Screen stays off after/during call - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've made a few phone calls and when i pull the phone away from my head to look up a contact or go to speaker phone, the screen stays black. It's happened every time and i have to hit the power button twice to get the screen to come back on again. Anyone else having this issue?

Do you have a Spigen Tempered Glass Screen Protector installed on your phone? Or any screen protector that covers the proximity sensor?

Yup, totally do! I forgot to search for "proximity sensor". Duh, sorry about that.

Just activated my Nexus 5X is this is driving me crazy. I have a screen protector, but that shouldn't be an issue.
Seen here that's this is an issue with Android 6 - wondering why they haven't fixed it with 6.0.1 etc

If the screen protector is covering the proximity sensor you will experience this issue.

I'm having this issue as well. No screen protector.

Screen Protector Tip

Just a heads up, when buying a screen protector, make sure the sensor is uncovered. I see a lot of screen protectors that covers the sensor, and that will definitely cause all sorts of issues with the proximity sensor!
Just to wake this thread up, I finally put my Reallook on that does cover camera and sensors and I have no issues with it. I've actually never had a problem with this brand.

I'll second this. I had a screen protector from Skinomi that wasn't cut right. I figured, what the heck - its clear, just like the glass beneath it, right?
Every time I made a call, the screen shut off as if I had the phone to my ear and activated the prox sensor. Ripped that screen protector off, and everything was fine.

Anyone for Fire Phone Screen Protectors?

Hmm.. They are getting really popular and I guess you've got to go with one even if it does have Gorilla Glass it still not gonna take a drop directly to the screen. Obviously theres the question of camera results changing, opacity, fitting, responsiveness, cut outs etc and now even the face sensors are a brand new issue.
I've been keeping an eye on amazon and theres plenty around just a case of searching through and seeing who is considering what!
Thickness must be an issue when considering whether the glass will affect the responsiveness of the screen or sensors, I was just on Facebook and spotted that Orzly have one at 0.24 mm thickness.
Haven't had a chance to use any on the device yet but I'll repost here when I have.
Any recommendations?
Spartan Tempered Glass
I purchased a couple of the Spartan Tempered Glass screen protectors from Xtreme Guard, @ ~$4 a piece. While they looked real nice on the phone they had the side effect of triggering the proximity sensor. I had to take it off to make the device usable as a phone... The second you begin a call the screen goes black, it made it impossible to hang up or use the dial pad.
Not sure if there is any setting to adjust the proximity sensor, I couldn't find anything.

For $2, this is am excellent glass screen protector as good as any other. As with most glass screen protectors for this phone, the proximity sensor is triggered, so it's impossible to hang up calls. You can attempt to escape the call using buttons.

this protector seems to be the best available right now. It comes with a proximity Sensor window.
Picked up this Moshi screen protector for $5 at the local AT&T store:
https://www.att.com/accessories/screen-protectors/moshi-anti-glareanti-fingerprint-ivisor-screen-protector-amazon-fire-phone.html#sku=sku7270242
Currently selling for $15 at Amazon. Easy to install and working well so far.
There were still a few cases available at the AT&T store, too, more that shown as available through the online site.

I've also made the mistake of getting a Spartan tempered glass screen protector from XtremeGuard. I'm having the same issues with the proximity sensors. Screen off and unusable in calls. The home button can't wake the phone up anymore. I had to remove it. Wasted $6.
It seems that the majority of screen protectors being sold lack a hole for the proximity sensor. I only have experience with matte screen protectors but I gather this is an issue with the clear/glossy protectors as well. On one protector I used a razor to cut out a hole but then opted for the hole puncher. One properly placed hole punch worked well, though the border of the cut did not adhere well to the surface of the glass. I recommend having that hole punch to deal with the proximity sensor issue.
I purchased a glass screen protector by Volt on Amazon. It works flawlessly. Highly recommended.
Just search Amazon for "volt fire phone screen protector" and it should be the first result.

I have the same screen protector, it works pretty good, except I notice it sometimes doesn't recognize scrolling on webpages or when I try to flick down the menu system. I believe Xtremeguard has some too, I ordered 1 as a backup but I haven't tried to dry fit it. LOL it was only 2 dollars after discount.

I haven't had the same experience. Functionality-wise, it works the same as not having a screen protector at all. I guess YMMV. I wouldn't mind a back up for $2 though LOL.

oh, I did a dry fit on the Xtremeguard Spartan version, it appears to fit perfectly. There's a cut out for the front-facing camera, speaker and the home button. linky. Every now and then they'll be 80% or 90% off coupons
I've had a lot of success with their version, and I like it.

I wonder if they finally changed their screen protector design. I bought the same one and it would trigger my proximity sensor. If you go back to page 1 of this very thread you'll see I'm not alone. I've tried contacting XtremeGuard twice on the matter but they are ignoring my emails. I'm out $6. They're out a customer (this having been like the 10th screen protector I buy from them).

The Volt screen protector I have has a cutout for the proximity sensor. No issues at all.
Also recommend volt screen protector
I used iCarez protector which caused black screen with my phone. After replacing it with Volt glass protector the black screen is gone. I am very happy with the Volt protector. It also feels like the original glass screen.
I always use iCarez screen protectors. I have a review on my website six10webdesign com / reviews. They are so easy to install and look great!

Question regarding Spigen Screen Protector GLAS.tR NANO SLIM

I'm kinna interested to have this screen protector : http://www.spigen.com/brands/google/nexus-5/nexus-5-screen-protector-glas-tr-nano-slim.html
I was wondering
1. Is there any possibility that this type screen protector may scratch my device screen? As it is made of glass material too.
2. Is it possible to tear it off in the future, without leaving any mark and scratches on my device screen? As in the future, I might feel like I may not want to have a screen protector on my screen. Or, I would like to change a new screen protector.
3. Also, it seems that this screen protector doesn't have a cut-off hole for front camera and other sensors. Will it affect the quality of front camera, and other sensors?
Thanks.
Cheok
1. The back is adhesive... The most its going to do is leave some sort of residue like duct on glass as an extreme example.
2. Yes it can come off. This is a screen protector... Not a screen damager. I think you are misunderstanding the point of it.
3. No, front camera quality is not reduced.
I had the exact same one and it literally let me down like massively. Started getting random air bubbles in it, which were impossible to get rid of without taking the damn thing off. Been running naked since then.
I have this screen protector and I haven't had any problems at all. It has micro scratches on the screen protector but my screen should be just fine.

LG G4 Screen turning Off

Hi I have the LG G4 H815 Unlocked version and I have a 9H tempered glass protector on it, my question which I hope someone can answer is when I get phone calls or even make calls, the screen goes off and I am unable to get it back on to end the call, even the power button on the back doesn't turn it on so I am unable to use the touchscreen during calls or end the call.
Could it be the tempered glass, I have a Genuine G4 Quick Circle case on it also. I can't remember if it did this prior to me putting on the tempered glass but I don't want to take it off incase it doesn't fix the issue and I have wasted my Tempered Glass!
Any help would be appreciated.
I'm also having the same issue, the screen just refused to come back on after a call.
Using H815 TWN 10B , with tempered glass, no case.

Another member has just advised that it is the Tempered Screen Protector that is causing the issue, it is blocking the proximity sensor, you can get tempered glass screen protectors that has a cut out for the proximity sensor, mine doesn't have, but I have just looked on EBay and they are there so I am ordering one of these. Apparently when the tempered glass covers the proximity sensor it gives a mirror effect to it and turns it off when put up to face and it's almost impossible to get it back on during calls etc. Hope this helps.
Thanks
It could be the glass but that proximity sensor is a bit nuts... I use my phone whilst in bed under blankets and this phone will turn the screen off and when i turn it on immediately it turns off... I'll be doing this on off maybe five times then it turns the screen on.... My Note 4 never did that and it has a tempered glass too. Was hoping to buy the glass too month end.

You should check if the screenprotector has a cutout left from the earpiece outletthat keeps the front camera, proximity sensor and light sensor uncovered.

Its happened to me when I had my first glass screen protector 2 months ago. Its covered the whole screen except the top speaker. So its definitely the glass screen protector.

Tempered glass or phone's screen?

I have this weird outline on my phone, but I don't know it it is my tempered glass screen protector or if it is my phone's screen doing... something. It is visinle when the phone is off. It is inside the border of my screen and does not cross it.
I am thinking it is the adhesive on the tempered glass that has been cooked from the heat of the screen as it is most prevalent across the top and on the top half of both sides. It is also noticeable just above the home key.

I don't think that's the screen protector. I have been using tempered glass on both my phones and have never seen that.

Yeah. I finally went ahead and bit the bullet and removed my glass screen protector. It is the screen. It is not visible when the screen is on, but shows up pretty well when it is off. Sucks that I had to sacrifice the protector to make sure, though.
if your still under warranty you can get that fixed I just did a few weeks ago with that same problem

Funny you should mention that. I submitted an RMA request this morning.
That is a gap of air between the lcd and the digitizer. It means that is not glued properly.
This happened to me on an old phone, after almost 3 years of daily usage.
