Are the Kindle fire 2 and the Kindle Fire (7"/Non-HD)? - Kindle Fire 2 Q&A, Help and Troubleshooting

Pretty straightforward.. I just bought the base level Kindle Fire from amazon for the Black Friday special, the newest model. It wasn't labeled with a Generation as far as I can tell.... Is this the same as what this forum refers to as "Kindle 2", for second gen. Here is the link for the model I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Display-...F8&qid=1449868242&sr=8-1&keywords=kindle+fire
I just want to make sure any modding I do matches to the right forum. Thanks!

I own a kindle fire 2, and I can tell you that one is newer, the second gen has no camera and it doesn't hace any button besides the power. Its serial number begins with D026.

[Q] Question on installing 2nd gen os on 1st gen Kindle Fire.

Hi. I checked the Amazon site, and seeing as my Kindle isn't getting the 2nd generation os anytime soon, I saw you could download the package. Now the software package was labeled under Kindle Fire 2nd Gen. But it said you can drag and drop to the kindle software folder. Does this work over all devices, and if so, can I install that 2nd gen update on my 1st gen? Thanks.
I installed the AOSP version of Jelly Bean in hopes that I could fake the system into looking like a generation 2. There's something about getting the build prop from the generation 2 ROM but I can't figure it out. Is there anyone out there that can create a replicated generation 2 build. This wold allow us to use the app store as a kindle and not an Android tablet.

Why not just purchase a 2nd gen Kindle? The hardware diiferences between 1st and 2nd are many.

I don't feel like spending another $200 when I already did for the one I bought last year.

Kindle Fire HD 8.9": Versions?

Noob Alert!
I've just bought a (possibly blacklisted) Kindle Fire HD 8.9" 4G on eBay. The blacklisting doesn't worry me as don't want it for books or video, I just want to run apps. I would like to install a stock Android ROM; I'm sure the info to do this is on this site, somewhere ...
However, I have found conflicting information here about the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" versions. The FAQ says:
How can I tell if I have a 2nd generation Kindle Fire?
For HD models the answer should be pretty obvious ..

Well it isn't obvious to me! I was under the impression that there was just one version of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" (with two types: Wi-Fi only and WiFi + 4G like mine), at least that is what Wikipedia says (sorry, can't post link yet).
Any help with the above would be much appreciated.

A little confused

I'm happy to be a a member of the forum and I'm new here.I own a kindle fire hdx 8.9,but I don't know whether there is a cm11 rom for it.Because I didn't see the word ‘hdx’.And what is the meaning of 'Kindle Fire 2‘?I hope someone can answer my questions.
Kindle Fire first gen
Kindle Fire 2nd gen (HD)
Kindle fire 3rd gen (HDX)
To complicate things a bit more, the 7" version of the first gen 7" Fire was re-released in 2012 with slightly upgraded HW and a new OS, this is called the Kindle Fire 2. The 7" version of the 2nd gen HD was re-released last year as a model that lacks a front camera, this is known as Kindle Fire HD 7" (2013). The 8.9" HD model remains the same. These variants are shown on the respective Wikipedia pages.
As far as I understand it, both 3rd gen HDX models and the 2013 version of the HD 7" suffer from the lack of an exploit that will allow the bootloader to be subverted, meaning that they're locked-down and you can't install a custom ROM. There is an exploit that will allow root on the KFHD7(2013), and there are methods to get root on HDX models that haven't been updated to the latest firmware, see the relevant forum. Once rooted, you can get the Play Store running and some Google services and apps. But if your HDX has already succumbed to the OTA update that started to go out a few weeks ago you're out of luck at present.
The only model that Amazon currently sells which can be turned into a proper Android tablet is the older Fire HD 8.9".
[Actually, it seems that you can still find the upgraded first-gen Fire for sale on Amazon if you follow the link on the Wikipedia entry, but Amazon doesn't advertise it.]

I didn't notice the 'Kindle' until the second generation,so the question looks a little stupid. But you were so patient.Thank you very much. It's really a very detailed answer. But I still wonder if there is any possibility of getting the device unlocked and installing a custom ROM?

only if a dev comes along and get lucky and finds some code he can exploit but it is unknown when or if it will even be cracked so don't get your hopes too high.

Help please... New to Kindle, i want to install Android OS...

I just picked up a Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd gen I believe. It shows 12.2GB in storage model number x43z60, I want to put Android OS on it. Ive never done this before, and i see ALOT of info on here about it. Basically, im sure there is already a thread that will tell me everything i need with download resources.... just asking, can someone direct me to a link, with everything i will need to do this without a Boot cable, and include a stable version of the Android OS, something in the 4.x series.
I dont care if its the stock rom, or a custom rom, prefer a debloated custom rom made to run great, without any bugs or so.... Im confused by everything going on, its alot to take in when your not up to date on whats been going on. Thanks everyone!

you see the version of the kindle by: Wipe down >More>Device> About >Version : ???
I have a Pull down notification bar> More>Device>About:
System Version : Current Version 7.5.1_user_51700200
Serial Number: D025 A0A0 2356 05LS
Wifi MAC address:
Bluetooth MAC address:
It has "MODEL No. X43Z60" written on the back in the bottom center under the Amazon logo.
I did research and believe its the Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Generation.
Is that correct?
I dont know Kindle's at ALL. This is my first tablet i only bought it because it was a good deal.

Its not definitely a second gen, they names of the kindles can be very confusing which can be dangerous if your flashing stuff and dont know exactly what tablet you have!
The first and second gen kindle fires look exactly the same on the outside and nether are HD models, then there's the kindle fire HD, there's first and second gen of that and so on for each of the different models.
So you see, the first and second gen does not identity the different kindle models but the different incarnations of each model!
I have attached a chart on how to identity each model and generation, its all about the type of lock screen and the unlock tab you have (look closely at them some differences are subtle) and then what other features are on your tablet, ignore the actual images of kindles in the chart and follow the information, the images are wrong, for example it shows a kindle fire 1st gen as looking slightly different to the 2nd when in fact they are cosmetically identical but the 2nd gen kindle fire looks different to the kindle fire "HD" 1st gen!
Its super confusing at first but you will figure it out, just don't flash anything untill you are 100% sure as flash the wrong file and your kindle is a paperweight!
Another way to I'd your kindle is by connecting it via USB to your PC and running fastboot and seeing what its listed as under devices, the kindle fire 1st gen for example Is called an "otter" and the kindle fire 2nd gen is a "otter2"
Hope this helps a little.
Steve.
Thank you for the help. I also was able to find this:
Check the Serial Number
You can find this sixteen digit code in the box your Kindle came in or when you click on Settings and go to Device Info. Find your specific generation or type based on the first four characters.
Kindle 2: B002, B003
Kindle DX: B004, B005, B009
Kindle 4: B00E, B023, 9023
Kindle 5: B012
Kindle Keyboard: B006, B008, B00A
Kindle Paperwhite (2012): B024, B01B, B01C, B01D, B01F
Kindle Paperwhite (2013): B0D4 or 90D4

Note the Appearance and Size of Your Kindle
Inspect the keyboard and interface. Another helpful indicator would be the size of your Kindle. Here are a few key traits.
Kindle 2 & Kindle DX - While both look very similar and have a keyboard, the Kindle DX has a larger screen, 9.7” diagonally compared to the Kindle 2’s 6” display. The Kindle DX also supports simple PDF files.
Kindle 2 & Kindle Keyboard - Refer to the serial number by selecting Settings > Device Info. The Kindle 2’s first four digits will be B002 or B003. The Kindle Keyboard’s will be B006, B008, or B00A.
Kindle 4 & Kindle 5 - Both the Kindle 4 and Kindle 5 have a 5 way controller, as opposed to the keyboard of the earlier versions.
Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Touch - While both don’t have the same 5 way controller that other Kindle models have, the Paperwhite’s defining feature is its built-in light that can be adjusted manually.
Kindle Fire & Kindle Fire HD - The Kindle Fire HD has a micro HDMI connection and its headphone and charging ports are located on the bottom of the device. The original Kindle Fire HD from 2012 also has a front-facing camera. The updated 2013 version of the Kindle Fire HD does not have a front-facing camera.
Kindle Fire (2011) & Kindle Fire (2012) - While they look the same on the outside, one main thing to look out for is the operating system that the Kindle runs on. The Kindle Fire 2011 runs on an Android 2.3-based operating system, while the 2012 version runs on a 4.0-based operating system.
Kindle Fire HD (2012) & Kindle Fire HDX (2013) - Released in 2013, the Kindle Fire HDX looks very similar to HD but it's smaller, 5" wide compared to the older HD's 5.4" width. The HDX 8.9, also released in 2013, differentiates itself from the HD 8.9 by having a rear-facing camera.
Mine is "D025" which that table tells me it is a "Kindle Fire HD 7(2012)".
So, what would that make it? 1st generation? Or would generations not apply to this or something?
I'm going to try to find the correct forum. I would still like to proceed with my Android OS conversion. - in your opinion, what's better? A rooted factory kindle, or the Kindle with a full Android OS?

Its probably a 1st gen but I would still use the chart I attached to compare other features like front and rear cameras ect, YOU CANNOT BE TOO CAREFULL!!!
Interesting how the info you posted talks about the kindle 2 having a keyboard, not sure what they mean there, the kindle fire 2 does not have a physical keyboard, just the onscreen one that all tablets have. Hmmmm.
I am so lost. Ill check your guide when i get home. Another one i followed by describing details with item specific pictures led me to what i thought the first time. I guess it was wrong too or i messed up somewhere along the lines. This is way too much for trouble just to even find out what exactly i own lol,

Lol, is a nightmare ain't it!
If yours is a kindle fire HD for definate at least your half way there to identifying the exact model!
If you have a camera on the device its not a kindle fire 1st or 2nd gen, the original kindle fire did not have one but it seems from the chart I posted that the kindle fire HD 1st gen has a front camera but the kfhd 2nd gen does not its sondam confusing its unreal!
I've actually got a kindle fire 2nd gen and a kindle fire "HD" 1st gen so I've taken a couple of really poor photos using my other tablet and hope it helps at least clear up what tablet its definitely not. In my pics the kindle fire "HD" 1st gen is on the left and the original kindle fire 2nd gen is on the right.
Im just about 100% sure it is a Kindle Fire HD 7" 2nd Gen.
You have one of these right? Front camera in center, Two ports on the bottom in the center, one is a micro USB and the other is a micro HDMI i think... 1/4 of the way on the back from the bottom there is a darker black strip with speaker slots on the ends and Kindle written on the right side in that darker strip.....
ill try to post a pic...
Can you help lead me to a way to get Android OS on it? I got a Fastboot cable for it..
I think i found out what it is. I think its a Kindle Fire HD 7" 2012 (2nd gen). Here are some pics...... IF that is it, can you help direct me to a tutorial on installing ANDROID OS on it?
