Cannot install updates due to recovery change - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I got notification saying the new update is ready, I downloaded it clicked OK, rebooted the phone and said entering the recovery but it went directly to TWRP recovery ( previously I have unlocked bootloader and rooted my system and installed custom recovery)
So my question is how do I install this latest update ?

Not wanting to hijack the OP, but I'm trying to install update version 3.28.401.6 on an unlocked UK M8 and I'm in the exact same boat. I heard that the stock recovery for the M8 is different for different providers, so not sure now feasible it is to restore stock recovery to receive the OTA, then go back to TWRP. Is there a way to manually install the update using TWRP?

So you title the thread with your own solution as well. "Cannot install update due to recovery change..." How do I install this update? "
Obviously it would mean you have to have stock recovery, not twrp.

Flash a stock recovery, reboot, install OTA update. Custom recovery can then be reflashed after the update

Is there any way to install the eye update from twrp itself ?
This is an update file right, like zip where we can flash from twrp ?
The thing is I cannot find the stock recovery for my model 2.23.118.3
Edit : Found stock recovery of my phone
Huge thanks to @vm54 fore uploading it

If flashing stock recovery is too much of a hassle perhaps you shouldn't have started flashing in the first place, yes?
You won't be able to do OTA over TWRP, even the TWRP developers said as much.
Official Updates and TWRP
Excerpt: Installing official updates from your manufacturer or carrier is not supported by TWRP.
Period.
As for the stock recovery you need. Just copy the OTA.zip file to your PC and extract the recovery.img file within the firmware.zip file.

Yes, the main reason I unlocked my bootloader ..... was just for HK mod but then only I realized that my phone is S-ON and S-OFF is only possible using sunshine.
Ok now I have the recovery.img file for my phone.
What should I do with it ?
Using hassoon2000's toolkit select 'your own recovery' and flash that's it ?
And one more question my CIDnum is t-mob009
Does that mean my mobile is tmobile based ?
In my place we have only two carriers and we don't have tmobile, sprint or verizon here.
EDIT : @mroshaw I hope you got your answer from the post #6
EDIT 2 : @BerndM14 just flashed the stock recovery and updated my phone and happy with it
Thanks for helping me mate
Good Luck

Awesome, good stuff. This will definitely help me out too.
Can I ask one quick follow up - where on the phone is OTA.zip stored? I have Root Explorer so just a matter of knowing where to look.

Twrp won't have the decryption keys or some of the HTC specific functions required to apply the OTA. You'll need a stock /system and a stock recovery.

Would this explain the error that I'm getting?
Package expects build fingerprint of htc/tmous/htc_m8:4.4.4/KTU84P/396641.2:user/release-keys or htc/tmous/htc_m8:5.0.1/htc_m8: 5.0.1/LRX22C/464190.4:user/release-keys.; this device has htc/tmous/htc_m8:4.4.3/KTU84L/365360.5/user/release-keys.
I flashed stock recovery, but my phone is still root. Did a full wipe/restore, still getting same thing. The error looks like it's not happy about a missing update perhaps, if I'm reading that correctly. Best I know, I have the latest kitkat version. But, I've had twrp for awhile so maybe I missed an OTA update along the way.

If you're SOFF and supercid just flash the lollipop ruu T-Mobile just release. It doesn't matter what previous rom you're on. Then reflash custom recovery and rooted. I've done this alot of time already.

- Flash firmware via fastboot
- Flash twrp via fastboot
- Flash Lollipop via twpr

For me (I am s-on) I did it in this order:
- flashed twrp stock rom
- rebooted and made sure the rom worked
- flashed stock recovery via fastboot
- rebooted and downloaded and installed OTA.
If you are s-off I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong) you can use the RUU instead.
I did have a wifi issue which was solved by a factory wipe ( yes I had to re-install and setup the phone again).

Hey there Liam.
Thanks for the reply.
I've been to that site often, but they don't have the ruu for 1.40.771.1, only 1.32.771.6 and 1.32.771.15; and from what I understand I cant flash a recovery that doesn't match my current SW number.
I'd also be interested to learn how to extract the recovery from an RUU. I tried searching last for instructions, but to no avail.
Cheers.

If you can't find the stock recovery you want, (and you want it so that you can flash an OTA update), you can always extract it from the OTA update zip once the update downloads to your device.
The OTA update will flash with the recovery that comes with the update. For example, say you are on 1.32.771.6 (random number) and you receive an OTA update for upgrading to 1.40.771.1 -- the OTA update will be able to install itself with a 1.32.771.6 stock recovery or with a 1.40.771.1 stock recovery, and the update comes with the 1.40.771.1 recovery.
To extract if from the OTA update zip, all you have to do is open the zip up with the latest version of 7zip, and pull out the recovery.img file.

You should be able to flash the recovery using fastboot. And I don't think you need to lock the bootloader to accept the update. (You need to make sure that you have a stock system partition though...)

Cool cool.
I think I have flashed back to stock recovery.
When I rebooted into recovery after flashing I had a black screen with a red exclamation triangle on it.
Is that correct?
Cheers.
Hmmmmm, OK, I decided to see if the OTA update would take, so began the process.
The phone booted into recovery, the update started, then about 10% into the update the phone went to the red exclamation triangle screen.
The phone eventually rebooted itself and the update hasn't taken, (I'm still on 5.0.2).
BUT I have a working phone, so there's that!
Any thoughts on what may have happened?
Cheers.

The first part of the update is just a bunch of checks to ensure that you are fully stock. Are you sure you are fully stock? Did you have root at any point? Did you mount /system as read/write at any point?

I believe the only way to go back to full stock would be to run an ruu then, is that correct?

Yes, either that, or find an untouched TWRP backup for your CID and restore it.

HTC M8 cannot update to android 6.0. Please Help

Hello,
I have a HTC M8 rooted (Super SU) with TWRP Recovery and Android ver. 5.0.1, Software ver. 4.19.111.4, Baseband ver. 1.25.2145000021.06G_20.68.4196t.01_F.
Last couple of days, I received a notification to update for android 6.0, but after I downloaded the update and press to "install now", the phone always restarted to TWRP recovery and do not install the update. Any Idea Why ?!!!.
Could any one help me to install the update?
Thanks

Here you should find the stock recoveries: http://www.andromods.com/download-files/htc-one-m8-stock-recovery-verizon-sprint-att-tmobile.html
download the right recovery.img file and follow these instruction on how to flash - http://androiding.how/how-to-install-twrp-recovery-via-fastboot/ - in this just change the twrp recovery.img to the one you downloaded and run the code in command prompt.
It is recommended to do I clean install to avoid any further reported errors. Once you relock the bootloader you will lose all the data (like hard reset).

First thing .. you cannot do OTA with a rooted stock ROM, you need a non-rooted ROM.
Secondly .. there is no need to relock bootloader - read the note in my thread.
Just read again post #1 and follow all the 14 steps, you should be fine.
Anything, you can ask in my thread as I'm not following your thread.

HK HTC10 Returning to stock rom

Hi there, I'm using Hong Kong version of htc10, i tried to root it but when i flashed supersu and xposed arm64 sdk23, it comes to stuck in the system ui interface showing that: 'System UI has stopped unexpectedly....etc.' Looping in that point. So i tried wipe all data in twrp mode and reboot again, still the same situation. Then I download a TW version of stock IMG which is 1.30.708.1(Original was 1.53.708.4) and flashed it in download mode, after that i rebooted it, everything is normal again. Fresh new welcome screen.
But there are some features that i can't use such as can't receive 4G+ signal, can't receive VoLTE, even could't use battery saving mode ....etc.
So I just want to know where can I find the STOCK IMG for my HK version CID HTC__622, which is 1.53.708.4 or so called RUU for it? Thanks.:crying::crying:

So I just want to know where can I find the STOCK IMG for my HK version CID HTC__622, which is 1.53.708.4 or so called RUU for it? Thanks.:crying::crying:

I'm looking for the HK stock img as well, I've only found one which seems to have been modified so OTA no longer work. Did you have any luck?

I've found a twrp backup posted from someone else:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/stock-stock-collection-recovery-ruu-ota-t3359297/post67760253#post67760253
the working link for the download is on the next page.
this is definitely the HK rom as after a wipe the default language is HK Chinese.
only problem is OTA does not work and when trying to manually flash the OTA manually (using TWRP and stock recovery) the check on the OTA zip passes but the system check fails so it looks like system has been modified.

Rename zip file to 2PS6IMG.zip. Place on sdcard. Reboot to download mode and follow instructions. Do full backup before (SD and internal).

Once that file is in correct spot, you will see option to flash it (VOLUp to flash). Been a while since I flashed stock img. Check guide section if you want to confirm.

Please help the Hong kong community by backing up the system image and boot for 1.80.708.6 . I already provided the stock recovery file. It shouldn't take too long.

I would love to help but I've already sold the HTC 10 on already.
But with the RUU linked by purple patch you can get to stock completely. And it's so easy!

OMG, how the hell did i miss such important thing!!! I will try it right away! Thank you!!VERY MUCH!!!!
Sorry to bother you again, I put the 2PS6IMG in the external card, but it show an error message:" FAIL19 RU_MAIN_VER_FAIL os-version in android-info missing."
Maybe the IMG version that i downloaded us higher than my phone currently running? I'm running 1.53.XXX now.
Well, nevermind, I S-OFFed my htc10 and flashed the zip, now I'm using stock firmware and able to receive OTA, Thanks a lot man! You are my HERO!!
I encounter the same situation and like to return to Stock ROM, but my firmware version is 1.92.708.3. Searched over Internet and can't find the corresponded RUU. Anyone have it and can share to me?

you don't need the same version of RUU, just flash the old version. I always flash the 1.53 RUU

I assume you had unlock it, then it may already lost the warrant(not sure for this in HK), so why not s-off it via htc?

How can I easily update the firmware on my T-Mobile HTC 10?

I have the T-Mobile HTC 10. I never converted it to US unlocked or anything. When I got it, I unlocked the bootloader, installed custom recovery (TWRP) rooted it, and slapped on a custom ROM (LeeDroid). I have a nandroid backup of my stock rom. I'm still S-ON.
Now I find out that T-Mobile has FINALLY pushed the firmware update. How I can easily upgrade the firmware on my phone?
What I tried was to backup my leedroid, restore my stock rom, and then take the update. But I got the corrupt file error.
No idea what to do now. I saw someone had a file of the OTA update (downloaded it), but I don't know what to do with that, or even if I can as I have S-ON.
How can I easily get to rocking the new firmware on my T-Mobile HTC 10?
Thanks!!

Thanks, very helpful!
Everything worked great until actually applying the OTA update in recovery. It wouldn't do it, saying the update was for PMEWL devices, and mine is PMEUHL. I definitely tried to use your OTA update file that you posted in another thread. Any idea what this is all about? (Seems WL is a reference to another phone, maybe US unlocked. So perhaps this is the OTA for US unlocked, not T-Mobile US? Or it's really for TMO DE?).

I'm getting the same error unfortunately. I have USA T-mobile HTC 10. Does anyone have a solution for this or are we USA T-mobile folks doomed to wait for an RUU?

Yea I was gonna ask.
It might make a difference being s-on but wondering if u tried to update firmware from the signed firmware?
I was running into issues flashing the Ota but eventually managed to to get it to work. Here's exactly what I did.
Place the Ota file on the root of an SD card.
On your PC, Pull the recovery image from the firmware zip within the t-mobile OTA file and place in the ADB folder.
In twrp, go to Mount, and mount system as read only.
Then, select Restore and go to your untouched system backup. The only two options that should be checked are System IMAGE and Boot.
Reboot to Download
Flash the stock recovery pulled from the OTA.
Reboot to Bootloader, then boot to Recovery
Select install from SD card and select the Ota file.
For me, it did seem to hang at "patching system" or something like that, but be patient. It did complete loading.
Hope this works for you
