Stock recovery to install OTA - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Ive been trying to find the stock recovery for my m9 in order to install the latest OTA since I have flashed TWRP recovery and have not backed up original recovery.
Right now im downloading the RUU 0PJAIMG_HIMA_UHL_L50_SENSE70_hTC_Asia_AUS_1.32.710.16_Radio_01.01_U11440261_56.02.50306G_2_F_release_427214_signed.zip
Hoping to extract the recovery img and flash. My software version is 1.32.710.16. Optus Australia
Any info on how to go about returning my recovery back to stock would be appreciated.

Any luck?

Why didn't you just flash the RUU? Would have been the easiest solution if you already downloaded it since the M9 can only install OTAs if the system is completely untoched (=not rooted) and mount as read-only.
Nevertheless if you're still looking for a method to extract files from a RUU (no matter whether it's a *.zip or an *.exe): Download latest 7-Zip, install it and right click on the RUU file > 7-Zip > Open (the second option from above) > #. It may take some time to open the RUU but then you will find what you need if you open the archive 2.zip.

[Q] Help Restoreing stock recovery 1.56.720.6 or Flash ota

I would like to restore my stock recovery on 1.56.720.6, im unable to find this one on xda, My other option is to extract it from the OTA but there is no link anywhere to download that, can someone help me with this?
EDITL downloaded from htcdev site its a 100mb file do I flash the whole thing using super tool? if so which option should I pick to flash or goto CWM and flash from zip?
does my bootloader need to be locked before I do this?
anyone?
Is that download actually firmware or the OTA update?... I think it's only source code? Did you download it and check in the .zip file what the actual contents are before you just go and flash random .zip files with your version number on it?
As for stock recovery, correct, I can't find that stock recovery either. Just like with the OTA update most guys that get it don't bother making backup and sharing before doing anything.

They don't specify on the HTC site but when I unzip it there is a .tar file inside it, so I assume its either the ota or kernel source which someone more experienced than me can tell me.
Here's the link its filed as a zip under HTC one m8 devices

(Q) Firmware / Stock Help

Okay so here is my issue. I'm literally stuck! I have no computer to go back and lock my bootloader and I'm not s-off. I have no way, to my knowledge, to install the new firmware to play with the new stock roms. If anybody has any suggestion, that would be terrific!
Are you on stock rom? If yes you only need to flash stock recovery. Relocking bootloader is not needed

How would I go about flashing stock recovery?
Unfortunately you will need a PC for this . Are you on custom recovery now? How did you flash that in the first place?

I did it from a computer at work. I no longer have that job though. So I'm seriously stuck.
Surely, you know someone with a computer that they will let you use?

alright, here's an update. i went to my fiances house and used her mothers computer (worlds slowest internet, i think AOL is faster) and worlds oldest computer ... anyways... i locked my bootloader and flashed a stock recovery, i went back to my stock rom as well and checked the software update from AT&T (which said that I had an update before i did all this) but now when i check for an update it says that i'm currently up to date and when i check information from online and compare it to my information i can confirm that I am on 1.58 but i'm android 4.4.2 and VIPER calls for a stock firmware of 4.4.3 (i think) also i can't find anywhere online on information on what the current radio is of the newest update. i'm trying to make sure that everything that I have is current to date. I don't want to be outdated lol . anways , i'm trying to figure out how to run viper with the current firmware that they require. thank you for any help you can give me now
EDIT : i bought this phone about 3 months ago and i HAVENT made any updates since then. i rooted it as soon as i got it. so im not sure if i am up-to-date

Radio associated with software 1.58 (latest software before the new 2.23 now rolling out) is: 1.16.21331931.LA11G_20.31A.4145.02L
But in any case, the RUU for 2.23 is now available. So you can just run the "official" RUU: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
Or the bootable version (no PC required) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/general/att-2-23-502-3-bootable-ruu-pc-required-t2860486
Just relock the bootloader (since you are s-on) and run the RUU. It doesn't matter if anything on the device is not updated, as RUU contains the complete image. Just backup your personal data, as it will be wiped.

If he was rooted he could have restored the stock recovery without a PC pretty easily.
There used to be a command flash_image in the terminal emulator(Need to download binary for it I think). Don't know if it still works or not though
flash_image recovery /path-to-image/name_of_recovery.img
Even then there is always the "dd" command to use.
Download recovery file to phone, if it's zipped then uzip it and move the recovery.img file to /sdcard/ - Can use ES File explorer or Root explorer.
Open Terminal Emulator.
Type:
su - to get # if you don't have it.
cat /proc/emmc - this will dump all the partition info in the terminal, look for recovery. WWE should all be mmcblk0p43 , just make sure either way.
When you have the partition number for recovery go and type:
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p43 - that's it.
You just "flashed" back stock recovery. No PC required.

Cannot install updates due to recovery change

So, I got notification saying the new update is ready, I downloaded it clicked OK, rebooted the phone and said entering the recovery but it went directly to TWRP recovery ( previously I have unlocked bootloader and rooted my system and installed custom recovery)
So my question is how do I install this latest update ?

Not wanting to hijack the OP, but I'm trying to install update version 3.28.401.6 on an unlocked UK M8 and I'm in the exact same boat. I heard that the stock recovery for the M8 is different for different providers, so not sure now feasible it is to restore stock recovery to receive the OTA, then go back to TWRP. Is there a way to manually install the update using TWRP?

So you title the thread with your own solution as well. "Cannot install update due to recovery change..." How do I install this update? "
Obviously it would mean you have to have stock recovery, not twrp.
Flash a stock recovery, reboot, install OTA update. Custom recovery can then be reflashed after the update

This is an update file right, like zip where we can flash from twrp ?
The thing is I cannot find the stock recovery for my model 2.23.118.3
Edit : Found stock recovery of my phone

If flashing stock recovery is too much of a hassle perhaps you shouldn't have started flashing in the first place, yes?
You won't be able to do OTA over TWRP, even the TWRP developers said as much.
Official Updates and TWRP
Excerpt: Installing official updates from your manufacturer or carrier is not supported by TWRP.
Period.
As for the stock recovery you need. Just copy the OTA.zip file to your PC and extract the recovery.img file within the firmware.zip file.

Yes, the main reason I unlocked my bootloader ..... was just for HK mod but then only I realized that my phone is S-ON and S-OFF is only possible using sunshine.
Ok now I have the recovery.img file for my phone.
What should I do with it ?
Using hassoon2000's toolkit select 'your own recovery' and flash that's it ?
And one more question my CIDnum is t-mob009
Does that mean my mobile is tmobile based ?
In my place we have only two carriers and we don't have tmobile, sprint or verizon here.
EDIT : @mroshaw I hope you got your answer from the post #6
EDIT 2 : @BerndM14 just flashed the stock recovery and updated my phone and happy with it
Thanks for helping me mate
Good Luck
Awesome, good stuff. This will definitely help me out too.
Can I ask one quick follow up - where on the phone is OTA.zip stored? I have Root Explorer so just a matter of knowing where to look.

Brilliant, thank you so much mate! Copied that down to my PC, flashed the recovery.bin and the update applied itself just fine! Restored TWRP and I'm back in business.
Really appreciate the help from you and the OP - great stuff!

Rare Firmware Help

My HTC 10 is network locked to Hutchison 3G Ireland.
I had flashed TWRP and SuperSU to it and also S-Offed.
Then later I got a notification for an OTA update - (1.53.771.6).
So I wanted to re-flash my original stock recovery (1.21.771.4) in order to take it
BUT... I didn't make a back up of my original stock recovery and I can't find a copy of it anywhere online.
These firmware versions seem to be unique to Hutchison 3G: 1.21.771.4 -> 1.53.771.6 -> 1.90.771.4
Any tricks on how to get this OTA without a copy of my stock recovery?
Or how to obtain my stock recovery from somewhere like htc.com?
I can find the binaries for 1.21.771.4 here: htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads/, but no recovery.img within them.
Is there some simple solution I'm missing here?
I have a few ideas:
1. Flash a similar recovery version (e.g. 1.21.401.4 European Version) then take the OTA. Would this work?
2. Download the available OTA (1.53.771.6) to the phone, as normal, but don't install it.
Locate where it's stored on the phone and take the recovery.img from it.
Flash this stock recovery.img manually from fastboot.
Then manually install the rest of the firmware from this stock recovery.
Is this even possible??

There is an RUU available for you. It may be an older version but it should work because you are S OFF. You could use the RUU then take the ota. Remember if you choose to do this it will wipe everything including twrp and root so make backups.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=74636
Edit just looked and ther is 1.80.771 available which is newer than the one you are on.

You need not only the stock recovery and boot image but also an untouched stock system image if you want to take the OTA.
If you don't have backups of all of these, then start with your option 2 and download the OTA to your phone and locate where it's downloaded. From there you can install the rom portion of the update with TWRP (see the faq in the twrp thread) and flash the firmware portion manually using fastboot.
Else you can go the RUU route as mentioned above.

Flash TWRP on RUU'ed Stock ROM without PC?

Hey,
Quick question, I'm away on holiday and had to use an RUU to reset my phone completely back to stock. I don't have my PC with me but was wondering if there might be any other way to get TRWP installed so I can get back to custom ROM's before the end of my trip?

I've described how to do this for CM-based ROMS with Samsung devices. Unfortunately, I know of no way to do this for the HTC 10. The issue is getting it rooted. My understanding is that the Sunshine app can root some 10s, but not all. You could try that. When you run the app it will do a series of tests on your device. If it cannot be rooted by the app it will give the message, "Root is required first." Otherwise, the app can root your device and proceed from there. Once rooted you could then use Flashify to install TWRP.

Thanks guys!!
I'm trying to figure out, if I want to flash just the recovery with the no wipe zip, can I delete all the other .img files within the zip or do I have to edit the Android-info.txt for the corresponding lines?
No issue in flashing the no wipe file as it is, just curious for future reference if I wanted to create easy 2PS6IMG.zip's in the future.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA Labs
I simply take the firmware.zip from OTA, delete all .img files, rename twrp.IMG to recovery.IMG and repack it to 2PS6IMG.zip
You don't need to change the android-info.txt as partitions without images won't get wiped, even if it says so.
You can flash Boot, Recovery and..... And.... Which was the third one? Without S-Off or signed firmware package.
