My fiance and I each have a note 4, both are having the same issue although hers started doing it first. You can set the phone on your leg face up and the screen will repeatedly turn on just sitting there. There may be a few seconds or a few minutes between the screen coming on but it consistently does it. This is not associated with a text or notification, and Air Wake is disabled. It appears to be either proximity sensor or accelerometer in nature from what I can guess. Cache has been wiped, but have not tried factory resetting and would prefer not to lol.

This issue is more of an annoyance than anything but my S4 screen wakes up for no apparent reason then it returns to sleep a couple of seconds later. There does not seem to be any specific timing or pattern to it that I can identify. What might be causing this issue?

It might be the air gesture to check notifications: if the phone is on a flat surface and the light sensor is blocked briefly, the LED flashes blue and the screen wakes up to show you time and several notifications (missed calls, texts, emails, etc.).
I noticed that mine was doing it at dinner last night every time I reached for my water glass...I finally had to put it face down on the table because it was driving me nuts.

I currently have Air Gestures turned off and it is still happening. Had to turn the phone face down last night to keep the wife from assaulting me. She said the damn phone was like a floodlight in the room.
I was wondering if someone has noticed similar behavior on their G3. My G3 is 100% stock and is only a week old. Wherever I wake up my device, about 5 seconds after turning it the screen has a small flicker and the screen seems to auto adjust or calibrate. This only happens once every time I wake up the device. My auto-brightness is set to off and the screen is at 100% brightness. I did some tests and noticed that when I wake up the device with the top sensors covered (proximity, front camera etc), that the screen doesn't have this flick to it. Is there some sort of "outdoor" mode or something on these where the screen will self calibrate when it notices it's in a bright situation?
Please test on your devices and let me know if you see anything similar to this. I tried taking a video but it's so quick and subtle that the video doesn't show it.
mine does same. vzw. covered sensors, still brightness adjustment.
only just now noticed today, but could have been happening all along.
I think it has something do with the proximity sensor. If you cover the sensor with a note pad you cannot turn on the screen, prob a tap to wake feature so it doesn't turn on in your pocket. But if you lift the note pad just enough to turn the screen on and quickly cover it, mine does not flick. I have tried this many times and worked 100% of the times.
My friend who works for at said that his does the same as well as the demo. Must be a weird firmware issue. Hopefully its resolved in the next ota
How many times are you gonna make this thread?

I seem to be having an issue with the screen turning on at random. I have Always-on screen set to ON and tilt-to-wake set to OFF, but the screen will turn on sometimes seemingly at random and multiple times in a row. I have done Factory Reset a couple of times and it does not help.
Is there anyone else with this occurance and is there a fix for it?

I have this issue too. I've tried several configurations and it keeps doing it.

Any apps that send a lot of notifications or any notifications that are automatically dismissed/very briefly show up? Can't think of anything else that would wake your watch.
No, not on mine.

I have the exact same issue. At first I thought it was tilt-to-wake having poor gesture recognition so I turned it off. However I noticed without touching the screen it would turn on and then turn off after the stand-by time. To verify that was the case I left it sitting on my desk all day and observed that it would in fact randomly turn on and off. I also noticed that when the issue occurs the battery life decreases rapidly.
Also this issue will continue to occur even in theater mode.
Have you find a solution yet? My smartwatch 3 does the screen turn on randomly and then also touch screen issue occurs, and it makes random touches, swipes going into settings and so on, without touching the screen. I'am on the latest wear version mwd49b.
For more info search on youtube for my video about this problem: Sony SmartWatch 3 screen problem.
I recently began having the same problem. The screen does not turn off after it randomly turns on - I have to manually press the button to turn it off. Needless to say, this tend to run down the battery. I did a factory reset this morning, but the problem persists.
EDITING POST JULY 20:
After factory reset, I actually had the watch doubly connected to the phone, so I have corrected that now. However the problem with the random turn-ons began occurring well before the factory reset. I'm not sure what triggers it, or what stops it, but when it begins to happen, it drains the battery very quickly. The problem only began recently (within the past few weeks), so I'm not sure what changed to bring this on.
A bug in Android Alarm Clock keep the watch active after alarm ring. Just corrected yesterday by an update on Google Alarm/Clock app.
On the phone > android wear app > settings icon on top right > device settings (smartwatch 3) >tilt to wake set to off
During phone calls while using the phone on my ear, the screen will dim like normal and touch is not responsive... But after the call, I move the phone away from my ear, the screen will not wake-up and requires waking with power button. I can only recall a handful of times where the phone acted normally after a call...
Anyone else experiencing this? I am rooted w/ magisk and I have verified the proximity sensor is working (using Droid Info app) -
I am turning off adaptive battery not only to see if it helps with this concern, but overall performance and will update w/ changes
Had this happen as well. Not rooted. Can't remember but i vaguely recall this with other versions of android

Same. And it doesn't happen every time.
Right after I posted this, made a phone call and it blacked out again this time no power button, double tap, shake, twist, etc would wake the phone. Eventually after about 2 mins it woke up again...
Possibly unrelated, but about every 1 in 5 reboots my screen won't turn on. Stays black, no back light. The phone still responds to ADB and fastboot commands, but nothing will turn the screen on until I hold down power to restart.
Same here.its happened multiple times. naked Pixel here, not rooted. its annoying.
I've made/received 100 calls since Thursday, and it happened for the first time last night. I was able to get it out of black by accidentally doing a screenshot while trying to reboot.
Happened at least 4 times today. Just noticed an update to the Phone app was released, let's see if that makes a difference.
No screen protector, etc.
honestly after some more calls with this issue, i think my dirty ear and is causing the close proximity reading... after the most recent episode, i went to the droid info app and it was reading the sensor at 0 cm and after wiping the notch off, it started to read correctly (5.0 cm) >>> i dont really want to give the haters another reason to dog the notch but, in my case, i think its going to be an issue. i may switch the "power button to end call" on and see if that will alleviate my issue for now -

Same exact thing happened with me yesterday, could it be a RAM management issue?

Thanks for the heads up. I have unrooted and naked 3 XL. This screen off thing was affecting all calls. If the remote party hung up, I was fine. If I got into someones VM, I had to sit quietly until the call dropped.
I added myself to the Phone app Beta program and updated. After several test calls, I think it's fixed.
Is anyone else having issues recently with their pixel 2XL being able to detect their face against it on a call.
Sometimes I'll be on a call and feel my phone vibrate and when I peek at the screen, I can see the screen is on and it's on a random page like my alarm settings, because my cheek pushed against a button on the home screen for example.
Also, when pulling the unit away from my face sometimes the unit doesn't light back up and i have to push the physical on button to get it to turn on.
Or even worse this week, I've noticed that after my phone doesn't light back up when I pull it away from my face and I try to turn it back on with the on button, it doesn't work... the screen never turns back on, I have to double push the button to get the camera to pop up and then dismiss it to get back to the home screen.
It's getting pretty frustrating. Has anyone had this issue? Anything I can look into to fix this?
I`ve been having this random issues with the proximity sensor and my phone not able to charge with the stock charger.
The proximity sensor is right by the ear piece so if you have your ear touching first it should, in theory, turn off the screen before your cheek touches the screen. Personally, I don't have my cheek touching at all while on a call but I have a slim face.

Download a sensor test app and check for proximity sensor. I had a similar issue some time back. Reboot fixed it for me.
