Hmm... I can't get it to work. My Universal says:
Cannot connect. Likely reasons are:
1. Specified computer name or does not exist
2. A network error occurred while estabilishing the connection.
What I've done:
- Enabled the Remote Desktop on my computer.
- Forwarded the 3389 port to remote desktop in Windows's built in firewall. (I don't use any other one)
- Checked what is my IP
- Started the Remote Desktop Mobile on my Universal
- Entered the IP to the computer name
- Entered a username without any password, and domain
P.S.:
My Computer is behind a router. Maybe I need some other tweak?
P.P.S.:
What is the best Remote Desktop application if this one does not works? Maybe I should try another...
Help please.
Thanks

You need to set up your router to forward it to your PC. "Port forwarding", I think is the word, should be under Server/Application setup on your router.

WOW! You're fast! Try it, and post the changes
Well, I've found some things under my router Remote Management setup.
- Enabled HTTP
- Enabled UPNP
- Enabled PPTP
- Enabled IPSec
I'm quite new in router setup, because I've just get my first router about 1 months ago.
Maybe I'll try to pull out the router, and plug the internet directly to my PC. If it works, than the problem is in my router setup.
I've just realised it if I pull out the cable from the router, I cannot connect my PDa via wifi Saaaad
Now I must play with the router settings
Just a quick question. When switching on the wifi on your universal, which access point does it connect to ? Or you need to setup a adhoc between the pc and universal. Your universal must be on the same ip range as the desktop.
Let me know if this has been done yet.
There is some advice for setting up Terminal Services under XP SP2 at this link.
http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27117
You also need to be able to ping the XP SP2 machine successfully from your XDA. Try vxUtil to make sure that you can do this.
I do this at home through WiFI and it works well, particularly through the 640x480 screen.

Well, I won't encourage you to mess with the router if you don'tknow what you are doing. As of a router, Remote Management setup -> Enabled HTTP sounds to me like that just opened your router to the outside world, and if they are able to brute force their way into your router, your router is at their mercy.
Anyway, since you said that you used your phone and PC at the same router, you ought to able to do it with the LAN IP address, which should start with 192.168. At your PC, Start -> Run -> "Cmd" -> "ipconfig". That should display your network stuff, look for the 'IP address'. Use this address instead of the one you get from whatismyip.com
Sorry for nnot posting this time. I've been busy.
Well,
To hanmin:
I didn't played with the router, because of no-time, but I'll try what you've said. But I know ehat I'm doing, I'm just not experienced about advanced networking. But maybe time will teach me. Or you guys
To mikeycrawford:
Thanks will read it, and if there's any solution try it too.
To wh1t3w0lf:
Well, I want to try remote desktop via internet, not via WiFi. I mean I want to connect to my computer from my work, so I didn't selected ad-hoc connection. BTW thanks for the help
So thank you all your helps, I will have 2 days break, maybe then I'll try all you've written. And of course post the results.
Cheers,

Awwwwwwww maaaan just tried it and it works!!!!!! Now I have another question.
Ok I'm logged in, but the XP user on my PC automatically logging out. My friend doing remote desktop from our work, and when he logs in from the work on a Pc, the PC what is at home, don't logs out, it still the same, and he can use the computer to help his girlfriend.
So if he logs in form work, his gilrfried can see what he is doing.
I hope you guys can understand it, I'm writing a bit messy.
So can I do it form my PDA to PC too? And the anwer is yes, can I get a separate program for this? I think my friend uses a program what is called VNC.
And another question: I know the built-in remote desktop in the best program for this process. What are the most useable programs? I mean: best speed, or more beautiful look.
Cheers, and thanks for helping

Below is my experience. I hope this can help you.
WiFi LAN
phone<------------------> laptop <-------> Proxy<----->Internet
10.1.1.10 10.1.1.1 NATed
Prerequisite:
1. laptop or pc has wireless adapter that support configured as AP.
2. OS that support NAT (LAN as public network, wifi as private network).
My laptop is Windows XP SP3
3. A DHCP/DNS server. I use DualServer
Steps:
1. Configure wireless adapter as AP mode and give a static IP. (10.1.1.1, netmask is 255.255.255.0
2. Configure DualServer in laptop.
I just modified DualServer.ini with following line based on defalut installation.
[LISTEN-ON]
10.1.1.1 # only listen this interface, not affect office network
[DHCP-RANGE]
DHCP_Range=10.1.1.100-10.1.1.119
DNS_Server=10.1.1.1 # all phone's DNS query request will be forwarded to latptop
Router=10.1.1.1 # all phone's traffic will be routed to laptop
[xx:xx:xx:ea:a5:8d] # phone's wifi interface MAC Address, in order to given fixed IP.
IP_Addr=10.1.1.10
DNS_Server=10.1.1.1
Router=10.1.1.1
3. Configure NAT on XP laptop
In command window:
a). net stop remoteaccess
b). netsh routing ip nat install
c). netsh routing ip nat delete interface "Local Area Connection" full
d). netsh routing ip nat add interface "Wireless Network Connection 5" private
e). netsh routing ip nat add interface Internal private
f). net start remoteaccess
Please replace your interface name on step c) and d).
4. Start wireless AP on laptop. Make sure laptop can access internet.
Open wifi on phone, find laptop's AP and link to. Then phone will be allocated a IP (10.1.1.10).
You can configure some security protocol on phone and laptop.
5. In most case, Your office internet access is via proxy.
You should also install a proxy app called TransProxy in phone.
Then configure your proxy info to TransProxy.
6. Does not work?
Install Android SDK if not. run "abd shell"
ping 10.1.1.1, It should be OK, other You have wireless configuration error.
ping address1 is OK (address1 is IP address of your LAN interface),
Other Your NAT configuration contains error.
Now you can surf internet on phone now.
If your wireless adapter does not support AP mode.
Please refer to another thread, (forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8686601&postcount=17)
It still can share laptop's internet.
How does DNS work?
I am trying to use transproxy but I have not idea how the DNS could work. My understanding is all the traffic will go through transproxy. But my phone doesn't know anything about it, right? The iptables redirects the traffic from port 80, 443, etc. to redsocks. If my phone's applications don't know the proxy, how can they use GET http instead of DNS query?
Well, people , was trying to Share my laptops Broadband connection with my sgs running MIUI 1.7.8 but couldnt get to to work. The phone just used to get stuck at "Obtaining ip address". Using Connectify didnt help me, so i had to manually configure the connections.
Here is a complete tutorial for connecting to the adhoc network to get it working.
Setting up the connection:
1) Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
2) Go to Change Adapter Settings
3) Find the adapter for the default internet connection (it was a PPPOE in my case, it is the connection u use to connect to the internet.)
4) Right click on that -> Cancel as Default Connection
4) Right click -> Properties -> Sharing tab
5) Uncheck "Allow other network users to connect ..." if it is not
6) Right-Click the Correct Wireless Network Connection > Properties > "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" in Windows Vista / Only "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" in Windows 2000 and XP > Properties
7) Choose "Use the following IP address:" and enter the following
IP address : 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
Setting Up The Network :
1) Open Network and Sharing Center.
2) Under Change your networking settings, click Set up a new connection or network.
3) Select Set up a wireless ad hoc (computer-to-computer) network
4) Enter your Network name, and enter a Security key if wanted (Use WEP over here, WPA doesnt seem to work.)
5) Check the box for Save this network and click Turn on Internet connection sharing on next page.
Configuring the Phone :
1) Now on the android, go to Settings -> Wi-Fi Settings -> Advanced.
2) In IP settings, turn on use static IP.
3) Give The settings as follows :
IP address : 192.168.0.2
Gateway : 192.168.0.1
Netmask : 255.255.255.0
DNS 1 : 192.168.0.1
4) Now turn of Use Static IP. Dont worry, the settings will remain as they are.
5) Now Go back and connect to the adhoc network you created above, give the password and it will try to connect to it.
6)At this point, you will see Obtaining IP address, now go into advanced again and enable use static ip. Voila! you are connected to the network.
Well, if you're using Windows 7, there is no need for ad-hoc networks
Windows 7 has a built-in support for wireless hotspots, but unfortunatly Microsoft didn't implement a control panel for that.
There is a freeware called connectify, it will turn your Windows7 Computer with a wireless card into a real hot spot, no ad hoc needed:
http://www.connectify.me/
I couldnt get connectify to work either. But I found a much better (lightweight and simple) program which worked for me called "virtual router manager". Works a charm every time

Connectify didnt help, and AP mode or adhoc mode is based upon the Wireless network harware you have and not the Operating System...

Not all network cards are supported by virtual router manager.. Mine was not supported.. whereas the above method works for all wifi cards regardless of model...
well, observed thks thing... for connecting to wifi everytime we need to turn of use static ip, then turn on wifi and wait for obtaing ip address message and after it is shown, go to advanced and switch on us sttic ip... this does the trick...
Connectify just keeps giving my system a damn BSOD...

Actually wireless AP mode was implemented in Windows 7 and therefore programs like connectify won't work on Vista or Xp.
Adhoc has been supported for much longer, but it is a completely different thing than wireless AP mode.
If you are running Windows 7, you should be able to use wireless AP mode. If programs like connectify somehow fail, you can always try enabling it manually.
If everything fails, upgrade your hardware.

I am using connectify on XP machine every day without any problems. But on windows 7x64 cannot manage to get ad hoc connection neither with connectify nor with virtual router or whatever it is called- I just get stuck at "obtaining ip"..
I used mhotspot today and worked well for my htc evo with mik3.0 and the KRAKD transformer
I wanted something like this so as to use the VPN service on the laptop..
and hook the other two devices through it..
(I am in China so need to hopthewall on my droid devices)
worked like a charm..

Hello everyone!
I have been trying to find a way to connect my phone to a AdHoc network I created with my Windows Vista laptop, but the phone doesn't seem to fidn the network. I checked for this problem in several threads, but I cannot seem to find an answer for Wildfire. Most answers are for HTC Desire and/or HTC Hero. Has someone found a way to connect the phone to a AdHoc network, without compromising the conectivity to routers or other open networks?
Found the solution:
1. I flashed the nFinity Kernel mc4
2. I flashed this wpa_supplicant patch
3. I created an AdHoc network on my Vista laptop
[ATTENTION: Do NOT use WPA.. Only WEP encryption]
And then my phone was able to share the laptop's internet connection.
Google for "mhotspot.exe".
Share your pc internet to any mobile via WiFi. Rooting is not necessary.

google for "connectify"
Connectify is an easy to use software router for laptops and smart phones. With Connectify, users can wirelessly share any Internet connection: a cable modem, a cellular card, or even another Wi-Fi network. Other Wi-Fi enabled devices can see and join your Connectify hotspot just like any other Wi-Fi access point and are kept safe and secure by password-protected WPA2 Encryption.
Working fine with me
Does this "mhotspot" enables ad hoc or is it silimar to connectify? Cos i use wireless broadband (hspa) modem and both connectify and virtual wifi router does not work with it. Any way to use ad-hoc it self?

Unfortunatelly, I tried Connectify, but it is not an option for my Windows Vista laptop! It is only compatible with Windows 7. Although there is no obvious reason for my staying on Windows Vista, upgrading is not an option right now. Thusly, I'm in search of some solytion other than Conectify.

Connectify is a crappy software, as it completely stops your internet connection. I had to uninstall it to make it work again ( i use fastcable DIAL-up connection )
But you can do it with the CMD.
Open an elevated command prompt (Type “CMD.EXE” in the start menu search bar, then right click the cmd.exe link and select “Run as Administrator”).
In the command window, type: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyNet key=MyPassword
Replace “MyNet” with the name you want to use for the wireless network and replace “MyPassword” with your chosen password for accessing it)
Press Enter.
Now type: netsh wlan start hostednetwork
Press Enter.
Open Control Panel and go to Network and Sharing Center.
Click Change Adapter Settings.
Right click your Internet connection and select Properties.
Click the Sharing tab.
Check the box that says “Allow other network users to connect.”
Choose your virtual wi-fi adapter and click OK.
If you want to delete the new created connection type in cmd: netsh wlan stop hostednetwork

The only commands available on my netsh wlan are these:
set file
set machine
set mode
set autoconfig
set blockednetworks
set createalluserprofile
set profileorder
set profileparameter
set tracing
So I suppose it has something to do along with the fact that connectify is only available for Windows 7. Apparently creating a virtual host is not an option for Windows Vista.
So is there a way, by changing something on the phone, to make it identify my adhoc network?
I also tried with add-hoc connection and it didn't work. But what i forgot to do was to share the internet with the new created connection aka share the connection that already has internet to the one created with the ad-hoc method.
Network and Sharing Center> Adapter Settings> Chose your connection that has internet>Properties>Sharing> Allow other network user...>From the List choose the connection created via ad-hoc ( should be Wireless COnnection 2 )
I can't say more as I never used Vista much.

In some cases ISPs have mac address filtering which could lead to connecting, but not being able to dl/up. Worse part is if you're not with a router but for example a dongle, they might not be able to detect the address or atleast those are the lies my ISP has been telling me.
