Is there a way to backup a single app on the Fire TV. Any way to pull it from the box via adb or something as an APK?
I'd really like to make a backup of my Hulu Plus app before updating. Because I am outside US, I always fear that updates can cause hassle with the geo-checking. In this case I could revert to my "old" backuped APK..
Geo IP checking is done on server side not within the app, so a backup wouldn´t help. That´s why many people are using VPNs.
There are some possibilities to backup an APK:
1.) use another app which can backup APKs for e.g. ES FileExplorer, Astro File Manager etc.
2.) Pulling it via ADB command: "adb pull <path_to_your_APK>"

Hey everyone,
I've spend about 3 hours researching these forums and tinkering tonight and I'm at wits end. Help would be appreciated. I am trying to get all of my phone's apps onto the KF.
Here is what happened...
Preface) I used KFU 0.95 to root my phone and install Google services. I synched my Google account
A) 6.3.1 update unrooted my phone. I used KF Utility to restore root.
B) Several apps in my Google Play Store are coming up as "incompatible with this device" (were doing this before step A as well), but I want to install them on the KF.
C) I used by Android Phone and Titanium Backup Pro to sync my backups to Google Drive (which takes a long time, btw).
D) I opened Google Drive on the KF and selected files that end in .apk.gz (which is the actual app, right) one at a time - can more be selected at once?
E) Astro File Manager opens to my system/app folder, but when I go to put it in there, it says "no file selected" - so nothing gets installed on the KF.
F) It's late and I'm not sure how else to go about getting these apps to the KF.
Thanks in advance!

Download the backups from drive, and download titanium on your fire. Move the ti backups to the titanium backup>backups folder. And run restore from titanium

OK, Thanks. I have TiBu on my Fire, but when I double click on the file in Google Drive to download it, Astro File Manager comes up. When it takes me to a destination folder directly after that, and I hit "OK", AFM says "no file selected"...why would it do that?
Also, when I do my backup, it gives my a lot of files, some ending in .tar.gz, .properties, and of course the apk.gz - is this normal? Should I only try to DL the apk.gz?

I recently did a backup using TiBu from MoDaCo to an ICS ROM. There should likely be 3 files per app you are backing up (I did Dead Space). The 3 files should end with: .apk.gz, tar.gz, and .properties. I downloaded all 3. I then went into TiBu and went into Batch from the menu. Under batch, I verified the backups and then restored. Hope that helps a bit.
How did you dl them, what program/app did you use?

The full (paid) version of TiBu lets you integrate with Box/Dropbox/Google Drive, so you could use one of those. In my case, I actually just connected the KF to my PC and copied the files over and then back once I had changed ROMs. Either will work, but the files need to end up at least in the Titanium Backups folder when you're ready to restore (I think, there may be a way to change backup locations in TiBu settings, I just haven't messed with it).
I have the paid version. I'm still trying how to get this stuff from Google Drive and onto the Kindle. What folders did you use to move the files? Do you have to move all three or just the .apk?
You have to move all 3 files for TB to load them up for restore. Sdcard/titaniumbackup/files go here

So, I just need to run a "batch", "restore" and they will be functioning?
Assuming they show up you can batch restore, or restore app or app+ data per app from the bottom of the list in the backup restore tab.
Restoring apps + data across different roms is not generally a good idea, I usually do app only. Certain apps I do data restore, and I'm always watching for issues caused by it.

Is this the easiest way to get the apps that are listed as "incompatible with this device" added to a rooted 6.3.1 KF? It seems really complicated and time consuming.

For that you can side load an apk file and run it from any file manager, it'll install aside from any app specific problems. Side load is basically sourcing the app apk you want, plopping it somewhere on the device then installing it. I'll leave how to get those apps up to you and google.
Should keep in mind, it says incompatible for a reason, it may just not work on any given rom/device.

I was wondering if it is possible to Copy over my flash drive from one FireTV to another one. I am buying 2 more for my house, have my first one set up perfectly with all the side loaded apps, XBMC and all of its settings. For XBMC I do have XBMC Backup - it doesn't remember a few things when I use the backup but it gets it mostly right. But loading all of this took me 1-2 hours.
Just wondering if there is an easier way to get my setup onto the other 2 new boxes.
Might be possible to do what you're trying to do with Titanium Backup, I know it runs on the FTV but I haven't used it for backing anything up yet.

1.) Download and sideload SSH Daemon http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/?id=web.oss.sshsftpDaemon on your configured amazon fire tv box
2.) run ftp client and connect to fire tv, using IP
3.) navigate in the android folder and copy the xbmc folder (SPMC com.semperpax.spmc, XBMC org.xbmc.xbmc) to your computer
4.) sideload SSH daemon on the new fire tv, install the same xbmc or spmc version that is one your first amazon fire tv
5.) use ftp client to connect to the new fire tv box and copy the folder from step 3 into the android folder of the new box.

He wants to backup everything, that could be slow as hell to do over again for every app he has. There are also much easier ways to backup XBMC settings. Titanium Backup should be able to let him backup/restore all his apps and their respective settings at one time.

Thank you! I will try Titanium Backup and let you know how it goes. Thanks for responding!
Hi - did you manage to do this with titanium?
I'm looking at doing this myself also. I've got one FTV set up exactly how did like it and want to copy apk's and all xbmc settings in one.
Hi guys,
I'm in the US and I'm trying to get both UK and US TV apps running on my shield. Iplayer and ITV hub are giving me trouble as they are system apps which are disabled when the shield detects I'm not in the the UK. I'm running a VPN/DNS on my merlin router to get the UK ip address. The general plan is:
1- Log onto the VPN, so the shield thinks I'm in the UK, and shows iplayer/ITV hub
2- Backup iplayer/ITV apk's to a data stick using x-plore
3 - On my PC, decompile the apk's using apktool and rename the packages
4 - Side load iplayer/ITV with a different name so it won't hide them when the region changes.
5 - Switch to smart DNS on the router. The shield will go to back the USA default, but hopefully the SmartDNS will route iplayer traffic through the UK
6. - Install HBO and all the other USA stuff, and done.
I'm stuck on step 2 as x-plore only shows installed apk's, and not system apks, like iplayer. Does anyone have any ideas on how back them up? Do I need to root the shield to get at them? I'd rather not root because I have read that All4 (normal android version) will not run on a rooted shield. I would prefer to use this method as I can only find older versions of iplayer on mirror sites and I'm not even sure they are for android boxes.
Thanks for any help

To alter/uninstall/backup apps that are installed as system apps you need root.
And for backup while rooted I would suggest using Titanium backup.
You can also use an app like App Cloner to clone the app with a different name.

You can yes
Use total commander apk to backup system apks
have you tried kodi with the iplayer addon
Ok so I have a lot of exp with this, if you want to use BBC iPlayer and itvhub in the USA (maybe without VPN) you can use the Kodi add-ons - which are better as they have no adverts at all! If not you can sideload the regular Android version and it will work fine probably with VPN. All4 I did not manage to get to work with root but apparently using magisk if you use the option of "changing package manager to random package name" (it's named something like this in settings) then it will work.
Hi all,
So I thought I was being smart and tried to install the fireos app store to try skygo on my fire stick 4k.. also stupidly installed on my fire tv (the old box one) as I was using apps2fire and had the wrong ip set!
The problem I've got now is I can't open any apps or the app menu. And to make it worse the app store I installed doesn't work either!!
Could anyone extract the FireTV version so I can reinstall it properly?
If that doesn't work, does anyone know how I can restore without having to reinstall and setup all my apps?
Cheers
Ok after a lot of troubleshooting I've managed to solve this.
For anyone who might ever manage to end up making the same stupid mistake.. I installed ES file explorer on my phone, pushed it to the fire stick (Amazon appstore version wouldn't open with busted app store). Navigate to system apps and find com.amazon.venezia, that's the appstore. Delete it!
Once I removed it, it was magically replaced with the normal one and all is good.
Hello can I somehow save the Amazon Fire TV Launcher setting.
so that I can use it on another Firetv Stick as well.
Or is there a way to clone the entire FireTV (including all apps),
so that in the house all FireTV Stick 4k Max all look the same?

The only way I can think of is the initial setup on the setup wizard. Usually Fire TV's give you an option to show your backup settings and restore them with the apps you've installed and settings you've enabled and disabled. Excluding 3rd party apps. The last resort would be to factory reset your devices and apply these settings with the backup
In conclusion there's no method of backing up without fully unlocking and rooting the device
Thank you very much.
If I had root access, would a backup then be possible.
What are the alternative ROMs for possibilities and which is the most popular?

Yeah no problem! With root access yes a backup would be possible using the app Titanium Backup. You basically can backup app and data at the same time. Be warned though if you do have any rootable Fire TV devices that if you fully backup TWRP with your data, it'll kick you out of the Amazon launcher and force you to sign back in. There was a post somewhere on here showing users how to backup apps and data like you were questioning but with no luck. Users have tried certain commands (forgot to list any) without root and it seems to not be working in particular.
Edit: I've tried running these backup commands directly from the developer android site where it shows the backup manager commands: https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/data/testingbackup
I tested the backup with this command on adb shell and it shows as given:
adb shell bmgr backupnow com.amazon.tv.launcher
Error: Could not access the Backup Manager. Is the system running?
Ok I found the post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/problem-for-restore-app-on-fire-stick-4k-max.4544731/
Which ROM with root would you recommend then.
Is all this also possible via a Macbook pro?
It is important to me that I have the same settings/apps on all my FireTVs
have the same settings/apps. Without that I have to
have to adjust manually.
