Hey guys,
So I got a 'leather' skin from dbranz (I knew it wasn't leather), but it just wasn't enough for me. No one makes (nice) leather cases for our phone, so I thought I'd make my own.

Below is an attempt at an unbiased review. I will also show how I made it if it interests anyone else.
How I made it:
I downloaded a Xperia Z3C 3D model and began modelling a back case thing, along with hangover around the top and bottom edges (see pics).
Good thing, the back measurements were correct, however in my haste (and laziness), I assumed the 3D model was correct and so some things are out of place (fixed now for anyone who wants the files).
So, I made this back design, sent it to Ponoko.com and they laser cut it onto leather for me, and it's great!
Price was around $5 for cutting costs, $30 for leather and $5 for shipping (all USD). However if you're a new customer to Ponoko, you get $20 off your first order, which halves the cost to a reasonable $20USD.
The sheets come with a suede leather on the back with no adhesive, so I just used double sided tape to attach it to my phone, which worked better than I hoped. I used a craft scalpel to cut the excess tape out of holes etc. I must note the the laser almost burnishes the leather automatically, but when I was trimming the tape back, I cut a little leather off. It's not a huge deal, but might be nicer if you didn't.
Think that's it for the design...
Review (and pics):
First of all, it came out much better than I had hoped. It's a 1.5mm thin layer of what Ponoko call driftwood leather.
It feels like leather. It's soft to the touch, it's thick enough that there is a little give when you press into it, but thin enough to not to add thickness to the phone.
The Ponoko outlet I got it cut only had two types of leather available, with this being the best suited. However the USA store has many different types!
The laser cutting from Ponoko is fantastic. However I must note that the laser leaves a burned hair kind of smell on the cuts, but it is fading away, and I'm sure will totally go soon.
All in all, after a few days of having it, I can say it's $20 well spent and I can't wait for this to start ageing.
Pictures are here: http://imgur.com/a/QjMGx
Files and misc:
See attached Files below. I've made many variations so if someone isn't familiar with illustrator and laser cutting can do it simply. Ponoko give you a certain amount of leather to cut, and you can put whatever you want in it. I will try and fit on as many copies as I can (which will be no extra charge from Ponoko).
The files have options with Sony logo perimeter engraved, the entire area engraved, and no logo at all.
Also, the above options with and without the bottom wrap thing.
I'm willing to do requests (to a degree), so fee free to ask.
Very cool! My cousin just invested in his own 3D printer, and we've started thinking about designing/fabricating premium, genuine leather phone and tablet cases.
He's already designed, patented (pending) and is hand crafting/building his own portable, "hands free tablet" support device, the Ezilstien!
This cover looks great! Do you know, when they cut the leather, if they can give it a beveled edge, rather than such a rigid, unfinished edge? This cover could look so much nicer with a nice stitching or piping around the edges!
Check out these quick renderings I just threw together. (Using your photos as reference :good

Yeah, I wish they did bevels etc, but there are no options for that at this stage with Ponoko.
However, I suppose you could have an increasing engraving towards the end of the leather to simulate a bevel?

My kids love watching movies on my wife's phone and have dropped it a few times, but luckily no scratches or dents yet. Since there weren't many choices locally, I decided to get the "Black Silicone Case" from Amazon since it was around $4 shipped.
It shipped from Van Nuys, CA and took three days... which is a little odd because I'm in Hollywood, CA which is about 10 miles away... Thanks USPS!
The case is pretty thick and seems like it'll take a few drops. It's on par with other silicone cases in terms of feel. The fit is good, nice and tight, and ports all line up.

hows the quality?
I got the black Amzer jelly case from Amazon. IMHO the quality is perfect.
I got this one because it has the textured grip feel on the sides and because the corners are thicker. I figure that thicker corners would do better at shock isolation.
It's pretty good quality. The only other silicone case I've had some time with was for the Blackberry Bold and it was Blackberry branded. I'd say they're the same. I'd say it's the same as the Amzer one but a lot cheaper. I'm not a big fan of the Amzer cases because of the design on the silicone and their hard case having the extra material at the top, with hole for the sensors, it's bit tacky looking.
is it bendable or pretty stiff?

It's really soft, the edges around the screen give pretty easily. It's not soft to the point where the phone is going to pop right out, there's enough of a lip around the screen to keep that from happening. It's tight all the way around so the phone doesn't move around in it. Seriously though if you don't like it, you're only out $4. That was my reasoning anyway.
good point thanks! nice to have people give their reviews and deals on things

Black Silicone Case / Skin / Cover for Samsung Captivate SGH-I897
i went to a mall kiosk today and put my phone inside one of these and it is really slick... the lady seemed irritated that I didn't want to purchase it. feels like a dry-ish dolphin
The case I got was the opposite, it's pretty damn sticky... like sticks to your pant pockets or the inside pocket inside my wife's purse. Also picks up a ton of lint, dust, etc. I'm starting to dislike it...
^^^ I just received mine yesterday. I would have to agree with you on the lint part.
For $4 and change, I won't complain. This will have to do until I find a good hard shell.

Picked up one of this as well. I can't really complain for the price. It is a little sticky, but i'm not carrying this in my pocket much.

I got mine today. Great quality. It was exactly what I needed
I just ordered the set with the case, charger, and screen protector. Like kkeo and whitesedan I don't like the fact that it's pretty sticky and picks up lint pretty bad since I keep it in my top shirt pocket at work. I also don't like the seam where it's molded together. I'll need to take a razor to it so I can smooth it out. But then again for $6.19 shipped that's pretty good. It fit's perfect I just don't like how sticky it is. I'm still looking around for a case to replace it but this one works pretty good for the cost.
I have this same one and it's pretty good, a bit sticky though. The grip however in your hand is great, actually take photos better now because it grips so well. It's soft and easy to take off when I need to change the battery, (I bought this ebay $10 charger and dual extra batteries deal).

I ordered the following case from ebay. I had ebay bucks to spend so I gave it a shot. Review to come once I get it. It's synthetic leather but I don't really care as long as it fits and works well.
REVIEW HAS BEEN ADDED NOW. SEE POST # 3 BELOW.

Any updates mate?
It took some time (about two or two and a half weeks) to get this to NY but I know that the weather was probably a factor. That being said here is the review (please note that this is a SUBJECTIVE review and if you buy based on it and are unhappy I apologize but don't hold me responsible):
Overall I think the case is of great quality. It's durable feeling and makes me much more comfortable in rough handling the device (not literally of course).
The fit and finish is really great. It fits the device like a glove. The holes and slots line up perfectly.
Profile of the Archos is not effected greatly either. I mean of course the unit will be a little bulkier in the case and slightly heavier but not to the extent that it made me dislike it. The 101 is the slimmest tablet I have held so even a silicone case would feel bulky but this fit in a rather good way.
The horizontal stand is good but not great when comparing to the one built in to the device. That is because it's not as rigid and will slide if you are pressing too hard. That i to be expected I guess since it's not a rigid stand. It does the trick for most things though (like resting on my stomach while I'm using the 101 in bed.
The concept of the vertical stand is quite flawed. It works okay again if I am resting it against my raised legs while in bed but on a flat surface it doesn't stand straight. Not only doesn't it stand straight but using it is minimal without it falling back. (This is probably the biggest flaw).
****EDIT- I am giving it 9.5 stars now and taking back the above review regarding the vertical stand. I wasn't using it right. I looked at the picture and found that you have to use the horizontal stand to sturdy the vertical one. Did that and it was great.****
Overall I give this thing 9.5 out of 10 stars. The half star is missing because the vertical setup is still a little slanted but not majorly. I think it serves as a great case and gives confidence that it will protect the case. The memory card holders are cool and the fact that you can clasp the cover around the back so it doesn't dangle while using is great.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hmmm, I don't think it would but I had a screen protector so I didn't even think about it. I think everyone should put a screen protector on anyway but I think the cardholder has soft edges and will not scratch.
it looks bulky is it?
just a little bit

I'm going to write up a quick first impressions review for it and post it up here in a bit.
Review is here.
nice job. on the review you might want to compare the prices. was the price of the HC worth it?
I paid $52 with shipping, so it was about $5 more than I got the Defender.
I might end up getting this I'm on my second defender case the first interior shell cracked in one corner and the gel is not standing up to the heat in South Florida, left it in the car a few times and the gel fits oddly now. The Ballistics don't have the gel form fitting exterior so I doubt I'll have a problem with it.
I searched on Google Shopping and eBay and I found this case for $33.50 with regular expedited shipping. It actually arrived at my house in NJ from Texas a day earlier than it was expected.
At first, I was surprised at how much bigger it was than I thought it was going to be, but then I tried it out for a few days and I got use to it. If you want "maximum" protection, I would recommend buying this case. I use the whole setup with both the rubberized and the hard case. I haven't dropped it that many times and when I have it was usually on carpeted floors and occasionally from small heights so I really haven't tested out its durability and whatnot, but it doesn't look like it's going to break or anything. The plugs for the headphone jack as well as for the charging/HDMI ports are an awesome feature for keeping dust and water drops away from the actual phone. The only part I can find that is exposed is that fingerprint/lock button. I understand why, although I don't use the fingerprint feature, so it's not too bad.
It's pretty light and the supplied swivel clip is greatly appreciated, too. It is bulky enough to make it harder to get in and out of pockets so the clip works very nicely, especially since you put the screen facing in to provide as much protection as possible. I have tested how it fits and everything and it stays in the clip even when moving around, jumping, jogging, and shaking so I would say it works pretty well. There's a screen protector on the front part of the hard case, but it's almost as sensitive as the actual phone's screen so you don't have to press much harder than normal. The one other thing I didn't really like was that the HC's bottom was too close to the phone's touch buttons along the bottom, making it slightly harder to press them sometimes. If there was slightly more space between the two as well as a little less bulk, this would be the perfect case for protection and functionality.
Still, a great buy, I must say so myself. I definitely recommend it.
So after a week of having this on my phone the only thing that I could see someone not liking is the volume keys are harder to press. You really got to squeeze on them to get a press to register, but other than that, I really like this case. I might take the phone out and run a file on the bottom edge of the top of the finger print sensor hole. It sticks out a tad, and it kinda sharp. It's only a problem for me when the phone is in my dash mount and not in any car mode. When I swipe my finger "backwards" from the normal top of the phone to the bottom, the edge catches my finger and causes misreads. I think rounding it off a bit will help with that.
I have this case, and i must say - even though its bulky, it feels great in my hands. Its not as annoying as the otterbox defender is/was. it feels much more solid and well built. Also - its certified military grade protection. I got the black/black case in the mail about a week and a half ago - havent taken it off since i put it on! The holster is much better than the Otterbox defender also!
i originally had the shell gel before buying the hardcore. all i can say is this case is awesome!
although i kinda wished the plastic inner case had the rubber port covers as well though, since the whole rubber case makes the thing too chunky for my liking.
one other thing i didnt like is the included screen protector. first, i didnt realise it was attached to the case, lol. but my main issue with it is that it kinda messes with the display a bit. not too sure how to describe it, but it has the random colour pixels that you'd normally see if you had water on your screen. im sure after a week of wearing it in, this should go away.
the thing that annoyed me the most was that for like 3 months, ballistic had a black and red one listed on their website. now all of a sudden, it doesnt exist.
I've searched high and low for a case that suited me and my Note and eventually found a very nice case from Tridea on eBay. I received a couple of days ago and think that it looks and performs great. You can find it by searching on Tridea.Essentially it's a hard bumper in a nice sort of faux suede flip case. I went for the gray version.
It's a bit pricey at £25 and it took a couple of weeks to arrive from South Korea but I've yet to see a case that looks anywhere near as good for the money.
I just bought one too! It should arrive within a week, I got the same color as you did. I'm glad you like it, because it makes me more excited to get mine
I wanted this case more than most others but my number one issue with them all is that very few have a cut out for the ear piece!! not even a notch, i want my face oils off the screen and not have to hold the flap back on a call, simple design i would think, sigh.
I love this case, I bought the grey one as well. I do wish it had a hole for the speaker though.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Hmm, the front flap does fold round the back when using it to make calls and even gives a bit more of a better grip on the phone so I'm not that bothered about it not having a notch for the earpiece.
lamou1nr: As far as a hole for the speaker goes, it's got one but I guess you meant the same as Mrglass86.
I like the case because 1) it looks good 2) it's very light 3) it offers good bumper protection with the addition of a cover for the front that also keeps the screen clean. 4) it feels really nice and solid without adding a load of bulk to the phone.
I don't see the fascination with the aluminium bumpers. They don't look as though they'd offer any protection in a drop.
I like some of the Zenus cases (it was either the Tridea or the Zenus Capsule case) but they're expensive and the diary types just seem like a bit of a gimmick - would you really keep your cash and cards in the same case as your Note? Not me!
Until otterbox or a similar maker comes up with a really tough aluminium case I'm happy to stick with the Tridea.
If you fold it too often it will eventually get loose or have lines along the edge. Another issue with all such book-like case is that we cannot use our thumb to operate the phone anymore.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Just ordered it. I hope it'll arrive sooner than expected.
Anybody bought this kind of Tridea case? Available on eBay for $22.

Wow I dont normally like flip cases but this one looks very nice. Not sure if i'll fork out for one as i've already got cases for it but can you guys post pictures when you get it, i'll get a better idea than from the ebay pics
Just thought I'd follow up on my OP. I've been using this case for almost a couple of months. The phone gets a lot of use by me and is constantly being taken in/out of my pockets. I'm happy to say that the case is holding up well. I think that the 'spine' of the cover would be the first part to go since it's the part that gets the most stress.
After two months the fabric along the spine has been smoothed but doesn't look bad, kind of what you'd expect really, it 'weathered'. There is some very thin rubber edging that runs along the edge of the whole case and this has initially split on the spine hinge area but it has only come off in one tiny section. It's hardly noticeable.
The main thing is that it's protected my Note very well. I don't expect a huge lifespan from it (at least the cover) but the bumper around the note will last. I may utilise a bit of gaffer tape to strengthen the spine and you could do this without spoiling the aesthetic if you do it properly. I may also use some rubber spray that I bought from Amazon which is really useful stuff (it coats whatever you spray in a matt rubber coating). One last thing to mention is that some people were bothered that you couldn't get to the volume controls while the case was shut, well you can press the rocker through the spine without any problem so you can use the volume control even with the Note in your pocket. I'll update this if I notice anything further degradation but all-in-all I like this cover a lot still.
My case has also held up reasonably well. It provides great protection. I too had the rubber on the edge ware off but only on the "hinge" of the cover. The only other part that is showing signs of age is the metallic plastic piece that is on the back, it has a few scuffs and a chip. For a flip case this is one of the best.
Anyone hear of Head Case Hard Back Case's??? They are in the UK and make cases for many devices including the Galaxy Note 10.1
They are selling on Ebay with free shipping, prices are from $7.95 to $10.95 us., for that price I may take a risk on one or two,
Here are a few examples of the hard back cases, they have 100's to choose from.

I still have not, it just not a priority as I'm happy with the cases that I have now. But I am very curious of the quality myself.
.
I have bought a couple for my gf's note1 and my razr phone. The case is so so, and the sides of the case are white despite the design of the back being colored.
I Bunch of cool designs wish they have a front protector built in to protect the screen when not in use

I did order one, it took about 10 days for delivery to USA from the UK.
I got the purple one shown above, it is very thin with the bottom and top edge completely open.
The sides wrap around the front to attach the case. The design coating on the back feels tacky and less likely to slip from your hand.
The inside of the hard back is white and the right and left sides have a strip that is about 3/16 that is also white.
Did not expect much for the price, and I probably got my moneys worth.

Would you say this is decent enough protection for while it's in use, and should still be put in a sleeve or other case when tossed in a bag?
Do you happen to also have the keyboard dock? If not, does it appear to add too much thickness to be able to dock while still protected? That's my only complaint about my folio case, is having to remove it from the holder whenever I want to use the keyboard dock. I figure it's only a matter of time before the case holder snaps or something from the constant in/out

There is no screen cover or protection. You would have to use a sleeve to travel with it. I do not have a keyboard dock but it may work.
I use it when at home while playing racing games, my 360 case is just to bulky and awkward when playing these types of games. I don't have to worry about setting in down for a few minutes on a hard surface if I need to take a call or something like that. I also have a jelly case that just covers the back but this one is much thinner. It is about 3/64 of an inch thick.
