Currently I am running g925tuvu3doi1 and I was wondering if I should take the OTA to g925tuvu3doj7 the reason why I ask is because I want to root my phone without tripping knox and was hoping someone would come up with a root method. I don't want to upgrade and risk that I cannot downgrade if a root method does come out. Is there any way to flash the update through odin without flashing the new bootloader?

Sorry if this was already asked... If I unlock the bootloader and root, will I still get OTA updates? (I dont plan on flashing ROM's just yet...). I heard Verizon has a fix for the signal issues in the works and I do not want to miss that OTA.
If you install a custom recovery like clockwork mod you won't be able to install an OTA but you don't have to install that.

So I can unlock and root and still get OTA's as long as I don't install CWM?

Yes you will get the update. Note that after the OTA you will lose root and just need to re-root the device.
Okay thank you!
rooted all my devices, havent rooted this one yet in fear for it messing with OTA. if i use the insecure boot imagine flashing via odin root method (option #1 on the toolkit), will i lose the ability to receive OTA updates?
You could always skip it, remove root and get it later on that day.
If you keep all the stock apps it would probably remove root without effecting anything else.

rooting by itself shoukdnt cause problems if you're using stock recovery and don't modify system files. Ota can interfere with root though.

I believe you would be able to get an OTA if you were just rooted, but after applying it, it would break your root and your would have to root over again. If you have a custom recovery the OTA would just fail to install. I could be wrong on the first part, it's been a long time since I only rooted, without installing a custom recovery as well.

what about if i install OTA rootkeeper? would that make a difference?
The biggest thing you need to consider is whether you have a custom recovery or stock. Only a stock recovery will let an OTA update flash. If it's custom you'll want to either flash to stock before trying to update or wait a day or so unitl someone uploads a rooted .zip version of the update.
i think im going to stay with stock recovery.
so i just rooted and installed CWM. if i reflash stock recovery via odin, will the phone stay rooted?
Whats the best Guide to root 4.3 OTA and custom recovery?
Got a replacement phone due to hardware issue and this one came with 4.3 already on it...My warranty is up and i know KNOX will be tripped.
I will want to install custom 4.3 and 4.4 roms
Thanks Guys.....I don't need a brick lol
EDIT
used cf root and flashed twrp via odin..Knox showing tripped but who cares lol
Root?

Hi..sorry if this has been answered, but I don't see it on t-mobile.
I am planning to root my phone to run the regionlock (hopefully unlock sim). Getting confused with all the different methods available.
I don't want to trip Knox..was planning to use RDLV, but then read something about Kingo, but that wasn't listed as a method for rooting on the FAQ?
So what's the difference? Is one better than other? I also read that any installation of ROMs will trigger the knox? So if I rooted, how can I get to the newest firmware? Just unroot and update OTA?
If you are 4.3 you can root without tripping knox. I used RDLV I felt is was safer. XDA removed Kingo, it may not be safe. I know many have used it and are a big fan of Kingo. I did not like idea of some third party rooting my phone, they can do anything they choose to do. That is just my personal choice.
If you are 4.4.2 Kitkat, the rooting method available will trip Knox.
OTA, will not work automatically. You will need to use Odin. There are threads on how to all the above.
I am stock rooted 4.3, I have not jump on the Kitkat wagon yet. There are mixed reviews on moving to Kitkat.
Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks. if I stay rooted but want to move up to Kitkat but not use custom ROM, can I flash the offical firmware? And would that trigger KNOX? I read any flashing ROM will trigger it too? This is much more complicated...did this stuff a few years ago with HTC...now there's so much more stuff to consider

i think you can flash to 4.4.2 (KitKat) using odin mobile pro without triggering knox, at least that's what i've read on here that others have done successfully. if you want to upgrade you'll need to upgrade your bootloader too. keep in mind that once you do this, you can't revert or downgrade back to jellybean 4.3 or downgrade the bootloader (knox requires a signed bootloader to go with a signed official ROM, apparently).
personally if i were you i'd stay on jellybean 4.3 and use the root de la vega method. i'm a bit miffed mine came with 4.4.2 already on it.
i miss how easy it all was back on HTC too could root, flash recovery, ROM, kernel, and return to factory settings like new. *sigh*

Do you mean flashing 4.4.2 official rom which will become unroot again right? How about going to 4.4.2 and stay root with stock type ROM..not customized?

if you go the mobile odin pro route, it should root it again for you if it gets unrooted
you can get the steps on how to upgrade to 4.4.2 and keep root with knox 0x0 using mobile odin pro on this thread:

I saw in that thread, he spent $4 for odin pro?
I am getting the G6 and want to keep the warranty intact.
I know about the ping pong root and knox.
Heard if you install custom recovery (TWRP) - trips knox warranty void.
I would like to root and install my current apps using titanium BU- this i believe can be done with root only by just transferring the backups to the new phone correct?
Can i make a nandroid backup with stock recovery?
Also to apply OTA updates from sprint or samsung the phone will need to be unrooted yes?
Only way to unroot is to odin to stock correct?
TIA

looking forward to joining the S6 nation!

You have everything correct. Just understand that if you update with ota to 5.11, you will only be able to Odin to 5.11..... not to 5.02. Currently all kernels are tripping knox on 5.11. You will have to root and twrp 5.02 and get a custom rom with new updates as samsung releases it to preserve knox. So hope to God you received an s6 with 5.02 cuz otherwize you will have to trip knox as of this writing for 5.11 to obtain root. Once your trip and even if you go back to stock..... you will still be tripped and lose warranty. .... until someone figures it out. Currently only thing you lose is samsung pay.
