[Q] Just how tough is this phone physically? - Desire 816 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tend to be rough on my mobile devices, generally.
My old LG Optimus V is incredibly tough. It's survived everything I've dealt it from four foot drops to cement (battery flies out) to face-down falls from lap in car on gravel (scratched screen protector) to dunked in my cup of coffee (took apart, dried out, cleaned contacts, it now randomly loses touch with the vfat partition.)
I read the cases thread and Googled for a while but couldn't find a waterproof or otherwise supertough case to fit this toy.
Does anyone care to relate experiences, plus or minus, about drops, dunks, skids, kids, crushing, etc? I'd enjoy hearing about incidents and results.

Yeah , not a lot of cases for this phone so I went with a generic Amazon site hard rubber minimal case, no top or bottom cover but sides lipped up to give the screen some chance in a drop but what I did do is spend more then what I spent on the case and got that German companies glass screen protector. Can't think of the name off the top of my head so I'll just call it"expensive" for now since it cost twice what my case did.
As for drops I drop it all the time and it's fine but not on concrete yet so not a good judge there. I think it would do ok with this case but if it landed screen down I'm pretty sure the screen protector would catch some gravel with that thin lip and crack but that's why I got it. I just got tired of big bulky cases that I used to get on my older phones, 2 and 3 pieces, and finally just said "to hell with it" and went minimal mostly due to this bigger screen but I understand wanting the extra protection.

Thanks, good info. Like to hear it can bounce.
First thing I bought with this device was a tempered glass screen protector.
I found mention in the cases thread that the iphone6+ is a close fit dimensionally, found a $5 hard rubber Duracell case for the iphone6+ (only issue, misplaced power button) that I'm using until I can find (or hopefully print, soon) a waterproof case that actually fits.

Who is running nekkid???

I just pulled off my clearfreak cause I messed up the install and I have 2 more coming from the ebay sale, but I've noticed that even the clearfreak takes a bit away from the "nakedness" . I mean damn this screen is sexy and responsive.
Just wondering if anyone is using their phone on a daily basis without a screen protector, gel skin, or neither. How do you like it? How is it holding up?
**Might give away those two Clearfreak SP** haven't decided yet, but let me know.
I bought mine on release day when the store opened and mine is naked as a jay-bird. My concern is being stupid and throwing it in my pocket with keys or something like that so I ordered the RealClear (or something like that) screen protector. I also think its a little hard to one-hand-hold because its fairly slick so I am going to look for a gel/rubber case soon.
I've been using my Vibrant for 2 weeks now without any sort of protection on it and I have to say that the phone is very durable. I dropped it a couple of times and returned with no scratches. I'm soon to get one of those Mesh cases though, just for the appeal .
Had a Realook but it made the capacitative buttons along the bottom less sensitive. I took it off and am debating on going back to a screen protector. If my screen gets scratched up that bad I will just call Tmobile customer service and tell them I need a new phone because my phone is sucking down batteries in less than 2 hours. Works every time!!!!
I was running naked for a while but then I got one of the gel skins form TMO. Been using it on and off. I love the phone naked but I feel like im living on the edge without a case to protect it.
I tried a wet install one from ebay but it had bubbles and felt tacky...I have a amzer I went to put on twice but cannot get every tiny strand from microfiber off screen...Iget stuck with a few stubborn ones...So I been naked for a few weeks now and 0 scratches but i'm very anal and wash my hands dozens of times and handle it like it's an infant.

Dropped my first phone less than three feet on to a tile floor, on the third day I owned it. Screen looked fine (no cracks) but wouldn't work. Got a replacement, and still running naked. I just can't bring myself to cover this sexy bastard up.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah im loving the nekkid feeling. Im sure I'll decide when I get the other 2 sp's in. Definitely not gonna get rid of the gel skin. Not that its a bad thing, but it does make the phone twice as heavy and twice as thick. I'd just like to think that if I dropped the phone it would give some cushion to avoid a corner drop/crack screen.
I guess it comes down to:
Sexy ass phone thats, super light and has an extremely bright screen VS. protected investment... LOL
Had mine for a few weeks, i started out with the t-mobile gel skin and screen protector but instantly realized after putting it on that it was horrible and blurred the image and ruined the colors of the screen. I do like the gel skin though. It gives the phone slightly more thickness and heft, which i prefer, and i think it makes it more comfortable to use.
for the screen I started using just regular kitchen plastic wrap as a temporary measure, but i actually like it quite a bit. it is super thin and clear so the screen looks just as good as usual and is quite resistant to smearing from your fingers. You can drag your finger across the screen and hardly see anything at all. It also wraps around the sides of the phone and keeps little bits of crude from getting in between the chrome-ish bezel and screen. the biggest problem with it is that it just isn't very strong, which leads to replacing it every 2-3 days because of all the little nicks and scratches it picks up. you also need the gel skin in order to hold it on and and keep it from moving.
Android Streaking (Naked)
I ran my G1 Naked for the last year and a half using the "sleeve" that it came with without any issues, scratches, etc so I figured I'd do the same with the Vibrant.
I found a nice semi thick cloth sleeve case with a drawstring so it doesn't fall out when dropped and as a bonus it helps keep the screen clean of fingerprints, debris etc. I have dropped it onto tile from waist height 10 or so times and the case dampens the falls enough so far. I just hope I don't slip when it's not in the sleeve.
Streaking here since i bought it on friday it was released.
I've never had a condom for any of my phones. it's like covering up your Ferrari with a car bra. What's the point?
As we say in the car world, "She ain't a trailer queen, she's built for driving. Drive her."
Exactly!
I was running nekkiddd for a week.
Just bought the clearfreak and after 3 days with it I hate it!
Returning my phone to her original self.
This phone is staying as nude as a newborn.
Only device I have ever put in a case is my iPod touch, as that damn polished metal back scratches so easy and can drastically diminish resale value.
did anybody try the Carbon Fiber Protector Shield Full Body Skin on amazon
Mine has been case and screen protector free for a week now. I've also drunkenly dropped it on 3 or 4 occasions from ear / pocket height. There is no sign of drop not even a scratch. I've noticed the chrome ring around the screen is very durable (i think it might be metal?). And the phone is so light drops don't seem to effect is as much as big metal devices. The screen seems very tough and thick (much thicker than a nexus one screen).
So far im pretty impressed with the build quality considering the "cheap feel" in the hand. I guess we need to stop associating heft with quality.
My only real concern is breaking the volume rocker or power button. They seem extra cheaply made.
Realook. You cannot see its there. And I don't have any problems with the capacitives. Screen is as Vibrant as without it. It truly is invisible and un-feel-able.
right now I'm running nekkid. I wouldn't mind getting some type of case for it though, just in case of the accidental drop, or if my daughter throws it across the room like she did my MT3G (only received 1 small dent on the T-Mobile logo =) )
As for a screen protector, I would like to get one, just have been seeing mixed reviews on them.
i've had mine since launch and its still naked because the god damn USPS sucks a fat nut and wont just drop my THREE DOLLAR EBAY GELLI CASE off in the freaking mailbox because for some reason it ended up getting "signature required"
i pulled the lanyard off an old camera to be safe, i'm so paranoid im going to drop it.

it is soft plastic, no idea how you havent scratched yours. i have been extremely careful with my phone and noticed a small divot in the edge, i havent dropped it or put it anywhere that it could get scratched, no idea where it came from.
Happy to see most are not throwing money away on screen condoms, I have been naked since day one, screen is as new as when i first unboxed, This screen will not scratch PERIOD. For those you think that there is no differance between naked and using clear or ghost condoms, Just stop it, there is a differance, No matter how clear or ghost they claim your still putting a layer of material on the screen and it will effect the clearity, This screen is gorgeous and ment to be naked. BTW I have a TMO gel case incase i drop the phone and they are perfect together, Gives the phone that umph it was missing.

Some DROP statistics

This entire sub-forum is mostly about protective cases ans similar stuff but we have no extensive evidence that some things work as expected - so let's try to get some drop statistics!
Unfortunately the options that can be added to a poll are rather limited so please provide more details (if you have) in text posts here!
For instance my own experience is that I did drop my i9300 a few times but with a case and so far only on 'soft ground' (carpet or similar) and I had no problems. I also have a very thin screen protector on it, which IMHO also has a major impact in reducing glass vibration and thus screen shattering.
Well for about a month barely I have had it, I've dropped it on multiple occasions, and rather hard too! Thankfully it was safely nestled in my 1.75$ case and no harm was done!
Dropped my sgs3 a couple days after buying it. No case, fell about 3 feet onto brick floor on the corner. Shattered screen. $165 to fix.
Fixed screen, bought 2 cases. Mostly use urban armor gear case and have dripped phone many times on concrete never a scratch just perfect.
Yes I am clumsy...
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
Dropped it a couple more scary times since. Just today it skidded on rough concrete in my driveway. Screen fine, but power button maybe a tad less responsive. Can't tell if due to case deformation or actual switch damage because I have very little "naked" experience with the phone can't remember how it is supposed to feel.

I've used the Diztronic TPU case and dropped it several times without any damage done. I've even dropped it intentionally on my buddy's driveway to show off how protective it is. It had generous ridges to prevent damage occurring to the screen.
Now I use the official Samsung protective cover plus and have dropped it numerous times (average drop heights) without any damage being done. The ridges aren't as generous as the diztronic but looks the best of any case I could find for a white GS3. Additionally, the back is made of a textured white plastic which makes it feel more premium. I wouldn't intentionally drop it with this case, even though it would probably be fine, due to the slightly shallower ridges.

Ive dropped mine accidentally, naked, with seidio surface, seidio active, uag, diztronic tpu, samsung cover+, but none with the zoogue so for me zoogue ftw! The phone was fine with all the cases btw.

Avoid cheap TPU cases - can scratch your HTC One!!

When i bought my HTC One Stealth Black, i made sure that i got a perfect model (no defects). I took about an hour in the shop examining all the black HTC One's (they agreed to open 3 boxes for me) before i finally made up my mind. I paid for my phone off-contract and went home perfectly happy with a 801e model (it also has a sticker on the side of the phone that says UKR and on the box as well, so i guess it's from Ukraine and i got a 3-pin power adapter in the box together with the standard 2-pin charger plug) and also got a free TPU case with screen protector, as gift from the shop. Well, i put my phone in the TPU case as soon as i got home for fear of any drops/bumps/scratches, put it in my jeans pocket and went through the rest of my day moving around. Later that afternoon, i pulled the phone out of its case to touch the cold aluminium back and to my horror, i found a scratch (there were no scratches whatsoever before) that matched the contour of the TPU case around the camera. The scratch is around the flash.
Conclusion: The cheap unbranded TPU case seemed to fit the phone snugly but apparently not, as the constant movement and rubbing of the phone within the TPU case from inside my jeans pocket had caused the sharp edge of the TPU case to slowly erode the paint coating. It's a good thing that i noticed it after only one day usage or the etching would have definitely gone deeper, possibly even exposing the aluminium colour after a couple of days. It says "nothing but the best" on the packaging of the unbranded case, which is ironic.
So, my advice (and the reason for my endless rant in this post): stay away from cheap TPU cases, even if it says TPU, which might be true about the material itself but the fact of the matter - without a tight fit of the phone inside the casing, the resulting inside friction between the phone and its casing will damage your phone, causing the paint to wear off. This is probably not applicable to those of you who chose/use the Glacial Silver HTC One, since any scratch will probably not show up. But with time, the constant friction might cause the scratch to become visible. I've attached pictures so you can understand why i'm *****ing about my One By the way, i apologize for my dirty camera lens.
Lesson learnt - i've already ordered 3 casings (the best i could find after hours of searching, for cases that offer a balance between compactness v/s protection); Cimo Grip Back Case Flexible TPU Black, Otterbox Commuter Black and UAG Aero. I wouldn't bother with any other cases, unless you want even more protection, then you should be satisfied with the Otterbox Defender case.
My friend .. ANY case you put on the phone has the potential to scratch the aluminum on the edges. It is simple physics: if you get some dust/sand in between the case and the aluminum (where in other locations can the dust/sand/lint settle ?) any slight pressure or movement of the case will cause a small surface defect. You can not hide from that and you can not prevent that.
Live with it ! It is called reality.

I had the black for a while. I think that it is prone to anything. Apart from light scratches sustained by using the double dip case, the camera cut out of an incipio case left a watermark on it as well. Now using a silver one and not a single scratch. Rotating between three cases.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't anodized AL WAY harder than TPU?
If it is, then isn't it PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for the case itself to scratch the phone?
Either a) there was dust/dirt in the case or
b) it's not a scratch, try wiping it with mild soap, water and a soft cloth.
Interesting thread...you were writing this 3 years ago, I just picked up two pristine condition used m7s, both with nearly all day batteries. Yesterday I got two cases of the first type described below.
I just love these phones so much. They are such a huge upgrade from any phone I have had since I had a droid 2 from motorola before knowing anything at all about these nifty little computers.
I just came in here to say that I will be getting the hard glass protection from now on for every phone I get. Would also recommend to anyone as it is far superior to foils.
Also three good types of cases:
- the hardened shell with no button coverage, and brushed metal exterior
- the clear plastic back, black bumpered semi hard with plugs and accurately designed button enhancers (distinguished by black surface lines on the back coming in from upper and lower edges about a cm each, towards the antennas)
-and believe it or not I really liked the ordinary rubber sort of cases with wavy line down the back and dual texture... as long as they have button covers. But those wouldnt be good for people who have a hard time with the buttons already.
Just picking up these phones starting in June 2016...has made my android experience so much more enjoyable...now being able to play top 3d heavy performance requiring games...and so much different development for the phones.
here's a couple pics of my phone cases I was describing. no scratches whatsoever on the two used like new phones, although its a used case on goldy. the other phones are for family and such, but also loving the cases on them. red looks good in red but it obscures the back... so take clear

SKiNS?! screen protectors?? - This thing slips off FLAT LEVEL surfaces

This is one slippery mofo. Any skins out there? Less than 24 hours and this thing keeps slipping off what I thought were flat level surfaces. If I set it flat on the palm of my hand or on a newspaper on a table, I can watch it slowly inch its way to its doom.
I hate to admit I fell for this line from LG:
MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6, Procedure IV “Transit Drop”)Shock Resistant
Compliant with a military standards test (MIL-STD-810G Method 516.6, Procedure IV “Transit Drop”). Device may not perform as tested in all conditions. Test performed in controlled environment. Do not attempt.

But if you actually look up what this means... you see its pure and simple marketing buII**** as your "controlled environment" can consist of a careful 4 foot drop onto plywood.
So yes.. skins to keep this thing from slipping are needed.
I ordered the Invisible Phone Guard front/back and will show how it works here when it is received. ATT was supposed to give me a screen protector.
I attached a picture to show what happened here. This is from 2 or 3 falls only 2'5" drop onto a laminate floor. The scratches cannot be seen without good light and the photos were taken using a DSLR and macro lens.. so it isn't terrible, but rest assured this has weakened the gorilla glass and the front screen will eventually shatter if it keeps jumping off tables.

Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately, we have no plans to support the LG G8 ThinQ, as there is simply not enough demand to justify adding it to our portfolio at this time. Sorry about that. Let us know if there is anything else we can help with, and have a great day!

i found this to be a good review of the BodyGuardz Pure Arc Curved Tempered Glass Screen Protector for the G8 ThinQ
i thought it was a shill channel looking at other reviews, but he seems to hate this. it fits GREAT, but only has adhesives on the sides and has a visible dot matrix.
on top of that, he says there is an unnatural hollow feel to it due to the adhesive not being full screen. i imagine this will negatively affect the oled speaker.
this is a $50 screen protector that AT&T is giving away as a part of a promotion.
skins... not much out there and only dbrand has responded (with a NEVER).
the Invisible Phone Guard screen protector was OK and visibility was good, but i found the sound to be very slightly muffled as if it is dampening a certain high frequency.
i'm keeping the back on until i find a decent skin.
this film seems like it will blemish easily. it certainly gets dirty easily. pics here...
Having this phone for a few days now and the OP was not lying about how slippery this phone is. A case or skin is a definite must have!

I ordered this case - https://www.ebay.com/itm/273759783563 - I should be getting it later today, I'll post about how well it works.
No sooner did I post this than it came in the mail. Fits on easy, stays on snugly. It's matte rubber without feeling like you're holding a car tire. I had one for my Nexus 6P I really liked and this feels equally good.
This thing is indeed incredibly slippery. I think I'm just going to be extra careful about where I put it down (it's not too slippery in my hands I find, just on certain surfaces), I hate hiding the slick design of the phone with a case. This is also the first phone I've had in a very long time where the camera doesn't bulge out the back, which I really appreciate and don't want to diminish with a case.

Well there are a number of skins now at the varies skin sites though I personally skipped them and simply put the phone into an Otterbox Defender case.
I used a cheap curved glass screen protector ( was like $9) and some loca glue (like $10) to make a DIY full adhesive whitestone kit.
hey everyone - just got my lg g8 a few days ago. i got my case and glass screen protector yesterday. in my head i feel like maybe the screen protector is 'muting' the sound from the screen. has anyone else noticed this, or is it just in my head?

I have not had that issue and I am using a Supershieldz screen protector however my brother who is using an Iphone 7 recently had that issue with one due to a screen protector he picked up at Walmart though it resolved once he removed it.
It's amazing to watch this phone slowly creep off of my wireless charger, which has a rubbery grippy surface! My case arrives today...
I'm using slickwraps for the back of my phone and I like it. I would say they are slightly less precise than dbrand, but still great quality. If people would like photos, please let me know.
I'm using a Nillkin slim case, adds no bulk and provides some grippiness.
I also have a Spigen Crystal Clear gel case that's very nice, but is more bulky than the Nillkin.
As for screen protectors, i've found that glass ones are useless for this phone. I tried a couple full adhesive brands with the idea that i would fill the little gap on the edges with LOCA but of the 6 protectors that i applied, they all had a problem sticking fully in some flat areas of the screen. It was always the exact same spots so I came to the conclusion that the LG screen itself isn't 100% flat in those areas so I settled on the Ringke Dual Easy Film screen protector.
Huge Thanks!
Weston
You may want to think about giving the Skinomi Full Body Skin a try. It definitely keeps my phone from slipping off of surfaces, giving the phone a bit of a plastic-rubber feel while still letting the beauty of the phone show through. The back protector doesn't interfere with any cases and offers a bit of mental relief for those times you want to carry your phone without a case.
Dude, I had my g8 for 2 days. Was in. The washroom and the phone was on a roll of toilet paper (the flat side, obviously haha) and got a notification. Before I knew it the phone slid off and landed on the bottom right corner, heard an alarming "tink" sound but didn't think anything of it. A few mins later I saw a small crack, then I looked again and realized that there were multiple cracks on the screen. Ended up getting it replaced by my carrier, I said it was damaged in shipping. Point is that this phone is a glass cannon: it's very powerful for specs but it will have a broken screen if you sneeze on it the wrong way. This is one of the massive downsides to the new gorilla glass. Sure it's scratch resistant but with the wrong amount of pressure it will get destroyed :/

I've dropped this thing so many times because it's so slippery. Seems like every other week I hear it jump off a table a few minutes after I leave the room.
I have a crack on 3 corners, but nothing across the screen. My case (which I tend to take off when connecting it to things such as controllers or some USB cables) almost hides the cracks.
However, these are more like small missing chunks of glass on the corners. I've never had such a fragile phone. I tried super glue on the corners to keep it from spreading, but eventually just went to town on the corners with silicone conformal coating that I had sitting around. It seems to be working great and keeps the little shards coated and sort of glued in there. I kind of prefer this to replacing the screen as replacements have only gone down slightly to around $150 shipped from China and I know I'll just end up breaking that one.
There's always been one or two deal breakers with all of my LG phones and that's why I kept going to a different manufacturer as soon as I could. I hate to say it but after this, I'm never going back to LG again no matter what cool unique feature they're wooing me with.
I basically used this phone with a broken screen for 5 months. Replacements are still $150 (better than $200 back when it broke). It dropped approximately 1.5ft face down onto a clay tile floor and front screen has cracks all over. It almost looks somewhat inverted now as if the screen was designed to have tension. Well I went and got a note 10+ and man it is great to have a real phone again. Doesn't have some of the edgy LG stuff that I really loved and theres no headphone jack... but bigger/brighter screen that isn't broken is so nice to have. Good luck with your screens guys.... I'll replace mine when the price is reasonable and either go back to using it or put it on ebay.

I have reached the same conclusion about the screen not being flat enough to utilize a hard glass protector even if you avoid the very curved edge portions. I tried the curved, glued only on the edge types first but that always had a weird optical effect and wasn't very ruggedly glued on, none in the middle. Why? I haven't tried using whitestone glue yet.
So the suggested one sounds interesting. https://www.amazon.com/Ringke-Compa...dge-Application/dp/B07NHMBNLH#customerReviews
I think I'll watch the videos first.
I also found these but yes a firm, solid piece of glass is a no go IMHO. Not a fan of these new case designs for all the new phones. Why de do dat?

Still hoping for a solution. I had great luck with Spigen Crystal screen protector SGP10855 for my LG G3 which is hard but I believe would be flexible enough if it skipped the curved edges but they don't make anything like that?
UPDATE: After watching the LG G8 video on YouTube I decided to go with the Rinke.
I'll report back. This will be 4th type attempted.
I put it on this morning. It is pretty easy to get this on with good alignment and no bubbles.
Two things.
1. If you watch the YouTube instructions the place where the dust dust cleaning sticky backing splits in half does leave a slightly perceptable crease in the soft protector. Maybe it will smooth out with time? It did not with the squeegee.
2. It's soft so you can possibly nick with your fingernails and it's also easy to lift an edge ever so slightly during final finishing so be careful.
I see no installation flaws but it also isn't a hard glass but then those do not install properly even when undersized because the screen is not level as you get near the edges as far as 1/4" away. The film eliminates this issue but will it protect and stay on.
We shall see.
I sell a lot of these devices and it is even hard to photograph them on a smooth surface because they will start around on my table. Put it in a case, the screens are expensive.

Question Would it be too risky to use skin not case?

I'm waiting for my fold 4 to arrive next week, have ordered some nice skin from sopiguard. I'm thinking about using skins but not case as the Fold 4 itself is already bulky enough to have more more layer on it. Any thoughts?
if you tend to drop your phone a lot like me then get a case or samsung adld insurance or else they gonna charge another phone amount to repair it
I would love to have only a skin on mine, but I work in a warehouse and need all of the protection I can get. I opted for a bulky case (in my mind bulk is protection). I went with the UB Pro. When I had my Zfold3, it fell off a forklift and sustained no damage. Just consider your lifestyle before making the decision between a skin and a case.
happened yesterday when i went to the mall with my son. dropped by jb hifi before going to eb games as he wanted to buy something. saw someone looking at the fold on display and was contemplating on getting it. i guess the guy beside him overhead and he took out his fold to show it. i guess he was overly enthusiastic and he dropped it right off. i'm currently using a neoprene sleeve while i waited for the case i ordered arrive. but after seeing what happened, i went straight to the local phone shop stall and bought one immediately. didn't leave the shop until i had the case on.
Personally I tend to use a case (stylus) for work or the flap piece when out and about, but I go caseless when I'm home or any chance I can. I've thought about just getting a skin but the last time I did that it was a pocket magnet and was always cleaning the edges.

Cases are just an extra step towards protection. Not that skins dont offer protection, they do indeed protect the device from scratches but a high impact on the device could probably cause an issue. It depends on the intensity of the drop. Even if you drop your phone multiple times but the intensity or drop height is low, Skins would take care of the impact. Cases mainly do their work for higher drop heights which are unlikely to happen at all times. The drops are usually from the height of your pocket or a desk so some good quality Skins and Screen Protector should take care of it. I use Skins cause I hate the feeling of a bulky device and Ive dropped my phone multiple times but havent faced any major damage. Most times, sides of the phone take the initial impact which are covered by Skins, so there are no scratches.
Ive used dbrand and Gadgetshieldz but I prefer GS more since they are way more affordable for the same quality thats offered by dbrand. Screen Protectors are also from GS since they have a Matte option and for all parts of the device. Ive covered the Camera lens and Screen with the Screen Protector and the rest are wrapped with Skins.
SKins vs. Cases debate is as old as the first fold phone out.. I have several cases, and they do a good job, but I hate all of them. With a bulky (when folded) phone, adding a case makes things worse but here are the advantages:
1. Protection when dropping the phone (dah)
2. Pen holder (if the case supports it)
3. Most cases have a better grip and help opening to the inner screen, unlike having a smooth metal lip to work with.
and they are SOOOO ugly and thick (even the 'slim' ones)
I use skins, most of the time , because they are allowing me using a much thinner phone. I do take the risk of dropping the phone, and the fact skins have more traction help me not to have the phone slip out of my hand. In 8 months, I did drop the phone twice, and it survived the falls. I guess I am careful and lucky at the same time..
So the answer is pretty much individual - Do you tend to make your phone fly out of hand normally? based on your own 'history' - did you ever break a phone dropping it? That is sort of predictive answer regarding skin vs. a case..
