So when my screen is off it will occasionally turn on all by itself. Has anyone else had this happen? Any advice on how to stop this from happening?

Need more details please.
When the screen turns on, is the phone in your pocket, on a table, on a dock?
Certain actions will turn the screen on momentarily. Plugging/unplugging the phone into a charger or dock, receiving a text message or call. If the screen is turning on for any other reason, then it's probably an app doing something it shouldn't be doing.

I've seen it happen when out on the table, not connected to a charger or dock and not in conjunction with receiving any notifications. I'm not sure if it ever happens while in my pocket.

It could be an app waking the screen, or it could be some sort of hardware problem.
Do you use Greenify or any other type of process killing app? They'll wake the screen in order to kill apps.
You may want to consider a factory reset and try not installing your apps for a while to see if the issue still occurs. If so, it could be hardware problems.

Thank you for the feedback, I'll give it a try ☺

Anyone else have this issue? I couldn't find anything on it. As long as I'm charging, my screen constantly turns black. Only locking, then unlocking will turn the screen back on, but it usually just goes black again.
This only happens while charging. Stock Froyo, but happened just as common with 2.1.
Any insight is appreciated.

it sounds like it is just timing out like when you have it unplugged correct?
if you want to make it so your screen stays on while charging go to settings>applications>development> check stay awake
If i am totally off on what you are asking can you be more specific about the problem.
Thank you. I do have it set to stay awake. The screen turns black, but actions can be taken (just can't see what actions). So if I hit the lock button and hit it again, it will turn back on for a split second and then go black again. It is very strange.

Is that helpful omega?

i have the same problem and it has nothing to do with the timing on the phone, it turns off but u can still hear the "click" when u touch the phone, supposedly a few phones have had the same problem and is a problem with the connection that the chargin port is deffective or something like that, the best thing you can do is return the phone to where you purchased it from and tell them you have a defective unit, there is nothin you can do about it
HELP!!!
I don't know what goes wrong...in recent days, the screen auto turn itself back on even I press the right side button to close it... I don't know what to do now.. is there some app run itself to turn the screen on??? it's very annoying.. how can I found out the root cause for it and fix it???
Thanks a lot!!!
Your USB port is probably messed up and your screen is turning on because the phone thinks its charging.
Clean out your port and make sure the connector is straight.

You mean physically clean the USB port on the bottom of the phone? But the screen auto on issue happens even when my phone is not plugged in USB.... Thanks

El Daddy suspects the USB port is somehow dirty enough to make the phone *think* it's being charged, wich causes it to turn on the screen. You could test this by using the Tasker app: make it write to a logfile or give a toast/notification on the state power (any). If it logs a power source while there is no cable connected: tada.
I'm not sure if there is a permission in Android that allows an app to turn on the screen. I doubt it however.
Human interesting insight... is the application called "tanker"? Is there any free application can do this log?
I once thought there are some app that used my GPS or running in background to periodically turn my screen on....
It's called Tasker. You can download a trial version (7 days) here: http://tasker.dinglisch.net/download.html
it's hard to say how many applications can do this. you'd better list all you applications here.
How do I prevent the screen from turning on everytime I plug it into the charger, remove it, or it gets to 100%?
I plug it in all the time and I always have to turn the screen off or suffer the wrath of screen timeout. When I unplug to place it in my pocket, again, I must turn the screen off, WHY? The s3 comes with an LED indicator for a reason, so we don't have to have the screen on. WHO IS THIS FOR EXACTLY?!?!
I know this isn't the end of the world but it's annoying as hell! - I can't be the only one can I?
Plug it in.. press lock... it's one button press man.
Wrath of Screen Timeout? Explain?

Technically it's several presses a day. This is a legitimate question that I think a lot of people would at least be interested in. I know a lot of people have learned to live with it by now but we should have the option by now. I mean come on, is this Android or isn't it?

Just a spicy way of saying wait for the screen to turn off by itself. Any ideas?

I agree with you. Its really annoying. Ive been able to disable the screen turning on when unplug but havent been able to get it to stay off when plugging in. BTW this is on CM10.
How often do you charge your phone that you're pressing the button several times a day? I plug it in at night, ok good my alarms on, press off. Unplug it in the morning, oh new emails, unlock, etc, press off.
I don't think anyone has coded it out yet because it's not very noticeable. I spent some time searching but couldn't find anything, complaints or otherwise. Maybe try posting in a custom ROM and seeing if any of those guys have ideas? Anyways, free bump..
Screen Blanks off when charging/laid down

Go to the market and D/L Screebl (Screen Blank)
I set it for min and after 4 secs the screen blanks off. If I have the phone in a using/upright position, It will not go off...
Very Simple and useful app. The portrait and landscape settings are user adjustable. Try it. You'll like it!
Awesome suggestions guys, thank you so much! I'll be in Ohio for a few days but when I get back I'll try some of these out, Thx again.

I'll be testing some ideas I have. It might be hidden in the services.jar or framework.jar.

It's a lot to check. There are three .jar files I have decompiled. And there are hundreds of files that I have to go through.

Just a thought, what about using the proximity sensor to keep the screen off? I leave my phone screen down when it's charging and when you unplug it it's most likely going in your pocket right?

It still turns on. :\ it's like a wake lock. However it does shut off right away if the sensor is covered

I noticed that sometimes when I use the power button to turn off my screen, after 1-2secs later, the screen turns back on again automatically on its own. Happened quite a few times Already. Anyone with the same experience?
Haven't seen it happen.
Not seen this personally but there were some occasions when I picked up the phone and the screen was on. I'd assume I'd accidentally pressed the power button when picking it up.
Didbyou enable some options in S-Motion? Some of those options will turn screen on.

It happens mostly after a new app installation. The app is usually a spam and hence it keeps on turning the screen. Try to figure it own by removing apps one by one ever since the problem started.

Yes I think this could happen when "Quick Glance " is enabled. A few days ago, I was cleaning with a cloth the screen of my Note 2 and the screen went on (I haven't pressed accidentally the power button of my phone)
Daniel
No no its not quick glance.. It's almost like my power buttonmay be too ssensitive. And the screen typically turns on just 1-2secs after I turn off the screen manually. Doesn't happen frequently but still about once a day?

Have you installed any app like Pocket Sensor?
I use this amazing app, which can behave like this sometime when anything overshadows the proximity sensor.

I had exactly the same issue and maybe it's coincidence but the issue went away after I disabled Quick Glance. Been over a week now and this used to happen at least once a day.

I have EXACTLY..this problem.. it happens a few times a week to me.. Quite annoying sometimes.
I've been suspecting that its because of a application, namely, Kakao-talk, which is a IM application. I can't really recall my screen turning on suddenly when using any other app, but I will wait and see if it happens outside of Kakaotalk.
If the problem persists, i might hand it in to service...
its quite annoying sometimes. I have heard of other people having the same problem though...
i noticed my my galaxy nexus after updating to 4.2 buring more oil ! than 4.12 and i was wondering why

any other guy faced this issue ?
Had this problem occassionally on Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus. As far as I recall, this is android bug, sometimes triggered by third party apps. Google 'screen turning on by itself' to find out more.

I thought only I had this weird issue... its really annoying and my battery is getting drained up very fast...
since past couple of weeks i am getting a green mark on my screen. the screen turns back to normal in few hours. just curious to know the root cause. is anyone else experiencing the same problem?
This isn't q/a section.
When does it appear after you boot your phone?
Overheating maybe? Because of high temperatures screen can display wrong colors...
Try to turn it off, leave if for half an hour or so and then use it playing games or running some other CPU/GPU intensive apps. Tell us results.

no speific time. it happens randomly. stays like that for couple of hours.
First banch of phones bad a thermal problems with display.
If phone get heated, display would change color, it come backs to normal when it cools down.
Search for "Xperia S yellow tint" on google.
It wont damage your phone, its just annoying.

As somebody else mentioned, it could simply be an overheating problem, turn it off and open the back cover and put your phone under a fan or something, wait for it to cool down and then reboot. If this fails you can try reinstalling your ROM or repair using SUS, if all this fails then just send the phone back to where you got coz' it could be a hardware issue which can not be manually fixed
