Well you either root and flash the radio, flash an earlier stock firmware, call your provider or pay...

Ya,
I'm on it... just found a link for stock roms for Canadian carriers and I am downloading all of them... I am a noob so the first thing I want to try is to revert to an earlier version ( 4.1.1 ) just to see if I can unlock the phone...
Trying to find what you want is difficult because the results you get depend on how you word the query... A lot of times so far I have had no results come back and so I had to re-word the question...

Be very cautious, make sure you don't flash an international stock file
In your case (assuming your Note 2 did come from Rogers) simply flash the stock SGH-I317M 4.1.1 ROM with Odin. You might have to factory reset if you get crashes or force closes (this can be done from stock recovery) unlock, then flash the 4.1.2 ROM back with Odin.

I usually purchase my phones off contract so just call my provider (AT&T) and request the code, have never been denied.

It's different with Canadian carriers unfortunately
Unlike AT&T, Canadian carriers haven't been forced by law (or binding court settlement, as AT&T) into giving out unlock codes, even for phones bought outright or whose contract has been fulfilled.
So yeah, using the stock Odin images should keep the flash counter at 0 and be relatively straightforward.
The other method involves a custom recovery, such as TWRP.
Pros:
Much smaller download size. (Odin, TWRP - Odin-flashable version, two modem update zips all total under 75 MB, iirc. Two full stock images: over 2 GB.)
Takes care of custom recovery installation for later and makes rooting a piece of cake.
Cons:
Custom flash counter is triggered.
System status will probably show as modified.

Got some question, if i'm running international stock rom base running on my AT&T Note 2 i can't unlock my phone? What if I provide just my IMEI number to unlocking company and unlock it, will still screw up my phone?
I have done this on my older phones (3phones Samsung Infuse 4g) and have success no problems at all unlocking them just providing IMEI number to unlocking company.

Quick question...
How long is it supposed to take to flash the .md5 file?
It's been a while since I've had to flash with Odin, but I'd say a few minutes tops. If it's been sitting there for half an hour, something's not working. Ideally, it is just stuck as "establishing protocol for connection" or something like that and nothing has been written yet.
Make sure that Kies is properly and completely shut down as it will interfere with Odin. (I usually skip installing Kies altogether.)

So, how do I get out of the download on the phone? The phone is in download mode and has been for hours now.... It seems to me that Odin doesn't recognize the phone. The message box in Odin has messages in it... the last message says " <OSM> All threads completed. ( succeed 0 / failed 0 )
These are the instructions I have been using:
Extract the root66_xxx_I317MVLALJ2.tar.md5 from the .7z file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66_xxx_I317MVLALJ2.tar.md5 you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
This is what the message box says in Odin ( ver. 3.04 & 3.07 ) :
<OSM> Enter CS for md5..
<OSM> Check md5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> root66_RWC_I317MVLALJ2.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking md5 finished successfully..l
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed ( succeed 0 / failed 0 )
The phone just sits in download mode and doesn't seem to do anything. I hit "Finish" in Odin then close the program. Then I shut down the phone and let it reboot and.... VOILA!!! Absolutely no change... The phone still has Android 4.1.2 installed...
Hmmmm, I must be doing something wrong... I just don't know what...
Tanamir, I find I almost always have to back up my pictures and anything else I want to keep, then do a clean wipe of the device ( factory reset ) before flashing anything using the odin and the cable method.
I also find I need to usually remove the external sd card when doing this too. hope that helps.

I did remove everything of value to me that was on the phone before I did the factory reset but that was a couple of days ago... I did some video of my son today and took a few pics of him but that is no problem to download and then I will do another quick wipe and then try flashing again...
There is no MicroSD card in my unit since I did the original factory wipe and subsequent wipes and flashes return 0 results ( i.e.: I still have Android 4.1.2 installed). At this point I am left to ponder whether: a) I am a complete idiot and cant follow basic instructions, b) That there might be a problem with the phone in download mode and it is not responding to Odin, c) That there might be a problem with the ROM's I downloaded from another part of the XDA site...
Default [HOWTO] [ROOT] No Tripping Flash Counter - [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel]
This is a root injected FACTORY Stock I317 Odin Flashable Image. You flash this in Odin just as you would the completely stock ROM from samsung. I've simply injected the su binary and SuperSu app so you now have rooted stock image.
So if you want to keep your device stock yet have the functionality of root without tripping the counter or messing up OTA updates then this would be your best bet.
You can get ODIN here
and the drivers for the SGH-I317 so ODIN can detect your phone can be found at Samsung's site. Click on the Manuals & Downloads tab at the bottom and then on Software for the latest driver.

Optional, Recovery (will trip counter):
It seems loading any custom recovery will trip the download mode flash counter. Loading a non stock recovery will also prevent you from successfully applying any OTA updates however here is a procedure for any who want a non-stock recovery:
Currently I see TWRP has support for this device so the instructions here will install that recovery.
Option 1: Download GooManager from the Play store. Once installed click the menu and select "Install OpenRecovery Script".
Option 2: Download the TWRP recovery image here. Copy it to the /sdcard of your phone.
Connect your phone to your computer and use adb
type adb shell
once in the shell run su
then
dd if=/sdcard/http://goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/t0lteatt/openrecovery-twrp-2.4.4.0-t0lteatt.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9
Alternate if unfamiliar with adb commands
Grab android terminal emulator from the play store and run the same commands starting with su and then the dd command.
De-Bloater
If you've made it this far with a stock, rooted phone with CWM or TWRP and you don't want to flash a custom rom (which will do its own de-bloating) you can check out my mrRobinson Note II De-Bloater to easily get rid of bloat system apps you no longer want to see. Simply flash in CWM or TWRP like anything else and you will be presented with a menu system to choose what to remove. If you are unsure it is safe to pick Minimal and still get a decent de-bloat.
Miscellaneous Files
CWM/TWRP Flashable OTA Update: I took the stock I317UCALK7 update.zip that was posted by reinbeau (thanks!) and simply made it flashable with a non-stock recovery preserving root through the process. I see nothing in here that would wipe data but did not test it myself.
Download: root66_OTA_I317_UCALJ2_to_UCALK7.zip
History:
I've injected root into other stock images and those threads have a lot of valuable information which could answer some questions that may arise here. If you have time to do some reading here are a few of the informative ones:
Samsung Galaxy S3 [ATT / Bell / Telus / Rogers / Sasktel ]
Samsung Galaxy S3 [TMO / Wind / Mobilicity]
Also did sprint and vzw but there isn't much there that won't be covered above.
FAQ
Does this remove bloatware?
A: No. It is same as stock, nothing is removed.
Does this use an unsecured boot.img
A: No. This flashes the stock boot.img in the ODIN image.
If my flash counter has been tripped, and I flash this and reset the counter, will it stay at 0.
A: Yes, as long as you don't then flash a non-stock recovery.
More to come...
The answer to my earlier question is A) I am an idiot...
I have had an AHA!!! moment when I realized that there was some critical info missing from what I needed to do... If you read the instructions above they say that you:
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the root66_xxx_I317MVLALJ2.tar.md5 you downloaded.
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and
when done let phone reboot.
If you have issues flashing with Odin please ensure you are using the microusb cable that came with the phone, users have had issues using other cables.
This is wrong... I found that in order to work, Odin has to be running BEFORE you connect the phone in download mode so that Odin recognizes the phone, it didn't work for me the other way around.
Although I was able to get the phone to flash, and Odin gave the phone a pass... I closed Odin and disconnected the phone from the computer but something is wrong and the phone is stuck a the "Samsung" screen where the letters kind of glow blue every two seconds... maybe I disconnected the phone from the computer too early so I am going to try to reflash the phone again and I will leave the phone alone to see what happens...
Something is wrong and the phone won't go any further than the aforementioned Samsung screen... I haven't unplugged the phone from the USB cable yet but when I restart the phone it wants to download files from the computer and its a good thing that I installed the Samsung USB driver pkg, but it seems that I am missing something... The notice on the computer says that "Device driver software was not successfully installed" followed by please consult with your device manufacturer for assistance in getting this device installed: Samsung mobile MTP device X Failed.
Help.
Hello Tanamir,
Got your PM but I'd rather answer it here. There's a bit of a) in your situation
DO NOT cross-flash between Note 2 variants unless you know what you're doing.
Root doesn't matter for this, and you could just as well flash the unmodified Odin images (either from here or sammobile). But let's stick with the mrRobinson ROMs since you've already got them and they'll work. (I checked, and they do contain the modem image, which I wasn't entirely sure of at first.)
The "blue glow" Samsung screen is the boot animation, your phone is stuck there in what is called a boot loop. Most likely, something in the 4.1.1 ALJ2 ROM doesn't like the data from your previous 4.1.2 BMA3 installation. In this situation a factory reset from recovery should solve it. (Also known as "clearing user data", I forget the exact term used in the Samsung stock recovery.) To boot in recovery, with the phone powered off: volume up + home + power. You might need to hold it and see the Samsung text flash twice before releasing.
Good luck,
Darkshado

Ya,
I'm a noob, but I try to figure out whats going on before I ask for help... Anyway, I was afraid you or someone else was gonna tell me I was eating Boot Loops... thanks, I've had quite enough... *BURP*... I kinda had that feeling, so I powered down the phone and went back into download mode and decided to try to go back to 4.1.2. But I didn't know about recovery so I decided to try to go back to Rogers 4.1.2 from MrRobinson ROM and it worked. I got the phone back but it is still locked to Rogers. Anyhow, what I wanted to try now that I am using this altered ROM (Oh yeah, I found this SuperSU icon in my apps folder...) was to try to go back to 4.1.1 now because of the 4.1.2 ROM that is now installed. ( They are both MrRobinson ROM's so they should be compatible, whereas before I was flashing back from a stock ROM to a modified one...) that is my thinking. As far as the recovery option goes, would that do me any good at this point? My phone is working, albeit now with an altered ROM and it is still locked to Rogers, although when I try to flash back this time I hope it works.... GOD, why am I reminded of "Back to the Future"?
Thanks for the info, talk atcha soon...

Hi,
Hi I was given an s3 sprint. It doesn't get past the sprint screen, but when plugged in it goes all the way until played with then it'll reboot. It does however go into download and recovery mode which leads me to believe its a software problem. The phone is not rooted/ fully stock. Could someone walk me through rooting, installing custom recovery and ROM via Odin? Also there seems to be no water damage. Per download mode:: binary-samsung official
System satus-official
Qualcomm secure boot enable
Warranty-0
Bootloader ap swaev-2
PS I already tried Odin but failed at aboot mbn. Now upon booting it reads ... firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again?
Pleas ask in here instead. Also first get the phone working by either flashing it using kies 2.6, or by using odin and flashing this image. Be sure to unzip it first.
Does anyone else get an error with Kies 3? when I connect my Edge Kies gives me an error! I want to perform a device recovery via Kies that's my last hope. I tried to root my Edge and now I'm stuck with a bricked phone and yes I have tried Odin 3.10.6 and regular s6 Auto Root from Chainfire as well. nothing works for me, I've looked everywhere to find the G925t firmware but no luck again. I'm really screwed.:crying:
Same
I'm guessing kies wont recognize it til after 4/10 since technically nobody is supposed to have it yet. Just a guess though.

Do the following: open Kies, click on tools, Firmware upgrade and initialisation, enter your model number and serial number and let it download the firmware, after an hour or so depending on your connection speed the firmware will be downloaded and your phone will reboot into recovery to install the firmware. done
Use Samsung Smart Switch instead. It has replaced Kies for the newer phones.
Here is my video showing it being used to flash Stock Firmware to the Edge.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...p/flash-stock-firmware-using-samsung-t3079176
Supersport, I have a SM-G900A (Galaxy S5 ATT) and Kies 3 and Smart Switch says it is an unsupported device. I got to the part to enter the model and serial and it comes up unsupported again. I tried a different USB cable and also tried Smart Switch on a Mac. The white USB3 Samsung cable does not allow the phone to be recognized by the Mac so I used an old USB2 cable and it hangs on "connecting to your device".
I tried downgrading to Android 4.4.2 so I could root it and it is in the "firmware encountered an issue" screen with the yellow triangle. Ack!

It sounds like the MAC had issues with installing the driver. I'm not positive if your model is supported by Smart Switch yet, but I would suggest using Smart Switch as KIES has stopped official support for most of the newer models. If it's not supported yet, it should be soon. They keep adding devices. When I got my S6 Edge, it took about a week for it to be supported, but that's when Smart Switch had just come out too. Wish I was more help.
Anyone else have success getting this model to flash???
Bootloop
I initially used odin to flash OI1 update, after a rom I was using caused problems and I got bootloop. It changed bootloader value to b:3 and I'm unable to downgrade now so I used smart switch which didn't recognize device so used emergency recovery and still bootloop. I have factory reset and wipe cache multiple times along with adb side load and individual flashes of bootloader, modem, kernel, flashed custom kernel and twrp to access fix permissions and to mount partitions with advanced wipe etc and still wont boot past logo. Also during one fix attempt phone said can't mount system.. Idk I'm not understanding where the problem is .everything says successful but I'm still in bootloop. Please help. I've spent hours everyday for the past week searching & trying different things that seem might help so open to any suggestions.
I seem to be having the same issue. Tried to manually update my phone via Odin but nothing has worked so far.... Now I just get an error on my phone that says
"An error has occured while updating the device software. Use the Emergency recovery function in the Smart Switch PC software."
What am I missing here?? It's a Samsung phone, and it's been around for over a year (S6 Edge T-Mobile)...

If nothing else is working, you can try this for the T-Mobile S6 Edge. ONLY the T-Mobile S6 Edge is supported, so PLEASE verify it's the correct one.

It's a known working version of Odin, the Samsung Driver Package, and Firmware. Place your phone into Download Mode before using.
If any issues, let me know and we'll work through them.

No worries, I got it working! Thank you!
SOLUTION FOR ANYONE HAVING ISSUES STILL
1. Make sure you have Samsung Smart Switch Downloaded
2. Make sure Smart Switch is updated.
3. Click "more" across the top
4. Click "Emergency software recovery and initialization"
5. Click "Device initialization" across the top
6. In the model name box, type in exactly your model number. It is case sensitive. (for me, it was located on the back of my phone on the bottom named "SM-G925T)
7. It will then ask you for your serial number which can be found by holding POWER, HOME, and VOLUME DOWN
8. PROFIT$$$$$$$
Will this wipe the data like recorded audio and video files? This phone belongs to a friend with cancer and I'm trying to unload message he recorded for his family. I need to recover the data first and foremost and then getting the phone operation is secondary. I've got conflicting reports of what a firmware flash will do to recorded media files. I'm hoping the SDcard area will be unaffected but I need to know beyond a shadow of a doubt before I do anything.
Yes it will, it will behave like a factory reset. It will ask you to backup your storage content if it recognizes your phone you may be able to fix it.

Hoping for some advice how to get Sprint Note 4 running again. The phone has never been rooted. Up until a couple of weeks ago most of the OTA updates had been received and applied no problem. A couple of weeks ago my wife pulled it out of her bag and showed me it was on the update screen and had been for a couple of hours eventually the batter went dead. We took out the dead battery charged it and tried to restart. It goes to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 white on black screen vibrates twice then the screen goes black and it repeats the same thing over and over.
Now i'm not sure how to proceed. I'm familiar with Odin and rooting my own phones but leave my wifes stock normally.
First i tried reset in recovery - When i boot to recovery after a few seconds the android robot lies on its back with a red triangle over it. At the top of the recovery screen it says Android system recovery - LRX22C.N910PVPU3BOF5. I tried wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partion and rebooting but makes no difference.
I thought install official firmware manually
I put the phone in download mode it displays
current binary: samsung official
system status: official
reactivation lock: off
knox warranty void: 0x0
I downloaded a stock firmware N910PVPU3BOF5_N910PSPT3BOF5_N910PVPU3BOF5_HOME.tar.md5
installed Odin3 v3.10.6.exe
installed F/W this using Odin.
Odin finishes normally, box turns green and PASS! but the phone just restarts and does the boot looping thing.
I don't know what to do next - suggestions? Thanks
Have you tried booting to safe mode, you'll have to Google it as I'm not sure of the procedure for stock phone. What your describing doesn't sound good, I would have thought the odin flash would have worked.
You could always try to odin OG5 Stock tar, can be downloaded from kies. Sorry i cannot offer more but it sounds like you're doing all the right things.

Yes, I agree, that's good advice. I'd say try KIES first, then safe mode if KIES doesn't yield results.
Did you get to safe mode? From power off, hold power until 2nd splash screen, release and press-hold power plus volume up until it boots or vibrates. I think if you continue to hold, it loops until you release but boots into safe mode.
Unlock screen and go into security (if it boots) and uncheck Reactivation lock, Knox active protection and make sure device isn't encrypted. Finger scanner; remove registered finger prints, and change lock-screen to swipe. Then factory reset or try whichever you prefer to try next. If normal reboot still fails, then factory reset in safe mode and reboot. If still loops, try the KIES or Odin flash. I'm not too familiar with stock and default security but looking at OG5 security options, seems there's redundancies that could potentially be in play preventing Odin flash as if the phone thinks the phone is in the hands of someone other than the registered owner. You may need to bypass it all to boot or flash.
Typically, it's data corruption that causes a loop that stock tar doesn't fix in tars OF5 and below. OG5 has frequent reports of wiping user data but I've seen occasional reports of inability to flash OG5 tar from OF5. I saw another today that reported having to Odin OF5 tar again and take OTA to get to OG5. I asked what the failure indications were but so far only know his rooted phone couldn't get there without taking those steps. So perhaps you're on the right track, it's just the security and our security that's being a hindrance.

thanks for the suggestions. I tried booting into safe mode but i can never get past the first white on black Samsung Note 4 powered by android screen. No matter how long i hold just the power button it just goes black and back to this screen every few seconds. I never get to the second boot splash screen. Any other way to force the phone into Safe mode?
I've installed kies and smart switch. The phone is not recognized by either whilst boot looping. If i put it in download mode and connect it kies3 displays unsupported device. How do i get Kies let me download a copy of OG5 firmware to my pc to try with Odin? I can't figure this out. I connected my own Note 4 to kies and it recognizes it fine and displays This is the latest firmware Current og5 latest og5 but i still don't see how to download a fresh copy of OG5 to the PC? In Kies i go to Tools, Firmware upgrade and initialisation. I'm entering the model name SM-N910P and then it wants a serial number. How do i determine this? I tried the Dec and Hex numbers from the back of the phone, i tried the Hex number plus a 1 and plus a 9 - i read this is the imei and this is confirmed from looking in settings on my other note 4. I'd really like to get a clean download of sprint OG5 from Kies i've searched for instructions without success.
Suggestions what i can try next? Thanks

This may help your PC detect the phone better in recovery mode for KIES. Can't say it gets past unsupported device but it was a problem I had with adb in recovery on my Windows 8.1 machine. Read the OP and post 14 to see if it applies to you. Try detecting phone in recovery.

I've always found safe mode a little difficult to get into but once I found my phone had went there when I was carrying something wrapped around the phone while in a belt pouch. Holding both buttons must have been the way it accidentally got there.
That unsatisfied s/n inquiry has puzzled some of us here and we haven't found a solution AFAIK.
I'm not sure but you may have to also Odin OF5 and take OTA like some others have had to do. There are some tar files in general forum that others succeeded with. Sorry but that's about all I can think of. Unless you can get it to Best Buy Samsung Experience or Sprint service center and explain what happened. They should be able to flash stock back on it. That may be best solution since there was no doubt about root or void warranty on that one.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I found more instruction for getting into safe mode which work on my other note 4 but no success with this one.
I was trying to Odin OF5 it goes all the way through in Odin and displays success but never actually boots.
Would it be possible to replace the stock recovery with something else that might have additional features to get a working f/w to install and then downgrade back to stock or will i risk just making things more screwed up? I wouldn't care about taking OTA updates if i could just get a working F/W back onto this phone.
Encryption and security were not enabled on the phone.
So without S/N what is the work around to use Kies with Sprint phones?
Since you're pure stock and given the problems I'd stay away from a custom recovery at this point. Your reporting a successful odin flash of stock OF5 then rebooting right back to the same boot loop problem is sounding more and more like something has seriously failed in the phone, I'd start thinking replacement.

I've searched, I've tried but to no avail have I been able to fix my poor note 8..and I'm hoping someone can help!
I HAD a stock 4.4.2 Note 8 (AT&T version I-467) running, and I went with the Kingroot method to root. The device rooted but ran like a dog, and in my infinite wisdom did a wipe/reset to see if that would help.
Now here is where I stand:
1) The device boots to a screen saying unauthorized firmware
2) I can get to download mode (power+vol. down+Home)
3) I can NOT get to the screen with (power+col. up+Home)
I have tried Kies, and it won't take the serial number/model number, and Odin can only seem to flash the boot loaders. I have tried 4 different ROM's from samsung (with different international codes), and none of them are able to update the system (they all fail at about 90%). I've tried the all in one toolkit, and since I can't enable USB debugging at this point, it never recognizes the device as attached.
I've tried manually flashing with Odin TWRP, Phils, and stock recovery,(in the hopes of getting one to take so I could load a new ROM from SD card) and they all fail as well.
When I split any of the system images I can load a boot loader file from them, and it succeeds, but everything else fails.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, or am I completely hosed?

+1 on that, I'm stuck in an exact same situation. No help from Samsung either. After rooting with Kingroot my tab started acting like crazy with flickering screen and random reboots, did exactly like you did.
There are many with similar issue and as per my research most of them have given up. Getting a system image dump from a rooted tab running 4.4.2 might be the only way out. Unless of course Samsung/AT&T decides to release full odin flashable image.
I was in a similar situation from trying to fix a eff problem and took my sgh-i467 to a Samsung Experience Center located in many Best Buys and they fixed it free of charge. They were not able to fix my issue with a corrupted EFF file that is keeping my 4G from working though as I had hoped. If you have a Best Buy around with the Samsung Kiosk in it I would give it a try. I ended up trying a few different ones to fix the eff issue and some of the employees at the Samsung centers were about as smart as a head of cabbage (they laughed at me when I said my Note 8 was the issue and said "you can't have a Note 8 the Note 5 just came out") but some were at least helpful and listened when I told them they have the tools to fix my tab (reflash it back to life) and they did. Hopefully they can help you.
man Im in the same exact situation.. And I cant seem to find any help anywhere. I cant locate a stock 4.4.2 kit kat odin flashable file anywhere for the n5120
