which Sony support condemned to the depths of hell. (I could not understand the posts already here that speak of Flashtool.)

Today I realised that not only will this flashing void my warranty, but also will give me the option to throw my phone into the nearby forest :crying:

Full uninstall King Root, and use towelroot. It's better, and it don't install unnecessary apps, try it and tell me!
Then rooting your phone with towelroot, install Root Uninstaller from PlayStore and use it to uninstall the system apps that u dont need.

The phone never started up. It is hung on the flying ribbons animation. I'm using Sony PC companion to re-flash the firmware.

It is up and running again. I'm using Towelroot this time. It also works.
What all can I do with root access to optimize the performance of this phone???

Trying to Root - Driver install issue

I've literally tried every method on the internet to root the GSM Galaxy Nexus and I keep getting stuck at the very beginning: I can't get past the driver step and making sure the computer recognizes the phone as an ADB device. I've tried Samsung driver install, pdaNET drivers and just about any other method and I still can't get my computer to show that the device is a ADB device and therefore cannot root the phone.
Its a Play Store Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.4
all help is incredibly appreciated. I've been working on this problem since Friday.
I'm on a 64bit Windows 7 on a Dell XPS 15 computer
Jubakuba said:
If your Command Prompt displays the message "waiting for device" your driver wasn't successfully installed.
Close the Command Prompt window and open Device manager while your phone is still plugged in. (Search for it using the search option).
Right Click the "Android" option and select Update Driver. Choose to "Browse My Computer" and "Let Me Pick From A List." Pick the Samsung driver with the newest date and install it. Now retry the code above.

Try this.
I've tried updating via device manager. The problem is, it always says its up to date or when I manually select one it still doesn't work. Should I just not pick the newest driver? Pick an older version when selecting a new driver?
EDIT: also, another issue is that with Wug's when it searches for the adb device is searches in an odd folder that doesn't exist and I can't figure out how to change where it looks
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Or download the GNex Toolkit. Was having driver issues as well today (they were installed but for some strange reason Windows didn't recognize it anymore) and used the ones that come with this toolkit to reinstall through device manager. Of course as always with these things, use at your own risk, fiddling with drivers can be tricky .
What are you getting from your adb devices command? I had a problem with mine showing as consistantly offline. I had to change from a frontal USB port (usually a bad idea anyway) to a rear port. Some device/computer combinations make adb unhappy when using a USB hub, which most frontal USB ports essentially are.

When I use WugFresh and check for ADB it checks a nonexistent directory and returns an error. I found another method on google (I think the webpage was Foolproof method or something) and I check through command prompt and when I do it says List of Devices: then a blank line underneath
EDIT: just installed the GNex toolkit and drivers, plugged in, adb devices and it returned the blank line
EDIT 2.0: I just witnessed the most beautiful thing in the world. I plugged in again and it miraculously worked. I think I might tear up and cry a little
Yeah, for some reason the USB Driver in the Android SDK does NOT work. This was incredibly frustrating when I was trying to unlock my phone originally. I spent probably 30 minutes googling and trying different driver downloads.
I have attached the ones I used that DO work.
So here is the new story:
unlocked bootloader but it did not factory reset. It rebooted and my phone is as it was.
When I went to do fastboot boot boot.gsm.img, It says boot.img downloads and then it takes me to the google logo screen and gets stuck

I've never rooted an already installed ROM for the Galaxy Nexus, but might I ask why you're not just installing a pre-rooted ROM from recovery? It'll save you a lot of headaches for sure. Even if you're not into custom builds, there's plenty of AOSP pre-rooted builds out there

I don't think the pre-rooted ROMs get OTAs, or do they? I've been trying to root on stock so I can still get OTAs and I like how stable it is. I've messed with other ROMs on other phones and I almost always go to stock or CM but I'd rather stick to stock on this for now
Okay I can understand that. However do realize that once you install an OTA, your root will probably be gone and you'll have to root manually once more ...
i actually delete any driver and use the pdanet works just fine, i had the same problem that you. is just mather of patience.

Man.. as easy as this:
Go to bixie's jb rom thread, he has there linked a supersu+busybox cwm flashable zip, dl that and copy it to the device. Dl also a non-touch cwm image.
Unlock your bootloader, bla bla follow guides on how to set up/use fastboot, BOOT cwm (not flash it) with 'fastboot boot cwm.img', flash that supersu zip, reboot. Done, you rooted jb, install voodoo root keeper or something, back up root. Thats one way how to root a Nexus. You can even relock your bootloader after you finished customizing.

TCL P600 / Alcatel One Touch Snap 7025D Root and GAPPS

Root and GAPPS instruction for TCL P600
Since TCL P600, TCL P606 and Alcatel One Touch Snap 7025D are the same phones I just write about TCL P600 now. But it's working for both.
TCL P600 root package: http://www.4shared.com/zip/3HRtqraE/TCL_P600_Root.html
HowTo Root TCL P600:
- Extract the file
- Start the flash tool in extracted folder
- Make sure under options it is choosen “with battery”
- In FlashTool load scatter file contained in folder
- Click checkboxes of BOOTIMG and RECOVERY
- Doubleclick on BOOTIMG and refer to TCL-P600_130417__boot_patched_130508-162244.img
- Doubleclick on RECOVERY and refer to TCL-P600_130417__recovery_130508-162244.img
- Switch off mobile and unplug it from usb
- Click “download” in flash tool
- Plug in usb in phone
- If you get a green circle from flash tool saying OK you’re ready with root shell
- Unplug phone and reboot into CWM
- Start Droidtools and plugin usb to phone again
- Install superuser of your choice into phone.
- Ready – you have full root to phone.
If you experience any problems please check if you used the right drivers. Please check drivers attached in folders. Only use them.
Here is the JB gapps zip for flashing with CWM: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
Full instruction of getting a well working TCL P600:
1. First of all I updated the phone with TCL updater to the latest firmware.
2. I rooted it as I described before.
3. I deleted lots of China Apps and also under system/media bootup sounds and some - for me - other stuff not needed in order to get more space on system partition.
4. I installed GAPPS through CWM. I did it with this one: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
After rebooting I got crash of google search. I ignored it and added my google account. After opening playstore then I got update for google search. After updating there is no crashing anymore.
All other gapps are working quite well. I tested GPS for the TCL P600 and was really suprised it works quite fast and accurate.
The only thing: There is no A-GPS setting. Let's say: There is no GPS setting at all. You can only switch GPS on and off. Settings are not included. Maybe this will be unlocked with a modded rom.
I'm now testing all functions in detail but up to now it works really great.
Hope you got it also up to this point. After all steps this phone is really perfect.

If you brick your phone you have a brick Not my fault. I don't take responsibility of that my instruction will work for you. It worked for me. So now it's up to you.

Hey i want to know if this recovery can be ported to my phone the alcatel one touch fierce it is the same as th one touch snap/7025d just without the 8mp camera and splash water proofing everything else is the same i had tried the aoutomatic port for CRR recovery but when it flashed the recovery i got a security error on my alcatel that says "error 101 unaouthorized software installed "it would not boot upand was bricked i bought the same phone again and i am wondering how y'all ported it to the fierces sister phone the one touch snap .thanks and have a great day
I don't know about porting possibility. I guess there is no way. This thread is not about changing the ROM but just how to root the TCL. There is no custom ROM out actually. So I don't see chances to port. Why should this be necessary? Is the stock ROM having problems?

Anyone know where to download Custom Boot Loader and Newer version of OS?
I have huge problem with this phone. There is all the time problem with memory card. I am using kingston class 10, 16gb memory but from time to time, after i take some picture or use default gallery, i get message that my memory card is corrupted. I need to restart phone and everything is ok, but sometimes it require even 3-5-7 restarts and its really anoying. Cant take pictures, use ringtone from memory cartd etc.
I tried with official updater but still use 4.2.1 version. Anyone have any newer custom rom?

[Q] How to unlock bootloader 2014 (R800X)

Yeah I'm a bit confused at the methods. One guide tells you to use the official website, other threads take you to that same one. I havent had an Xperia Play since late 2012 - early 2013 and I found this one back in my old stuff. Sony website tells you to check with the dialer and see if it says yours is allowed to be unlocked. Mine has NOTHING. So what I'm supposed to suffer about 3-4 years later in the future because Verizon still decides they want to continue hiding whatever secrets this device packs?
I'm trying to experiment with custom roms. Stock is boring and would also love to root (which I can't because I'm on 2.3.4 since I'm an idiot).
We didn't even know about jellybean when I first had this thing. Now we have KitKat which is also aimed and claimed to run on a minimum of 512mb ram.
Any help?
Anybody? Its very frustrating as this phone has some potential.

Hi Crossvxm,
You can definitely unlock the bootloader on your phone. The Verizon Xperia Play doesn't show the bootloader unlock status in the service menu, but it's been confirmed in lots of other posts where R800x owners have unlocked their bootloaders. I have also done it personally with the Sony Official method. Here's the link to the Sony website if you want to give it a go: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/
You can also root your R800x while it's still on 2.3.4 using the Eroot method. See this thread for more information on Eroot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240285. Please make sure to hit the thanks button for Nabeel, wym986, Vokal1992, and any others who helped bring this root method to us. The direct download link for the Eroot version that I have used is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jnwl5r3fnsssbuu/Eroot_V1.3.4.exe. If you want to check the MD5 checksum after downloading it, it should be: 459d8bdda203a5f5e9d28231fa6df6b0
Here are some instructions that I made for my friend to help him root his R800x, but the thread mentioned above also has instructions...
-Eroot Instructions-
1. Disable the anti-virus software on your computer to prevent it from stopping the root exploit
2. Go to your phone Settings/ Applications/Developer Options and Make USB Debugging is enabled. (I don't know if it's necessary, but I also check the box to allow Unknown Sources).
3. Plug your phone into the computer with a USB cable and make sure your phone is recognized by the computer before proceeding
4. Right click on the Eroot application and run it as Administrator
5. Eroot should recognize that your phone is connected and after a brief moment, it should prompt you to click on a green “Root” button. Click that button and it will show steps 1-4. Once it completes its process, your phone should be rooted with the Superuser app installed.
(PS: After it roots the phone, it will turn off Wifi. Just go back into your phone's settings and toggle the Wifi back on to get it working again).
I had some trouble getting the Superuser binaries to update after completing the above steps... so I used Titanium Backup Pro to wipe data/clear cache and uninstall the Superuser app. I then went to the Play store and reinstalled it. (This is the Superuser version I am using and it works fine: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.superuser&hl=en ).
Good luck.

Cool man. I hope you can get the bootloader unlocked and get rooted so you can experiment with some of the newer ROM'S. I recently bought my Xperia Play really cheap off eBay and I'm having fun playing with it. I'm really only using it as a gaming device because I have a rooted/ROM'ed Samsung Note 2 as my daily driver.
Let us know how things turn out.

It worked, my bootloader seems to have successfully unlocked. I also used the root tool you mentioned and in about 3 tries it actually rooted it! And BTW, i found this Xperia Play in a box from when I moved to NYC and i forgot all about it. I also use it for games that cant be playes on a touchscreen like Megaman X4 and Super Mario World. But I use my G2 for everything else. Its just hard to run and jump on Mario with touchscreen buttons when you have to use your entire thumb for both of those and your other thumb to move.
Now my question is, how do i install a custom recovery? I used the X-Parted apk and a CWM installer apk from the same dev, and it seems to flash the recovery, but when i click for it to reboot into recovery the device reboots normally. Also, when I try to manually reboot it into the custom recovery, it just powers off after the android symbol and restarts normally. Has me stumped as to why.

Cool man. That's great that you can ressurect your Xperia Play and enjoy using it again. I'm having a blast with using emulators. My friend recently introduced me to Quake and I've been playing it a lot lately. (If you have any interest in Quake, I just started a thread in the Theme and Apps section with instructions on how to get it running on the Xperia Play using the FTEDroid port and Gamekeyboard+, which allows you play it with the phone's hard key controllers). .
Anyway... I also had trouble using the Xparts app to install CWM. I found another thread that provides a command script to install it, and it's worked perfectly for me every time.
Here are some instructions that I typed up a while back when I was helping my friend root his R800x... The credit for this should go to the original poster in the thread and to all of the people who helped develop the CWM .
--------------------------------------------
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CWM
**I believe that around 2 MB of Internal Storage is needed to install this CWM version on the Xperia Play
1. Go to this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390771 ) to find and download the file "CWM-Install.rar"
2. Unzip the contents of the downloaded package into a file folder where you can find it later
3. Make sure USB debugging is enabled on your phone and plug your rooted R800x into the computer via USB cable
3. Navigate to the folder on your computer where you unzipped the .rar file. (Per the above thread's instructions, you need to run the command script for "install-cwm1.cmd." You can do this by locating that file and double clicking on it. This should start a command terminal window to install CWM...just follow the prompts in the command terminal and you should have CWM installed on your phone
**In order to boot into the CWM Recovery on the Stock Kernel, you need to press the phone's Power Button and then repeatedly tap the Volume Down button as it boots up. Once you are in the CWM recovery, use the Volume keys to navigate up and down, the Home key to select, the Back key to return to the previous menu.

Worked 100%! I owe you big time! I am now running Super Jellybean 8.0 along with Turbo Kernel and honestly the performance on this rom alone is "godly!" I first tried Racing Speed rom but reading on the features of Super JellyBean made me want to try it out. Although the touchpad support breaks (no more Mario 64...) its overall performance makes up for the loss. Either way i do use the buttons more anyways on ps1 and snes games.
I now feel like the Xperia Play "caught up" with my other devices, it was the only Gingerbread device i have touched in a year.
I would love to see the KitKat rom thats currently a work in progress someday work completely.
Since KK was said to be able to run on 512mb ram, i think it would further improve this device's potential.
That's good to hear you're rooted and unlocked and glad I could help. I know that I found it frustrating when I was trying to figure out how to root and unlock the bootloader for our Verizon version of this phone. I kept reading that you couldn't root it on build 2.3.4, but finally stumbled onto Eroot. It seems there's not a lot of Verizon R800x users in the Xperia Play threads... so we got to stick together, lol.
if i unlock the bootloader i can install twrp with problems? im thinking og buying an xperia play r800x to install twrp and android 4.4.4 with cm 11 designed for xperia play
Crossvxm, can I mail you my xperia play? I wanted to know if you'd unlock the bootloader and install a custom rom. I want a more modern version of the android os running on the play. Please help

Sony companion and use the repairoption. If you get a fail than try the repairoption with the option no booting phone.

Hey guys. I have never been this frustrated in my life.
So, a while ago, I rooted phone and for some reason unlocked bootloader. Everything has worked fine until now, when phone is randomly tapping the screen, and since today it's really warm and draining full battery in an hour or two.
I don't have anything, files and such, left. Also, I can't open Flashtool so my thought to relock bootloader wasn't an option either. I just want to completely erase everything and pick a Sony update for now.
What do I do...? :crying:
I just need Flashtool to start but it won't friggin start. I used it fine before but now it's not reacting when I try.

FT not starting is probably either a temporary server thing, (since it does the whole github, etc. thing at startup), or just an update issue. I've found it pretty smooth and easy to update, if you follow the instructions on homepage. I'm not so sure about PC companion, with unlocked bl and custom ROM, but might be worth a try if it's already set up. Personally, with unlocked bl, I would just use fastboot, flash a custom kernel/recovery, and flash a stock based ROM. The whole thing would be done in less than 10 minutes. Let me know if you don't know how.

Hi,
It may be that your touch screen is dying.
I had smt like this with my z1 as well. it would randomly register touches in the upper area of the screen.
after a few days this area stopped responding to touches completely.
Now the phone it self is usable just a small area on top of the screen is unresponsive to touches, I have to use landscape mode to push some of the buttons.

Did you tested it with not booting phone?
If you take this option you need to connect the z1c in flash- or fastbootmode.
The last time it did works on my z1c with bootloop after flashing a custom.

I have never been able to start it after I last used it like.. 6-7 months ago.
But yeah, if you'd like to walk me through this, that'd be awesome. I just want to flush it down the toilet right now.
If Flashtool was working it'll be fine, then it could be fixed. But I can't even run the program since that last time. It's weird.

Install this on PC - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48915118#post48915118, then follow steps 2-3 here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/son...ock-5-1-ub-t3203247/post62853364#post62853364, using these files:
CM boot -https://mega.nz/#!k0cTUQbS!5XUZhTEK4xBKVBSeO83TEHE3xs9JEpvxt3g1Sc8tVH8
TWRP img -https://mega.nz/#!E4UQwIoZ!UFpur2wY3tIAU7SdjuEg5fUA6N4BAVwX_TeK_CFpTyo
You'll need to have a ROM file on your SD card in the phone, so if you can't boot, copy the file onto card w/ PC, then put it in. The above instructions get you into recovery, then you can flash stock ROM. Just pick any prf from the 'general' forum.
As far as FT, I bet an update would fix you. There's been a few recent changes. Check the thread -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746
Note: when you connect in fastboot for the first time, if you're using Windows, you'll get 'installing driver...' If you've been using FT, the driver is already on your computer, so click 'skip Windows update search', and computer should find it.

I don't quite get it. I don't need Flashtool at all to fix this? I downloaded 2 files, boot and twrp2870. What else and what to do? I just want it bootloader relocked if possible so I can get "real" updates.

If you want to just get FT working and use that, go for it. Fastboot is a computer program you can use to flash kernels and recovery, (and for some other stuff). So, if you had an SD card with a stock-based flashable ROM file on it, (any ROM listed as a 'prf' in the 'general' forum), you could put it in the phone, and use fastboot to get recovery, then open recovery and flash your ROM file. Then you'd be back on stock ROM. It's just another option. I guess to re-lock bl, you probably want FT anyway, so just go for that if you want.

Thanks for the answer. But I can't use Flashtool, I can't open the program itself. I don't know how to fix this or if anyone has a clue why it's doing that. Note, it used to work a few months ago, and I didn't even use it often.

Like I said, you probably need an update. FT homepage has links and instructions for latest update. There's been a few revisions lately. Yo just have to download the latest version, install, then download a patch file and copy it to FT directory, (replacing the one that's there). It probably will work fine then.

I see.. Well that's strange, I've never had it not even start I guess you could try uninstall and reinstall. Have you posted in FT thread? From what I've seen in that thread, Androxyde and others are always quick to help.
Anyway, you can also try the fastboot option...

Root + twrp + bootloader unlock + twrp flashable stock rom - marhsmallow

If you are on Lollipop, this guide is NOT for you!
Almost none of this is my work, I just collect it and put it together in one place and I'm writing a small how-to get things done.
PLEASE ONLY PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!!!!
ONLY FOR ZX551ML
Bootloader unlock:
Currently the only way I was able to get ROOT on the phone was by installing it from TWRP which required an unlocked bootloader, so the first step is to get the bootloader unlocked, to do this please follow this steps:
1) Enable USB debugging - If you do not know what is that and how to do it, you should probably STOP right here.
2) Download and extract: Unlock 6_ZX551ML.ZIP
3) From the extracted folder run unlock.bat (This will restart your phone into fastboot mode, downgrade the bootloader and unlock it)
4) When step 3 is completed, you need to run restore.bat
If everything went on correctly your boot screen should be inverted (white background, black Asus text). This was the most risky part. I only have my phone and it worked, but if something goes wrong here you might end up bricking your phone, so please take extreme care, always read the messages on the screen!!!!!
Custom Recovery:
1) Now to get a custom recovery, please download TWRP-3.0.2-M1-Z00A.img.
2) Put your phone into bootloader mode, if your phone is currently in use, just use the following commands:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
Alternatively you can power off the phone, remove the USB cable. Power it back on while holding the volume up button.
3) once your phone if in bootloader mode please use the following command:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery TWRP-3.0.2-M1-Z00A.img
4) Use the vol up & down to select "RECOVERY"
5) Use the power button (short press) to reboot to TWRP
ROOTING
1) Download BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328-patch-by-shakalaca-for-zenfone2-6.0_(1).zip
2) In recovery select Advanced -> Sideload
3) From your computer use the following commands:
Code:
adb sideload "BETA-SuperSU-v2.74-2-20160519174328-patch-by-shakalaca-for-zenfone2-6.0_(1).zip"
4) Once it's completed installing, restart the phone to system
FLASHABLE STOCK ROM
If you have TWRP installed and you want to flash the latest stock ROM, you will need to, make sure you un-root your phone from the supersu app, reboot to recovery and sideload the zip. You can also copy the zip to your phone and install it from twrp. When installing the stock rom, your bootloader will be locked again, so you will need to unlock it (if you wish), also you will need to root again, because the root is lost. However the modified stock rom will NOT remove the custom recovery giving you freedom to flash whatever you like in the future...
XPOSED
Xposed on our device won't work if we have SuperSu installed. If you want to use Xposed modules you will need to use PHH's SuperUser instead. All files required for Xposed/Magisk/Phh's SuperUser are available in the Xposed folder.
Available modified stock rom versions:
UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.141-user-TWRP.zip - Updated: 2016-Oct-07
UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.197-user-TWRP.zip - Updated: 2016-Dec-16
Files can be downloaded from: here
Again, please proceed on your own risk.
Special tanks and credits to all the guys who made this possible, namely:
@sorg @social-design-concepts @shakalaca - For bootloader unlock
@jrior001 for the TWRP
@shakalaca - For the modified SuperSU package.

Yes I'm using Magisk, but even with it I wasn't able to use Google Pay. To get back to non inverted, you will need to flash the locked bootloader.

While essentially true the user can always use a different boot animation by flashing one via twrp. There might even be one somewhere of the unmodified asus screen.
Can anyone confirm the flashable Rom mentioned in Post #1 is MM 6.0.1? I ask because my phone upgraded itself right after I booted it up and I wondered if it was on a newer version than the downloadable one. Pretty sure the update was only security updates given it was only around 80mb.
The actuall boot screen is only a couple of seconds long while the boot animation shown

Well as usual the linux users drew the short straw. The shell script is for mac users. I decided to see about running the lines manually but never even reached the "danger zone". As soon as I did an "adb reboot bootloader" I followed up with "sudo fastboot devices" (some linux distro's need sudo..some don't)....and nothing shows up although I can clearly see the device is hooked up and in fastboot mode as well as the fact the adb reboot bootloader worked. I swap out one of my other devices and check things...they show up fine in fastboot....ok...so what's missing from this picture?
*update* solved by updating the ubuntu adb and fastboot binaries from here: https://github.com/simmac/minimal_adb_fastboot/tree/master/linux
*update2* bootloader unlocked, supersu flashed and verified. Much appreciated.
I ran the bootloader unlock and it appeared to work. Now it keeps booting back into the bootloader. I can't seem to get it to boot normal. Suggestions?
Nevermind, I didn't realize that I needed to run restore.bat while still in the bootloader. It is booting now! I was able to follow your guide and it is now rooted.
Regarding the marshmallow zip you include. I have a couple questions.
- For the modified stock version that will keep the recovery do I just need to flash it from recovery?
- Do I need to unroot before flashing this modified stock marshmallow?
Thanks!

Happy to read you got it booting, by the time I got to answer you seemed to git it figured out.
Regarding the zip, yes flash from recovery and you don't need to unroot before, but you will need to root after flashing.
However I do suggest you make a backup before flashing jsut in case....

I'm assuming the file is just for folks who are on lollipop who want to upgrade? Didn't see any need to flash it since already on 6.0.1 and have it rooted...unless I'm missing something again.
I read this after I went to 6.0.1 from Asus's manual download and update process. I can't get ADB to connect in the OS (developer mode never displays, even though it tells me I'm a developer after doing kernel ver. button process). I tried to get adb devices -l in fastboot and recovery, and it wont discover it. I've tried multiple windows drivers (including the one that worked when I flashed the firmware the first time) to no avail. Any ideas?

If windows doesn't see the phone when in recovery there is something wrong, this can be:
1) Wrong driver
2) Damaged USB cable
3) Damaged USB port.
When you are in recovery you should see the phone with adbm if you are in fastboot you should see the phone with:
Code:
fastboot devices
If nothing works you have the nuclear option.
Manually download the original firmware from Asus website: https://www.asus.com/support/Download/39/1/0/26/BXbNqJplzZiLmk6G/32/
copy the zip to an Sd card.
1) Now Turn Off your phone and boot into recovery mode by pressing Power+Volume UP.
2) Now in recovery mode choose to apply update from sdcard.
3) Now select the zip file.
4) Now wait until the process complete and then Reboot the phone.
5) Done!

More or less true, but somehow I was on a 6.0.1 version which is now gone from the firmware list of Zenfone, meaning I have updated from 6.0.1 to 6.0.1
Again now I see there is a new firmware released yesterday if I have the time I will patch that system image as well so it can be upgraded with TWRP.

Actually most if them can be. Here is a print screen of the ones I have disabled on my phone hover I have a zenpad z380c which I use as my car dashboard and on that one o have disabled almost of all of the apps, except zenhome, audio manager and the file manager.
Yes I was surprised to find out that there is almost no zoom community.

I'm actually enjoying mobile managers auto startup managing...it's done a good job of keeping 10000 things from running at startup that don't need to although "Startup Manager" would do a similar job for free. I'm liking the zenui launcher and calling screen so don't want to break anything related to that...the phone's been performing exceptionally well for days on end with no required reboots. Been very impressed. Previously been fighting with a T-mobile V10 and an Alcatel Idol 3...the v10 had spontaneous reboots...the idol had a stock rom with a bunch of lag in it....tiny to nothing development on both of those.
What about Zentalk, ZenChoice, PhotoCollage, MyAsus Service center, Clean Master, Audiowizard and Bug Reporter?

I use tasker for that, but yes I agree as a whole is not bad, this is my 4rd Asus product (Zenfone 4, Zenfone 2, Zoom and Zenpad) and overall I'm quite impressed with how they perform, just the support from Asus isn't really the top of the cream... they released MM when other were releasing N... so yeah a bit of sour taste, otherwise happy. Well from the lack of posts it appears you and I ARE the zenfone zoom community. Any idea where the system updates get stored after downloading? I thought in /cache based on regular zenfone posts but was unable to see it. I've got one available but it has to be modified for twrp compatibility as well as unrooting temporarily.
