LG G4 marshmallow poor battery life and performance ?!?! - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am on MM almost three days and i noticed huge battery drains. Tried hard reset and calibrating the battery, but no luck. Im stuck on 2.5h SOT and it makes me angry. On lollipop i was getting almost 4.5-5h SOT on 3g and data always on. I noticed some lags and downgrade in performance. Shame on you LG, please fix this.. G4 is best phone and we need best software for it.

yep, same battery results for me. i went back to LL

went back to LP too till they get MM rooted

I'm not having this problem with my mm
did you do a full wipe cache ?

I meant a full factory reset after upgrading from LP ?

I have same SoT time like LP.
Can't understand what's wrong with others.
2.5hr that's insane....

Me too ... My battery sucks...i niticed that the drain is more visible in mobile data. I don't know if gsam battery make a correct read in mm but it siad that"system logd" eats battery. In WiFi is side by side with android system but on mobile data is double. A bad joke this update. I wait root appears for lg mm and get rid of this . also chrome and Google now use more battery like before. Where is doze...after night usually I lose 5-6% now 12-13%. It's always like this ... I make the same mistake upgrading to lollipop from KitKat with HTC m8 and go worst. Now the same. Goodbye updates from me. I stay with the original software. I love android but here always sucks ... In the meantime for example my battery lost 3% when I wrote that ?

Yep, I factory reset and reinstalled everything, still poor battery

3 h SOT here too but with greenify (donation version) I reach 4 h.
By the way it's ridiculous..

By the way after I make the factory reset I run gsam monitor with no app inside... The same system logd system dbox or something are in line with the screen. So it's not a misbehaving app it's only a bad implementation of mm made by lg. They want to be the first but they become the worst.

are you using V20b or V20a ??

let me tell you something dude
If you want to get a less battery eater screen you have two solutions :
- Go back to fHD screens like Sony Xperia phones
- Go to amoled panel like note 5 with all of it famous weaknesses (SOT = 5.5 - 6 max )
For me a powerbank is the best solution to enjoy this beautiful screen of G4

Hy dude... I was talking about some background process that apear after mm update. even with this doze mode my phone running out of juice faster in stand by. I don't get your opinion ... You think that with lollipop I have a different screen? Before the update I get easily 4 h sot with some coc playing.

I guess we must wait for MM to get some software updates and optimization .. For now the best is to roll back to LP like i did and wait

you guys are doing something very wrong, my H815 battery life is insane, with heavy use, I cannot run down the battery in a 16 hour day! - I go to bed and the phone is still on over 40% - running stock newest marshmallow 20B with a few tweaks

How you do this ? My battery lasts only 2h screen on time

And how do you get v20B ? I am on v20A and it shows me that i dont have update

[Q] Some General G3 Questions

Hey guys ! Today I traded my S5 for a G3 and I have some questions :
1. Which is the latest and which is the best firmware ? I am currently on V10H. I see that there are V10i and V10j firmwares, but I don't get a OTA. Should I manually flash them and are they newer and better ?
2.Is it normal for the phone to heat up so much. My G3 heats up just from listening to music and using facebook messenger on 3G. The first boot after updateing my phone it was hot like an oven. Barely touchable on the top side of the screen. (also the brightness could't go beyond 90%)
3. If I root my G3, do I loose my warranty ?
4. Can I do something after rooting to improve the battery life and lower down the heat ?
5. My G3 uses around 10-12% overnight (6-7 hours) Isn't that too much ? My S5 used around 2-3% overnight...
6. Also on Antutu v5 at exactly 27% I get High temperature warning and my phone reboots. Anyone else having this problem ?
Please guys !

1) I think I and J are kind of the same but others will know better, they are the latest firmware.
2) No but what you call heat and what others call heat might be different but it shouldn't get anything more than warm at most.
3) Yes but you can revert back easily to keep warranty. I used Stump Root.
4) Yes lots of things but I haven't tried any as I have very good battery. There are things you can do without rooting as well.
5) Yes that is way too much. Mine uses no more than 2% over 8 hours but I have a few of the Google things turned off.
6) Never done it but from what I've read others have had the same problem.
If you have an SD card in the phone remove it and see if the heat will stop.
It is a Saturday so give it some time for others to answer.

1) My D855 is on 10H at the moment with no OTAs available at the moment. Most of the OTAs so far have just been small bug fixes and such (the change log for J is exactly the same as H). Its not worth trying to manually flash them yourself. Sometimes the update is available by the LG PC Suite before the OTA, so maybe give that a go.
2) The G3 warming up isnt uncommon. I can usually feel mine warming up around the power button in usage similar to yours. I wouldn't worry too much about the phone being hot after just booting from an update, the phone has probably been running the CPU flat out during the update and boot process to finish everything. The limited brightness is an automatic thing put in place by LG to prevent overheating. (If it was limited to 90%, then I would have thought it is not getting that hot otherwise the brightness would be limited even more)
3) Probably. I haven't rooted mine, but I believe there is a root counter/status thing in the hidden service menu that LG may look if ever your phone is sent back by which they may deny repairs or charge you for them out of warranty. (But if it is a genuine hardware defect, they may be lenient. I sent my HTC One back for repairs for the purple tint issue on the camera with the bootloader still unlocked, but they didn't say anything)
4) Not sure about that (as I haven't rooted).
5) That usage seems about the same drain I have when leaving the phone while it is on cellular data. My G3 has superb standby battery life while it is on WiFi.
6) I think that is a common occurrence with the G3, the phone is rebooting as the phone is getting too hot.

Thanks a lot for the info guys !
When my phone reboots during antutu it is not even warm. I even tried doing the benchmark in the fridge and same thing happened. It just makes no sense.
Also 1 more question - Is there some kind of a list of apps that are safe to remove/dissable ?

[FIXED] Amazing battery discharge

Hello,
Since I updated to MM, lot of things went wrong. Few days ago I got 3-5 hours SoT, and now it is really bad.. this morning it shows 1 hour estimated left and the phone is hot.
Instled GSam, will post screenshots later today.
What's the problem?
did you do a factory reset after updating to MM ?

I have noticed a similar effect on mine, but not so drastic. I used to get over 4hrs+ Screen Time On using Lollipop. Now 3 hours or less. Factory resetting didn't help.
Yes, everything wiped, all reset.. so no old data. MM is not as good as LP :/

Thank you for letting us know. Was thinking of installing MM but I value battery life over everything else.
..Sent from an XDA modified LG G4 on Verizon..
Yeah mate, np.. keep with Lollipop, MM is really worst. I'm using my G4 for about 20 minutes and already lost 10%. Battery life is incredibly low
I'm seriously thinking about downgrading to LP.
I tried going back to LP, but this didn't work for me. I thought I has bricked my G4, but thankfully LG Bridge managed to restore to factory settings.
As well as draining the battery twice as quickly (at least twice as quickly), I can now no longer pair my G4 with my car (so I can take calls by pressing a button on the steering wheel). Bluetooth just keeps crashing on the G4.
I wish I could go back to LP easily. After my last experience trying to install LP KDZ, I'm not confident enough to try it again.
Which tool/method did you use?
On the main MM battery life topic, it seems that the downgrade is successful through LGUP soft.
Am on same boat as you guys. Now, I updated my wifes G3 with MM and the battery time is far better than on Lollipop or on my G4! Go figure[emoji15]
Ok so, I found the okayest fix: if you use custom ROM (like Genisys), flash the stock kernel, it's much butter.
At the moment, no more battery drain/random reboot/overheating . :good:
Seems that SUPEREX kernel is faulty.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982087005245
I found that the battery is almost 50% on MM compared to LL. From MM i often set the "economy mode" (or what's the name) and turn off wifi and bluetooth wehn I don't use it.
Using it with LG what is almost impossible, the watch drain the battery too much.
Luckili:
1- 20C is out, we have just to whait, I heard that on 20A battery has not that huge battery problem, so maybe they found a bug in the 20B
2-you can carry spare cheap batteries with you, I have always one in my jean poket...
1- I'm going to update to 20c ASAP (downloading right now..)
2- the issue was related to custom kernel SUPEREX integrated in Genisys ROM, flashing stock fixed it
3- I have an extra LG battery + charging cradle and a thin power bank (10000 mAh)

Battery life after android 6 update sucks

Hi,
Since I upgraded to android 6 my battery life got so much worse, I tried about 5 roms, still sucks. Why is this ? should I update radio or something ?
Thank you for reading
How many days are you giving it before trying another rom?
I have a similar experience updating stock OTA update. LP gave me more SOT prior to update. I then factory reset my M8 which improved battery slightly but still not as good as LP

Consider installing something like GSam Battery Monitor in order to figure out what's sucking down your battery.
Also, your battery life will be lower until you make a full round in your phone-- that is, using everything you normally use once or twice, as caches and the system optimizes to your usage. Consider giving a new ROM a few days to a week.
Consider also doing a full system / cache wipe before installing another ROM.
thx for the feed back guys, will try to give it time =)

Mine is Vodafone too, but from Italy. I have version 4.17.161.11.
My battery life has evened out to be kind of close to what I used to get but it's not as good as mm. I did do a factory reset and calibrated the battery and I'm now getting almost 3hrs of sot but it's about 30mins to 1hr less then before. I'm going to be putting my m9 in for a repair (hopefully free) to get my battery replaced before my warranty with Vodafone is up so if the battery does get replaced I'll do some tests to see if it's my battery or the update itself. If it's the update then I can light a fire under their butts to hopefully get Vodafone au and HTC to release a fix.

Good to know and I don't know about any work around but just check what apps are sucking battery. I did delete the one gallery app or whatever it's called as it was using over 25% of battery usage. I'd recommend calibrating your battery to get the best out of your phone. (I drain my phone to 0% or as close as I can get then charge it up to 100% with the phone off, unplug then turn it on drain it close to 5% if I can then charge the phone like normal and that usually works for me) I'll still put my phone in as it always turns off at 15% battery left or around that and won't turn on so it thinks it's dead with no charge when it's got 15% left.

I'd have to disagree as no phone in the world new or old has the ability to say,it's okay, you can root me now,it s the right time lmao, imo it's the 1st thing you do when you get a phone lol

See u are having 32gb memory and more over rooting is done to optimize apps and battery usage , optimization can also be done by disabling factory apps , root is my choice to install new rom
my battery dran now is like watching water go down a sink hole. I can literally see the drain go by one percent at a time ....i already disabled alot of my usual apps. but "HTC dot view" keeps coming up and i cannot disable even though I didn't activate it? didnt have this problem in Marshmallow.
i didnt disable Chrome (to save battery) because it now (in Nougat) apparently handles what Android System Webview app used to do in Marshmallow. (OT ,TL;DR I got a blank screen issue for Google play app because of Android Webvoew app problems not being updated...only solved it by auto-updating all my entire apps then updating the Android webview app and then switching back to Chrome and updating Chrome, for it all to work in Nougat..ie..Keep Chrome or Android Webview updated seems is required , or you may get blank screen on some apps ).

I deleted chrome from my phone and it's working just fine. There must have been some other issue with your phone.
And in regard to the battery drain: My phone's battery actually lasts longer than on MM. I only face a drain when I update Magisk from version 10.2 to 11.1. But I guess that info won't help you much since some of you are using a non-rooted stock rom...
Oh, and you better don't let your battery reach 0%. Lithium-ion batteries can get damaged by doing so. Android calibrates the battery automatically during the normal usage. And the memory effect only exists on Nickel–cadmium batteries so you don't have to fear losing capacity if you charge your M9 at higher percentages.

tks. I agree never let battery goto 0%. I never have either.
btw is your rom also vodafone Nougat? could be related to that rom?? , only because a few users here and I heard others seem to have same serious battery drain issue?
I had the "Blank app " issue when I updated to Nougat which (after gpogling and searching for a long while i found) some other Sony device users so had same blank google play app problem. The dev said that App System Webview had not been updated 'prior' to upgrading from Marshmallow to Nougat which caused thr problem.. apparently some bug in Nougat?. (I never updated Android webiew nor Chrome in marshmallow before). But after updating it, the blank screen on GooglePlay problem was rectified immediately...
apparently if you do disable Chrome, then Android System webview is automatically activated (for non rooted phones)? seems like we 'must' use one or the other now in Nougat stock?
TBH I just dont want to have the same ( really annoying) Google blank screen bug come back again..ya I could root this M9, my previous M9 was rooted, but after a 2nd replacement M9 , having had the previous one die suddenly, I decided keep this stock for the meantime.
Anyone know is there anyway Disable Dot View in stock Nougat? it keeps waking up. I think I recall I could disable it in settings Marshmallow? cant seem to do it in Nougat. Appreciate any advice.
Webview is needed for every app that has access to the internet, shows you data from the internet and isn't a browser (e.g. the play store). Therefore, it's always recommended to keep it up to date. On the one hand due to all the security fixes the updates contain and on the other hand due to all the bug fixes and compatibility fixes.
No, I'm using the European unbranded firmware and the latest venom rom which is based on the firmware I'm using. But there are more than enough reports about battery drain in that thread, too. The same applies to the Nougat OTA discussion thread in the General section. The strange thing is that no everyone is facing them even if those "lucky" users use the same firmware as those with the drain.
I can't help you with dot view since I have a dot view case and never tried to disable it on older firmware versions.

Horrible Battery Life on Nougat

So Just to announce where I am coming from, I am a Sony fan for the past 4 years, Had the Z2 and was totally blown away by the battery life it offered. Then I got the Z5P and even though the battery performance was nowhere near the Z2 I still got through an entire day with it without issues so I was happy.
Then came the Nougat update and all hell broke loose. I am literally getting just 6 hrs of battery life since the update. And even when it is idle it still drains battery like atleast 2 percent every hour.
Also the charging is very slow. I have a quick charger that used to take the battery life from 0 to 20 in atleast 10 - 15 mins. But now it actually drains the battery if I am using the phone while charging. And yes I have switched off the battery optimization option.
Any help will be appreciated even if it is just a confirmation that I am not the only one having this issue, which will at least let me know that it is not just my phone.
There must be some process with corrupted data after de update which is constantly executing something. I recommend you to do a full wipe, factory reset

Oh did not know this could happen. Will definitely try doing a full wipe and see how things go! Thanks a lot!
I never fully trust OTA updates, because it keeps all the applications data and some special case of your current configuration maybe is not "converted" to the new version and causes the programs to behave weird. Have you looked at the battery usage? Maybe you find the process which a huge % of battery eaten, and just wiping that app data is enough

Thanks for the reply! Yeah I looked at the battery usage stats and no specific app is draining more than 2 percent of the battery over a charge. The only things that have taken most out of the battery are 1. The Screen On Time which is to expected and 2. The Idle Phone which takes around 15% consistently in every charge.

Also the charging is very slow. I have a quick charger that used to take the battery life from 0 to 20 in atleast 10 - 15 mins. But now it actually drains the battery if I am using the phone while charging. And yes I have switched off the battery optimization option.
Any help will be appreciated even if it is just a confirmation that I am not the only one having this issue, which will at least let me know that it is not just my phone.

after updating to .372 , i learned from internet that this build has battery draining issues. ( i never faced any )
after updating to .376. , the phone is as steady stable as my other xperias (btw z5p is my 6th xperia )
now there is however a catch.
1. if you updated on OTA , this means the update of 1.2gb via ota only replaced certain files from .305 to make it .372 build (android 6 to 7) --- such OTA updates USUALLY ends up having problems (in general) with battery draining issues. Such problems i personally faced during updating from honeycomb to ics. - in short whenever update is available; always install FRESH
2. if your bootloader is locked then use xperia companion to install fresh after wiping all data. (makebackups)
3. if your phone is not rooted then try disabling all un necessary apps under Apps section.
----
Trivia
You cannot compare Z5p with predecessors like Z3/Z2/Z1 and Z since
1. they were always smaller in screen size / resolution and were not 4k
2. They stops at Android 5 / 6 as their last builds and battery life was awesome w.r.t consumption

That´s great! Can´t put my finger on it... Lots of people having exact same issue, something in common just not yet known

however some of friends on XDA agrees that .305 (android 6.0.1) (came out dec2016) is the BEST build ever for z5p. addressed all battery issues and it was the final build for z5p on android 6.0.1
even i am thinking to degrade my phone due to ram consumption of N is very high!
this is why xzp has 4gb ram!
I need to know. If I updated my phone to .376 and it's having this lack of battery life, DO I HAVE TO SELL IT OR DISPOSE OF IT BECAUSE IT'S LITERALLY A LOST CAUSE NOW? (P.S. I immediately did a factory reset after the Nougat install completed.)
Because apparently if you updated to this build, then returned to the last Marshmallow build, THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED, and reloading nougat will only make things worse. And if you updated to .378, it not only does this not get fixed, it breaks your headphone jack to boot.
Please help. I am freaking out about this battery life. I lost 60 PERCENT IN 6 HOURS OF BASICALLY PODCASTS. ?

Well, after all my trials I flashed MM back and everything is back to normal. The issue is with 7 so not sure what happened to your handset
EDIT: Re-upgraded once again= battery 8 hour life. Go into About Phone, Status and disable battery optimization. The handset reboots and incredibly this morning it was like the old days .

Maybe I'll try that. The best I was able to do was 21 hours with one bar LTE, 6 hour's sleep, and 3h40m screen on time with several hour's worth of Pocket Casts.
i confirm that on build .33 i lost my battery even on stamina mode one percent every 10 minuets over using wifi , it just keeps the battery when device is screen off -_- its horrible i didnt have this kind of problem with .253 and im wondering revert back to MM
