Bug causing videos to appear washed out on 5X and 6P - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So there is a kernel bug that causes videos to appear washed out when hardware accelerated decoding is used for playback. The RGB range is compressed from 0-255 to something like 16-235, causing blacks to appear dark gray and colors to appear more muted. The YouTube app is one place videos are affected as it uses hardware acceleration for playback, but videos played in Chrome are played properly because hardware acceleration is not used. On the Nexus 6P, a lot of people noticed this right away because it was obvious that the AMOLED screen was never turning off its pixels and displaying true blacks in videos like it's supposed to. On the Nexus 5X it's less obvious because LCD screens always display somewhat gray blacks, so you may not have noticed it, but if you go in a dark room and compare the same YouTube video in the YouTube app vs Chrome, it should be pretty obvious that the video looks more washed out in the YouTube app. The Nexus 5X has a great screen, but this bug is making it look rather crappy when watching videos in the YouTube app or other apps that use hardware decoding, so we need to join the Nexus 6P users and voice our disappointment to Google so that they will fix it!
Here are some relevant links where you can read more about the issue. I encourage you to comment and let Google know that this bug affects the 5X as well.

Terrible this glaring problem has persisted so long. I got sick of waiting for Google to respond and installed the PACMan custom Lollipop ROM on my Nexus Player. Gives me much more freedom and now my nice TV doesn't look like a Walmart special buy. Hope you guys persuade Google to fix it. No excuse for this. At least the work of the XDA community saved it from the trash bin and I am really enjoying it now.

Looks like this bug was fixed in 6.0.1. YouTube videos don't look washed out on the 5X now

Nice to know it's been updated! I am coming from an AMOLED device (S3) so I was thinking the greyed blacks were a normal thing for LCDs. I noticed this in Youtube but let it go for the above reason. Guess I gotta try out 6.0.1 soon.

[Q] Would this qualify as defective?

My screen shows banding on screens with gradients, like the call log screen, or screens with certain colors, like when I'm playing wordfeud. Even when I'm browsing the white background has faint horizontal and vertical lines.
All of this is only visible when on the lowest brightness setting. So when I'm browsing in bed at night etc it's really annoying.
I went to the (3) store here in denmark, but because it was a well lit room, the problem was barely visible and they said they'd have to send it in for "assesment", and best if i could come back in January and send it in (for 2-3 weeks). I'm just afraid they'll just return it with "problem not found"
I DID manage to report the problem to them on the 14th day after i bought it, their own DOA limit, but I've got a feeling I'm going to get screwed. Especially because the in store phone ALSO seemed to show the same color banding on the call log background.
I've tried taking some pictures that maximize the problem here: http://imgur.com/a/CbKYi#9
Are you guys seeing the same thing on any of your devices?
I love the phone to death otherwise, but it's like a scratch on a brand new car, it's annoying me a LOT.
unfortunately, that's just how they all are. has to do with the display type. both of the nexus' i've had were the same way, as was the display unit in my local verizon store.

You aren't seeing "banding" in the traditional screwed up screen sense, you're seeing the back of the display. I think it's just part of being SAMOLED and Pentile. I never noticed it until I started reading all the threads about people complaining over "banding" (and I don't think you're complaining LOL ).
Bump it up from the dimmest setting just a bit and most of it will go away. Our dimmest setting is REALLY good, at least compared to my old SGS. I also like how are screens don't have that SGS SAMOLED blue tint to them.

This image clearly shows banding and not the grainy display BG:

go to that call log screen again and press vol down + power. then look at the screen shot on the computer.
it looks the same
the background is ment to look like that
All 4 phones and 7 models that I've gotten to use from Samsung have this problem.
SAMOLED just isn't very good yet.

happy to hear my phone is not defective, but then again im very disappointed that this is a quality issue with the phone.
I read tons off aritcles discussing the difference between Super AMOLED and Super AMOLED plus (pentile and RGB) and this forum probably did the best job of explaining it
now is this also the reason why whites arent really white while having hte phone in auto brighntess? is the screen is dim, my "people" app is not white, actually far from it. but when the brightness is maxed out it looks magnificent

I was disappointed by the screen quality at first too, but the more I use the phone the less I notice it. I've even started to really like other aspects of the display that were lacking in other phones with a "clean" screen. Colors are much more vibrant for one, this is very visible when watching videos on the phone when I'm at the gym.

Strange screen issue

I've found something odd with my screen, and although I intend to do an exchange on my S3 I figured I'd share it here to see if anyone else has seen it too.
What it seems to be is that a couple chunks of pixels go entirely black when their section of the screen calls for being black, while the rest don't. I'll try to show you what I mean:
This is a shot of my screen, running a screen test app on an all-black image. It's extremely hard to get a picture of a dark screen in a dark room with a cheap point-and-shoot, and you'll have to ignore the stuck pixels on the camera's CCD, but the red arrows point you to the bits in question (I've also turned the contrast all the way down, and brightness all the way up, in photoshop because otherwise the spots weren't very clear... and still aren't in focus... but in person these are easily visible as two dark spots in an otherwise gray background when you look at the screen in a dark place). You'll want to view it at full size, and again I'm sorry the image is so blurry but viewed in person the "blobs" in the image are in fact crisp edged vaguely tetris-block-shaped pieces of total blackness surrounded by dark gray.
For comparison this is my girlfriend's Sprint S3 screen shot with the same camera under the same conditions and with the same photoshop effect applied.
If you want to see if yours does the same thing, download "Screen Test" from the market, turn the screen's brightness up all the way, change it to the black screen (the second testing screen), then go into a totally dark room. You may have to look just off to the side of the device to see them at first, but once you've done that and seen the spots you can't un-see them.
Lest you think I'm being overly picky (although I would argue any defect in a device I paid $550+tax for is one defect too many) it IS possible to notice this even under normal usage conditions. I kept seeing a spot on the Facebook app every time I would reload a page, and every time I thought a piece of something had gotten onto the screen, but before I could wipe it away it had disappeared. It may be a minor annoyance, but it really bugs me, so I'm going to exchange it. I figured I'd document it before I did, though, just in case anyone else had seen the same things.
A lot of people have this issue, including me. But since I literally never see it unless I'm using Screen Filter at a low percentage, it's not much of a bother.
The only time I see it is when i play draw something.
Screen blobs....
They have plagued Samsung screens for a while now.
The sad part is.. from my experience with the blobs, Even with a device that doesn't have them they eventually show up.

My search led me here! I myself noticed this tonight while I was watching Underworld Awakening in my bedroom with the lights off. I have a nice blotch on the center right and a few spots scattered throughout the screen. Looks like I will have to unroot and watch this out:/ what a pain.
Here is my screen shots may be hard to see from these pics.l but its definitely there.

[Q] About those viewing angles...

Hi to all
I'm pretty new to the tablet market and I just bought the note 10.1 2014. I'm in my first 14 days where I can exchange/return my tablet and I want to make sure everything is ok with my stuff.
I've read countless online reviews before making my choice and, as you all know, one of the strongest aspect of the note 10.1 2014 is the display. Most if not everybody is praising the resolution, the colors, minimal color shifting, brightness and the viewing angles. Now, I want to make sure my understanding of lcd displays/viewing angles is good.
My tablet's display is gorgeous... when I look at it straight at it. I have the minimal light bleed on the edge which only shows on black and has 0 impact on colors which I'm ok with (all demos in stores are the same so...) As soon as I tilt the tablet though (vertically or horizontally), colors become very dull. Actually, colors do not shift but everything becomes dimmer/duller. Now, I suspect this is normal behavior from a backlit LCD but still, I keep reading reviews stating the display is gorgeous and bright even from an angle which is not 100% right for mine. I've tried to look at videos/pictures online but most people doing reviews actually setup a camera right in front of the tablet and barely move it once it's turned on so it's not helping me. So when you guys are saying the tablet's display stays vivid and colorful from every angle, are you getting the same kind of behavior my tablet has and are not talking about this because this is normal behavior for an LCD display or is my tablet's display defective?
Thank you very much in advance for your cooperation. If needed, I could take pictures.

As is typical of the Samsung displays, the viewing angle stability is great. The colors remain stable regardless of the viewing angle and we did not note any great loss in brightness.

Thank you very much for your reply. Well, I guess my tablet's screen is pretty similar to the test unit provided in the review. My definition of stable brightness and colors is pretty different from the behavior of that display But to know my screen behaves normally compared to other tablets is good to know.
Just enjoy this tablet..Don't spend hours looking for problems that arent there. This tablet is wonderful , I have had mine since December with no issues at all. I'm rooted with tons of stuff on mine. Most of the problems I have been reading about are people with way too much time on their hands. Have a beer , and love your tablet!!

Don't get me wrong here, maybe I did put too much emphasis on the display and I'm sorry about this. I love my tablet too. I'm just discovering the power of the tablet and the S-Pen, the integration is pretty amazing.
Cheers

Does anyone has a pixel C without purple Blur when scrolling?

Hello I have received my third pixel c.
I had to RMA the forst two, because the on/off button was broken, and the second one becase the sensons wre not working as expècted.
The three devices had a thing in common, a terrible purple blur when srolling, for example white text over a black background. I've wrote in this forum and it semms thta are devices that do not have this issue. Now i'm not sure if there is any pixel c arround the world without this screen issue.
Attached two pictures from a médium quality screen (galaxy tab A, 200 €) and the pixel C (500€). The pictures has been taken from testufo.com/#test=stutter&demo=smooth&foreground=FFFFFF&background=000000&max=12&pps=1920, with an LG G3,
where the purple Blur is obvious.
Could anyone test the link provided above and tell me if you could see the white/gray line instead of a white/purple?
I dont know if i should RMA the third pixel C or this is something bad with this screen.

The pixel c I ordered about 3 weeks ago had the same problem with the screen. I RMAed it and the replacement has the problem too. I've requested a replacement for that one too. My Nexus 10 is fine. The rep I talked with (John?) said he had not dealt with any other customer besides me that had the problem and assured me that it was indeed a defect. I'm not convinced...
I'm using the stutters and tearing test (I believe that's the one you're using, right?) and while the bars do look purple while moving, screenshots show that they are in fact white.
So I tried that test and I do see a very slight purple tint, I recorded the screen with the 240fps slo-mo mode on my Nexus 6P and I see it there too.
It's so slight that I honestly don't care if it's actually a problem or not. Everything else about this screen impresses me enough.
Thanks for answering. I have talked again with google and they are going to send me another one. As i could not test the device in the first 15 days they are not going to give my money back. Again they answer me also that this issue was new for them and has never been reported by any customer.
Could anybody post an photo showing that a pixel c screen without this defect exists?
The is also a test i am doing and is the vsynctester dot com. The VSYNC letters should be grey and this screen shows them as light pink.
Regards

Because it's a screen related issue and not the gpu. You can only capture it, if you take a photo from the screen with another device

Makes sense, then I guess mine has it too but I never notice it in daily usage. I just assumed it was an optical illusion.

Defective Pixel XL? *VIDEO*

So when I was testing out the video stabilization of the Pixel XL in my computer room I noticed everything looks really.. low quality.
I then took out my previous phone, a Nexus 6, and noticed the video had a lot more detail.
Here is the comparison video that I took.
Nexus 6 video: https://youtu.be/NWhoCGFh_JA
Pixel XL Video: https://youtu.be/W1dwmw33M98
See what I mean? The Pixel XL can't possibly take videos like that, while the Nexus 6 makes them look decent at least.
And just to point out, it is only video. Pictures are fine.
Here is a comparison for pictures between the two phones:
Nexus 6: http://i.imgur.com/Hms05Oh.jpg
Pixel XL: http://i.imgur.com/yWFfkHR.jpg
Anyone else having this issue?
EDIT: And yes, the desk looks fine in the video. It's the rest of the video that is a huge problem. Close up the Pixel XL seems to do fine, it's when the subject isn't within a couple of feet is where it has problems.
hard to tell at the moment.. youtube makes videos look bad most of the time anyways.

What do you mean it's hard to tell? Even on youtube the difference is pretty obvious.

Google did announce a software patch was coming to fix a few small software errors with the camera.
