hi i am new to rooting this is the first time to give it a go and it aint going very well.. im stuck on step one unlocking the boot loader however with some googleing i think i know why. Is it true that samsung s4 mini doesint use fastboot and what i actualy need to do to be able to root and/or install custom roms is to break knox? not unlock bootloader as samsung devices dont use this which is why fastboot cant see my device even though adb can?
and once i break/disable knox im good to root?
There's a few guides on here under dev and general topics. Easiest way is just to flash a custom recovery like CWM if you want to use custom roms. You will need Odin and Samsung drivers to complete the task.
Make sure you are using the files for the right variant of the s4 mini. I9195 has an "i" and a "L" variant also which use different software.

Hi all.
I'm not a fan of the rom on my phone so I might end up rooting and going down the custom rom route eventually. For now, I wanted to know if its possible for me to change the stock rom on my handset without too much hassle? I got the One X second hand and it looks like the phones from somewhere in Asia so I've got a bunch of stock apps from out that way so I wanted to know if I could flash the phone with a UK or EU rom without breaking the phone?
.. and if so.. how?
Basically of comes down to this
Unlock the bootloader (this will reset the phone to stock)
Flash a custom recovery and make a NANDROID BACKUP RIGHT AWAY !
Push the superuser.zip from the recovery to the rom to gain root acces or flash a brand new custom rom
But befor you start you need to read up in here, all sorts of guides and also tools. Get to learn adb/fastboot commands. That's very important !
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832891
Yeah I already know how to do all that, I've done a few different models but I generally wanted to know if I could just flash the current stock from with a stock from from the UK?
Im not too bothered for rooting and custom roms at the minute as some apps I use dont work with a rooted phone.
In that case....yes. pretty much all roms are based on the wwe software
Hi All
Let me start with few good things here You guys are amazing helping and providing tweaks for us:good:
I am Nexus user. I have Installed Custom Recovery, Flashed ROMs and rooted my Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. This is my First Samsung Tablet. I have waited enough for Nexus 10 (2). I finally bought SM-P600.
I was trying to find an Guide with links for Unlocking bootloader and Updating firmware and then flash Custom recovery for this but coudnt figure it out
I have been reading lots of things about Knox and counters related to it.
Can anyone Please help me find answers straight.
1) Any Rooting and Custom Recovery tools or ADB commands without Hitting the KNOX counter {Just In case IF I wanted to return it} If not then which one you recommend ?
By the Way I found few posts related to Rooting Which has confused me more. I used to use Chainfire SUROOT:
Rooting using CF-AUTO Root
Universal Root de la Vega
2) If I Root and want to use Stock ROM of SM-P600 will all apps work normally or any known issues with it ?
3) Is Odin any tool which everyone is taking about ? I am not sure about it Can you provide any links to its dev for more info. Found it about in a Post to return to STOCK ?
4) Are these ROMS and apps Odexed or Deodexed ROM?
5) Any Dependencies for Firmware and with any of the above questions. I mean In Universal Root I saw they were talking about certain version of firmware. Also Should I update the latest firmware and do a Nandriod backup ?
6) Also read that once KNOX counter goes up, I wont get any OTA ? My Plan is I will use it till next Nexus and will give it to parents with stock ROM. If I am using I can always use an Custom Rom and get updates. But for parents I want to return it to stock so that they can easily update when OTA is available.
I would like to make one more suggestion to MOD's Please Pin the Guides like the Rooting and stuff like Return to Stock which are quite common and useful so that its easy for newbies( aka for Samsung) like me.
Thanks
Zaib.
1. This is not really a single question with a single answer I think vaguely what you are asking is if you can root without tripping knox?
Nope. Not at this time.
2. If you use CF-Auto-Root you'll likely find that the vast majority of applications keep working without issue. Of those that don't, a handful you can manage back to a working state with various tweaks, but there are a few that are probably gone for good. You can basically kiss all the Samsung hub apps goodbye, these will start claiming they are not supported in your country even if they were working perfectly prior to rooting, some may continue working for a short time after but eventually something leaks and your access is cut. Screen mirroring will no longer work though this can be fixed with a small zip file flash. OTA updates are also gone.
Forget all the talk about 'triangle away' fixing any of this, it hasn't for me.
3. Odin is a tool that is able to flash firmware files or parts thereof to your device. Heimdall is an alternative suite of applications, while there is a GUI for it, it seems fairly hit and miss on Linux these days, I've never had much luck with it, on the other hand the command line tools work perfectly fine.
Once you trip Knox, there's no turning back! You won't lose your warranty in any meaningful way, but you may end up having to argue about it and drag in government regulators to get your tablet repaired free of charge depending on the dealer response.
4. I don't think this is particularly relevant to the SM-P600. My subjective opinion would be to stick with the bog standard Samsung ROM. If you want cool themes there are a multitude of launchers, Xposed takes care most other things you might ever care to tweak.
5. You have one choice. CF-Auto-Root. Backups are healthy.
6. True, but you'll still be able to flash via Odin so it doesn't really mean much of anything. Once you trip Knox, you can also kiss OTA updates goodbye as well.

How are you flashing TWRP, through recovery or Odin?
Hi everybody... I have purchased Xperia Z1 Compact few day ago and this is my first ever experience with any SONY SMARTPHONE device in this Android era. Before this I had Galaxy SIII and I learnt how to Root, Flash, Custom OS, and Reseting Counter on my own through different sources youtube videos. But regarding my sony xperia z1 compact device, I have been searching for the last 3 consecutive days on how to ROOT and get CWM on my device but all i get in return is total crap. I know about the official Sony Way of Unblocking the bootloader but then again I dont want SONY to know that I tinkered around with their device in the form of Unblocking and/or Rooting. There is 1 website which demonstrate how to UNLOCK BOOTLOADER in 2 different ways. 1- Official. 2-Unofficial. The unofficial way is very easy through FLASHTOOL but my device is running 4.4.2 kitkat and yesterday I upgraded to even more latest 4.4.2 build number 14.3.A.0.757. I think flashtool is not yet compatible with the 4.4.2 line for UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER in UNOFFICIAL WAY. When i recieved my device it was running on Android 4.3. So please kindly tell me how I can UNLOCK the BOOTLOADER in unofficial way and also root the device. I dont want any suggestions regarding OFFICIAL WAY UNLOCKING.
Oh yes one more thing. If i want my regional dedicated Android FTF file, from where I can get one. My location is SAUDI ARABIA.
Samsung phones have the best solution for providing regional dedicated OS files through samfirm ware, but about sony I have no clue.
Kindly help..... Thanks to all in advance. Waiting eagerly. I want to restore my apps and data which run on ROOTED device.
Regards.:good:

I was just wondering why you didn't want Sony to know that you unlocked your bootloader? If it's a warranty concern then when you send it back just relock the bootloader. I did that with my XPERIA Z when I needed to get it repaired and there was no problems at all.
You mentioned you want to restore your apps that need to run on rooted devices... You only need to unlock the bootloader IF you want to use a custom kernel. For example if you want to use DoomLords kernel then you need to have your bootloader unlocked or if you want to flash CyanogenMod ROM to your phone you need to unlock your bootloader (because it flashes a custom kernel to your phone as well)
If you ONLY want to use apps that need root then I suggest you follow this guide which has worked for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2634196
About region FTF's, the ONLY difference as far as I know are the apps that come bundled with it. I've flashed many FTF's from many countries and the only difference between them is the bundled apps.

Oh really? and how will I relock the bootloader then as I dont know the whole process..... and you mean I just need the ROOT access for my apps and not the UNLOCKING OF THE BOOTLOADER in order for the ROOT ACCESS to work... But many websites and tutorials were saying that you must first have to UNLOCK the BOOTLOADER.... and also how can I be so sure that different region TFT will work on my phone. I once saw RUSSIAN 4.1.2 on GALAXY S3 in my friend's phone and it was working fine except we didn't know RUSSIAN LANGUAGE.
So can you please guide me all the way on ROOTING and then also RELOCKING the BOOTLOADER.
Many thanks.

What are these files? Do I have to download all of them? I mean these are 2 different TFT files? What's the scope of having two?
There is no mentioning what should I have to do? What key combination do I have to make and which mode do I have to enter for FLASHING like FASTBOOT mode or FLASHING MODE?
No nothing blatantly explained. Not Noob Friendly. If you can guide me through these mysterious Steps. It'll be helpful...
And also do tell what version will this TFT be? 4.3 or 4.2.2 or what? is it compatible with Xperia Z1 Compact????

Yeah you JUST need root access, there is no need to unlock the bootloader for root access. You definitely do not need to unlock the bootloader. I don't want to unlock the bootloader because on my old XPERIA device when I unlocked the bootloader I lost BRAVIA engine.
Yeah, the default language might be different but when you start your XPERIA for the first time it will ask you what language you want. From this menu you can pick English, Arabic etc...
If you don't want to flash custom ROMs then you don't need to unlock the bootloader. If you just need root access then just follow this article (It'll teach you EVERYTHING you need to know):

I was going along the step by step procedure, everything was smooth but when I reached STEP 14 things gone strange. Now the cmd prompt option 3 was taking time and i closed the command prompt. Now i have tried 2 times more the same step but nothing happening except the same blinking cursor without any notification/message. I tried going to FLASHMODE but FLASHTOOL is accepting it as USB DEBUGGING DEVICE (NON FLASHMODE).... What should I do now?

My wife has a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 M-919 that we have been using on AT&T for quite a while now. It has some bugs and I want to reinstall it for her to get a clean start.
I'm experienced with firmware, recoveries, etc. I thought we would try to debloat the phone while we were at it. She, however, does NOT want to have anything to do with rooting her phone and she actually likes TouchWIz, but she'd like to debloat the carrier apps/annoying boot graphics if possible.
I know it is possible to flash roms for the i9505 onto this phone, but I've never really dealt with KNOX, for one thing. Is it possible to flash the generic global firmware (or something similar) onto this phone without "messing it up" in her eyes (via Heimdall or Odin or something)? Even if I can root it (or worse) and put it back to "stock" after that would probably work. It is over a year old and out of any warranty as far as I know. Thanks guys.
There is no way. You have 2 options
1) manually disable the apps on application manager
2) root, remove whatever you want, then unroot
as per he title "Are All Samsung Devices "Bootloader Unlockable""?... I know (i think) that samsung devices dont really have a bootloader in the sense that htc and motorola devices do, but this is my first samsung device so im trying to understand how it works based on terms im familiar with.
so in the sense that htc/motorla needs to have an unlocked bootloader to flash custom images, are all samsung devices "unlocked" once you flash with cf-autoroot? from my understamding, cf works on all samsung devices, right? In addition to that, is cf-autorooting necessary if one is goin to flash custom recovery anyway?

AutoRoot is not required for a custom recovery
If the device is unlocked, a custom recovery can be flashed through Odin prior rooting the device. I unfortunately can not help you on whether or not all devices are shipped with unlocked bootloaders. I know the T-Mobile and Wifi variants are.

Thanks, but unfortunately i still dont understand. I flashed cf-autoroot and then flashed custom recovery, but your saying that my device may still be locked? So if i flash stock kitkat firmware via odin and then take the lollipop ota when it comes then there is a chamce i wont be able flash custom recovery again?

That is not what I am stating. If you were able to obtain a custom recovery - your bootloader is unlocked.
You are rooted and modified though, you are no longer able to recieve OTA updates. The only way to flash the update now would be through Odin, or returning your device back to factory specs. As of yet, they did not lock the bootloader with the 5.1.1 update. You will be able to root and obtain custom recovery again with 5.1.1 as you did with Kit Kat. The difference is, lollipop requires a custom non SE enforcing kernel usually.

Thank you! Everything makes more sense now that i know my device was unlocked.. i am so used to locked down devices i assumed that mine was and so i got confused. one last thing , is the download mode screen on samsung devices equivelamt to the bootloader screen on a moto device?
No! Not all Samsung's are unlockable! P605v is not. Any Verizon Samsung and/or AT&T phones are not unlockable

Thank you, I am pretty sure I understand the format now. The thing that was throwing me off the most was CF-Autoroot which for some reason I was thinking performed a bootloader unlock. Idk why because I know the difference between root and unlock. I think i was thrown off by one of the posts I read on the autoroot thread.
One final thing I am trying to clear up as per my last post "is the download mode screen on samsung devices equivelamt to the bootloader screen on a moto device? "
I don't know. I have never owned a moto device.

for anyone else reading this, according to king root's website "Download Mode is essentially the same as Bootloader Mode."
