I use my Mobile Hotspot to tether my Nexus 7 tablet in my car. I am running 5.0.1 Lollipop.
As soon as I turn the car off, the Mobile Hotspot turns off and the WiFi is turned on again. The phone will connect to my home wireless hotspot but there is no data tranfer.
Instagram says "Can't refresh feed" and Chrome cannot connect to the web.
In order to fix the problem I usually need to restart the device and then it will connect to WiFi will full connectivity again.
Any ideas?
Is my Mobile Hotspot locking something up in Android, like the MAC Address or IP Address or something until I reboot?
I've come across a quick fix I suppose. If I follow the steps below then I don't need to reboot the device to get the WiFi to work again:
1) Turn off Wifi before enabling Mobile Hotspot
2) Enable Mobile Spot
3) Turn off Mobile Hotspot when finished with it
4) Manually re-enable WiFi once Hotspot is off
Seems the issue stems from keeping the WiFi on when enabling the Mobile Hotspot. The Note 4 will automatically disable WiFi and re-enable WiFi on it's own if you do not manually disable the WiFi beforehand thus leading to the no internet connection issue.
Still curious what the actual issue is though.
UPDATE 10/14/2015: Seems as though the method I described above does not even work as a foolproof method for getting the WiFi to work properly again after hotspotting. Reboot is the only way to get it to work again. It's very temperamental.
I have been experiencing this same issue. I didn't link it to turning the mobile hotspot on and off until you mentioned it. I also have to reboot the phone to make Wi-Fi work again.

Hi new to the forums but have found them incredibly useful so far. Noticed a couple of weeks back an issue with my WiFi hotspot app where when it is turned on (with mobile data already enabled and working) it claims there is no network availability on the app and my laptop is unable to access the internet through it despite being connected wirelessly.
Strangely enough I can still access mobile data through the internet app whilst its running. I found I could solve this by turning mobile data on and off whilst the wifi hotspot is active and then disconnect/reconnect my laptop and it will work perfectly fine. The app will say connected to mobile internet. Intruigingly if I turn the mobile data off in settings and turn wifi hotspot on, I can access the internet on the phone but it will initially come up with the "connection failed" pop up and then continue to load the page, despite not apparently being connected.
It's no deal breaker but not sure if anyone has experienced this issue yet, anyone found a fix?
I got same problem dunno realy what is problem was working good then it just startet turning off my mobile network any fix for this ?
I had the same problem. Im using an app called 'Wifi Tether' and it works fine and its alot quicker, your phone needs to be rooted though.
Link Here
I will try didnt rooted the phone but i will tnx for answering
Ive searched the web and read about countless issues about lollipop wifi. but im looking for something specific which i cannot find elsewhere:
on KitKat when connecting to a hotspot (or any wifi for that matter) it would instantly connect to wifi and switch to that connection, regardless if the connection gave internet access or not.
on LP it seems to remain connected to mobile data and wifi does not give an IP address until a hotspot is logged in (using the sign in to wifi notification)
the problem is it doesnt always show, is there a way to switch the wifi policy to not perform a soft handover? or does this need to be baked into a rom?
I have an app that auto-logs into wifi hotspots for me, but because it does not get an IP address and apps are not able to use that connection, it does not work as intended.
FYI i am NOT talking about wifi to mobile data handover, its the other way around
Hello, as the title suggests, has anyone achieved VPN connection tethering thru wifi? I can't seem to make VPN Hotspot(an app by a developer here on XDA) work, but by using PDANET+, it works. Can anyone help me?
Works fine for me.
Here's my setup. I'm subscribed to NordVPN, and use an app called TetherNet VPN. Must be rooted. The key is to go into Developer settings, and turn off "tethering hardware acceleration."
It also depends on the order that you do things:
1) turn on your mobile hotspot, and connect your computer or whichever device you want, I usually let it stay connected for 10 min or so before step 2)
2) Connect to your VPN
3) Open TetherNet VPN and tap "Share VPN on Hotspot."
4) Enjoy fast, unlimited tethering.
When you wish to turn it off. I find it best to turn off the hotspot first, then disconnect from VPN tethering. Data connection gets a little wonky if you disconnect from VPN first. Also helps to reboot the device afterward.
It's a bit of a procedure, but well worth it if you ask me to get around Verizon's BS games.
Not possible for root? With PdaNet+, the client device doesn't see the hotspot.

Many thanks for this. Your app seems to work. The app VPN Hotspot doesn't work for me for some reason.
My device is on Android 5.1.1 and VPN Hotspot requires some newer operating systems.
I'm using my Nexus 5x as a hotspot for a raspberry pi. Everything works fine, the phones hotspot connects to the mobile data OK and the raspberry pi connects to the hotspot and can use the mobile data. The issue I'm having is that the hotspot seems to die after 6 hours. It still looks active but the raspberry pi can not access the internet. I've connected to the hotspot with another phone and it cant get to the internet via the hotspot either. Turning on aeroplane mode on the Nexus 5x and then turning it off again corrects the problem and everything can then access the internet again via the hotspot.
Can anyone help correct this issue or failing that is there a way of scheduling the hotspot/aeroplane mode to stop and restart automatically?
Grateful for any suggestions, thanks.
Well it looks like there have been a few views but no suggestions. Can anyone give me any ideas how to debug this? Or maybe another rom that might give me the same functionality but allow me to schedule turning on/off the hotspot?
Hello one more time team
Here I'm reporting another annoying bug with my device
I have tried many time to create or make a 5ghz hotspot work
My external devices can see others 5ghz network but even when i create it with the RM5S, It is not visible.
I have done a network reset on the phone, check and unchecked the "support 6th generation" option in the tethering options and it just does not work
2.4ghz works fine
I have reported the issue via ticket but I guess will not be solved as my previous tickets
Anyone with the same issue?
Attaching evidence

some countries do not allow the use of personal 5g wifi tethering. its possible you live in one of these countries? the feature is blocked on the rom if you are in a country that does not allow it.

Hey Patrick
Thanks again for your answer
I read about that limitation in a oneplus forum but I don't really know how to check that.
Actually, i can add something to my issue
While i am reporting the hotspot issue, i must said i am able to share a "connected" wifi using the 5ghz band WHEN (Sorry for the big letters) in use an app called "vpn hotspot"
I dont want to confuse you
I dont need the vpn hotspot app to create a normal hotspot. But the default settings of RM ROM does not let me create the 5ghz connection.
When i connect to a 5ghz router at home, i can "create" another wifi 5ghz network using "vpn hotspot" app (i usually do this cause i need a vpn network for many devices)
The main problem is with mobile data. When i am not at home, the vpn hotspot app does "IS NOT" allowed to modify the system settings for the hotspot created by the rom, it only replicates the original setup and bypass the VPN traffic
So, going back to the original issue, i am not sure if it is a country restriction. I usually live.in Hungary but i am now in poland and i received the device on this last country.
I would even wonder how to create the hotspot using the wifi 6 standard as it should be supported as well.
Thanks for the feedback

sounds like the VPN software you're using is interfering with the creation of the hotspot.
if the 5g hotspot wifi works as intended using the normal hotspot settings on the phone without the VPN, then it would make sense that its the VPN app thats causing the issue.
I can create and use both 2.4g and 5g wifi hotspots, sharing my Mobile network. it works correctly. i do use DNS 66 to block adverts but thats the only VPN type software i use, and its only for black listing adverts and inbedded video adverts on sites.
so test the hotspot settings with the normal phone settings with the VPN off or uninstalled. - if this works correctly. the problem is with your VPN software. you would need to contact support for that app.
some devices do not work with wifi 6 option enabled. turning it off may increase connectivity issues.

Well. I know there was going to be some confusion.
The hotspot does not work with 5ghz even without vpn.
When i use my home wifi, I connect from my phone (no mobile data) to my vpn provider and then with another app, "vpn hotspot" (root required) i can share the vpn traffic to external devices via hotspot. When I do these steps sometimes 5ghz works, and i say sometimes cause I left the "vpn hotspot" wifi setting as default. I might change some network options there but, those options are not available for hotspot within "vpn hotspot" this is why i am blaming the ROM, But maybe you are right and there is some interference between apps. I will try to flush the settings one more time
I have flushed the rules of the vpn hotspot app and tried again. Working fine with and without vpn!
Thanks
I see.
You are trying to filter your wifi connection at home through your phones wifi and share thst connection to other wifi devices.
I dont believe it will work correctly. you're essentially trying to create a wifi repeater.
You're making your wifi chip do 2 things, and its unable to run two streams at the same time.
It state in the Hotspot settings
" Use hotspot to provide internet to other devices through your mobile data"
If you want to connect to your home wifi with your phone, and share thst connection with another device you must use USB tethering.
You risk causing damage to your wifi chip trying to force two connections on it.
using repeater apps, does cause the signal strength to degrade, (bacause you're using the same antenna to receive your home wifi and to create its own wifi. limiting the bandwith and can cause connection issues over time.
the wifi chips in android phone can create a repeating wifi signal, but they're not made to do it. normally as stock android runs when you enable wifi hotspot, it stops the current wifi connecting to create a new wifi access point. using apps to get around that may cause issues and even damage as i stated above. if your wifi chip breaks due to improper use, it will need a warranty return.
