Recommendations for good in-home use of Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I've owned my 2013 Nexus 7 (WiFi) since it was released. However, over the past year I've found that it pretty much always remains shoved in a drawer powered off, as I just don't seem to have a need/use for it.
In an attempt to make it useful again, I'm looking to see what other creative things people are doing with their Nexus 7's. Let me hear your ideas!

In car install, but laziness set me back lol

I haven't done it yet, but I'm planning to make a flip down shelf under my kitchen cabinet to hold mine. I use mine a lot when I'm cooking to look up recipes and to listen to music.

Set it up on your desk and have it stream the content of your choice while you work.
Hell, you could even use it as a very expensive picture frame.

The car install was my initial plan but I recently bought a new car with an excellent head unit so that desire is gone.
Leaving it in the kitchen for recipes is a great idea. My Fiancee loves to cook and she might find that extremely useful. I'll discuss that with her.
I considered having it hooked up to my home office speakers to stream music from. I may still do that. However, I tend to keep my laptop hooked up to the audio because if I click to watch a video, I like to have it play through the speakers. But I may toy with this idea.

Sell it on swappa.

I watch Netflix and other video in bed, perfect size for that.

I have it in a case that can tilt it up. I keep it in the master bathroom with a bluetooth speaker. Music while I shower, Sportscenter while I get ready in the morning etc. Also is my book reader when I travel. With a good bluetooth speaker it's a pretty great little portable entertainment device.

Ultimate iPhone Experience

I have had an iPhone for the past year, and couldn't be happier. However, I recently came across an idea that makes a huge difference in how you use your iPhone, and only costs $39.
http://www.pressdigital.com.au/phon...sories/kidigi-apple-iphone-cradle-p-6004.html
Does not seem like a big deal, but I bought one of these docks for my phone, a car adapter, and a stereo cord, and mounted them in my car. Now, I just sit down, set the phone in the dock, and my music starts playing through the speakers. The phone starts charging. So, I spend a lot more time using the phone because its not a hastle to hook it up.
Hello IPhone lover
You might not have realized this but this forum is WM Devices specific. No one here talks about Iphone's unless is is an Iphone skin or app or something for WM Devices.
You need to search for Iphone specific forum - You might find more people interested in this even though there are likley some XDA members who own IPhone's as well.
Take care
Rod
Also - The Iphone Dock is nothing new or special either. It's a shame you only discovered it until now? There are tons of different docking stations for Iphones and WM Devices on the market for almost every device. A simple google will yield results.
Hhhmmm, Hey Hotrod, don't you grow suspicious of this guy that has 1 post, and said post is to expose the high virtues of a "new" product that is sure to rock the world...

Yes I suppose it does seem suspicious - "Product pusher" "Advertisement", However, he may also just be very young and not realise what kind of forum he was in. I like to keep an open mind about people; however, I will keep my eye on him so see what his other posts are like (if he ever comes back).
My apologies. I didn't think this was a new product, I just hadn't seen anyone else use it this way. My friends that have iPhones use car chargers and fm transmitters to use their iPhone in their car. I started out doing this, but found that most of the time it was too much trouble on a short trip. I saw one guy online that went so far as to make an RTV rubber mold of his iPod and made his own dock in his car (this was when they first came out).
Thanks,
Chris
That's cool man. I never actually thought of using a docking station in the car before. It would be very conveniant as long as it was secure enough. Pop the device in and then remove it when exiting the car. My set up is relatively simple as well. I have one plugin for power to my device - everyting is transmitted to stereo using the devices bluetooth and Motorola t505 to transmit to FM Stereo of car. No clutter of wires this way.

Bluetooth Car Stereo - JVC KDX50BT

Though I would post this for anyone looking for bluetooth car options. I've been using this deck for the past week and love it. For years I used FM Transmitters, but after breaking/losing/etc several and not loving the sound quality, I bought a deck with auxillary input. That was fine, but still wires everywhere (especially when charging).
I purchased and installed the JVC KDX50BT. It is their entry level bluetooth deck, and does not have a CD player. Thats fine for me. I drive a Jeep and the CD players always end up getting dust inside and stop working after a few years (and I never use them). I ordered from Crutchfield for $100 shipped: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDX50BT/JVC-KD-X50BT.html?tp=5684
In short, I love it. The bluetooth streaming audio sounds great, and although its hard to do an A/B comparison, I believe it is better quality than the old deck with auxillary in. Bass seems to not distort at higher volumes as much as the auxillary in. This would make sense if the stereo itself is doing the digital processing. It also shows the current song information. This is "BT Audio" mode, and will basically stream whatever audio you are currently playing from any app.
It also has Pandora capabilities. This is called "BT Pandora" mode and it will display your current station info. Even better, you can thumbs up or thumbs down a track from the deck itself. When you do this, the Pandora app recognizes this and displays a screen that does not allow user input from the phone. It is kind of annoying as I plan to put in a car mount and wouldn't mind being able to see the album art. On the other hand, I have put in about 3 hours of listening so far (off and on) and haven't had a commercial yet, so I'm not complaining too much! I was going to upgrade Pandora but now I may not need to.
There is also an external microphone you can mount anywhere in your car to use for calls. I haven't used it much but initial reports from my friends are that sound quality for the other party is good.
It isn't completely bug free with my Epic Touch (Running Mijj's Blend ICS right now). Sometimes it will switch over to the Pandora mode in the middle of a song without me telling it to. This is annoying, but it is quick to switch from Pandora mode. It doesn't always display the current song information correctly in BT audio mode, but most of the songs I'm streaming from my phone I don't need to know the title. It does not show song info from Spotify. It also will not display info from my podcast player (beyondpod) but I don't really care about that. The stock music apps seem to work best for song info.
I am guessing many of these issues are with the Bluetooth protocol and the way our phones handle it. It could also be the fact I am using a custom ROM rather than stock. All issues are minor annoyances.
Other pros:
-You can change the colors of the display to pretty much anything you want, and have different schemes for night and day.
-Easy to pair.
-Two USB inputs (front and rear) but if you are using bluetooth, one of these will be taken up by the JVC USB Bluetooth adapter.
-USB inputs are 1.0mA rather than the standard 0.5mA for faster charging. (I still use my car charger as it is positioned better for my needs)
-Radio does seem to have great reception; finding quite a few more stations that my old deck.
Other cons:
-Radio station presets awkward to use... you have to "scroll" through them rather than just hitting button 1-6. I've been playing with the bluetooth too much to really get used to it.
Meh:
-I also have a set of bluetooth headphones. If I am listening to the headphones and get into the Jeep, I have to either turn off the headphones before turning on the stereo, or manually connect in the bluetooth settings menu. As far as I know this is a bluetooth limitation and not the fault of the deck. It would be sweet to have it transfer automatically to the new source when it finds it, but not sure this is possible regardless of the setup.
-There is a JVC app that allows some touch based controls on your phone. I haven't used it much but it does seem to work OK.
All of that aside, the real reason I bought it was for the ease of getting into my Jeep with my phone in my pocket, having the phone automatically connect and begin streaming high quality audio to the stereo within about 30 seconds of the car starting (it takes a moment for the phone to connect). On short drives the phone doesn't even leave my pocket. So far, I couldn't be any happier with the results I am getting, especially for $100.
................And I just found the following deal that gets it down to $81 shipped. That sucks for me, but even at $100 it is a steal!

Nice find. I was just looking at a Sony Deck earlier that does the pandora control. It's a bit more expensive but also lacks a CD Player and has an OLED Screen or whatever.
I have a Sony now and it uses the same wiring harness so would be a quick install for me and I've always loved my one I had now.
The BT Streaming and Pandora Control are what i'm after though.
Just ordered mine few hours ago. I saw it at dealnews.com

Check the reviews of the low end Sony and pioneer Bluetooth decks on Crutchfield... from what I remember they were not recommended. Wiring harness took me 20 mins while watching a movie.

Nice! Wish I had seen the deal before I ordered mine but still no regrets.
When you get yours installed let me know what you think.
alright i'm glad someone else here is using this car stereo. I just installed mine, it's pretty damn amazing. The only problem I have is that the display doesn't show the track information when streaming over bluetooth. Just shows "No Name". Pandora track info shows up fine however. I did a google search and it brought me here. Any ideas what may be wrong? I'm on a EVO 3D btw
I also have a newer JVC deck, same controls as the OP talks about. Mine does have the CD player though. I would like to know what music app ever displays ID3 Tag info. I have never had luck with it other than Pandora.
Edit: JVC deck is a KDA735BT. Love the deck, works well with BT and Pandora. Would love to get ID3 Tags to pass through, perferably from Google Music but would be interested in any music player that has worked in this situation for someone. CDMA Galaxy Nexus.

Seriously looking at getting one of these.
Can anyone tell me how good the BT range is? Reason I ask is that often my daughter who is sat in the back of the car will use grab my Aux-In lead and play music from her phone. It would be great if the range was great enough to allow it to stream from her phone sat in the back of the car - no fights about stretching the cable!
I know to some extent it depends on the phones BT capabilities and bods in the car etc etc. But if someone could confirm it works from the rear seats or even further it would be very helpful.
Cheers.
The one I posted is bluetooth 2.0, 10m range via standard. On my deck I have gotten out to get gas with phone still in pocket, never missed a beat.

Hmmm, this is strange. Google Music shows the ID3 tags for me. I have noticed a handful of times that it does not update after a track change, but I'd say less than 10% of the time. I'm using an ICS based rom on my epic touch.
Have you tried using the JVC app? I don't use it but it might be worth a shot.
Edit: I just ordered a GSM Galaxy Nexus and will be switching over to prepaid, so I'll let you know if it works with that phone.

Thank you, just let me know what you find out when you get the GN, curious if it works for you.
First i bought this JVC KDR530 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+5...back/4005163.p?id=1218447374174&skuId=4005163 and loved it,it was $89 at best buy.I ended up returning it because it would not work with Epic over usb and required separate bluetooth adapter.
I returned it and decided to try Pioneer DEH-6300UB http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Pioneer...back/1752039.p?id=1218289372932&skuId=1752039 ,it was POS,buttons looked like they was gonna fall off any minute now and menus and sound was nowhere near JVC,plus it would not connect to my Epic over usb.
Then i wanted this JVC KDHDR71BT(same as KDX80BT but with cd) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+5...Deck/4888181.p?id=1218572403189&skuId=4888181 because it said on the box that its compatible with not only iphone but blackberry and android but it was sold out at best buy.
So after days of research i finally ended up getting this Kenwood http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113BT852HD/Kenwood-KDC-BT852HD.html?tp=5684#customer-reviews-tab for $239(yeah i know more then double as JVC,lol) but man it was worth it.
The reason i went with Kenwood because i read that JVC and Kenwood merged together, sense i loved first JVC i thought that i would get same quality from Kenwood and i did.
To make it short,it still doesn't play music from my Epic over usb but only charges the phone. But thats ok because it plays it over bluetooth and i can control my Epic from Kenwood(switch tracks, answer phone, display album info and more). Its real pretty to look at, a lot of options, same great quality as JVC(and not a pos like Pioneer),and sound is definitely superb(better than JVC but its in another price range,im sure that JVC in this price range be just as good).
If you want good solid built quality and great sound go with JVC or Kenwood because they are same company. If you want higher end models go with JVC Arsenal or Kenwood Excelon series.Their cheaper models are solid but don't pack as many features and sound is warmer on higher end models.
From my experience Pioneer's quality is not what it used to be(they still heve solid speakers) and i heard the same about Alpines.I cant comment on Sony, they used to be pos but i think they improved lately.
I say that JVC and Kenwood get you best value for you money from my experience.
Oh and i recommend Buying from Crutchfiled because you get free wiring and dash kit and end up saving $40,i wish i knew that before i bought them from best buy.And their tech support actually know what they talking about-which is rare these days, and it only took 3 days for my shipment to arrive.

Completely agree about Crutchfield, but I did want to mention that for mine, it wasn't expensive enough apparently to qualify for free wiring and dash kit. But said items were cheap enough, and they shipped to Hawaii for free, so I'm not complaining. I didn't need to call their tech support as they included very detailed instructions (and I'd installed on my vehicle previously) but I have heard nothing but great things.

Yeah my shipping was free to new york too.I think you need to spend over $120 to get free wiring and dashkit.
But look at it this way:If you go to best buy and spend $80 on mediocre stereo and spend another $40 on dashkit and wires which totals $120,you might as well spend $120 on crutchfield and get better stereo and get free dashkit, wires, detailed instructions and free shipping.
After I connected my kenwood my radio was playing fine but I had no sound from cd's.I thought I had a defective unit.So I called their tech support, guy told me that on chryslers I need to hook up onr wire differently and my cd's started playing.Try to get that from bestbuy or wallmart, they will tell you **** like push reset button, lol.I think im about to buy all my stereo equimpment fro them, plus their prices are same as other places if not cheaprr.
I bought this deck yesterday at Best Buy. I'm loving it so far. Apparently it's a hell of a deal as it was their last one in stock. Was gonna buy it at electronic express so I could get my 10% off, but they were sold out. Here's a pic in my mk2 Jetta diesel

So how is your ID3 trading with ICS working? Are you streaming through Google music or playing cached music or actual mp3s on your phone? Just curious, might try to sync some actual mp3s to the phone instead of streaming or cached music.

Native Android car stereo + Tablet = Damn this is sexy!!

Absolutely sick! I havne't seen it for sale yet, hopefully we'll see it soon and hopefully not running anything older than ICS.
That looks pretty sweet. Wish it wasn't flip out though. They need to just make an amp/tuner with a mhl input for audio/video. A couple of audio video outputs and a micro SD card slot so you can load movies or music files to it from your android device. It could have a screen or just a gooseneck for the driver to control.

I'd like if the deck could be controlled via said app on any Android tablet running Android 3.0+, for example. I'd prefer a wired setup myself due to SQ concerns
I would be more interested in an amalgamation of a car stereo and the lapdock idea from the Atrix that uses replaceable "docks" for the docking area to let you just dock your Android phone into it. Full internet acess that way, stream audio from any android app, big touchscreen. Much nicer than some crappy tablet that clicks into a standard car stereo.
I was hoping that they would have come out that phone I saw a while back that could dock into the back of a tablet, a laptop and a controller to use like a PSP. I had the transformer prime and the tablet was great but it only was good with wifi and I don't see paying for a separate data plan for a 3g tablet. If they cant get FM working on the SGS3 than all I'd need is a 7" monitor with an hdmi input and somehow get audio to a 5 channel amp....one day I guess. But that deck is a step in the right direction. Wonder if it is specific to 1 tablet and if it has 3g capability.
I refuse to buy another car stereo of any type, until they start shipping with APT-X HD-quality blueooth that our SIII's support.
I'd be too tempted to play with that tablet when driving and it would end in my demise.

Car stereos are dead anyway.... Just get a tablet, mount it, and run the audio off to your amps... Good to go with a big fat touch screen with built in navi, mp3 player, xm radio, blah blah blah blah.

You've got me wondering about this. I never use the CD player in my car stereo anymore. Or the radio.
And I think you're on the right track with this. Are there any double-din sized tablets out there? I'll have to google this later.
Just tether the tablet to your cell's data plan and you're flying. Hmm.

Android Car Device
There is an Android 2.2 800Mhz 256MB 8GB 6,2" TFT CAR DVD on sale (800 USD to door in Russia) that I have bought recently and after some software installations it does deliver what I have wanted to have in the car.
Nevertheless there are a few major complaints to its performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx53a6N7_ws
As well there are several other minor things that would be great to change if possible.
If there is someone interested and able to cook a custom ROM for this device - I can send this device for free as a gift and for experiments. We really want a good ROM for this CA-Fi Car Stereo and the guy's in China don't seem caring enough.
I will check this thread once in a while and provide contact details for anyone interested in developing this device. It is very close to being a great thing for a CAR!
I have updated my email in the XDA profile so you can as well use this option to contact me.
PS
I Have a ROM update file (192MB) that came from the device vendor (dealer). I can send it out for revision.
The way to install this rom on the car stereo is to extract files to the root of a microSD card, insert it, switch off the device, then, while holding the screen tapped, power on – the device starts an install mode. When finished it asks for screen calibration and restarts with a new rom as after a hard reset (erases everything).

Is HDMI output possible

Can anyone tell me if the next Nexus 5x can support HDMI output one way or another. Still contemplating this phone or OP2 or G4Plus. That's another debate. I sometimes visit my mother who doesn't have much up to date media. So when we watch movies I bring my laptop and we watch that on the TV. Back in 2009-2011 I used to plug my iPhone 3gs and 4 straight into the TV and watch Netflix or a saved movie. Life was easy, lol. Apple became to pricey so I've been in android the last 4 years and miss some of the ease. So with development can it be done or some type of way to watch movies from my phone to a modern TV. Chromecast just hasn't been my cup of tea. App needs another app to do certain things. At one time I was using 4-5 apps supporting Chromecast just for rare occasions. Thanks in advance

I played some tunes on it to see how it sounded. The sound suuuccckkksss. I wasn't expecting much, but I definitely wasn't expecting it to be that bad... My $10 AUX speaker that I used before I bought an Anker sounded WAY better. They really needed to make it sound decent at least, or put an AUX input, or even allow Bluetooth to connect and play music to Bluetooth speakers. The music piece is a total fail.
It's otherwise kind of cool. Outside of certain questions we ask it, I'm still trying to find its use in my home though.

Other than with music, how does it compare to the original Google home? Is spoken voice clear and loud? Microphones good?

I can't compare it to a full sized home, never had a chance to try one out.
The voice IS very clear though. And you can set it from pretty quiet to super loud. Like, out of the box, it woke up one of my kids loud lol... You can tell it to turn the volume down, or you can tap on one of the sides. As for the mic, it hears me even from another room that's not directly attached, so, I would say it's pretty good too.
I got the Home Mini the same day as my phone - so far it's been good. I can turn on the TV and do a few other things around the house without having to touch my phone. Ours in in the kitchen so it's quite handy for asking today's weather, asking what's on today and even putting music on the home theatre while I'm cooking.
Maybe I went into this from a different angle to everyone else. I wasn't expecting much and for free, it's kinda handy.
My kids love playing the trivia games you can access through it. Just say "Hey Google Abracadabra"

Yeah, definitely not complaining since it's free! And my oldest def gets the most use out of it. He loves the thing. We haven't even really tried the kids games or trivia yet either. He'll be sitting in front of it all day after he figures out if can do that lol.
The only shortcomings really for this thing are the speaker quality and the lack of Bluetooth streaming. The former is just bad, but, honestly I wasn't expecting much there. It COULD however have included an AUX. The Bluetooth streaming I would think will come eventually though. Anyway, happy either way!

Really the Google Home Mini is more like a smart home voice controller that happens to have an okay speaker good enough for voice. I plan on getting a Chromecast audio to my sound system and use the Mini to control it.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
My 2 XL shipped on Oct 25th, and I got the Google Mini code and instructions yesterday Saturday, Nov 18th.
A few clicks and it'll be here Tuesday evening!
Anyone here, who ordered from German Playstore, has received the code from Home Mini?
I ordered 2 pixels this year. Should I be getting 2 of the homes as well? I only got the promo email for 1, but the order was delayed and shipped separately, so I don't know if it's just not processed yet.
Got mine the other day. Have have my phone just under a month.
Got mine... No clue what to do with it lol
