Although we discussed this on another forum, i would like to add some informations:
It seems that the new fire tv 2 is only working with the controller, when you dont put a LAN cable in the box. If you use a LAN cable, the controller doesnt work.
Maybe its just a software failure... but it can be something else too.
I already called the amazon support... lets see what they answer.

looks like Boart fell for it too, I thought you were talking about the controller, but upon actually reading the thread instead of skimming it, I determined you were actually talking about the wifi adapter that plugs into the USB port (at least that is what my second look at the thread told me) although on second thought that seems a bit silly since it has internal wifi... now I am confused...
If this is a controller post, then the wired 360 one works great, only no menu button is mapped apparently... I have not tried with a LAN cable connected though.
The wireless worked perfect with menus I had to make sure Ethernet wasnt plugged in when booting I think I took HDMI out too, wired PDP 360 controller however did work but right analog kept spinning in Minecraft and the triggers didn't work

I got a response today:

Ihr Problem ist kein Einzelfall und es wird aktuell ein Update erstellt.
Die Techniker rechnen mit einer Herrausgabe im Quartal 1 2016.

Your problem is not a single case and a update is being created.
The technicians guess that it will be deployed in q1 2016
I was having the same problem, and unplugging the LAN cable fixed it also... Hope they do patch this.

First of all it works, the most important thing, it works well in fact and my 1080p videos look fantastic, those I have downloaded and those I have recorded myself with this phone, they really do look great and a HD TV. So for the measly price of 15-20 sheets its worth it regardless of the issues below.
The only problem:
For those that didn't know, i.e, didn't do their homework, you cannot just plug this in and it will work, it needs power. Now I knew about this and didn't really see it is an issue as I hadn't really imagined how this would look, work and feel. Well I can say that for me (only my opinion) its a bit of a mess, its far from elegant. Basically you have to plug in a usb cable into the adapter first, this powers it, then plug the adapter into the Phone and then the hdmi into the adapter and TV. This is all easily done but like I say it is far from a more elegant one cable solution that doesn't need power and doesn't need an adapter. For me this was my first real disappointment with this phone, a floating turd in an otherwise lake of glittering gold.
Now it could be argued that I knew about this and that I shouldn't be disappointed but I am, the whole thing in your hand just feels ungainly, something you are not going to know until you put it all together. I really don't like the idea that you have to have a second cable to power it either, again I know this so I don't need this pointing out but people should be aware of this drawback, however minor.
Summary (for those who can be arsed to read)
1. It works really well, HD stuff looks fantastic.
2. Its not an elegant solution as you need a usb cable to power the adapter itself.
What about the official Samsung one? That one is probably much better.

marginally better in that the USB input is place in line with the cable and so when inserted it doesnt jut out at a right angle.
This Phone is never going to need MHL, its too early for the tech I think, its a fail for me, should have taken the same route as the LG2x, although even with this issue the sg2 is still the best phone on the market.
Hi. I have expansys version for £13. Also works great. But with yours whilst in use, does the phone keep charge or charge up whilst in use. With mine I find so far that even though the phone is charging whilst connected to the tv, it looses charge

Dont worry - sorted it. Stoppped overclocking to 1.5ghz and using performance govenor (DOH!) and I can now stream 1080p from youutube over wifi (only works through full fat desktop internet browser mode btw, not via the youtbe app or youtube in mobile broweser page mode) with mobile data off and still charges the phone at the same time!
Wow 1080 video over internet wifi straight to tv. This phone rocks!
my only gripe with this adapter is that it requires power, if this port was just put in place to allow charging when playing this would have been fine, its just the fact you cannot use he adapter at all without an extra the power source.
I wonder what it actually is needing the power for.
The problem here is that there is no MHL compliant TV yet afaik.
Cause the MHL port in a TV would provide power to the phone without needing another cable.
You'd want it plugged in anyway. I can see the battery lasting an hour playing 1080P video outputting internally and externally at the same time.
Do you still have to have an external power source on the official samsung MHL adapter?
If so, I really doubt I'm buying one
In other words, I need to have a PC or power contact for it to work?

Hey,
is the output really 1080p (if you have a movie which is 1080p), or is it Android´s/ the phone´s native resolution?
just wondering
bye
Its the phones resolution unless you're in the video player, in which case it outputs it in HD if the source file is HD (does 1080i for compressed video, I've heard it will do 1080p with un-compressed video, but not tried yet to confirm).

Probably for the MHL-to-HDMI bridge chip and any support electronics. Note that once MHL-capable TVs enter the market, it may be possible to use a straight-through passive cable, especially if the MHL-capable TV provides charging input to the phone as promised.
can someone tell me what is the cost for a good cable in us dollars?
Wouldnt it make sense for there to be an option to turn the phone screen off when outputting to the TV?
i orderd mine from clove, still waiting for my order..
I ordered this cable just now at mobilefun, but I made an error in my phone number. Wanted to press the escape button so the page wouldn't continue but it was too late. Lol .. anyway I'm sure it'll be fine. Although, I didn't receive a confirmation email yet
"Expected back in stock: 4-8 days" Grrrr
Official Samsung cable is on Amazon UK at the time I'm posting this for £17.99

Not sure I really need one but a heads-up for those who want it.
Edit: "Usually dispatched within 1 to 4 months"! - oh well maybe I'll order it and see if I need it when it gets here...
i am using the official samsung hdtv adapter/hdmi adapter. just got it today.
the quality of the output video is fantastic...
only gripe is similar to what was mentioned. have to get it powered before it can be used..
sighs..
I've looked around on Amazon but I don't know what to get so are there any suggestions for one that works
Thanks

I just bought one for ten bux at frys. gonna try it later today hopefully.
I bought 5 of them online for about 4 bucks a piece. Took several weeks to get them. I got 5 because I figured I'd loose them and originally got them for my nexus.
i made mine but anything designed for the galaxy nexus seems to work.
I have all usb host working ie, flash drive, mouse/keyboard, (stick mount & powered hub) (when you mount flashdrive etc use a file explorer to locate it on your sdcard "usbstorage").
any tips on getting bluetooth activated as my dongle shows up in usb controller app but the BT toggle switch doesn't stay switched:-(

no probs, i'm off to bed so i'll do it in the morning.
it,s 1.18am here.
I'm also trying to incorporate a male & female stereo jack so i can use the headphone port at the same time (this will make it alot more rugged as well as it will have the two points of contact and not just the usb).
when I strip it back down tomorrow I will post a step by step guide with pic's.
the hardest part is stripping the back off the micro connector to expose pin 5. also I used a multi meter with sewing needles taped to the test leads to test it all out after the build. (I made a straight one first which is easier but puts strain on the usb port)imo.
once the headphone jack extension is finished I will put in a lever for the power button
hope this helps and happy stripping (watch those little fingers it's fiddly) lol
haha I know exactly what you mean, I sliced my finger this morning trying to peel back the micro USB plastic but anyways thanks, I really appreciate it that thing is awesome

It might just be my pc monitor. I can't even get it to work with my computer via hdmi (dvi works though, as well as with my 360 and ps3). The adapter looks legit to me. I'll be trying it on a different tv and/monitor in a bit

I bought the new MHL adapter as soon as it was available from Samsung. Output from applications like Netflix is reduced quality, this is intentional by the Netflix app. If you play a HD movie, you will see the quality is very good.
My only problem was lag. It looked good, but it was the equivalent of playing a video game with a framerate of around 20 FPS, it made gaming impossible and movies frustrating. I was told it may be my MHL adapter, but I haven't gotten a new one yet.
Saying it's the adapter is the easy answer. I have one that works perfectly on almost any LCD TV I have tried, but on LCD monitors, I have issues usually. I have used it with an HDMI to DVI cable, and got the exact result you described. I think it has something to do with the monitor not recognizing the native output. I haven't used it on an HDMI monitor.
I can confirm it works quite well on almost all TV's.
Ok I think I know what the problem is now. Seems like the s3 only outputs tp 1080i, that explains the flickering and fuzziness on my Led monitor. Is there no mod or hack to at least make it output at 720p instead (since 1080p would probably be to demanding)? Why would samsung stick to just 1080i? Was it the same with previous phones like the s2?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
Now that I'm on the puter it's gonna be easier to explain, I bought a T-Mobile MHL kit when
I got the HTC One S and rooted the device but for some reason it wouldn't work with it so
about a month after I had the One S I bought the GS3 and rooted it (still have both) and
tried it with this one and still nothing.
I was told by a few that it might not work on a rooted device but after doing the research it
seems that I'm the only one having this problem but I figured trying it on a different device
should show something, I'm at the point now that I'm sure it's the MHL kit and not a root
problem.
AFAIK only 1 cable/adapter exists that works with the s3 and its an official samsung product. Previous mhl adapters won't work due to a change in pin layout to the connector so if you bought one that isn't marked for the s3, the most likely isn't compatible and won't work. Even official s2 mhl adapters won't work

I am experiencing weird bug. Connecting to DVI monitor through adapter direct forces 640x480. Through AV receiver black screen at all, only audio works. I guess my monitor or adapter is the reason, however this setup works well with raspberry pi (1280x1024).
Does anybody using HDMI to DVI adapters to connect Fire Tv? Is there any way to force resolution? Changing through gui is disabled for me.
Sent from my LG-D802 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm having a similar problem. My TV is old and doesn't have an HDMI port, so I'm using an HDMI to DVI adapter as I did with my Pi. My screen goes black right after "Checking for Updates"
This is apparently an HDCP issue, which I don't know much about. My TV's DVI port is supposed to be HDCP compatible. There are "active" adapters that can fool the Fire TV and make it work, apparently, but I'm trying to get it working without having to spend another $30 on another stupid adapter.
It's a very disappointing bug, I guess. When I connecting it through receiver my monitor shows 1280x720 but screen is always black. However rarely I can catch flickering with signal. It means monitor support this (720p) resolution. On direct connection it works, but at 640x480 and not allow to change resolution. I thinking about buying optical audio cable to connect it to receiver directly but it's about 30$ and resolutions is so odd. I hope this will be fixed with new OTA. So if anyone is thinking about to buy Fire TV to use with DVI monitor, right now it looks like a bad idea. I'd rather bought something other if know that.

I got my TOSLINK cable for about $5 (with Prime shipping) from Amazon, and a TOSLINK to stereo RCA converter from eBay for $13.
When you get the black screen, if you unplug the HDMI and plug it back in with the right timing (fairly quickly but not too quickly) you can kind of make it work. It looks like crap but the menus are navigable. The first time, I had colorful static with the clear picture flashing through every 5 seconds or so. I reseated the HDMI cable again a few more times and it came up clear (except for the terrible resolution).
Thank, I will check for cheaper dealer. The price I've talking about is for belkin cable. As for you hack thanks for information may be it will be helpful for someone. Behaviour you describing stopped for me after first OTA. Right now I always get crap resolution on direct connection without flickering. But before update it flickers continuously too. I hope next OTA will fix it. May be drop a line to amazon is make sense?
Sent from my LG-G2 using XDA Free mobile app
Finally I've bought a cheap TOSLINK cable, and was really disappointed to find it almost quiet. For an hour trying to switch different modes on Fire TV and AV receiver. My last hope was factory reset and it helps, so, I'm with sound right now it's much better, but still on a crap resolution. I hope Amazon will fit it, I believe hardware is ok.
Sound works for a day and again disappeared. I think for some reason device forced routing it to HDMI. I've just leave it along for a day and after woke up uncovered no sound. However receiver show, that signal is ok, if not it is blinking. But signal is silence. I started to think about selling this piece of crap.
I found some info about this bug. It's a well known android problem.
Some sources mention it was fixed since 3.8 kernel issued.
Current firmware incorporates 3.4. I hope next update will fix this.

Did anyone manage to work out a solution?
I'm having a similar issue with an hdmi to dvi adapter - works fine if hooking up to a monitor via hdmi, but if using the adapter it only outputs 480p - and says the monitor doesn't support higher resolutions. I'd love to be able to use the AFTV with an older, larger DVI-only monitor that I have.
I saw one of these cool looking "MHL hub" devices for sale on eBay for between 10 and 15 dollars and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with them on the L900 Note2. I ask because I know the domestic versions of these devices often have many features locked out or missing (FM radio, tv-out, etc.).
Also, for those people who have confirmed they work, does using it just as a card reader require that external power be connected? Does using the HDMi output feature require power be connected? Can HDMi output, the card reader, and the usb slot be used simultaneously or can they only be used one at a time? Lastly, will such a unit fit a Note2 with an otterbox defender?
Thanks.

I would guess no one has used it. What I can answer for you is that hdmi always requires power. I would think that everything would work at once (my hdmi dock hub does) like a normal usb hub. Now would it work with your case. That would depend on how much room you have when you connect usb.

I have the white samsung media hub with hdmi out. I use a wireless mouse/keyboard combo when streaming netflix (over wifi) and dont notice any lag (normally it kills all radio signal).

Did you buy the official Samsung smart dock or a third party dock? I have a third party dock and it's meehh. I use an MHL adapter and use my 4G to stream from certain video apps i have and it's awesome. My wifi is worse than my data lol

It is an official one but it sits right between my monitor and wifi router also right above my cpu. Every blue moon it has signal but normally it does not. Since I have multiple clones I just turn on another in case I get a call or text.

Do you get to use USB mice/keyboards at the same time as the HDMi out feature?

Everything running at once hdmi, mouse, keyboard, and usb drive all at once. Kinda need at least a mouse (on official media hub anyways) cause the phones screen turns off. The digitizer still functions but kinda difficult with no display.
