I have quit a few videos on my SD Card, but the names of the videos are cut short it does not show the video full name,is there anyway I can get the full name of the videos to show up, Thank You.Longlegs
If you are using the Samsung video player, I can see about 40+ file name characters, see if there is any slides you can adjust so you can see more.

John thanks for your reply.i don't know what plays the videos,i just click on the video and it opens and plays.i can't see any sliders or anything else, most of the videos are photography based and most start with How To then something else but all I can see is the How To bit of the title.when I can only see a bit of the title I keep starting the wrong videos. These videos are MPG4 that I have transferred from my PC.Thank You.Longlegs
I have an purple stock widget names "video" when i click it, it shows all my video directory`s then you just click on the directory and you can see all the files, when you click on an video it plays it in the stock video player, also it is linked to the home screen current video widget, it show your last played video and you just click on it to continue playing the video, I love Anime so i have over an 1000+ 24min video`s on my microsd in a directory called Anime which i have set as my only video directory.
You dont have to use the large current video box, I use my 10.5" for video`s most of the time so it`s great for me, it`s just a widget that you add.
I will do a couple of screenshots so you can see.
http://imgur.com/a/bqt1A
EDIT: I have tried virtually every video compressor/encoder as some 24min anime episodes at 1080p can be 800mb far to big for my 64gb microsd, I convert them to 640x360, they look great on my 10.5" and i have tried all resolutions, and the file size is around 50-110mb depending on the complexity of the video as i use a variable bit-rate.

As the title says, I am looking for a decent video player, I have tried most, if not all in the "Market", but none I have found, seem to offer what I had as standard on the iphone!
What I would like, is the following:
1. Thumbnail of each video, with it's title.
2. The ability to zoom correctly, with proper aspect ratio support.
3. Remember the exit point of each video.
Zimly, has the best interface, of the ones I have found, but it does not support aspect ratio zoom, neither does it remember the exit point! Otherwise, I think this app is definitely on the right track!
The standard app, is good, but it does not display the title, nor does it remember the exit point, and you have to go into "Photos" to get to it!
If anyone knows of such an app, I would be most greatful.
P.S. Would just like to add, that the screen on this is superb for watching videos, whites are properly white, and blacks are really black! Unlike the iphone, which is a washed out mess with absolutely no contrast! Woe betied anyone who complains to Apple about this, I was actually told by their customer services, that no one else has complained, and that "They are happy with it"!!!! Thanks a lot Mr Jobs!
Another problem with video playback is that you cant jump to middle of movie. You can only jump cca 7min into movie, it you try to jump more it resets movie, starts playback from begining.
Tryed default player and one free with full lenght movie.
Mp4 format, h264

Meridian is the best I've used. Whilst it doesn't tick all your boxes (eg no preview), it does remember where you left off on each individual video. It also allows you to seek to particular point in the video far more effectively than the stock app.

Dave
This is the best Video player you can possible have on a android phone. It has all what you seek plus more. http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.hyperaware.videoplayerfull
On the fly bringnes settings, aspect ratios and it does remember the exit point also. It tells you if a file is playable. Only thumbnails are missing.
The only bad thing is no divx support on this phones. So You have to convert every ****.

You can play XviD/DviX movies with yxFlash player. Although it is be no means a perfect player, it is the only one(or at least was for a while) that can play these formats.
YxFlash is buggy as hell though... it doesn't even let me navigate to find files to play.

+1 from me also
Still no decent video players?
They seem to lack codecs or just be horribly made. I tried XYplayer but it's out of sync.
Can anyone recommend a good dvd ripping app so that I can rip movies and convert them to watch on my evo... i can convert them using doubletwist, but I need something to rip them... don't know of a reliable freeware app

or maybe, that's why you've posted so often.
try handbrake. works like a charm. google it, or look around here. plenty of threads about it already
the best app i've discovered for PC is DVDDecrypter. it works perfectly. allows you to select by chapters, or the whole DVD. good stuff!

4.36 gigs. that is from bd rip from my own bd disc. i use adobe cs4 converter to convert. dropped it on there and although it is a huge file, i am utterly impressed at the quality. stays constant audio and video sync and never drops framerate. blacks are amazing not inky at all and colors are very very vibrant.
but anyways if you are just going to view one movie every once in awhile like i do i recommend dropping 720p onto it. its easy and amazing

doubletwist
Doubletwist
Doubletwist is nice, for music and apps. But it rips movies 640 x 320 too small for the screen. There are no preferences I can find the change that. I am on a MAC and I have had great success converting my .AVI files with FFMPEG and the Mp4 presets. THe movies are about 800 megs and look great.
if anyone knows of a good app for converting mkv to mp4 id be interested i ripped all of Battlestar Galactica straight from Bluray disc source its in AVCHD format but i have mkv copies of whole series i could use if i could find easy way to transcode it losslessly or play it in mkv on android looking for a like VLC type video player for android
this is gonna sound weird, but AirVideo server for iPad(it streams videos to the iPad) it's the only app i've tried so far that will convert MKV with little to no quality loss. best part, it's free. just a suggestion.

Just a quick note... Unless you are playing the movie through hdmi on a 720p display, why would you be encoding 720p movies for a phone with a 800x480 display? 4.3gb sounds like a lot of wasted space for all those extra unused pixels.
For everyone else, handbrake is the free simple alternative. And for people that care to learn a few command line options, ffmpeg is fantastic. I get much smaller better looking files from the open source x264 compiled ffmpeg. But, configured correctly, handbrake can be a front end for ffmpeg anyway.
Download Daniusoft DVD Ripper.
It searches for your phone, connects, converts the movie and places it on your sd card in the correct folder. All by itself.

Also consider the wall I hit when I first tried ripping--I ripped the DVD at 800x480 with all the correct settings, but when I tried to throw it up on my HDTV via the HDMI output, my TV would not recognize the non-standard size.
So you have a choice: 1) rip to 720p if you are going to output via HDMI or 2) rip to 800x480 if you are ONLY going to view the movie on the phone.
Hi all,
just wondering what people are using to convert .avi/.mkv/etc to mp4/wmv/etc so Zune/Wp7 can use them?
ATM i'm using anyvideoconverter and converting the video's to "Zune HD" but it seems to leave a black border of about 5mm around every edge of the video which is really annoying me, so anyone got any other good ones?
Only confirmed ones please, i've used dozens of Conversion apps that say they'd do the job but in reality they don't, so only post if you've used one for WP7/Zune.
Just convert your Video to MP4 or WMV with WVGA resolution.

Do you know of a good one which will let me just convert to mp4 WVGA Paul?
*EDIT* Just found This Thread which Recommends a GUI for MENCoder called "SUPER". My dealings with MENCoder have been great in the past so i'll give it a go and let others know what it's like.
FWIW the Microsoft way is to use Expression encoder for WMV. It's free, it's nice, and it does a good job encoding, so if you want WMV you should use that one.

My Zune does not even want to read WMV files so I can not upload. I have multiple copies of DVD's/Blu-Ray's with digital copie of movie for portable devices.
I can copy those movies to my PC and watch them, I can watch them on HD2 but zune doesn ot see them so I can not copy them on to phone. They are all in WMV or MP4 format.
MP4 don't work in Zune!

Same problem, I have digital copy's of blu-ray's that came with them, they play using WMV but the Zune Software won't see them and won't play them.
Download 'Expression Encoder'. There's an option to encode specifically for Zune.

Mabe the audio stream?
I was just playing around with this last night, and the biggest issue was the audio stream. While it plays h264 streams up to the High Profile level 3.0, it did not like an AC3 stream. I had to demux a video that I had in an mkv container, convert the audio to AAC and remux into an mp4 container. Microsoft has a whole detailed table of stream type compatibility with bit rates, profiles, etc. I can't seem to post links, so search for it at the msdn dot microsoft dot com under this title "Supported Media Codecs for Windows Phone". The list on the WP7 consumer site sucks btw.
The AAC has two compatible types, AAC-LC and HE-AACv1 or v2.
I used MeGui to redo the audio, and yamb to mux it.
Thanks dgetz, here is the link to msdn.

I can confirm that MP4 works on the Focus, using TV shows previously converted for my iPhone 4
I use handbrake on Windows and Mac to convert my videos, using the settings from
http://lifehacker.com/5572037/handbrake-presets-for-your-new-ipad-or-iphone-4
The results have been good, but using the frame(middle) setting shown in that article does bump up the file size a good amount, and as I'm sure a lot of you have heard, storage space isn't so easy to come by on WP7 yet...
Handbrake
I too can vouch for handbrake. All of the videos I have made for my ipod touch with it work just fine on the Focus. Unfortunately, the library I have for the touch is lower resolution, with videos at about 1/2 DVD resolution and at 500kbps encode rate. I end up with about 500 MB for the about 90 min. It is nice because they don't take up a lot of room, but still look decent. When output to a standard definition TV they look fine as well.
When I first put a few of these home videos on the Focus the lower quality was immediately noticeable. To see how I could push the phone, in my reply above I took a full DVD resolution video 720x400 (16x9 non-anamorphic) and corrected the audio stream. That video looks gorgeous on the Focus screen and is great for showing off the phone. It also takes up over 2.5 GB!!!! It is encoded at a rate of about 2100 kbps. As with any video encoding for a mobile device you have to make your own decision about resolution, encoding rate, etc in that constant game of quality versus size.
One thing to note. If there are black bars on your video, then either you have a video that was not encoded in a proportion that matches your screen or it was hard coded with the black bars. The second thing should be rare nowadays (eliminating this wasted information space was the point of an anamorphic DVD). The first is actually very common. IF your media is a studio movie, almost every action film these days comes at 2.35:1 instead of 16:9=1.77:1. Personally I like viewing any of my content in the way it was originally intended to be viewed and don't ever re-proportion anything. At the moment I am not sure if the Focus/WP7 'stretches' videos. I know on my ipod touch this was an option you could toggle by double tapping the video during playback...
Maybe I will play around with a few options tonight and report back.
have a zunehd and remember seeing this thread on abi
anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58183
it converts the audio of any avi/mkv and keeps the video the same, so converting only takes a few mins, and zune software recognizes it..for the zunehd anyways, maybe someone can try w/ wp7
Since I couldn't find right settings for MediaCoder (best video converter ever).
I was using Prism Video Converter for my Omnia7.
About settings for prism:
For .wmv use as video compresor WMV9 and for sound WMAV9, i am not changing the resolution as it is not bothering me at all. All files (mostly avi or mkv) played smooth after conversion.
If anybody have good settings for MediaCoder I will be much appreciated for sharing.
Thx
Okay, so MP4forHD works. The quality still isn't stunning, but it'll do for now (i guess.) However, i've encountered an issue with contrast. All my blacks appear as dark grays, which drives me nuts

the Zune monitors certain folders fot videos. Make sure the video is in the right location ot go to the settings and modify your monitored folders
yes also you might already have the video in your collection and not know it because I had this problem I was trying to transfer a movie for about 3 hours and didn't realize that the video folder in my collection had different folders
TV shows, Movies, Personal, Other <---- it was in other but yeah it might be in there if it says media up dated on the bottom when you drag and copy the video then it's defintiely in there
Tried searching but didn't find this question.
I have made picture video with music of my little girl to leave with her for one day.
I have used DVD Catalyst 4 to convert them. It says the specs are converted to 1280x720. When I watch them on the phone the pictures are cropped at the top and bottom so I can't see all the picture.
The video looks perfect while playing on the computer.
So does anyone know of a different, ????x???, screen size so the pictures match my compter?
Thanks so much if you can help.

Hi Antonio,
Thank you for using DVD Catalyst,
Check the player you are using on your Samsung Galaxy S3. It could be that it is set to some Zoom setting that cuts off the video.
The files that DVD Catalyst 4 creates should play in all the video players, so you might want to try the Gallery app and/or the Google Videos app as well, and see if that makes a difference.
If that doesn't help, it is probably easier to just send me an email directly. Just tap on the "email us" button in DVD Catalyst, or use dvdcatalyst at gmail dot com.

Thanks,
No matter what video player I tried, BS Player, Stock video player, Rock Player, the zoom button did nothing at all on all 3.
Could not get it so I tried the drag and drop and let the phone convert it and it turned out perfect.
I just read some people are having issues with this method about the video not playing so I never tried it.
