Restoring to factory default - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been an Android user since July of 2010 when I got my Nexus One. Since then I have always wanted to play around with things that require rooting, custom ROMs, etc.
The problem is I've always been worried about voiding my warranty and insurance.
I'm curious how hard it really is to restore to the factory defaults(the way it came out of the box). Relock the bootloader, unroot, restore factory ROM, remove custom recovery, etc. Most importantly is there more than one method to get back to 100% factory default? Can factory reset be done without the "volume down + power" button combo, without hooking up to computer, etc?
I'd just hate to do anything that would void my warranty/insurance and then need to use the warranty/insurance for something that makes it impossible to return to factory default. For example, a faulty volume button or faulty USB port that causes a computer to not recognize it.

it's as simple as flashing factory images from Google then relocking the bootloader with fastboot

"reformat" "reinstall" HTC Desire + +

Is there a way to reinstall my android system if for example android crash and wont boot?
Are you using a custom rom?
Are you rooted?
You can always do a nandroid backup (backup of complete system) via clockwork.
I think you mean a factory reset. Hold the volume down key while powering up the phone and you can select that option from the boot loader.
Yes but i mean, if factory reset wont even work. and it only reboots every 30 sec.
Like the system is really ****ed. and the only way is to reinstall android.
this happened because i satt down installing apps and games for hours and then did a restart just to completely refresh the system. and there it hangs in the boot and just keeps restarting and restarting 4 ever.
And i haven't made any backup to restore from.
I do not use any custom rom
And yes i am rooted. i have clockwork mod installed.
i used the lastest unrevoked. but i dont think nand is unlocked.
is the solution maybe to find the right update.zip and use that method to reinstall android via recovery? since i can mount USB mass storage to the PC via recovery?
You can do a complete reset. Go into your recovery. Vol down and power then select recovery. Once booted, do a factory reset and wipe the Dalvik cache. Then you can flash the rom again and start from fresh.
If that doesn't work, you can get a WWE RUU and run it. It will wipe everything so you will need to root again but it will give you back control of your phone. Just to let you know, if you do use an RUU you might need to create a Goldcard.
Sweet!!! Thanks GoogleJelly!!
Did the complete reset with success Even though i recall doing something like this in recovery. Ohwell just did exactly what you said and my Desire works like a dream again
At least now i know what people mean with "playing around with random apps is dangerous"
This is something that i've been searching around the web for. But keep finding this: There is nothing that you can do. Take it back to the store and send it to repair.
Though i would send it to repair if it weren't for GoogleJelly =)

Returning the phone after flashing ROMs etc

So my phone has developed a problem with the touchscreen shortly after I first flashed a custom ROM.
The phone will work fine for about 20 seconds, then it starts glitching up, things open and close as if I've tapped buttons even though I haven't and it doesn't respond when I do tap buttons and icons.
If you've ever tried to use the touchscreen outside when rain has got on the screen, the effect is similar to that. Also the power button often doesn't respond, and I have to press it 2 or 3 times to get the phone to come on or go off.
I'm inclined to think it's not a problem that was caused by the ROMs, firstly because it happens even when I'm at the bootloader screen or in CWM, and also because before I flashed any ROM, the power button had started to become unresponsive although the touchscreen never glitched up like this.
So unless there's some fix that someone knows about (I've tried clearing cache & restoring to factory settings, made no difference), I'm thinking I'm going to have to return the phone to HTC.
I'm worried about this because I've put custom ROMs on - are HTC going to say I've voided my warranty? How can I restore the phone to its original state - ie remove CWM, re-lock the bootloader?
If anyone has returned their WFS after installing ROMs (or tried to!) I'd be really glad to hear whether HTC did the right thing and honoured the warranty or not.
Thanks!
You just Re-Flash the STOCK ROM and Re-Lock the boot Loader. That's enough!!!
You can sent it to HTC. Surely they will do it....(You have this option only now as I know)
If you have Nandroid Backup, can restore the Stock Rom.

Thanks buddy.
Before I installed any ROMs, I made a backup with CWM, is that the same as a nandroid backup?

[Q] Weird bootloop

NOTE: This device is not mine, it belongs to my girlfriend and I am the one troubleshooting for her.
here goes:
Yesterday, while a friend of my girlfriend's was playing with her Galaxy Nexus (my GF's), it suddenly rebooted itself without warning.
From what I understand, Nexus bootloops that are caused by faulty flashing usually loops at the "Google" logo (correct me if I'm wrong). Her's is a different story, her Galaxy Nexus is pure stock, locked bootloader, un-rooted and definitely nothing custom on in; literally pure stock. Instead of looping at the "Google" logo, her GNexus loops at the "X" logo, my assumption is that there is something, maybe a rogue app, that is causing her device to bootloop upon reaching startup phase.
I know this isn't a software/ROM level issue since we were able to get to her lockscreen a few times and then the phone reboots after a few seconds. I've tried wiping cache but didn't work, and she won't let me try wipe data/factory reset because she has a lot of important files on her phone. So odin flashing and wipe data/factory reset is out of the question.
so here are some details that might be of interest:
1.) Her phone is not rooted and is pure stock android 4.1.2
2.) does not have custom recovery
3.) does not have usb debugging enabled (not sure, but I assume it's not enabled)
4.) can still boot to fastboot/recovery/download mode
5.) reboots at the X logo
So the basic troubleshooting methods are out, now I'm thinking of using adb pull to extract files from her phone via adb, but problem is, usb debugging is off! Is there any way of recovering her files at least without booting to the ROM itself so I can flash another version of android on it (via odin)?
I've also read about "safe mode" that boots the device without starting up 3rd party apps, only the core essentials. I'd like to go down that route if possible, but we've tried most of the guides on how to boot into safe mode but to no avail. There was one time though that the device booted up and she managed to: open power menu > hold power off > reboot to safe mode, but nothing happened, it just rebooted only to get stuck at the X again.
I may be overthinking this, so I've turned to XDA for help. I know you guys don't like people asking n00bish queries but I've exhausted everything I can think of and I'd like to try everything before I go down the route where I can possibly do even more damage.
I really need help with this, anyone have any ideas? We'd really appreciate it!
Unlock, flash custom recovery, wipe system, data, cache, dalvik cache and flash 4.3 factory image. Problem solved.

[Q] [VK810] Settings Crashes

Today, I decided to delete bloatware that came with the tablet that I thought was unnecessary. After doing this, the tablet's settings app would crash. So, I decided to do a factory reset from lg's stock recovery. Doing this, caused the tablet to boot and then keep saying settings has crashed allowing me to go nowhere (Not even to the launcher). So, I am stuck with a tablet that is unrooted, has no recovery, and also isn't recognized by LG's support tool. Is there anything I can do? Thanks.
Put it in download mode (I believe with the tablet off, hold the up volume button then press and hold both it and the power button), download the 24A KDZ I have a thread here for, and flash it with the unofficial LG Tool 2014, then re-root with Stump (it may be myth but I've had better luck with Stump with USB Debugging turned on, then reboot first), then follow the special instructions to get TWRP installed. Always do a nandroid backup before debloating, and factory reset never puts things back in system that you took out, just erases data (settings and apps), cache and Dalvik.

Flashed Firmware S-ON

After an entirely random error saying my phone is somehow Encrypted, I went ahead and did a factory reset which didn't help. The phone was still booting into the same screen asking me for a code to Decrypt the data. So after some "quick" reading on these forums I've decided to RUU to stock. But the file I've chosen, even though it matched my version it was a Firmware, while the phone was S-ON. The device had never been Rooted or tampered with previously.
So now the phone does not boot at all. I've tried every button combination, but nothing seems to work. If I plug in the phone to charge the orange light flashes, endlessly. Even after I've left the device to charge for 6hours, the orange light still flashes.
When I plug in the phone to my PC, all I get it seems is this new device: QHSUSB_BULK, which shows with an exclamation mark next to it. I've read similar threads for different phones where they've unbricked devices while they were in this mode, is that even possible? I can hear Windows recognizing a device was plugged in, and if I press Power+VolumeUP, it will disconnect the phone and reconnect it, at least based on the sounds Windows is playing. The screen is Black at all times.
How badly have I bricked this device and is there any hope to revive it? Thanks to everyone who chimes in on this.

Most likely it's a soft break. So you can fix it. First of all get yourself a working usb cable. Your's maybe broken.
Your phone's data partition had been encrypted. It never boots up completely without lux password. You could've format the data partition with a custom recovery such as TWRP. Instead you tried the reflash firmware but obviously it didn't finish and failed. All you need is reflash again but doing it correct way so it can finish. Your old data is gone atm. You will have factory reset phone at the end. Before giving you any instructions, you need to answer a few questions so anyone can help.
Have you ever updated your phone to marshmallow which is android 6? If no: You can recover it with voidzero's wonderful answer titled back to stock. Follow that exactly. If yes you can't flash old versions since they are using different bootloaders. Also you will have to reflash it manually. It's long and difficult for anyone who is new. If you don't know if it was updated. Just boot into bootloader then Fastboot mode, connect usb. Then use htc's Fastboot. Run htc_fastboot getvar all command. Paste output here.
Thanks for replying, risyasin.
Yes, I did update to Android 6. The problem is I'm not able to boot into the bootloader using the Power+VolumeUP keys, or any other combination.
Instead of flashing the RUU, or maybe turning to S-OFF(I still don't know if this would've made a difference), I flashed a firmware, one that matched my version. This is the exact filename: 0PKVIM[email protected]60201_20.05_018_F_release_479349_combined_signed
I've renamed it to 0PKVIMG.zip and booted using the Power+VolumeUP keys. For whatever reason, everything went OK, no errors whatsoever. In the end it told me to press Power to reboot the phone. I've pressed Power and nothing happened since.
If anyone can help me figure this out, I'd be forever grateful.

That is a big problem. I assume you never tried to go S-OFF (which is dangereous). While phone was S-ON. You could always boot into bootloader. That's one of the purpose of staying S-ON.
Combination is Power + Volume down. But if your phone is up & somehow can not continue to boot. eg: stuck at reading system or kernel etc. You can do a hard reset which is pressing Volume up + volume down + power for at least 15 seconds. phone will shut down. then you can try bootlader combination. Make sure it's has power on with light at screen edges you must look at carefully. After trying this if you still can not see bootloader. That's a problem beyond my experiences, so I don't have any idea to fix it.
I have never tried the firmware you have used. Maybe that firmware is not usable, broken or even dangerous.
We need to confirm that here. if anyone else tried and brick their phone with that.
