I have had an iPhone for the past year, and couldn't be happier. However, I recently came across an idea that makes a huge difference in how you use your iPhone, and only costs $39.

Does not seem like a big deal, but I bought one of these docks for my phone, a car adapter, and a stereo cord, and mounted them in my car. Now, I just sit down, set the phone in the dock, and my music starts playing through the speakers. The phone starts charging. So, I spend a lot more time using the phone because its not a hastle to hook it up.

Also - The Iphone Dock is nothing new or special either. It's a shame you only discovered it until now? There are tons of different docking stations for Iphones and WM Devices on the market for almost every device. A simple google will yield results.

Yes I suppose it does seem suspicious - "Product pusher" "Advertisement", However, he may also just be very young and not realise what kind of forum he was in. I like to keep an open mind about people; however, I will keep my eye on him so see what his other posts are like (if he ever comes back).
My apologies. I didn't think this was a new product, I just hadn't seen anyone else use it this way. My friends that have iPhones use car chargers and fm transmitters to use their iPhone in their car. I started out doing this, but found that most of the time it was too much trouble on a short trip. I saw one guy online that went so far as to make an RTV rubber mold of his iPod and made his own dock in his car (this was when they first came out).

That's cool man. I never actually thought of using a docking station in the car before. It would be very conveniant as long as it was secure enough. Pop the device in and then remove it when exiting the car. My set up is relatively simple as well. I have one plugin for power to my device - everyting is transmitted to stereo using the devices bluetooth and Motorola t505 to transmit to FM Stereo of car. No clutter of wires this way.

I'm NOT talkin about a car dock, or a charging/syncing dock or just external speakers that plug into the headphone port...
I mean a dock like the millions of them that are available for the iPhone that is an actual stereo where the phone docks into it and charges/plays music at the same time..
I have looked everywhere and cant find one.. seems like the only thing that the iPhone has that my Evo doesnt that I actually want

You're not going to find anything made specifically for the EVO. The best bet is to find a universal one that has USB charging capabilities. I can't recall one off the top of my head but I'm sure they are out there.
Yeah, I really wasnt expecting to find an "EVO specific" one but I cant even find a universal one that's not a complete piece of crap that is so inconvenient to use that it's not worth it...
Am I the only one that wants one of these or what? There has to be a bir market for a really good universal one that non-iPhone users can buy... Maybe I'm missing something

I want one of these. I am actually in the process of making one out of wood. I am thinking of shaping it like a regular dock, and using a good acoustical wood. Got the idea from here.
I am thinking this would work great. Maybe take a charger and run it up so that you can plug it in, and use the acoustics of the wood to amplify the sound. Just a thought.
So there are no MicroUSB docks anywhere??

I had seen one of these back a while ago but I guess I just forgot about it... That does seem like the best option. I've never used bluetooth to stream music but I assume it works well and will play with music on my SDcard as well as Slacker and the like?

Absolutely. I have a set of bluetooth headphones that are really sweet and i use them with pandora, music app, audiogalaxy etc...
My wife was asking this just the other day. She hates plugging in to the ear phone jack. I might try that bluetooth receiver idea.

I used the FIPO for quite a while (till I lost it) I think there was a guy on there that was selling them for cheap (around $10 IIRC), but it worked flawlessly every time and the sound quality was not bad at all....

The problem is the HDMI out: there is no "dock" connector, just USB (which IS host capable, somewhere on that chip) and the HDMI connector.
HDMI encodes the audio into blank space of the video stream, so you need signal processing to seperate the two: that's too close to the DO NOT CROSS line for manufacturers. There aren't many products that do that (right now), and I don't know if there will be. However I found this one in my travels:

Is the only thing I can find that comes close to an audio extractor for HDMI. And it has an extra 3 inputs!
So you could get the HDMI dock, the HDMI adapter cable, this doodad, a receiver (or a digital audio to analog converter and THEN to a receiver), and then go out to your speakers. Of course that assumes the software/firmware on the EVO can just play audio out that end: because it is HDMI you would have to have a video signal of some kind going down the wire to activate the link. I suspect that last part would be the easiest part. Though, as developers would probably love something like this too.
Yet another case of DRM being a pain in the ass. in this case, we can thank Intel for being able and willing to sue companies into the ground for not following the HDMI rules.
One final note: if there is HDMI plugged in, all other audio stops (ie bluetooth, headphone jack and builtin speaker). I have not tested this, but this is what HTC said on their tech support forum when I asked.

Does not seem to be vaporware, and on the first link, is $128, which is a steal coming from the pro A/V market. Kinda high for us regular consumers, but for that market it's almost free.

The one thing I just do not understand is the decision or lack of decision to utilize a dock port system. It's is maddening to have to plug in mUSB instead of clicking in and moving along.
From a Dev. standpoint, is this because they have to allow so many different manufacturers to make devices? Why not make it part of their 'spec.'
No alarm clocks, no cool docks for my stereo, no cool docks for my car, no cool dock for the back of headrests in my car, wth.
It's not a game stopper for me but it really makes me think that being a iClone is just easier.

I hear you. I love the dock for my ZuneHD which allows me to use it as anything you list. I was a little surprised to see that my WP7 didn't have a dock port at all.

I never handled a Zune so I had no idea it had a dock, but now I am even more shocked. I mean does anyone at MS ever walk into Costco and see all the accessories flying off the shevles for iphone...haha, so lame. I can only laugh.

to be honest, miniusb cables are everywhere. Everybody owns one, and so many devices on the market use them. I charge my DS, my phone, and my bluetooth all with the same adapter... I would have been pissed had I been required to buy a special cable for work, my car, and my home. I have chargers in like 7 different locations now, and when I don't, the person next to me has a miniusb.
Docks can work fine with mini USB. However, as the OP stated, the position of the port is not fixed and hence there can be no standardized dock. nevertheless, if OS supports it, OEMs will jump in and release docks. just like some docks are available for android.
As of present, the OS doesnot offer any special behavior if dock is connected. Nevertheless, I hope mango brings in API's to allow for softwares to be triggered on USB connections, just like on android. Alarm clocks, car dock apps will follow.
But the android docks aren't universal, which is what I think he's referring to... Some connect at the bottom, some at the top, others on the side... I see this coming eventually though to WP7... But as far as a standardized Apple style dock, it would be a pain in the ass and I wouldn't want it to be honest.

Just curious, there aren't any ipod accessories that you would like to just click into?
Docking into my car requires two hands and two cables, very lame and much slower than my other car and wife's iphone, one click, one hand and it starts playing. Plug into microUSB with the cable and the phone simply charges, you still need to tap the music player, etc.
Alarm clocks, stereo docks and car docks are easily what I want most as well as those boomboxes with docks, so nice...not to mention how many parties you go to with ipod docks all around...
I will tell you though, it's microUSB and not mini, making it a different cable than BB, HTC and others. The cables can be bought in bulk, very cheaply as can the ipod USB cables, either way a change was required and new cables needed to be purchased.
There is no way they could have forced the manufacturers to agree on a port and the manufacturers would have issues fitting the port into their designs so maybe you are right...someday...

I have a ZuneHD. Let me tell you that the reason no manufacturer is interested in a docking system is that NO retailers want to stock any dock other than iPhon/iPod docks. When was the last time you see a Zune dock being sold in Costco? Never. And Zune had this docking system for as long as there is Zune. The eco-system is just not there for anything non-iPod.
Then you lose the universal aspect of the entire world using mini USB, but a phone specific dock would be nice.. I just wouldn't want something other than a mini USB

miniUSB ports are dead. All the new phones and devices use microUSB ports. EU already mandated all future cell phones must use microUSB port as charge port.
good point. micro USB port should be at the bottom as part of the chassis requirement. Maybe they will require that in the future.

The official desktop dock features a 3.5mm line out that should allow exactly for what you are thinking of.
Unfortunately early reports point put that the output of that line out is so weak that it's utterly unable to feed any amp due to a very low voltage.
Actually this and only this is the reason why i have not purchased the Note and i still stick to my iPhone. I love the ubiquty of the iPhone line out and speaker aftermarket.

Eh? I have a logitech dock I bought for my rubbish iPhone. I use a cable jive converter and my note dock and it blasts out louder than my iPhone ever did. Buy a 5mm lead and go down the shops and try out some of the docks or the wireless systems

I'm afraid that double amping is not the purest way to pump put music off any device. That's why a line out is a must in my book

The day Android gets right the speaker dock aftermarket then i will switch from iPhone.
To me getting it right is having a wired speaker dock aftermarket. I don't trust the Bluetooth A2DP profile the most Android devices use (Low encoding SBC protocol). And amping the headphone out is like pouring Chanel No. 5 over a pig. It smells better but the scent is still lousy.
I think that the very fact that there is not a serious speaker dock aftermarket for Android devices shows clearly that these devices are hardware lacking for that purpose and that's why most companies do not spend money on devising products because the final quality is handicapped from the very beginning cause there is no clean line out built in (As opposed to iPhones whose line out allow for very good sounding speaker docks).
I think the main culprit is the choice of a miniusb out instead of a 30 Pin connector like iPhones or Galaxy Tabs. That might be the limiting factor. Aside from the obvious lack of focus in the audio department that Android shows (i.e. Still no true gapless playback out of the box). And this lack of focus is shared by Windows Phone 7 to Apple delight (since most music lovers stick to them just for this very reason).

It would be great if manufacturers exploit the use of MHL to send digital audio to these speaker docks and since MHL requires power to operate, the dock will power it.
Yeah. The DHL has potential but the speaker dock would need a built in DAC which will make the thing more expensive and bulky.
But as it stands now DHL is the only serious wired solution that i see for music lovers like me which find great the ability of docking the iPhone on a Logitec portable speaker dock that you can take almost anywhere (hotels, garden kitchen, even the toilet
This time around i thought that Samsung had got it right with the line out of the desktop dock but unfortunately it seems to work pretty bad (low voltage and interference when the dock is charging the Note).

For now I decided to [recently] settle on a Phillips Fidelio AS351 as my drop in dock, and it actually surpassed my expectations for an A2DP connected dock. It's not the worlds best sound, but much better than I had expected. You could always grab one of them if you wanted.
Now, that adapter.
I made a post on the GSII forums about how to do this but have yet to get around to making one as such. It'd be similar to how this gent made his, without the actual auxiliary cable sticking out. Everything would go through the micro USB connection.

I think that any Note owner who happens to have iPod/iPhone speaker docks would buy a line out dock.
In my particular case is not only that i would buy the line out dock but i would buy the Note as well. I have not purchased it for this whole speaker dock (lack of quality connectivity) issue.
How is the A2DP Bluetooth profile in the Galaxy Note ? Does it use the awful sbc profile or it does use mp3/aac direct stream (as the iPhone and Nokias do) ?
The work of the dutch folk is impressive but unfortunately he is getting amped audio from the headphone out to get it amped again by the speaker dock: double amping is a no go for quality low level sounds.
Thus that the Note would have a built in line out thru the microusb would be a must. It seems that actually the Note can output audio thru the microusb (Judging from the official desktop dock) but users have reported that the signal is very weak and it renders the line out almost unusable. Quite sad taking into account how good is this device in almost every other area.
Android and manufacturers should enforce a hardware line out standard that would allow for an aftermarket of speaker docks as gorgeous as the Apple one.

Fair enough. I've already got an iOS dock and I know others do, so that was a random tidbit about that.
As for the quality, I couldn't tell you to be honest. It sounds far better than any A2DP device I've used so I'm assuming it uses the second. However this could be partly due to the dock itself.
Now for the audio out, in one of my links I refer to that very fact. I've ordered some parts to see about actually making an iOS dock adapter to make use of the line out, so we'll see what happens.

Are you saying the Samsung Galaxy Note A2DP streaming is a quality one that allows for a decent audio at high volumes without the typical SBC profile cracking noises and breaking high end ?
If that was the case then just a Logitech Bluetooth adapter could do the trick for quite a while and the Note would turn to a go in my book since this is the only issue that it's holding me back.

I only get distortion on the dead rare occaision, really only due to the limited bandwidth during some songs that have a lot going on. Otherwise you wouldn't really believe it were over Bluetooth. Don't take my word for it, see if you can get your hands on one. Hell, a GSII should work as they've got the same internals.

The only Bluetooth fed sound system that i've heard yet that i'd might be close to take for a wired system is my JVC AVX-44 when it pumps out when fed via Bluetooth by my iPhone. Anyway i've listened to very few Bluetooth devices.
But if the Note A2DP is close to that i might jump in. Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Is in this realm where i find hard to let go of the iPhone. That's how good it is sound wise. You need a dedicated player amped with a very good portable amp to catch up with the iPhone headphone outwhich i deem as a unique piece of engineering.
Anybody who has paired an iPhone with a multidriver iem (Westone UM3x, Shure SE535...) may understand this last hurdle standing between me and the gorgeous Note.

Understandable. I personally would have never used Bluetooth for music playback but the convenience when paired with the dock is great. I was skeptical and I'm still debating on keeping it. I probably will because it makes a great portable dock for my current phone.
As for the audio part, if you use an iPhone as your primary portable media player you aught to be reasonably content with the Note in terms of SQ. I've used it and a Clip+ with a pair of SE215s and HD 25-1 IIs and I'd say they're just about on par.
I wish I had the money to sink into a pair of UM3s. I did luck out with a pair of K702s for home listening on the way however. Pretty stoked about that.

I've done some reading and found that ICS still doesn't support audio over USB (unless it is saved on your phone), but the Nook does. Anyone know of a kernel that supports this feature?
Also, if this is something you are interested in seeing added to ICS or Android in general please go to the link below and star the issue.

I thought more xda members would want this feature. i really feel like this is a feature that could give android an extra push. wouldnt it be great to hook up your phone your car with usb to play google music instead of using an ipod.
I know I could use the headphone jack, but then you're forced to use the phone to change track versus using using your radio. I worked in car audio for about 5 years and one of the biggest selling points for radios was when you could control your ipod or iphone with your radio buttons instead of having to fumble with the iphone/ipod (and dont forget you wouldnt have to worry about battery life). With most radios offering USB ports I feel like this could be achieved by fixing the kernel.
My ipod is on its last leg and im trying to avoid buying a new one (cant support a lawsuit crazy company), so that's what is causing this sudden desire. Sorry for the rant.
I'm designing a dock for the N7v2 for use in a car. It will have Qi wireless charging and Bluetooth audio receiver, with a standard 3.5mm audio output. It should be compatible with most cases.
I am also currently designing a mounting method that should be close to universal between different cars, and should not fall off like most other docks in the market.
I designed one for the N7v1 using the Pogo pins, and I can never go back to not having a dock for my tablet in my car. It's amazing the difference it made for me.
I want to know a couple things.Please reply with the following template:
1. Would you want a dock like this?
2. How much do you expect to pay for it?

Sounds like a great idea. Do you have any links showing your work with N7v1? Heck, I may be interested in that version since the v1 tablet can be had for cheap these days and is more than capable for the limited functions needed in a car. At any rate:
1. yes, would be interested
2. no idea what a fair price would be, but $50-$100 seems like a fair ballpark
I would think very carefully why you need a wireless charger in a car.
Heat kills batteries; tablets in cars get hot. Why add heat to your woes?
The tablet is likely to be busy playing music and navigating, often in full sunlight. Why add to the heating problems by using a wireless charger when a 5v cord charger attached to the car supply will do the trick?
The wireless car mount/charger iterations for the Nexus 4 were a failure, I recall.

I've attached 4 pictures of the dock I made for the first Nexus 7. You'll notice that it inst exactly a dock you can put in just any car. I realized I made a little too rugged... and big!

Well, that's why I don't leave the tablet in the car, I keep it with me. While I'm in the car, if it's hot out I will have the A/C on anyways, so heat has not been an issue.
Most of my broken devices are dead because the USB port broke because of wear and tear. One of the points of this dock is to reduce that. Plugging in a device everytime I get in the car is partly to blame for such failures. I would have used Pogo Pins, like with the first Nexus 7, but they don't exist on the second.

my name is joseph and i am new to this website. I am also new to the whole rooting phones as well as i am learning the basics of computer science-- os, rom, ram, eprom, android, custom roms.....etc.
I honestly have no idea what i am looking to read and study up on so if you have any ideas than please let me know so i can educate myself. I end goal is to be a program developer.

Look at active Brodit car mounts - say for a Nexus 4. There the device is supported and aligned as it glides onto or off the USB. There is no possibility of twisting or yawing.
I think your proposal maybe over-kill - simplest solutions are always best IMHO. A guy in the Nexus 4 forum came to no good end and had a lot of unhappy 'subscribers'. Just saying.

I would normally agree. I was hoping to make one that doesnt require a case to be removed to use. I designed my previous dock the way you describe (except it used the Pogo pins on the side), but I always had to remove the case and eventually the first case was showing signs of damage from being removed so often.
My hope is that the base platform of the dock I want to build will be compatible with multiple models of smartphones and tablets that are Qi capable. That'll require a lot more planning, but may be worth it.

Well if you're set on the route you've described; ... I see you've picked up on the Peltier pump in another thread. Credit me somewhere if you make it!
But I might consider an approach made by Philips in an Android Bluetooth Speaker and dock. The adjustment for USB and its placement on an edge, plus 180 degree rotation needed for some models, was catered for physically. A much cheaper approach which copes with tablets and phones!

I think I will use a Peltier pump. And yes, I'll make sure you get credit for that idea I'll mount the transmitting coil onto the cold side (probably with a layer of copper in between, we'll try several things) and have the hot side of the pump mounted to the aluminum/sheet metal of the back plate (probably with thermal paste as well). I'll have the pump on a simple thermostat. Good thing I have an EE helping me with this project
Hopefully the final product won't need a Peltier pump, but I will definitely have it in the prototype.

I haven't had very good experiences with using that type of dock The results of daily use tend to be USB ports that are stretched and loose. At least that's how it has been in my experience.

Don't forget to talk to your EE about eddy current loses in any conductors (copper, aluminium) you have nearby to your induction coil.
Interesting read, but with the cooler this is going to be a very expensive dock. Without it, look to Canada for your market.
I rigged up one for my Nexus 4 last Winter. Based on some testing, I used the most efficient charger I could find for that phone (the LG wcp-700). It worked very well... until late spring when the mercury broke 70. To make a long story short, I pulled it last month as the phone was getting too hot. This in a suv with a 4 liter v6 with plenty of air conditioning, front and rear.
Without the cooler, the tablet needs to be located directly in front of a vent, or even in moderate climates the unit will get hot enough to significantly reduce charging current.
One more thing to consider... the Nexus 7 is polarized vertically. This means that it is invisible in landscape orientation for anyone wearing polarized driving glasses, which I am willing to bet is a large percentage of your prospective market (tech savvy, auto enthusiasts). Most displays designed for vehicles are polarized at 45°, making this not such an issue.
While the tinkerer, software developer, and electronic geek in me wanted a fully integrated tablet in my truck, I soon came to the conclusion that it was simply not practical. What is really needed is a properly done appRadio, where a head unit can mirror the display of a mobile device (ideally wirelessly - miracast, etc.) with a control link set up to pass touches on the head unit back to the mobile device. We're about 30% there now, but a lack of standards, and major players wanting proprietary solutions is a problem.
I wish you much success with your endeavor, but just wanted to share my experience and feelings that this will not be all that marketable a product.
The problems you had with the nexus 4 does not necessarily effect the nexus 7. The nexus 4 was pretty terrible at wireless charging. I had a car setup with a qi charger with the lumia 920 and it worked great even in hot weather. I am not saying the nexus 7 will work, but it might.

What makes you say that? I ask as I have seen relatively similar performance with both the N7 and N4. The tricky thing about the N4 is that the coil is not centered in the vertical dimension, so for folks making the assumption that it is, there will be quite a bit of offset.

I say that because of all the issues people had with car docks. It also had issues with the dt-900 qi chargers when it shouldn't have. It heated up excessively with most chargers.
I wonder if there will be an Official dock that lets you:
1. Charge
2. Expand TV HDMI out
3. USB port for Hard drive access
I really want the Nexus & FHD to be a Home entertainment player...may be a remote/ Or Kinect like gesture control app built in with the dock
Hope this comes true...it will be the best Combo for a home unit!
