Samsung Note 10.1 2014 Edition - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Just got my New Samsung tablet for $200 at Fry's Electronic Brand new in the box. Was it worth the money????

Yes.. perfect timing! Enjoy the lollipop goodness!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk

Now you ask? ☺
But yes, with the new upgrade it's a great tablet.

Great Deal
That is a pretty great deal. I've seen people pay more for a used one before.

Is the lollipop update ota or do I have to flash??

What a name for a thread

I was just getting ready to make a thread asking if this tablet was worth buying now but saw this thread and wasnt sure what it was about and i see my question is answered. with the lollipop update did the lag that is shown in videos get better?
my main use for it will be drawing so im not to worried about ui lag really just thought i would ask. also anyone seen/used this case before, was thinking about getting one.

If you're gonna ask if tablet is worth buying, the answer is: YES it is. I have the SM-P601 3G and I'm really happy with it. Out there, the new and available samsung tablet are pretty much the same as this one, except that ours include S-Pen.
The best part is Lollipop is coming to this tablet.
And it doesn't matter which official firmware you update to, the lag will always exist as long as it is Samsung's. If you don't want those laggy UI, flash custom ROM which I recommend this one (3G variant) http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal.../sm-p601-cyanogenmod-12-0-unofficial-t3052009
I am very satisfied with this tablet, and I'm not regret choosing this over Tab S 10.5 (or even the new tab s2). Right now, in my country, this note 10.1 (3g) is still more expensive than tab s 10.5 (without warranty) because of its popularity, no matter what marketing they made for tab s.

At that price.. Definately....

[Q] How easy will it be for AOSP rom makers to develop for the new Note 10.1?

Hi guys,
I have completely ditched Samsung after letting me down with the first Galaxy Note.
They did not open source their drivers at the time of ICS. So the devs could not get project butter to run.
So we were stuck with using Samsung roms if you wanted any buttery smoothness.
It has been a long time and I have only used Nexus devices since.
How is Samsung doing now?
Did they come around? Are they open sourcing their drivers?
Is the CM team for example going to be able to fully support the Note 10.1 Exynos processor?
Cheers,
Daan
I hope so the rise this will be my last Samsung product

Is your Note 3 supported by AOSP rom makers?
I didn't find the butter back then. My Huawei Pad had less free ram, in order to buffer more screen contents, methinks, but nothing got smoother.
But I should have considered the situation on the Note about custom roms, before buying one.
Will take a look, for academic reasons, whether Experia Tablet Z owners have custom roms, that was number two on my list, and cheaper.
This is currently the best tablet on the market. Why cripple it with an AOSP ROM? Is there something I'm missing here?

Well, I hate touchwiz with a burning passion. I'd much rather it be closer to stock Android. The pen should still work, as it works with the Note 3, so you won't loose any functionality.

Cripple it? No, you will improve the device and any of the functionality that you think you are losing is equaled or improved on with other apps once you are rooted.
My S4 is significantly better after installing Kit Kat vs. Touchwiz. I am undecided on rooting my tab 10.1 2014 due to some security requirements.

That's the thing... you will waste so much time trying to get back the functionality the tablet already has out of the box that it's not worth it. I have CM 11 on my S3 becuase is makes more sense on a phone, but on this tablet with the features it offers you're just wasting the potential of this device. When I pay $600 for something I want everything working and working correctly (excluding some of the S-features) sounds like a Nexus 10 would have been a better fit for you.

I got tired of waiting for the Nexus 10 2. It was my first choice of tablet with the rumored specs. In favor of the Note 2014 - it is on the market now, it was a price I was happy with and it has an SD slot which the Nexus would not. Plus if you want a 10" tablet it is really the only Android option right now. Is it perfect or my ideal tablet? No, clearly not.
Also to your point concerning price. I am with you - the tablet is not worth $600 to me. However I picked up the 32gb version through the Groupon deal. For $420 I think I am satisfied enough to keep it (still making that determination). Or at least I do not regret spending the money.
I am not a big gamer nor am I trying to do any coding on the tablet but to me the Note 2014 comes pretty close to being a laptop replacement. It is not all the way there but I can now travel, attend meetings, etc. without feeling too handicapped if I do not have my laptop with me.
What little I have read on the subject it sounds like rooting this tablet is pretty easy and then just a couple of apps to expand the stock functionality. Hell, I will probably spend more time trying to setup the tablet the way I want through Touchwiz, Nova, or another launcher than if I simply rooted it.

You are right it would be problem solved. Unfortunately I need an "unmolested" tablet for some of the networks/systems I connect to. A rooted tablet will trip security warnings and will be blocked.
Guys, guys, guys! This thread was marked as a [Q]!
It has gone completely off topic.
Those with S4's, S3's and newer Notes, how is your experience with AOSP roms?
Is it easy for open source devs to develop for them?
It doesn't matter who likes what, or why you can't root because of security issues.
The question is: will it be easy to develop non touchwiz Roms.

The answer will be no. The device is very expense and will not get much support in general. Also there seems to very little supoort for the Note 3 with the Exynos Octa. As others have stated I do not see the reason for wanting AOSP on a Note device. You will lose almost all support for the pen and pen specific apps since the cost is so high for the device it seems a waste to not use the pen.

[Q] Is this device worth buying now?

Hi.
I currently own a Galaxy Note 10.1 (2012) and unfortunately I woke it up during lunch and was surprised to find that the screen now hates black and now it displays things incorrectly. It's still usable but ugly to look at. So I've read some reviews and it seems that the battery life is much worse and it's laggy even with 8 cores. So after more than 6 months, is this cellphone/tablet worth it now? I prefer the 10 inch notes for random sketching though but I normally do my art with a real Wacom tablet. I'm thinking of either suffering until the release of the next Galaxy Note 10.1 or possibly jump at Asus Transformer Book V or just jumping to the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. I mainly just use my tablet for Internet and drawing on Sketchbook Pro.
If you are normal with a life and don't sit around all day and pick at everything , This tablet is the best out there for the money,,I have had mine since Dec 21013 and had no issues , I'm rooted and its stupid fast and does everything, Don't listen to the reviews on this tab, most of the bad ones are IPad goons and people with way too much time on their hands.

best Android tablet right now — better than the Asus/Tegra offering, with higher res and functionality than Sony's Xperia Z2 Tab. can't beat the SPen. only gripe is the Sammy Book cover is crazy expensive.

you're lucky ... ordered mine through Amazon (.ca), but the only places that would ship to Canada started around $60. crazy thing is that it's not stocked at BestBuy or FutureShop here, even though they sell the tablet.

Doh! Didn't see the Maple Leaf the first time. I've always wondered that if a "friend" sends something like that (mine came in just a regular 8x10-ish packing envelope) to you in Canada, how closely would HM Customs examine it, and if the shipping would be crazy expensive?
Too bad about Best Buy- ours here have them (at MSRP, though).

if it's a "gift", we are allowed up to a certain amount, but that designation depends on the seller (eBay peeps can be accommodating). sometimes i'll get stuff shipped to Point Roberts, just across the border, and then take a drive and roll the dice with the border guard. i've had $700 phones and gear sent that way, and have lucked out.
you Americans get all the good stuff! the black version of the P600 hasn't even been released yet here. and probably won't be ...
gotta say, i really dig the Official Book Cover. slim, and still shows off the design of the tablet, with just enough protection for the screen (not using any film or tempered glass on the screen.

PM me, if you'd like.
If you want to root while keeping warranty, I suggest NOT buying this tablet.
I just bought it and regretted it due to the above. I don't install custom ROM, but I need root for Xposed (unrestricted Multiview), debloat (seems very necessary for Samsung devices) and back up (Helium and Titanium Backup).
Don't spread misinformation- you can get root w/o tripping Knox nor voiding your warranty.

For Wifi version?! I know there is one for 3G/LTE with TowelRoot, but but not Wifi version. CF Root for Wifi will trip KNOX.
If there is, please do share. I'd love to root my tablet.

Well, can you share the link how to do this? Then maybe you can ask mod to update the FAQ, since as of today, there is NO root for KK for Wifi without tripping KNOX.
Here's the FAQ: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723420
Here's the CF root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490805
Let's play nice...
I would say yes to buying. On the neg for me I root and custom rom all Android devices I own and got mine this weekend not having read this forum. It came with 4.4.2 so I can only root but cannot do a custom recovery for a custom rom as some here have had theirs longer than I.
Don't know if any love will come for the 442 but if root is not your concern it is a sweet device. I know without a custom rom I am missing another level that they offer.

I am playing nice - I gave OP info about root just in case he wants to do so.
However, I was "accused" of spreading mis-information by @kcrudup and @GalaxyNotesTx. If I gave wrong info, correct me by providing the link to rooting Wifi version without tripping KNOX, and I'll fix my post.
FYI: I just got this tablet yesterday and have been searching XDA and Googling other forums and sites - no root without tripping KNOX for wifi version. So I don't want OP to be as disappointed as me IF he/she wants root.
After my Note 3 and Moto G was stolen ,, i bought LG G Pro Lite Dual and thinking on getting a tablet for Games Movies and all kind of entertainment ,,, for a week now i was reading and watching all reviews and i can't choose between the Note 10.1 2014 Edition and Tab S 10.5
The Note 10.1 2014 is already available for a good price the 3G version will cost me around 550USD while the Tab S isn't here yet and don't know it's price but for sure it will be more expensive
so do you advice getting the Note 10.1 2014 or shall i wait for the Tab S ??!!

I think it depends on whether you need the S-pen or not. I've looked at the Tab S, but I need the pen.
Plus, the Note is only $459 at Amazon, so it's cheaper.

Can't get it throw Amazon here in Egypt so i have to get it from any local store ,, i used Note 2 and Note 3 but i can't say that i use the SPen that much ,, it's a great addition indeed but holding 2 phones in my hand before prevented me from using the SPen
the main issue that the Tab S will be out of my budget fore sure but if it worth it then i will try to get one whenever it's here also they almost identical in specifications except for the screen Super LCD Vs. Super AMOLED
I guess for sure that Samsung will update all this devices for Android L so i don't have to worry about it
I would prefer to get the Snapdragon version but it's a quit rare in common and hard to get so i have to stick to the Exynos although i prefer the Snapdragon
So what do you think ?!

Don´t do the same mistake we did !
There may be an update to KitKat but it would be the last update. (ASUS releases much more updates than Samsung)
And building custom ROMs for the 10.1 variant, is (at this time) unpossible because of the Intel chipset.
If you don´t care about these aspects, it´s still a powerfull tablet for working with documents or watching streams, movies.

Was, why did you bother even asking the question if the Tab 3 was worth the purchase of you had already purchased it. Yes, the Tab 3 was a mistake, not only is this tablet very laggy do to TouchWiz not being optimized for x86 (should have given you hint when they haven't released another model with this cpu as of yet) but the system only leaves 300mb of memory available to apps. Samsung has been promising Kit Kat for ever and at this point it looks like it will never happen, not only that but the custom ROMs are few to none, with most being abandoned. Sell this piece of crap and my suggestion, would be to never buy another midtier Samsung tablet again. They just don't care, once they release a tablet it's forgotten and layed to the side for the next 20 Samsung released that week. Even the new Tab 4 is a waste of money, the Tab 4 should have been what the Tab 3 was, so it's already obsolete, their just fast-food tablets.
If you check out the general forum the majority of threads are for the 7 inch model, why anyone in their right mind would buy such a piece of garbage is beyond me but you know it's bad when Samsung's cheapest model gets updated before the higher end model and I use that term lightly.
Spend a little money and buy something decent, checkout some of the new Windows 8 tablets they are very good and are reasonably priced.

[Q] Are you happy with your note 10.1 (2014 Edition)

I just ordered it and I will have my paws on my Note on Monday. I am very excited but I want to know what everyone else thinks. I have gone back and forth from Android to Apple and back. I wanted to go not only Android but back to Samsung. I am looking at going to the Galaxy Note 4 when that goes on sale next month.
But really. with not having root access (yet) are you still happy with the Note 10.1?
Happy? Yes, very.
I have the P605, so am rooted without knox fuse trip.
It took me a while to choose a tablet, UK Note 10.1" 2014's are only 16GB Wifi only versions AFAIK, and for the money I was spending I wanted better specs, so I had to order a Hong Kong p605 import which allowed me to have 3g/4g and have 32GB storage (64B would have been too much $$).
I was replacing a Note 1 (n7000) so needed something that I could use as a phone too, didn't want to mess with 2 devices, tethering, etc.
The only issue I have so far is a distinct lack of accessories. I wish there was a choice of docks, cases, etc.
So yeah, other than that, very happy, it is fast and smooth and does what I need it to.
Some UK carriers don't allow tablets to be used on their networks, my 3 sim detected and rejected my p605 saying it was not allowed, but that is not really the tablets fault.

First let me say that some people are not happy with anything, and nothing is ever perfect.
I have a stock SM-P600 32 GB and I'm very happy. I also have a Stock GT-8013 that was restored back to stock from root and my wife is happy with it also.
Had my SM-P605 LTE tablet since December and still loving it. Not rooted and with OTA updates I am at KitKat 4.4.2. I use Nova Launcher and it's smooth as butter. No issues whatsoever. Enjoy your new baby
The best tablet ever, even sale my iPad to get this one and I dont regret it. I have upgrade to KK rooted and install custom rom. ?
Am I happy with the tablet? Thats a deffo yes it is truely an awesome tablet.
Am I happy with samsung updates? Thats a different subject lol. Either way overall theres no denying this tablet is amazing but maybe I'm just a tad wierd and slightly annoyed at the way Samsung handles their updates (Still no kitkat in UK 10 months on), I keep blabbering on that this is my last samsung product but who am I kidding - nothing compares in terms of note features. Will have to wait and see haha.
Anyhoo am sure you'll love it

The screen is outstanding, the performance is great, the spen works really well. I don't like that the USB plug is at the bottom of the device. You cannot charge the 10.1 while watching movies in landscape. The 12.2 has the plug on the side.

If you rotate your device 180 degrees the screen rotates as well. then you can plug it in at the top and watch your movies.
I love my note, wouldn't mind an update in the UK though to KK. maybe one day?
Hong Kong 32gb p605 here, running stock 4.4.2 rooted with towel root. Very happy except for the lack of accessory options.

There is original dock station for our baby and also I have information from official samsung store that this one
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA
also will work, still I did not test it yet.
To be in subject. I love my P605 and I hate Samsung that they did not focus more on promotion of it and there is few accessories in the market which you can get to it.
Second thing is the lack of support for many software designed for it. For example:
1. No possibility to unlock your PC(send ctrl+alt+del) when you are connect to it via Samsung Remote PC
2. Few note themes to SNotes - they could add much more
and much more.
Still it is defo worth to get it since it is still the best Tablet with Android in the market(TAB S don't have SPen and Xperia Z2 tablet is only marketing nymber1)
BR.
I have the exynos p600 and am very unhappy with it. I'm used to very fast speeds as I find on my smart phones but Samsung tablets lag way too much. Doesn't matter what specs you load them with. Touchwiz finds a way to hog it down. Tablet is decent..though build is cheap, back plate isn't even leather..its plastic made to look like leather. And the chrome..just awful. But I'm stuck with this as there a very few other android tablets worth swapping for at the moment

I havent had an Android tablet in a while. My last was an ASUS T300 or something. I did have an 8 inch Galaxy Tab 2 last summer. I remember it being bogged down with Touch Wiz and being kinda laggy. Does putting another launcher (example: Nova Launcher) speed things up since you arent using the touch wiz launcher?

Nova helps a bit, but the Kitkat update is probably also enough already.
Sort of; great tablet, great screen, pen is a blessing for school notes and drawings, the processor is a beast and it has enough ram. Now, i dont like almost anything that samsung did with it, it is either useless, buggy, slow or too small a detail to have touchwiz for. I wish i could deal with it installing cm or any other distribution but i have the p600 model so it seems i am ****ed. Sorry if i cant give opinion of roms like hydronium and xkat but i havent tried them because they seem to be only scrambled touchwiz.
All in all, for the price i got it for(around 400$) and with so so writing apps like "write" this is one of the only tablets that let me use it as a notebook so i am mildly happy with it.
TL;DR: Tablet is great, Touchwiz is not that great. Get p605 model.

I'm happy with this tablet, but not happy with stupid Samsung.
Very happy with this tablet, but can't stand TouchWiz and any of the S apps.
Replace TouchWiz with either Nova or Google launcher and S apps with anything else from Google Play (example: lecture notes).
About a year after Android L comes out and we are still on kit kat, I might feel a little different.

[Question] Is it still worth getting the note 10.1 2014 edition?

Hey everyone,
I really need a good tablet for home multimedia consumption and maybe college. I could get either version: SM-P600 or the 605.
Should I still purchase the note even though it's so old, I am kinda iffy because of the discontinued software updates etc?
What is the latest security patch?
Or, is there any other tablet with stylus that would be better?
I looked at the new Zenpad from Asus.
Would anyone be kind enough to help me? Thanks
It is still on android 5.1.1. There was a recent update and security patch is sept 2016 i think. Great tablet though but a tad too expensive. If you dont have much use for the spen i would suggest a different tablet. Rom dev for this device is pretty active but i have stayed stock since i bought it.
Not sure what ur budget is. I would suggest sticking to mainstream brands. With asus i am not sure of dev support on xda or update support from asus themselves.
On a side note, nokia seems to be preparing to launch a new android tablet.

Thanks for your help. Which model would you suggest getting 605 or 600? I wouldn't mind spending 500 for a brand new device. The s-pen would be very useful for me. I absolutely love the stylus and the abilities it gives you. Do you think I could still work with the 10.1 for 2 years?

Are you planning on installing a custom ROM? Not sure if the 605 you are looking at has an unlocked bootloader. That might make up your decision.
IMO, I would not spend $500 on the P600 becaues it is indeed 2 years old. I chose to get a second hand one a few weeks ago for a pretty good price (~$150). At that price, its a decent tablet but you can kind of tell it is getting a little old. With CM13 installed, there's new life in the tablet. Noticeably faster and mSD as internal storage are huge.
If s-pen is not a deal breaker, that Zenbook from Asus is nice. Is it 64GB/4GB?
Sorry I didn't express myself clear enough lol
I meant I would spend $500 on a new tablet. I would only dish out $200 for the note 10.1.
Yes, it's this one: ASUS Zenpad Z500M-C1-GR. It has stylus support as well. Unfortunately it's sold out on Amazon
I would recommend the Nvidia Shield K1 it's around 200 bucks. Good specs, xda area is filled with nice roms and works in progress. However it's a 8 inches tablet and has about 6000 mah capacity, the K1 versions doesn't have the stylus pen nor the charger included but you can buy the pen for about 10-20 bucks and you probably already have a charger.
The note 2014 have nice specs even in late 2016, but it's in shadows because of Samsung's bad support and woeful software, the oem roms are basically mandatory if you want the S-pen functions, the CM roms are maintained by some nice folks in the forum but they aren't still 100% yet and you loose yer S-pen functions (I'm aware of a specific app that can help restoring the S-pen functions, but its not 100%).
So I would recommend you to stay away from the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014.
had mine for 3 years now and its working perfectly and meets all my tablet needs, the best bit being the superb screen and I see no need to upgrade it
would I buy it now if I needed a tablet? at a reasonable price definitely yes...if you are an avid tablet gamer (im not) then I would consider one with more graphics power
but this tablet is still more than holding its own ...im on my 5th case! and its still immaculate
I'm very happy of how long this tablet has lasted me.
For a while there, when on the ok1 firmware (XAR), I couldn't install or update apps. It would reboot almost every time. I was considering getting a tabpro s (Windows10) as a replacement, but pulled the trigger on a gaming laptop instead.
With the latest update, everything is working great again. Not even rooted. Don't need to be. It may not be marshmallow, but getting support for literally 3 years since launch isn't bad. With no replacement/successor for the N10.1 2014 rumored, we may (probably not) get marshmallow before they fully kill support for this beast.

If you can get one for a good price, I think it's still a very good tablet.
I dropped mine and shattered the screen a few months ago. Because if the way it is built, you cannot just replace the glass. The whole screen and digitizer is one unit. So, since there was no real other 10-inch tablet with the screen resolution and the S Pen support that the Note 10.1 has, I ended up buying a used one on eBay to replace it.
I am using mine everyday, and I use the S Pen all the time to take notes. It's replaced a paper notebook for me.
I had the opportunity to work with a Surface Pro tablet at work, and although it is a great machine, and it can replace a laptop, I found it a bit too big and heavy to use as a notebook replacement to take notes. I still carry my tablet everywhere with me.
