You need to use sunshine ($25 US) to get s-off: http://theroot.ninja/
Although, you may still be able to flash the firmware if its signed and matches your CID. Where did you get the firmware from, and what is your device's CID?
Alternately with s-on, you can return to stock ROM (for your CID and present firmware number), and corresponding stock recovery. Then OTA to update the firmware: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860

Since OS version 3.28.401.9 is listed on your bootloader screen (this is your current firmware version number), you want to restore the same stock nandroid and recovery in order to OTA and update your firmware. You can't just pick any one, it has to be 3.28.401.9
The author of that thread (ckpv5) is pretty responsive about re-uploading dead links. Ask him nicely in that thread to re-upload 3.28.401.9, and I bet he will do so.

Dude, what the heck are you trying to do???
Those are not firmware zips, and you can not flash them that way!!!
The files from those threads are stock nandroids and stock recovery, completely different from firmware. If you don't know the difference, you need to read and learn before doing anything more.
Restoring stock nandroid and stock recovery in order to OTA (and update firmware) is a completely different approach than flashing a firmware.zip. A completely valid one, yes. But if you are trying to restore 3.28.401.9 nandroid, as I mentioned above, you need to follow the instructions in the first post of that thread. Why do you think those instructions are there???
Hey,
I have ARHD 43.0 on my HTC M8 and now want to update to ARHD 45.0.
Theoretically I could just flash ARHD 45.0 zip in TWRP and restart?
But now I want to know if there are certain advantages if I upgrade other things. (If there are upgrades).
For example I have TWRP 2.8.1.0. Is there an advantage for TWRP 2.8.7.0?
Or in my bootloader, the following Information stands:
"M8_UL PVT SHIP S-OFF
CID-11111111
HBOOT-3.19.0.0000
RADIO-1.22.21331147A1.29G
OpenDSP-v46.2.2-00564-M8974_F0.0811
OS-3.28.401.9"
Is there a new kernel/firmware I can upgrade and if yes, does it has advantages?
Greetings

The info you posted indicated your firmware is old (KitKat). So you need to update to Lollipop firmware by one of the methods I've described above in order to run LP based Sense ROMs. Otherwise you will encounter severe bugs like extreme long boot times (or not boot) and broken WiFi.

Check your firmware against your installed rom version - happens when firmware needs update
Htc
Forgot to mention that it wouldnt turn on since it came out the box.
Kernel - 3.4.0 elemental
Baseband - 1.19.21331147a1
Build numb - 3.28.401.9
Htc
Hboot - 3.18.0.0000
Radio- 1.19.21331147a1
Os - doesn't mention anything at all

Yeah, that baseband is wrong against that 3.28.401.9, update firmware, should be 1.22.223.....
So which firmware you suggest, any link to download a zip to flash?
What about the os that is empty?

OS is blank because you got custom recovery, probably TWRP - flash firmware from within fastboot -- http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/HTC/HTC_One_M8/401/3.28.401.9.zip

I would really recommend you S-Off your device, if you want to flash firmware
otherwise:
1- flash signed firmware incrementally, signed firmware expects previous updates to already be there, so if you skip directly to the last, you'll end up stuck with a high version firmware, but missing previous updates!!!!!!
2- you need to relock your bootloader, for fastboot oem rebootRUU mode flashes to work
Thanks for the response.
i tryed to s-off with firewater but i think this service has stopped?or does it still work as a method?
Device is s-on with unlocked bootloader. I read that with s-on u cant flash kernels-radios-baseband. Is radio equal to baseband? a guy in earlier post said that to get my wifi working i have to update the firmware. Exactly he said that baseband is wrong against that 3.28.401.9, update firmware, should be 1.22.223.
So how do i get that firmware + how i flash it + in what state should the device be?
thats what im asking

hi, just a quick FYI, you need to quote (ie reply) or mention (for example @ nkk71 <- without the space) someone, for them to get notified ... otherwise it may go unnoticed.
anyway,
1- firewater is discontinued and in either case was not very suited for the M8 anyway, except for some of the very early models it would have failed. sunshine ($25) is the only known software solution for s-off
2- the response earlier about what you see in Settings->About (3.28.401.9) only refers to the version the ROM (not firmware) is based on
3- the firmware you get from a "fastboot getvar all" from version-main; if that's missing (a bug in some twrp versions), you can make an educated guess by looking at hboot version + radio + date in bootloader
4- radio is equal to baseband, but not equal to firmware.... firmware contains a lot more than just hboot and radio
5- with s-on, you can only flash signed firmwares (these are usually extracted from OTA.zips), and have to match your MID and CID... you also need to have bootloader relocked for RUU mode flash to work
^^ plus, since those are updates, they will only contain whatever was changed from the previous OTA update, that's why if you intend on staying s-on, you should flash those incrementally, and not skip a version
(for example, the "latest" signed firmware could just be an update to hboot or something, but missing all the previous radio, touchscreen, etc updates.... because and official update [by definition] implies all the previous updates were already installed)
hope that helps a bit

your hboot+baseband version would indicate you are either on 2.22.401.4 or .5 (minor difference)
you should flash in increasing order:
3.28.401.6.zip
3.28.401.7.zip
3.28.401.9.zip
from here: http://xda7.androidrevolution.org/db_mirror/Firmware/index.php?dir=HTC/HTC_One_M8/401/
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip 3.28.401.6.zip
fastboot flash zip 3.28.401.6.zip <- yes twice, make sure it says successful/finished
fastboot reboot-bootloader
once you are back in bootloader, make sure the OS- line has been updated to the version you flashed, and is not in red (if it is in red, that means the flash didnt complete properly)
then repeat the above commands for the 2 other firmwares
Note: the higher the firmware, the less chances of getting S-OFF, just to let you know

You can't flash firmware via recovery!
Search for vomers firmware thread all instructions are there.
You need an 02 firmware. The wwe ones don't work on your phone. And to flash firmwares you need to be in RUU mode.
But look for your official firmware first. Or return the phone to its original stock rom + recovery and update via official ota's
Thanks! So I had tried to flash via RUU mode but it had errored - presumably cause it rejected the ROM file.
My initial firmware update when I updated to rev10.1 from stock android was from vomer's guide. Should I be downloading 4.16.1540.8 without red text?

Go to the general section and look for the stock backup thread. Have a real good read there and return your phone to FULL stock and update via ota.

Maybe your firmware is newer then the link I gave. But with the O2 cid you cant use lollipop with sense. You cant Flash that firmware. So you have to go back on stock.

Maybe your firmware is newer then the link I gave. But with the O2 cid you cant use lollipop with sense. You cant Flash that firmware. So you have to go back on stock.

ah that sucks. ah well.
So to go back on stock, I wan tto use the "Method 2 - flashing RUU (ROM Update Utility)" method. It's not entirely clear on how to do this - do I download the stock recovery 1.54.2016.5 img and folder onto my pc and issue fastboot oem lock command? or does the folder go on the sdcard and the img on my computer? or neither??

Ah man really? What do you dont understand?
If you want to use that RUU to have that developer update to Lollipop you have to change the O2 cid. If you want to change the cid you have to be s-off. Are you not? Use sunshine.

resolved my issue:
- went back to android rev 11.1 (what i was previously using) and wiped device.
- once booted, installed sunshine and went s-off
- updated cid to supercid
- updated firmware to latest 4.x
- updated and wiped into andrdoid rev 30.1
Working like a charm now
Thanks everyone for the massive help!

it's a lot of money for what it is, but to be fair $25 for having a working phone that I can now flash as I like and is now running lollipop was worth it!

Hi,
I have a big problem with my HTC one M8.
I was tring to back sense from GPE conversion, and now I do not know how to proceed. Maybe bricked my phone.
My situation is as follows:
Relocked. Adb can't find my device so I can not unlock again.
No recovery, no ROM installed. So, I can not flag USB debug. Can't proceed since relocked. Any suggestion?

Yes s-off. Not sure how, but I am in recovery. Something looks like stock, I think. What can I do from here? Should I install twrp recovery? Or what else?
Thank you.

You can't install custom recovery with a (re)locked bootloader.
With s-off, you shouldn't ever relock the bootloader, as its no longer a requirement to RUU once s-off. But that's neither here nor there at this point, just info for future reference.
Any response to: fastboot devices
Make sure the phone is in fastboot mode.
Try to run the GPE RUU with phone in fastboot mode, to get the phone back up and running at least. Assuming you are still on the GPE CID and MID.
How can I flash ruu gpe with boot loader relocked? Is it possible? It gives me error.

I think you've got it backwards. With s-on the bootloader actually needs to be relocked (or locked) in order to RUU.
With s-off, RUU will run whether the bootloader is unlocked, relocked, or locked.
In other words, the bootloader being relocked is not the problem.
What is the error message?
Did you change the CID/MID yet (what are they currently)? The CID and MID need to match the RUU.

When you get a chance, you should list exactly (in detail, and in order) what you have done to the phone to get to this point.
I can't tell how far you go in the conversion (GPE>Sense) but it seems you at least got partway (if you indeed got a partition size error).
Also need to know current CID and MID.

I would highly suggest not to post to another user's troubleshooting thread like this, as it doesn't look like the same problem at all (and in my experience rarely is, even when folks will post "I have the same issue"). You really should have just started your own thread, and would have been justified doing so IMO. Posting here just confuses matters for you, the OP and those trying to help.
But DON'T start another thread now (and add even more confusion). I'll ask the mods if they can move this post to its own thread.
ok, sorry

Thanks for reply.
I went now in fastoob mode and tried to flash the RUU GPE again.
The error is:
macbooks-MacBook-Proownloads macbook$ ./fastboot-mac flash RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.1-4.04.1700.4.zip
unknown partition 'RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.1-4.04.1700.4.zip'
error: cannot determine image filename for 'RUU-HTC_One_M8_GPE_5.1-4.04.1700.4.zip'
Just to clarify. I successfully when in GPE (with conversation). The problem was when going back to Sense. I do not know exactly what I did wrong.
My CID is 11111111
My MID is 0P6B10000
Really do not know how to proceed.
M
I unfortunately don't know jack about how to use fastboot and other actions on a Mac. I'm also not that familiar with running the RUU as a zip (I always do it on a PC with the RUU .exe).
But it looks like you just have the command syntax wrong. I think it should be:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip filename.zip
But it also look to me like nothing is actually "wrong" (aside from adb not working?). The phone not booting after relocking the bootloader is normal and intentional. You should just be able to run the desired Sense RUU, provided you have the right MID.
I am back to GPE!
Stupid me! I missed a "zip" in the fastboot command...
Thank you for support!
I will try again to go back to Sense.

Some folks have had to do this, some haven't. But yes, if the RUU fails and gives a image size error, flashing the Sense firmware manually (then RUU) is the right thing to do.
This part has never made sense to me, since the RUU flashes firmware anyway, by definition. All I can guess, is that it has to do with the sequence in which the firmware is flashed (versus other partitions) in the RUU.

I just said in the post you quoted: some folks are fine just running the RUU (to convert from GPE to Sense); but when the RUU alone doesn't work, run the firmware manually first, then the RUU.
Running the firmware manually first (then RUU) has a higher chance of working, I'd say.

Yes - 11111111 or SuperCID is a universal CID, RUU/OTA will accept that.
You need to relock bootloader before you run RUU because your device now is S-On
and you need a Windows PC with USB2.0 and latest HTC USB driver installed.
If you're not sure about HTC USB driver - download HTC Sync Manager - http://www.htc.com/us/support/software/htc-sync-manager.aspx
install then after uninstall HTC Sync Manager but leave the HTC USB driver

1. I don't know why - you asked for the RUU so I gave you the link. You should know better whether you need it or not.
2. No .. as long as the ROM in your system now is non-rooted (never rooted) and stock recovery is installed .. should be fine.
If you're not sure then run the RUU then do OTA. Before that you can try to update and see whether it will success or fail.

Your getvar doesn't show any irregularity.
I updated my M8 also on same CID 11111111 and MID 0P6B12000
So I have no idea .. I first helped because you asked for RUU.
Lets wait if anyone else will come to help for other problem
@redpoint73 - if you are around .. maybe you can help to confirm whether this device is AT&T or Developer Edition.
I have a feeling this is an AT&T converted to DEV ED and re S-On
@tapuz12ewq
Another possibility is your device is a AT&T originally .. you also can install RUU for AT&T, only thing is there is no Marshmallow update yet for AT&T - you can get the RUU 4.28.502.2 here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2751432

Thanks,
so I little bit confused , to fix it , which RUU are safe to install , 4.28.502.2 or 6.12.1540.4 ?
6.12.1540.4 definitely won't work, you'll get error 155 unless HTC already fix the RUU.
You can only try either 4.16.1540.8 or 4.28.502.2 and I'm not so sure whether installing 4.28.502.2 will success or not because your current version is 4.16.1540.8

That's stock recovery for lollipop.
LRX22C - Android 5.0.1
LRX22G - Android 5.0.2
So which of the RUU that your tried ? I have a feeling that both will fail unless the device is S-Off again. The previous owner shouldn't change the S-Off status unless he put all the correct CID/MID to the device.
Maybe it needs the actual CID BS_US001 instead of 11111111 to get the OTA, personally I never have any problem with 11111111

It's weird that the RUU can be successfully installed but not OTA.
So .. you can try this to install next RUU 6.12.1540.4

fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
You'll see -

Yes .. that's a wise move to S-Off then you can change the CID to BS_US001 then you should be able to install OTA whenever it is available.
Also note, this 6.12.1540.4 maybe the last major update as the HTC support for major update end by March or April 2016.

Okay i found the solution...
SDCard has not working propertly, i've used another one with 2PS6IMG_PERFUM[email protected]61226_79.07_F_release_495903_signed_2.zip and it start flashing
This same RUU wont flash via RUU mode Fastboot... #HEADER_ERROR
On M7 i don't get these problems with RUU.
Maybe i'm doing something wrong...

Remake the zip to 2PS6IMG.zip and copy of te the sdcard, boot to download mode and it wil be recognized. Flash it......
Stop making it very difficult with fastboot commands, not needed at all. And stop texting all RUU files, totally a waste of time. You need the RUU with the NUMBER that is WRITTEN next to OS in the DOWNLOAD mode. Stop doing all sorts of stuff that is totally irrelevant. If the RUU.zip from here doesn't work you do something wrong.
If your OS line is 2.41.401.x you download that RUU and do as i wrote in the first lines of this post.
You try all different sorts of RUU's so that indicates to me that you didn't bother to check out your download mode
Generally i get what i want.
Sorry for shi* post, but sometimes i just dont get it.
I know that the stock roms have a os versions and phone only accept only specific one.
But sometimes like today my sdcard just trick me so hard ;d and i just trying a different method like fastboot oem rebootRUU + fastboot flash zip zipname.zip, thats all.
Thanks for your time @Mr Hofs and @santod040 (Your rom on M7 GPE
is one of the better ones) .

"generally i get what i want" .....jeeeze that comment made me crinch for a moment. Actually the lack of proper reading our posts had you downloading all sorts of RUU files which were unnecessary. It's not your sdcard that tricked you it's your unfocused mind.
Cheers
