My phone got frozen while I was reading facebook news. Battery was about 60%. I turned it off, but it doesn't turn on again. It just quickly splashes the "ASUS In search of Incredible/ Powered by Android" and then goes off again.
I tried to get to Recovery Mode by holding volume UP and power buttons, but it didn't even get to the point the device vibrates. I tried the same with volume DOWN as well. No good.
The charging battery icon shows battery is being charged ok.
Is it dead for good?
Thanks

You should always say what model you have as there may be a little difference in how to fix it, I have a 551ML which has 4gb ram so you might be using another model meaning what I tell you can (potentially) brick your device.
Mate, if you have a stock phone that won't start then you probably have a lemon. If you are sure you have done nothing to it then I'd take it back under warranty as you seem to have had problems from the start.
Just to be sure though, you are starting from off, hold volume up and then pressing and holding power. Release power when you get to the first boot logo then release volume up.This should gt you to fastboot mode.

Sorry, my phone is a Z00AD:
- a ZE551ML
- 2Gb of RAM
- 16gb rom
- 1.8ghz Atom Z3560
- Full HD screen
- Build LRX21V.WW-ASUS_Z00AD-2.13.40.13_20150401_8390_user
- Kernel 3.10.20-x86_64_moor-265182-gb0fff5c
- Baseband 1509_5.0.18.00_0320, 1509_7.0.10.0_0320
I forget that there are plenty models of Zenfone 2. And I need to create myself a signature!
By the way, I got it working again.
It still doesn't boot to recovery with the VolUP+Pwr button combination, but it does get to the application again .
From the application, a can use "QuickBoot app" to get me to recovery. On recovery, I get the laid down android with its belly open and a red triagle with an exclamation mark (and some chinese? stuff written below him).
Thanks

Well, the chinese message I see at recovery is:
出错了!
Where 出错 means make mistakes; go wrong
and 了means a particle of a sentence that implies past tense or completion of something
So, it means something went wrong! Or simple "Error!"

That's how you get to recovery. Once you get the android with "Error" in any language underneath, hold power and hit volume up. You might need to do this a couple of times but be aware holding power for approx. 10 secs will turn off phone.

Ahh!!
I can get to FASTBOOT (Bootloader) now!
All instruction I found tell me to hold VolUP+Pwr until the phone vibrates or the boot screen shows up.
BUT my phone does not vibrate! Is it broken?
So, I'm holding VolUP+Pwr for 5 seconds, the I release Pwr (only). It gets me to fastboot, and then I switch to recovery. Then I do "hold power and hit volume up" you said, and I finally can see recovery menu :victory:
Thank you very much!

So, after trying out a few firmwares (JM2, JG8, JM5) and kernels (Samset&OC) I can't no longer boot to recovery with Vol UP + Home + power. I can't really say when this problem first occurred, but maybe with JG8 flash. The strange thing is that I can get to recovery with adb reboot recovery and through android console with reboot recovery (when rooted ofc). Also download mode works great.
Things I have tried:
-flash again to JM2 and JM5 with re-partition checked (512 PIT)
-cleared cache+data through recovery
-factory reset through phone code (this also cleared the internal SD)
-took out the battery multiple times
-booted phone without sim
-flashed phone without sim
-changed CSC with phone code
-restore a nandroid backup of JM2. Recovery worked with this one when I took the backup
-there's no external flash card inserted
Soooo..does anyone have any idea about this kind of problem?
i had a similar problem after trying few ROMs. In my case, when i pres the key combi i get the boot logo and then few seconds later the screen goes black and then i see the boot logo again, and this goes forever. and then i tried pressing the same key combination simultaneously and once i see the boot logo i let go the power button and keep the vol up and home pressed, and then only it went into the recovery mode.
hope it works the same for you
Cheers
Agreed, 99.9% chance you are doing it wrong.

mmthabet: I had the exact same experience. Letting go of the power button when the logo appears lets me enter recovery.
or you may need to take out the battery first for a few seconds... after that, you can reinsert it back and try recovery mode...
at least this work for me...
Thanks for replies but none of the solutions work. The recovery mode button combination DID work for a few weeks, but then just stopped working.
I know that I'm doing it right. I have always pressed vol up and home down until the phone loaded recovery and only briefly pressed power button just at the start. I have also tried to remove battery multiple times and once waited 30 mins before re-inserting it.
Trust me, I'm not doing it wrong :s And recovery is working great through adb reboot recovery and shell.

More so a timing issue. Buttons not pressed at the same time.
I get it all the time for all combo's.
Just keep trying.
You might already have this however just in case you dont, check out Quick Boot.

With this app you can boot into recovery mode. Have to be rooted though.

this wont work, if you bricked the phone in a bad flash situation.
in times when this app works, you can easily do adb reboot recover
so this app still doesn't address the real issue of how to get the 3 buttons press hardware recovery mode

I release the buttons right when the first Samsung texts comes on the screen. It will take it to Recovery mode. I also had a "boot loop" few times, if I keep pressing the buttons all the time.
Have you tried release your fingers right in the first texts? I really don`t know what is exactly the right way to press the buttons, but this always have took it to Recovery.
Looks like my latest full wipe with *2767*3855# cured it. Flashed JM5-->full wipe-->samset1.9b-->samset kernel and now it works. It must've got stuck somehow in my previous JM5 installation.
I cant get into the download- or recovery-mode by using these keys... so i am not able to flash a new firmware! can anybody help me please? is there a chance to get into the download mode by using an adb-command?
please help i just cant get into the download mode!

yes
adb reboot download
but it is dangerous, as you can not recover from a bricked state, if your flash is not compatible or if something went wrong with odin, etc.
I you're bricked and can't get into Download or recovery mode, leave the device to boot, it will just show a black screen for a while then will turn its self off, once this happens you should be able to use the key combo.

Any idea how long you waited? Been waiting 5 minutes, hasn't shut off. Mine's a Bell though so I'm guessing I won't have any luck.
The way i do it (no chance of doing it wrong and timing):
hold down+home and then also press the power button for a little more then 10 seconds (so all 3 buttons for 10 seconds). The phone will reset into download mode, never fails in whatever mode the phone originaly was..
Hi,
I have received new zenfone 2 and it asked for software upgrade. After that it said it is optimizing applications and eventually got into reset loop with only showing ASUS logo. I have tried to get into recovery mode pressing the power and volume up and release on vibrate... nothing happend!!!
Now it vibrates every minute or so... but it even does not turn the screen on... just vibrating every now and then...
Please, help!

Power off completely, then hold volume up and power to get to bootloader. Press volume down until you get to recovery and hit power button. It should reset and then a android appears. If it then says error hold power and press up volume. You should get to recovery menu that way.
Wipe cache...
Reboot and see what happens...

I have the same problem
---------- Post added at 12:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:07 AM ----------
my device is in error screen, and with the dead robot.
Hi guys, please help, maybe some of you could do that for me... Problem is strange and I just did not find solution jet... So, I just can not power down my ZE551ML completly. Device is trying somehow to boot up, getting some kind of loop. First of all, phone came to me totaly dead - I have to plug it in to charger for 3-4 hours to ligh up notification led... After that it turned on normally. After first boot and setting things up, updates showed up. So I did update - for 4 times, OTA. It looks ok (now I have 2.20.40.90 clean, I mean no root or unlocked BL). But strange comes when I want to turn it off (power down) - device is shutting down, screean is going black and... bum! - the battery icon is showing up: emty for the very first few seconds, then it changeing to green (showing actually power state, I mean accu capacity), then device reboot itself and whole process starts over and over again... I can not stop it. Well, I think if the battery would be full, that could completly discharge it - couse is unstopable... I found, that when I press vol- when the battery is green, phone shuts off its screen, but after 20 seconds the process begins over again... i can boot it normally by pressing vol+ and power - it leads me to the bootloader manu, then boot normally - done. but it is very annoing... beside that phone is ok. Can someone help? BTW - I did factory reset from stock recovery, but it did not help...

I had the same problem. My solution was to unplug the usb charger. After that, the update was successfully.
on me Z007 I did a factory reset because my phone would not start and when it did it kept giving me messages about unfortunately this stopped and that stopped BBM, Zenui, google play store etc. Once i did the factory reset the phone worked again but I had no data so I thought I would just restart. Now all I get is ASUS and the spinning wheel. any suggestions??
Hello, I own model Asus Zenfone 2 laser 5.5 ( ZE550KL ) I have also same problem, phone keeps on rebooting....... Showing Asus logo and then vibrates and again start rebooting
I have installed asus firmware from SD card from recovery mode which was successfully installed .... did every thing after pressing volume and power button and even performed necessary actions by doing fastbood mode.
but phone is on same condition.... showed every where.. even service center people raised there hands
Kindly help me to recover my phone back.
Hello,
My friends own an htc m8. A non professional lab has flashed him Android Revoultion Rom (without making a wipe, he used to use stock rom before that)
Since than the device suffer from a lot of problem,we would like to flash a stock rom.
What's the problem? the device refuses to go into bootloader at all & than refuses to turn on, only after a while in the charger it does turn on.
But any attempt to make the device go into the bootloader, has failed.
tried also RUU - it won't load the bootloader, and the pc recognize him as QHSUSB_BULK if the device is off, which is soft brick as far a i know.
The device actually turn on after a while, than when i connect it to the PC, the pc does recognize him normally.
What's the best option to flash a recovery and a stock rom?
Thank you.

There is definately some information missing here. Flashing a ROM without wiping will never get you into this state, unless maybe the ROM was meant for a different device.
It sounds more like a deleted bootloader partition, or borked eMMC.
It's bricked. You need to take it to a shop to see if they can JTAG it back to life.
Sorry.

Hey,
We don't know what they have done exactly
They device does turn on after a while... Can i just flash the whole bootloader through the computer anyhow? If the device is on, the computer does recognize him and i can use adb/transfer files.
In a few minutes when the device will turn on i'll write the software information

Have you tried turning off the phone, and booting it by holding down power + vol down? That should take you to bootloader. It's not bricked if you can boot it.
Tried that already...Doesn't work. The device refused to turn on that way.
Tried also through adb/an app when the device was on (yeah it's rooted), than the device turned off and the computer see it as QHSUSB_BULK.
Than i have to plug it off the pc, connect to AC and after a while it's just turn on by itself....

Not sure about this. If you didn't have a bootloader, I don't think your phone would boot at all.
It does boot, but not normally.
Anyway, there's no way of getting into bootloader
Did you enable developer options and within those option check USB debugging, so it's enabled. If not got to "settings > about > software information > more" and tab the build number entry several times until you get prompt the developer options have been enabled. Then got to developer options and check USB debugging. Try running the RUU again. Many this already works. Otherwise we'd have to look further.
Send by the swarm intelligence of my coffee machine ?.
I hgve already enabled dev options. once the ruu tries go get into the bootloader, the device just turn off and i can see on pc device manager it's QHSUSB_BULK

Meaning what, specifically? Stuck on HTC logo screen, or something else?
As long as the screen is on (on any screen), you can:
1) Hold Power + vol up for 20-30 second, which will force a reboot.
2) The moment the screen goes dark, let go of those buttons, and only hold vol down. Don't let go until the bootloader appears.

I'm still confused about what you are describing, and I think others trying to help are confused also.
You said the phone boots, but not normally. I asked what that meant specifically (which you did not answer at all). Stuck on HTC screen?
So the screen is on, when you try the button sequence I suggested? Then when the screen goes black to reboot, it just stays black?
Hard to help, if you don't provide details and specifics.
The phone boot and you can use it, that's how i have provided information from the settings. If i try to reboot, the device does not turn on. only after about 5 minutes.
same for bootloader. if you try to get into bootloader from adb for example, than there is only a black screen and after a few minutes it's just load the OS normally. but no bootloader.

So if you try the button combo I suggested, it eventually boots to OS? Are you still holding vol down when it boots to OS? If not, you should be (and let go too early).

What's the exact adb command? I'm sure you probably have it right, but just want to confirm.
It doesn't boot when i try the button combo... and after a few minutes it boot to OS.
also tried though an app because the device is rooted.... and also through RUU. The RUU restart the device and should make him to go into bootloader but it failes doing it.
adb reboot-bootloader
when the device is turned off the pc only see it as QHSUSB_BULK

It still really confusing how you are phrasing things "It doesn't boot . . . after a few minutes it boot"
Either it boots (just takes a long time; or boot OS, but not bootloader) or it doesn't.
Holding power + vol down makes it shutdown, right? Once the screen goes dark, hold only vol down and don't stop until you either see bootloader or the OS loads. Its not clear from the way you've typed it, but it sounds like you are pressing vol down for a while, then give up and let go, then it eventually loads OS.
I understand that it doesn't look like it wants to boot into bootloader, from any method. But we really need to eliminate all possibilities and be sure you can't do it with the button combo.
Its really unusual to see a device that can boot into OS, but not go into bootloader at all. I've never seen this once, after being on these forums extensively over the course of 4 different HTC Android devices.

Yes, Holding power + vol down makes it shutdown. After the screen goes dark, i tried to hold only vol down. nothing happends. tried to hold it for a few minutes. nothing.
When i release it, only after a few minutes, the device load the OS by itself (if i try to press the power button it doesn't work at all)

So how do you know whether releasing the button is a condition of it booting, or a coincidence?
For that matter, how do you know it won't go to bootloader if vol down is held when it finally powers on?
I'd say the answer to both those questions is: you don't know. At least, not for sure.
How long is a "few minutes"? 3 minutes? 10 minutes?
Maybe hold down the vol down button with some tape, if you can hold it down manually the whole time?
It's doesn't really Matter, as the adb/ruu/quick bot app should have be able to load the bootloader....

It does matter. As I already explained, you should eliminate all possibilities. At least I assume that someone who genuinely want to fix the phone would try every possibility.
You spent about as much time replying, as it would have taken to try my suggestion.
I agree, I don't think it will work. But you don't know if you don't try.
First off, I did do a search, but as far as I can tell no one has had this problem so far.
This is all after modding using a tool kit: (i can't include the url but it is the toolkit by neisor on the oneplus forums)
tldr: phone stuck in bootloop, computer wont recognize the phone, maybe because it keeps shutting off and then booting to the 1+ logo, then shutting off again, would drivers help? what can I do about the volume up button?
So for a while my volume up button hasn't been working, and the mega unbrick post shows that I need to hold the volume up button for at least 25 seconds and while holding, plug my phone in. I have also seen some posts that say the volume up button could be a software issue, and the button itself could be working, and it is just not registering, as well as someone saying that you could take the back off and manually press the button, instead of using the bar on the outside of the phone (would this work?). I have gotten the button to work in the past by pressing the volume up button to the side instead of straight in, but I haven't been able to get it to work since my phone got bricked.
Another issue: my phone is stuck in a boot loop, I can't access fastboot, and I'm unsure of recovery because my volume up button is not working. would it be worth it to deal with the constant vibrating to try to get it to recovery?
I have been able to shut the phone off by holding the power button for something like a minute and a half, though.
This is my first post, and if I have broken any rules I am very sorry, but I need help and am tired of not having a phone.
Thank you everyone,
Mark
Edit: this is what I did to root the phone:
1. download the toolkit
2. unlock bootloader (when fastbooting the phone said unlocked at the bottom, and a message about not being secure showed every time I rebooted the phone)
3. flashed twrp (no issues, still booted, recovery went to twrp. for some reason I had to flash multiple times as every now and then recovery would revert to stock op, although I did make a backup through twrp)
4. send supersu zip file to phone, install using twrp (phone would not boot, op logo stayed on phone for 2 hrs + until I rebooted to fastboot and tried to reinstall the backup I made, still nothing)
5. Try magisk (still stuck on op logo)
6. try to go back to stock, accidentally lock bootloader (now the phone is stuck in bootloop, don't know what to do from here as I cant get to fastboot and am unsure of recovery's accessibility.)
If you are sure you have a broken volume button, you need to replace it first in order to get the phone fix.
Correction:
Fastboot/bootloader = Power+Vol Up
Recovery = Power+Vol Down
This happened to me except I didn't even get anything appear on the screen -- the phone just periodically vibrated with the screen not even light up. I tried the reset toolkit which is meant to flash your phone back to normal using Qualcomm drivers or something, but that didn't work either. Eventually I had to send it to OnePlus who fixed it for free in under a week! They said the motherboard had failed.
I hope you get this fixed!
Thanks

thanks for the correction, I will keep trying the volume buttons, if it doesn't work by the end of today I will search for a new volume button.
Thanks again,

Damn, that sucks, and besides being unfixable (doubt it), this is my biggest fear. I'm in the US and really don't want to have to ship my phone to china to have it fixed. If you are in the US as well do you know if there is a OnePlus branch I can send it to in the US?
Thank you,
Mark

There seems to be one in Texas. Anyway, contact OnePlus and they may try to solve it over the air.
Apart from that, did you install the Qualcom drivers properly? Even with your faulty power button, try to hold it down for 40+ seconds (for the phone to switch off) and then immediately hold down the volume up button for 10 seconds and then plug in the phone to the PC. I know I am merely repeating the instructions of Naman Bhalla in his Mega Unbrick Guide but it is crucial to do them correctly especially the installation of the drivers. Try these steps repeatedly because for some people, the phone gets recognised after repeated attempts. Or else replace the power button and then try these steps.
I had to use the Guide last month and successfully resurrected my dead phone.

Can you boot into recovery by pressing power+volume down buttons?
Update: Got phone to show on computer as qualcomm under coms and ports
So last night I went ahead and held volume up for about 20 seconds, then plugged the phone in, keeping the volume up button pressed the entire time. my phone stopped bootlooping and showed up as a qualcom device! So I have downloaded the new driver the stock os, and am going to proceed to try to unbrick my phone.
Wish me luck,
Mark
Yes, I did, and its working so far

I still need to turn off the signed drivers features ( a huge bi*ch, I have to use another computer to contact microsoft or something to get my computer to load when I turn off safe boot or whatever its called), but once I do that I can install the driver and attempt to reinstall the stock os. Hopefully everything will go well.
Thank you,
Mark
Not as far as I know

So far recovery has not been loading, just the bootloop, but I have gotten the phone to power off by pressing the power button for 40 seconds, and the volume up button plus plugging in does make the phone register as qualcom 9008 or something like that. Basically everything is going well so far, and the faulty vol button seems to have been a software bug, as it does work when plugging it in. I will try to get to fast boot, but it did not work last time.
Thank you,
Mark

Glad to hear that there is some progress. Best of luck and keep us informed.
Hello hello,
Someone on another website told me to visit you guys here!
My Problem is as follows:
So around 6 hours ago my Pixel 6 pro decided to just turn itself off. I tried various methods of starting it, pressing different button combinations etc but it is completely unresponsive. I tried charging it for several hours but that also didn't do anything. The screen won't turn on at all.
The only sign of life that I have is when connecting my phone to my PC via USB and pressing all 3 buttons (Power, Volume up and down) then a device called "Pixel Rom Recovery" will pop up for a little bit. It disappears when letting go of the power button or after around 20 seconds. If I keep pressing the buttons it will apear again and do the same thing.
What I basically wanna know is:
Is there a way to still recover my data?
Is there a way for me to save my device?
I got some more or less important stuff on my phone and it would be a shame if it all was gone.
How ****ed am I?
Thank y'all for all your help!
Hi,
If you cannot turn on your phone, it'll be difficult to help you. Pressing other 30 sec power button doesn't run ?
In parallel did you contact the Google pixel support ?
It's not to scare you, but I had the same issue on a old Samsung S8 and it was the motherboard 🫤
Hope it's not the case for you !!

So this is in fact just an undocumented Emergency Download Mode that Google Custom Exynos SoC has natively built into it in case of the rare event of a bad boot loader.
I’ve been doing an extreme amount of research lately about bootROM’s, how they communicate, the Driver rule support for interfacing with the phone while it’s Pixel ROM Recovery. The viewable name for the Exynos USB DownLoading mode.
Can I get you to dm me on Telegram? It might be helpful to have more people. I’ll be glad to help in getting this figured out. It could help a lot of other people who don’t have a Pixel 6 too
I have the same issue after trying to update to 1205. I see the Pixel ROM Recovery and a COM port.
If you cannot enter fastboot mode, no way to recover your phone.
Was there a solution to this? The same thing happened to me. When I get to the bootloader and hit recovery the screen just goes black.
