Vrz htc one m8 - software status modified?
Let me start by apologizing in advance, I have NO idea if this is the right place to post this so if it isn't I'm genuinely sorry! I have no idea what I'm doing to be honest.
All I know is I have a Verizon HTC One M8 that I'm still paying for and want to sell so I can pay it off and cancel the second line on my account and it says Software Status - Modified. I don't know if this means the phone was, or is, rooted - I was under the impression that for some reason you couldn't root Vrz. phones but like I said - no idea what I'm talking about.
I just want to get the phone back to stock as fast and easy as possible so that I can hopefully get rid of it. If anyone could please help me out or point me in the right direction it would be so appreciated.
Again, I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place or if my lack of knowledge is annoying - I just want to get rid of this phone!! Thank you!
Does it say s-on or s-off in bootloader

The Verizon version M8 does not support unlocking the bootloader by "official" means using HTCDev.com. But folks have been able to root using Kingroot, than s-off using sunshine and then "unofficially" unlock the bootloader.
Software status modified may be a result of Kingroot. But it sounds like you bought the phone new and never tried to root?

I bought the phone new BUT I bought it for my ex so I have no idea what he did with it. But chances are he tried to (or did) root the phone.. Is there anything I can do? Any easy solution since I have no idea what any of these things mean, ha!

On the Verizon version, I'm not sure there is an easy way to remove the "modified" flag. In other words, I think you might need root or some other things like custom recovery, unlocked bootloader, or even s-off.
If you don't want to invest the time and effort, you might just want to sell the phone "as-is" and fully disclose the "software modified" status the potential buyers.

I have no problem investing time or effort, I'd much rather the phone be back to normal so I can hopefully get enough money for it to pay it off. Like I said, only problem is most of this stuff is like reading another language to me. I genuinely know nothing about androids.. I'm pretty computer/iphone savvy but that's kind of the extent of it.

That is correct, RUU will completely re-image the phone to stock.
Thanks for the link. Wow, how did I not know those existing for so long? While I'm not a Verizon owner I'm pretty aware of the RUUs for various versions. I was only aware of the "hacked" RUU here (which requires s-off since its not official): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2727831
RighteousB, the link in the previous post is what you want. Just download the latest RUU, and follow in the instructions in that thread to easily return to full stock.
But in the interest of full disclosure, I recommend you still inform potential buyers the phone was modified at some point, as it has various implications.

I've come across many posts stating that the bootloader in the Note 4 AT&T variant may be locked. Is there a way to put in a unlocked bootloader in case one wants to proceed towards rooting the device? I know Lollipop is expected to be a new day in age for the Android Community, but I'm sure the XDA community would still be able to work something out.
No, that is not currently possible. Phone is neither able to be bootloader unlocked nor rooted at this time.
Yikes, will it be able to be bootloader unlocked or rooted in the near future?

People are working on it, but no guarantees. It is very possible that root may be found, but not a bootloader unlock.
Although it is also possible neither are achieved.
No one knows.
The moral of the story is that if you 'need' root, you should never buy a phone until AFTER it is rooted... Root is NOT guaranteed on new Samsung phones anymore - getting very locked down.

They have root and twrp custom recovery because they aren't locked down like Verizon and Att are.
Silly question, but doesn't this have a negative impact on the AT&T variant Note 4's resale value?

Not really. 99% of people don't give a crap (or even know about) root or locked bootloaders.
I have seen a lot of threads about this phone, but a lot of them are for carrier versions that are hacked. I have a htc one m8 GPE, and I rooted it due to lack of patients. I want to know how to unroot it and go back to stock android, I have been working on this for days with little luck, Can someone please link me to a thread on how to flash my phone back to stock?? You don't use the recovery to flash the RUU. Follow the instructions on the RUU thread.
If you have never fastboot anything your probably crying in a corner sucking your thumb right now ...dont be scared !! Its easier than it looks , anybody with a brain who can read can do it , good luck ?

I did read what was said and did what I was told, please dont get mad. I am just trying to understand. It loads the wile then you have to reboot and it does nothing.
What's all the invalid version info about? Nonetheless, I can't say I have seen a HBoot look like that before without the other settings. Usually they are there. I am thinking it's corrupt.

The requirements in the beginning of the thread says that you need to have an unlocked bootloader and S-Off. You can't change to the Google Play Edition with S-On.

Hi guys new to this forum so go gentle!
Recently purchased a htc one m8 on 3 network. It was cheap as it stated the phone was rooted. I am wanting to go back to stock firmware but want to know first if the device is actually rooted, how do i go about finding it out?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
There are apps that can check for root, or just load an app that requires root like Titanium Backup, and see if it works or not (if the phone isn't rooted, Titanium will tell you right away when you open the app).
More importantly, on the bootloader screen does it say bootloader LOCKED, UNLOCKED or RELOCKED; and does it say s-off or s-on?
Also, if you boot into recovery from bootloader, does it boot into TWRP or stock recovery?

Being your first post, I would kindly recommend making thread titles that describe your specific question/issue, in order to keep the forum better organized, and possibly attract the right users to the thread. Literally, everyone posting on this forum section has an M8 and looking for help. So your current thread title "Htc one m8 help" is somewhat useless.

When he asked "does it say..." and quoting your previous post, that refers to "on bootloader screen".
And your first question is how to know whether it is rooted, download "root check" or something similar on play store and run it. It will tell the current status.

I received the notification to upgrade to 7.0 this morning and as I was downloading I was notified I did not have enough space. After making space on my phone the notification does no show nor do I get the suggestions in the "System Updates". Whenever I try to update it tells me "Your device's software is up to date." even though it is still running 6.0. What do I do, I've tried a hard reset.

What are you trying to do? All you need to do is flash only the 10 sparsechunks, OEM and boot.img
Hello XDA! First post here and I’ve been reading a lot since I got my phone. I seem to have found a solution, (maybe), but I'm not clear on a few vital things.
A little back story… my dad just gave me his Verizon Note 4. It was on Marshmallow, but has since been downgraded to Lollipop 5.1.1, N910VVRU2BPA1. From what I understand it still has the locked MM bootloader (?).
I’m planning to root the phone, but only if I can further downgrade it to Kitkat 4.4.4. I’ve read through the thread “Stabilized process used to unlock Bootloader” and it seems it should unlock the bootloader. However, I’ll end up with a “Developer Edition” phone. This leads to my questions…
1) Once successfully rooted and the bootloader is unlocked, will I be able to downgrade the phone to Kitkat by just flashing the firmware in Odin? I really don’t care if I lose root, I just want Kitkat on the phone.
2) Can I just flash the “retail” version of Kitkat from Sammobile or do I need a “developer edition” Kitkat (if there even is one)?
3) Can someone advise me if what I imagine might be possible is even doable?
Any help is greatly appreciated! I’m new to this so if these are just funky questions, please excuse. Lots to learn! Thanks so much!!!
A little help please!
Someone must know this.
Can I or can't I flash the "retail" Kitkat firmware onto a "supposed" Dev Edition rooted to unlock the bootloader?
I hope someone can clarify this before I do something stupid!
Thanks!

Yes you can, make sure to unlock bootloader first. But when you flash you will loose bootloader unlock. I have a guide where I could use the lollipop bootloader and use kitkat. I really love kitkat and with root you have lots of potential for battery savings and more!
---------- Post added at 08:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:32 PM ----------
If you would like to downgrade the bootloader add a twrp custom recovery and use the kitkst method I have and you can have the best phone, I also would recommend you buying a zerolemon battery and case.
But if you do just want to have full stock and have all the bloat ware on it you can like you stated unlock the bootloader and then flash the retail kitkat and your all set and downgraded

Thank you very much for responding! I very much appreciate it!
I don't care to keep root and just want the phone on Kitkat. In the future I may decide to root it and play around with roms and such, but not right now. I can now go ahead and attempt it with confidence. I'll let you know how it goes!
Thanks again! :good:
Well, tried all kinds of stuff and it was a no go.
Was able to get the phone rooted finally... had to use KingOroot. Kingroot failed to work no matter how many versions I tried. Once rooted, checked download mode and it indicated Developer. However, I was unable to install retail KK or KK stock restore in Odin 3.10 and 3.09. Since the flash failed, putting it into recovery ended up in an error about "Software update failed"... use a PC, blah, blah, blah. Wouldn't let me go anywhere in recovery.
Decided to try flashing LP 5.1.1 back to the phone and it flashed ok in Odin 3.09. Phone is back up, but lost root, (expected), and I'm back again at square 1. At least the phone isn't bricked! LOL!
Maybe the problem is that this phone has an MM bootloader so eventhough it's unlocked, you can't flash KK to it? Don't know, but I guess I'm back to trying to find this out.
Good experience so far eventhough this attempt didn't get me anywhere! Well... at least I know how to root it and unlock the bootloader!
