Exclamation mark next to signal data 4g - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my Nexus 5x I often find I've got 4G signal but an exclamation mark next "!" it symbol and no data i.e can't load web pages etc...
Wifi is turned on, its not connected to anything but even off nothing happens differently. I can toggle 4G on / off it makes little difference but ever so often it starts working ! Friends in the same location, same time, same network but different brand handsets are working fine.
I can't find a way on the phone for it to tell me what it thinks the problem is and it works the majority of the time, this is mainly when I'm at work I notice the problem.
I'm nowhere near my data limit and at a loss as to the problem...

Right now my sim card is in Moto X 2013 and I do see "!" mark next to 4G at times(saw a lot yesterday). I am also at work and inside the building I am only getting 4G, but as soon as I step outside, phone gets LTE signal. I also noticed that when in the building my internet is very slow or non existent. Because of that sending/receiving MMS also fails, but we do have Wi-Fi which is a relief

Yes I've rebooted..... this doesn't solve the problem.

HSPA Uplink, but no downlink

Ok so I am noticing a rather strange problem which started yesterday. My phone shows the H icon for data connection, lets assume its HSPA (or 3.5G or whatever you want to call it).
When I am using the phone, the H up arrow is light up meaning it is using or has established uplink. When I try to browse the internet or anything that requires downlink connection, the down arrow under the H symbol is never lit up and obviously I don't see my content.
This has been happening since yesterday. I updated to the newest radio a few hours ago, but it didn't help. I have tried turning mobile data on and off. The APN settings I am using are the same ones I have been using for a year now. Once in a while, the internet works sporadically, but more often than not, it is stuck with the uplink arrow constantly on.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
This is something that I notice on my dz as well, but I never believed that this due to an actual problem that could be solved.
I always figured this is simply due to poor reception, so the phone will request a certain webpage (thus the up-link) but no sufficient connection can be established and the requested information never arrives on your phone. Usually that's just a rare few spots or because of bad weather.
Another issue would be if the up-link symbol is continuously active, in this case I'd rather suspect background syncing or malware.

GSM full bars greyed out with no connection

Hey guys I've got the GSM version and every now and then my signal bars turn grey, this is with full signal even showing 3g buts its grey and won't call out or load data. I'm not a twit and understand that phones loose signal its just strange it comes back randomly also. Very annoying.
I'm on 4.0.1 Google build anyone else get this issue?

grey full bars
i dont have a technical response to this question other than i only notice this during times of transition between either booting up the phone or switching to wifi on or off equally.
The phone usually checks to sync when it has been on standby and you then hit the power button. If you theoretically switch between wifi and 3g/4g during this time it would force a transition which could yield a situation as you describe.
This happens to me too sometimes. What network do you have?

You have to find out the true reason why your connection is being interrupted. The bars going grey instead of blue is just reflecting the fact that your connection isn't persistent and you don't have a full sync with Google.
Blue bars = connection to Google servers
Grey bars = no Google servers

When you open the browser does it say that there is no network coverage and you have to turn off the airplane mode?
I was having the same issue with 4.0.1, I was getting disconnect from the mobile network almost every 2-3 hours and the only way to get online again was to do a reset. But now with 4.0.2 everything seems to work fine.
My carrier (Simyo in Spain) is a "virtual operator" (MVNO), so I'm thinking that the issue was somehow related with the “data was disconnected due to roaming” bug in 4.0.1.
Been having same issues on Wifi and 3g, causes huge issues with push gmail
Edit: I removed dns changer from my phone, and seems to be helping

Thanks Menek, I am still on 4.0.1. Hopefully soon I will get an OTA update.
Hello,
This thread kind of died down but it is very important. Here is the issue logged by other users with Google. http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22503
Has anybody managed to find a fix?
I called Samsung yesterday and they advised me to return the phone. I don't feel like being without a phone for 2 weeks. Besides it is sort of proven that it is a Rom issue (am I correct?). What do you say guys, shall i send it to Samsung or wait for an update from Google? The problem doesn't happen very often, every once in a while. I suppose this is why the battery runs out pretty quickly as it tries to connect to a network too often. And when it doesn't establish connection it goes to Airplane mode.
Any more comments on this issue?

Milestone 6 - intermittent loss of 3G services

For some reason I cant post in the Dev forum in the Milestone thread...
The ROM is impressive. But I seem to be having 3G data issues.
It seems that I lose 3G service and it will not come back until I stop/start the data toggle. The status bar still shows the 3G icon, but the bars are just light grey and I do not receive email and cant browse. I can still send texts and get/make calls. I havent been able to figure out a pattern yet, but the latest occurrence happened after I came out of an area with no signal (NYC Subway). Usually service comes back automatically as Im walking up the stairs to the outside world but sometimes it never comes back until I toggle. It also happens sometimes even if I dont go into an area with no signal (at the office). After I turn off the data toggle, and turn it back on, the 3G icon comes back on the status bar and the bars turn blue again and shows up/down arrow activity.
Anyone else seeing something similar?
I'm having trouble with 3g and I have no 4g on milestone 6 as well. I went back to an older build until it the next one drops and see if it's fixed.

4G connects for me with no problem when I want to use it.
But I lost 3G data again this morning after coming out of the subway. Noticed I had emails in my inbox at work and checked my phone and 3G was stuck again.
I'm having connectivity problems on my copy of Milestone6 as well. Same 3G problems as OP, and can't connect 4G like 2ndP. As well, I'm unable to browse wifi signals, nor able to connect. :-/

Why data connection lost and why reboot fixed it?

Hi,
Using GNex, stock JB 4.11, Wind Mobile Canada, $40 plan, unlimited data & Canada wide.
Please excuse in advance for the novice questions. I am not yet familiar with Wind Mobile. The customer support is too long and submitting a question to their website required around 5 days to get an answer which is generally irrelevant in my short experience. Hope some expert users here can share some of your knowledge.
Last week, suddenly during a phone conversation, the phone became totally disconnected voice & data. The next morning, the situation didn't improve, so I rebooted the phone (power off / on). Then the phone could connect to voice, but no data (gray icon instead of blue). I stayed with no data for 3 days. During that time, I tried a few reboots, changing various network settings (APN, Network Operators, Data roaming, etc.). None of that worked, then I made another reboot and suddenly everything is back to normal (no roaming and data OK).
Q1. Signal strength variation: what is the cause that makes a signal vary? For the same location, sometimes signal changes from 3 bars to 1 within a few minutes.
Q2. What caused a network to black out temporarily? That's what I got last week during the entire night. The reception icon is a black outline triangle (no voice, no data). I purposely disabled roaming, I admit a network could have some issues, but I have hard time to admit that a disruption could last 12 hours. May be the issue is my phone? It was not rebooted since 7 days.
Q3. How often should I reboot the phone? By reboot, I mean power off/on. I hope this is the correct term. Is it possible that a frequent reboot help the phone to be more responsive? I tend to think so because all the network issues I got were magically fixed by reboot.
Q4. Why would a reboot fix a data connection issue? In my case, a few reboots on day 1 didn't fix. Many network settings changes didn't reconnect data. Then finally another reboot on day 3 fixed data connection.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Welcome to the Nexus and its crap radio. Try turning off 4G, once I did that I never lost signal again. With 4G on I get disconnected from the network randomly throughout the day

How to turn off 4G? Wind Mobile operates on AWS network 1700/2100 MHz (UMTS band 4), and HSPA+ for data. I believe it is not 4G. On the phone Network Settings, there is only an option "Use only 2G Network" which is not a good option for me. If I enabled "Use only 2G Network" the phone shuts off data and changes to roaming mode.
just set ur nexus on airplane mode for a second..
then disable the airplane mode instantly..
u ll gain ur net working widout reboot... )

Oh wow, that's a cool tips.
I hope someone can answers my other questions, I like to understand the "how things works" side.

Any number of influences. A microwave, air ionization, temperature, humidity, output from the tower not consistant, and plus just the variations of the phone. Going by bars is a bad way to gauge anyways, it could have only dropped signal for a split second but it doesnt update the bars frequently so it would appear to be low signal longer than it could have actually been. Your phone works by line of sight, picture a tight wire from your phone to the tower, anything that crosses in that line reduces signal.

That actually is hard to answer, you would need to contact your provider to see if they have a log of an outage at that time before going into whether it was the phone or not.

Never unless things act funny. A reboot is usually healthy for operating systems (i know many do not). I personally don't intentionally reboot mine, it usually happens because I'm screwing with clock speeds

Like any software there are chance of a 'glitch' where the modem and the driver have issues communicating. Toggling airplane mode off and then back on re-initializes this and in most cases fixes the communication problem. Rebooting will have the same effect. I would only worry if you are needing to do this often.

Hope this helps a little.
I would also contact your provider. They may have an issue with the tower you are connecting to.
Perfectly understood, appreciated very much your detailed answers. Can you please clarify below?

Makes sense. Indeed, when I said "For the same location, sometimes signal changes from 3 bars to 1 within a few minutes". Actually, I mean a room and I was walking/moving so may be the orientation of the phone explained why the reception was inconstant.
Regarding your answer above output from the tower not consistant. Is it possible that the tower reduces its signal strength when the number of users increases? Similar to users sharing a finite band width?
Yes, even orientation of the phone can have an affect, depends how the antenna is set up inside the phone, i havent seen it so i have no answer for that.
ya, as you move around you could have been what blocked the direct sight of the tower, signal passes through nonmetal objects but each time it does, it loses strength depending what it passes through
@OP I also have the same problem, I am also with Wind and had to do force reboot to make it reboot.

Flash the UGLC1 radio to your nexus. I'm with Wind as well and that radio gets me good service!

Network loss

Ok guys, having a real problem here. Often when I am connected to either 3g or wifi my phone will stop picking up signal suddenly. AIt's almost every time and I will have to disconnect from the network manually and reconnect and it will instantly pick up signal again for a while then it'll repeat. When it suddenly stops it doesn't show on the status bar that I have lost any signal. With 3g its kinda just at a stand still not receiving or uploading and with wifi it just stays the same but I'm still not picking up a signal because by web pages won't load neither will other apps that require network load until I manully disconnect and reconnect. Is anyone else having a problem like this? I don't think it was like this when I firs got my phone a month ago. I'm at a loss. Any help is much appreciated. Oh I'm completely stock btw haven't rooted........(yet) lol

It has happened to me a couple times that I have noticed. I will be streaming music and walking and all of a sudden, nothing.
Even a soft reboot does not help. It will require a full reboot generally to solve the issue. I have not been able to identify the issue specifically. I suspect it might be related to LTE testing in my area.
What's the LTE status in your area?
No lte yet but as I stated earlier it happens on wifi too. It'll still show that the signal is connected but my pages want load at all after it happens and when I try to refresh it'll say that the webpage could not load because there is no network. Only until I manually shut off 3g or wifi in the settings and turn it back on will it pick up signal again but only for about 5 minutes. This has happened in various locations on 3g and wifi and will even happen at home wifi.

This has happened to me as well... A lot . Stock.. on various roms.. No lte as well.. But it's in the works

I've had this problem too. Sprint replaced my phone and it never happened again.
I think reactivating hands free actually fixed my problem...for now anyway. It's not losing network like it was before. All I did was enter on the phone dial pad ##72786# that'll reactivate. Hope this helps
