1.4 free ram out of 4gbs? What?
I disabled and uninstalled all bloatwares no recent apps opened
Only cpu z is this for real? ?
Whats wrong with that?
1.4gb is plenty of free ram, why do you need more?
I know but why? 2.3gbs of used ram for what? Display?os?and what?
2639 MB
I saw this and wondered about it so I got cpu-z from the play store to check it out myself. Mine says 2639 MB free. Check your auto start and see what is set up to run automatically.

Android and hardware, trust me when i say this, the more you use the better is.
2150(54%) free for me. ROM Prism BareBone+Project T kernel.

Memory usage in android isn't as you know on a standard PC. Android OS uses to free RAM when is needed. If not need it use to maintain apps previously opened in RAM to successively opens them faster. I know this is a really easy explanation. To know more in deep the Android memory management you have to study it from official SDK manuals. (I got 1.7 gb of free RAM)

the flipside would be too much unused ram.
*think the recent samsung fiasco where it was force closing every app the moment you exited it*
The more ram available, the more ram an operating system could and should use. A certain amount should be free for new threads and tasks, as well as timer-initiated background tasks, but the more ram you have the more the system can put things into it and out of a swap file or cache. So, for our devices, having that much ram means that most, if not all, of the common open operating system components are put into ram and stay there. Then it loads applications as you open them, and will only clear them out if a) you run out of ram or b) you manually close it/stop app. It used to be that, back in the old days of operating systems, there wasn't as much automated memory management to keep things smoothly running. Things pre-Windows XP had a nasty habit of gobbling up ram for things that aren't even being used and then not release it. For Android, though, and especially at this point in its existence, our devices have plenty, which results in the smooth and hiccup-free experience we get using the Zenfone 2!
There, all my years of IT experience contributed to something today.
Thanks for the Infos! now i know

In the settings menu it says that this device has 1gb of ram. But when I open the running services under applications, there's only a total of 512mb ram. Were the other 512mb of ram? I mean I could understand if there wasLike 800mb as there has to be something reserved for the gpu and system tasks, but 512mb is too, much.
It has 1gb of ram. The "missing" ram could be used for the OS, tasks, running programs etc.. The box says 1gb of ram as well.
yes but I'm sure the os does not use 512mb of ram
Settings > About Tablet > Device Information shows RAM size: 1GB. Given that it is an nVidia chipset, I wouldn't put it past them to utilize half of that for the OS and graphics processing, actually. No real indicators as to what the 512MB of RAM is really being used for, though.
same issue on the A500 I think its dedicated to video
512m is too much for video ram and os ram. The os still uses about 100mb of ram on boot? So some of the 512mb of ram is locked out for some reason?
Did anyone ever figure out why it reports only 512 in the settings menu?
I just bought this tab a few days ago and that was one of the first things i noticed, i wondered if it was defective...

The reported amount of memory is fixed in ICS.
Hey littleemp,
Thanks for the screenshot. That's not actually where we are looking.
The Device Information page in HC also reports 1GB.
Its in the Settings --> Applications --> Running Services
If you add up the used space and free space, it doesn't come anywhere close to 1GB
Elixir 2 says 725,5 MB
Also shows very different thing about free memory (80รท100MB less) from that reported in settings/applications.

I've got about 750 mb
I took a look at my settings for running apps when I saw this post. My tab seems to have about 750mb of ram. I am running the new ics leak though maybe that's why. I can definitely see the OS taking up about 250mb of ram.
I've tried to move most of my apps to the ROM (system/apps) partition so that I can have more room for the media on the storage partition but some apps like music and poweramp don't seem to work.
Are there any guidelines to know which apps would work in this way?
I used a file manager to do this. Ghost Commander using root mode.

I cant answer your question but i dont think you get any benefit to moving the apps from one place to another....
From this link....
With the unified storage model we introduced in Honeycomb, we share your full 32GB (or 16GB or whatever) between app data and media data. That is, no more staring sadly at your 5GB free on Nexus S when your internal app data partition has filled up -- it's all one big happy volume.
Im using AOKP ROM but not sure that matters.
I gained free space on internal and lost space on system as reported by TiBu . The low storage warning went away also.

Some apps work some dont. I'm just moving APKs. Anything else to help apps that aren't working on the ROM partition?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I'm not really grasping the point here.. I mean, most apps are only ~3mb or so. Is moving a few of them over to the /system partition really going to solve your storage issues? That's like one song per app transferred.
To each his own, I suppose.
But the storage is effectively all one partition... and the apps are so small...
Some apps like games are 10mb and even larger.
Yes there is not a lot to gain but I want to use the ~500mb free space on the ROM partition.
Those on Verizon might not care but 16GB is not much for the GSM version.

Very true, I think it is ridiculous to put a permanent warning out if you still got 500Mb of free space. My Nexus One don't even has that much storage combined and only starts bugging me when at 20MB and less. I could live with the warning sign, but stopping synchronization with my services is a huge fail by the OS.
I have an issye with my HOX. My phone have started getting hung a lot of time.. i mean the phone is working so slow. Then one of my friend adviced me to instal a ram booster. Effectivly it worked well. I created a whitelist of apps not to be killed. Everything is just good. But i kinda have a trouble now.
My problem is that soon after i boost my ram,the set of apps again start on. I mean all the apps which i killed, thwy start in process in just next second after i killed them. Now can anyone help me by guiding me the most suitable solution for my issues.

Now i want to set thses apps which is ticked in the picture not to start in process on its own.
Can anyone guide me for the above problem. Like nfcservice, calender storage, whatsapp, bluetooth and all other unnecessary apps.these apps are just using my ram memory and kinda making my phone not work with itz real efficency. So please provide me a solution.

Yeah, if you read about android memory management you don't really need to worry about free RAM... Android will manage everything for you. Just stop manually killing apps.

Free RAM is wasted RAM is more an opinion, not a fact.
You can use something like "Autostarts" and/or "Startup Manager" to control the triggers for all Apps, that will teach them some behaviour...
Can't stand all that stuff running in the background even though I only use some of them only once a week either.
Its a fact. Linux memory management will only start the killed process again and again, wasting cpu and battery, furthermore, cached processes in ram do not use battery.
Free ram is wasted ram, if you only want 400-500 mb of ram used, why not buy a phone with 512mb of ram?

If you want to have ROM without some native programs - you can try custom ROM. There are plenty excellent ROMs.
If you want to freeze some apps it will be better to do it manually thru
Ssttings- Apps- last(fourth row) in which you will find all working apps, even system apps.
But bear in mind that the Android OS needs some of them in some specific moments, so if you disable them your system may be crashed or slow-same as your problem at the moment.
So my advice is- find smaller as possible ROM (Blade or else) and minimise your apps you are using.
Regards.

Hi guys,
I face this strange situation.
On my Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-i9195 android 4.2 version), when I go to Settings->More tab ->Storage, I can see what I have attached in the first screenshot. My free space is reported as 489mb....It is true that if I add the totals of each category spacing it sums app to this ammount.
However if I tap on Applications category in storage it transfers me to Application Manager. There initially, as soon as it opens it reports around 500 mb device memory free, but after some "per-app-scanning" which show the exacts space each app occupies, after about 10 seconds it shows 1.2 gb free device memory...
What is the deal here? If I have to guess I would say that there is some false storage reporting from the apps section about how much space they occupy... As soon as you enter the apps manager it recalculates and displays the correct amount. However the total in settings isn't updated...
Has anyone else got this issue, and how can it be solved?
Thanks.

That is weird. Take a look at mine. Both say 4.6GB free. What does the storage tab under touchwiz 'Task Manager' say?
It also says 7.51/8.00 usage so about 490 as in storage settings...
However it is really strange that in the app manager it starts at 490 and as counting the space of each app it finally reaches 1.2 gb of free space....
I don't want to miss my extra 800mb of space!!!! hahahaha

In the 1st pic u posted it says miscellaneous files occupy 1.22GB which could be what app management section confuses with:silly:. I may be wrong with my reasoning but it is certainly a weird issue.
I even roughly added all the apps size from the application manager and they sum up to approximately 2.5gb.....
So there must me something wrong with app storage calculation in storage settings..
Anyone?
For more info on swap memory, check this article.
I know swap memory shouldn't be necessary on Android, as we already have ZRAM, however, that still takes up RAM space and we only have 4GB at our disposal.
Plus, 512MB of ZRAM is not that much, even if it's compressed.
I use a lot of apps. Most of them don't run in the background, so that's fine. However, the one time they do run is just after a reboot. Then they all fire almost at the same time because they have on-boot listeners and this clogs up my ZRAM and RAM completely causing everything to crash up to System UI.
When System UI resets after a while, all the apps get the on-boot command again and it repeats... The only solution I have right now is using System Monitor 2 to stop the processes continuously for a minute or so, until all the apps have gotten their on-boot command and the phone runs normally.
I've tried the background check and battery savings settings for those apps, but they still run on boot :/ I also looked at some apps that could block apps from starting on boot, but they all seemed a few years old, back from when phones still had 1GB of RAM.
So, as SWAP helped my laptop from crashing every time my RAM filled up, I thought it would help my phone as well!
The stock kernel however doesn't seem to support swap (which I checked with "su cat /proc/cpuinfo" as described in the article).
Next I tried ElementalX which also doesn't seem to support it.
Any other kernels I should try?
I'm not sure about Kernels with swap support but I use an app called SD Maid to turn off apps run at boot command. That app is constantly updated and does the job well.
How do you do that exactly? In appControl I can see which apps run at boot and I can uninstall or freeze the app, but not disable it booting as far as I can see
It's under app controls receiver manager. You can turn off start at boot and any other services it has.

Yess got it! Thanks! Let's test if that can solve my problem. I'm still curious towards a swap enabled kernel though, also for other reasons
Hmm for some reason all apps still wake after the boot is finished, even though I blocked them all with SDMaid. Really odd...
That is odd. SD Maid has worked really well for me. I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm using the Pro version. I've had it so long I can't remember what the difference between the free and pro versions are
I'm also using pro, so that's the same. But yeah, when booting I notice apps like AliExpress still starting when I disabled its boot receiver with sdmaid and even blocked it from running in the background in two places of the Android settings (battery saving and background check)
