So I just bought the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus. It is yakju and I am using it with AT&T. No matter how many times I've tried I cannot get the phone to do an OTA update to at least 4.0.2, let alone 4.0.4. So I have a couple questions, keeping in mind that I am not particularly interested in rooting and would rather just do an OTA update.
1. Will the 4.0.2 update eventually come through if I wait? I don't mind waiting, but I don't want to wait indefinitely without making any progress.
2. If I do want to or need to do a manual update, can I go straight from 4.0.1 to 4.0.4?
Like I said, I would prefer to wait for the OTA update as I'm having no issues with 4.0.1 right now.
On a completely unrelated note, I have 14 days to return this phone. If you were me, would you return it and wait for the One X. I like the idea of having a raw android Google phone, but the One X seems attractive.
I think you should get an iphone.
iphone. helping computer illiteracy become popular since 2007.
I received my Nexus about a week ago. Within 5 minutes of turning it on I received the 4.02 OTA update. 10 minutes later I was rooted and running CM9 so I can't say if I would have received the 4.04 OTA update.

get stock images and flash to 4.0.4.
search the forums on how to do that.

There are already lots of spammy nerd bashing threads on this topic. No one can make this decision for you.
You have a few options....
1. Download Factory images for 4.0.4 from Google and use Galaxy Nexus Toolkit to flash (you will lose all your data and pictures, videos, music)
2. Root your phone (you'll still lose your data because you have to unlock your bootloader)
3. Wait for the 4.0.2 update than the 4.0.4 update
Your choice
When you get the HTC One X you gonna be saying how much you wish you had AOSP

Or when Android 5.0, "when will One X be getting Android 5.0?!"
Same Here
I guess were both on the same boat Except i am on Tmobile. As soon as i unboxed and setup my Gnex this past friday i was expecting an OTA update to 4.0.4. But appearantly that wasn't the case as i am still stuck on 4.0.1 two days later. I am really hoping i get that OTA soon...there is no way i am rooting ever again. My last phone which was a Samsung Vibrant had a custom ICS rom...everything was well until i was greeted by the deadly "Encryption Unsuccessful" screen not knowing what to do i hit reset phone. 1 min later my phones only use was as a door stop.
I know this may sound kind of silly but maybe we haven't received our updates because its the weekend . Im waiting till monday to see if i get the OTA update. Hopefully it arrives soon.

Most OTAs roll out in groups. Well at least from the last time I did a OTA .. I guess thats how they still work. Only so many users get them at a time. Not everyone who has a gnex get it at once

Now that I see other people having this problem, I think OTA updates for 100% stock Android 4.0.1 Samsung i9250 Galaxy Nexus are just not happening at all for now... (verbiage/garbiage deleted
As for my Nexus One(s)... (I'll just say I never saw this happen)
EDIT:
At about 8pm MDT (GMT-06:00) in the US, my i9250 finally updated from 4.0.2 to 4.0.4. I consider this an important validation of the integrity of my device. Earlier today I flashed 4.0.2 but still had to wait.
So clearly there was a period of days (March 30 to April 2 at least) that OTA updates where not happening for the i9250. This was alarming because I've rolled my i9250 back to 100% stock Android 4.0.1 several times after playing with different ROMs. Each time it quickly updated to 4.0.2. This time it took a few days. For a while I was worried my phone had a problem.
I just rolled back to a stock ROM 4 days ago.
But did only get 1 OTA update immediately after first boot. The one from ITL41D to ITL41F (4.0.1).
No OTA to 4.0.2 or even 4.0.4 yet. (All imgs are stock ITL41F with locked bootloader of course)
Had one this morning and accidentally hit accept. I was half asleep and went through its process, about 10 minutes, actually seemed like 5 and rebooted. Says 4.0.4 and I swear it said 4.0.1 before.
Only had this phone less than 2 weeks. Not sure what the update really did. Cant notice a difference.....which is good, because I was loving the experience thus far.

That update came out a few weeks ago. 4.0.4 is the latest official.
Gotcha, must have hit me late because I just got it? Thanks man.

I had an update available today as well, my version already says 4.0.4...waiting for phone to charge enough now to let me install it. Will let you guys know what happens
edit:
It installed and came back saying the same version number. Not sure if it was additional updates from T-Mo or not
Haven't heard any news of an ota to the gsm devices. Are they not getting it or am I not? I run a custom kernel and are rooted... but I have seen no news of a galaxy nexus ota.
Sorry if I missed the thread.
Thanks.

The OTA hasn't started rolling for any GNex devices. There's an image if you're on takju, but no OTA.
Nexus S ota lower memory use! Much better performance.
Just installed Jelly 4.1.2 on Nexus S device last night. I'm posting here to provide my experience. This phone is running like a new, better device. It is using half, HALF the sys memory than before. So far just sweet goodness. I recommend this update to all. Absolutely no problems thus far. I've tried things it didn't like in the past and it just keeps chugging along. I swear, EveryThing is faster. Will test batt life today when I go out, then report. This is only a .01 update! WOW! Thank you Google. Thank you T-Mobile. F'in awesome job. That is all.
I found a cwm that flashed system a while back and used that to upgrade to this version.

tofmiller... Very Slight exaggeration : )
I understand. This thing has what 334mb avail for apps to RUN not store. Before OTA update, was using task managers and restarts to keep around 50-70 mb free. After update, without intervention, phone says around 100 mb free. I exaggerated a bit but not that much. I find, also, the system keeps things freed up. I have not killed any apps or cleared cache since I got the OTA last night. I got the update in the afternoon then went to my 27" iMac to try to get a feel of how well things were going for others.Things looked sort of OK, but not much info so I decided to pull the trigger last night around 8pm Pacific. Proceeded to run it ragged. Streaming movies to my Mac via Wi-Fi, no problem. Played the only 3 games I have installed right now, no problem. Checked mem, 92 mb free! Made sure all apps were not running, only Skifta. It's been over 12 hours, no prob.
So, for me, this old dog got a shot of steroids. I'm thinking this will probably be last u/d for this device.(but that's what I thought about 4.1.1). If some app devs stay cool, don't think I'll get new device 'till after my contract fully expires. Was thinking about upgrading handset at earliest time. Couple months before end. Now... i can get better deal from carrier. Or jump ship to Big Red. Just wanted to put some helpful info out there because it looked like most people were side-loading this thing.
Been trolling for some time. Finally found something worthy of this outstanding site. Usually-"I'M NOT WORTHY"
Started with Nexus 1(now wife's) Bought rebuilt Nexus S because of running out of memory all the time.Pulled the T-Mobile Sim out stuck it in here and it immediately started d/l 4.04. Wow Really didn't expect that, now this... NEXUS BABY-- ALL THE WAY. Tablet next! Hope I helped. usually -I'M NOT WORTHY-
I'm on stock GSM 4.1.1 and I'm a little concerned I haven't gotten 4.1.2 OTA yet. Any ideas?
I thought the manual flash from the website wipes your data.
Mr. ruggersvpunk ? I can't believe i'm gonna say this....
Hello ruggervpunk ?
I'm usually (or used to be) quite impatient about these sort of things. I've been using a Mac since 1986(not the same one : ) and had to have the latest greatest thing. Over time I've learned a tiny bit of patience. I've found in almost every case it's best to wait a bit.. Smarter to let those without some restraint be the guinea pigs. This has saved my ass in recent years. So, I guess I would advise you to wait for the OTA. Things can go wrong when loading from a website. I've done it(with my wife's phone) and once I thought i bricked it. If not for the Grace of God and this site, it would still be in that state.
So sir? Try to wait. 1 it's totally worth it , I don't know who your carrier is but if you've received an OTA before, you'll get it again. Just got mine yesterday from T-MOBILE. So far, everything works better. Much better than an unexpected .01 update. This has done as much or more in performance than 4.0.4 to 4.1.1. Really. Give it a couple of days. Good things come to those who wait. That's just a guy in S.F. who loves gadgets advice.
Good Luck
Richard
It rolls out in phases. The factory image will wipe data. But there is a cwm file that updates boot and system. Its essentially the ota except larger since its the entire system.

“Samsung Canada announced today the upcoming availability of the latest update for the GALAXY Note II smartphone, which offers Multi Window allowing users to interact with two separate applications simultaneously.
The OS update (Android 4.1.2) gives customers the ability to personalize and customize their smartphone experience and interact with two apps at the same time. Samsung Canada now allows GALAXY Note II customers to change app positions within the Multi Window in addition to having the capability of using Pop Up Video while using Multi Window.
Also, included in this software update is the inclusion of both simplified and traditional Chinese language support. Easily accessible from the device’s settings menu, the software can change the language for most menus and applications and also support handwriting of Chinese characters to be transposed into text.”

Finally they get around to it lol. The guesses as why Samsung Canada delayed though was because of those kernel exploit and possibly the sudden death brick bug as well. So even though they don't say so, hopefully the update includes those fixes.
UGH! My phone still hasn't gotten back from the service center though, dyeing without my Note II, on the upside though It should be returned to me with whatever is the latest firmware so hopefully I see it in the mail by the end of this week and it has the update on it >.<
I was going to do a system dump of whatever firmware they put on it to for others to have but might seem a moot point now if the update goes live to ppl next week. Unless the one I get is a beta build beyond what they release *fingers Crossed* hoping for the best Lol.
grr, i already rooted and now my phone can't recieve OTA updates without me flashing back to stock and wiping the phone. I hope Sammobile gets the new rom when its released so that i can update via ODIN. I noticed that they still don't have the new AT&T update...
Apparently this update improves the already stellar battery life. Anyone with 4.1.2 confirm?

It's not a huge difference... I mean, you're not going to milk an extra 2 hours out of it or anything, but that being said it doesn't seem to drain quite as fast (tested with a full charge cycle). Again, this is based off of a custom ROM (pretty much stock with the hubs removed since they don't seem to like modified ROM's anyway) using N7105XXDLL7 as a base with a modded Rogers CSC (provides APN settings, a couple of specific tweaks for the network, and the My Account app -- everything else was stripped out). It also seems to fix the issue where screen power saving mode wouldn't immediately turn off if you disabled power saving (animations were a bit sluggish).
As for the official update... we will have to wait and see.

LJ5 was a 4.1.1 build if I remember correctly, and this update is supposed to be 4.1.2.
So I got my phone back from the service center today. It only came loaded with 4.1.1 LJ5 sadly. For some reason the multi-window wouldn't even work either.
Even worse the service center damage my phone and left a gash on the bottom, and they didn't even replace the battery which was the problem in the first place... So now its back off to them to fix the damage they did, just ridiculous...
Hopefully the update coming out next week isn't an old LJ5 Release from an October build that would be insanely retarded.
Supposedly its to be a 4.1.2 release build from December. Here's hoping for it :/

Didn't look, was too busy being pissed at Samsung for the damage to my phone. So beyond the about section on my phone I didn't look at anything else.
I've already made a ticket with them, and its been sent off to them again. Wasn't thinking about other information or dumping files.
@Dazog
If its supposed to a 4.1.2 release it wont be an LJ(number or letter) release, the J in the firmware = October build, if its a December 4.1.2 release it will be an LL something release. A lot of the international Note II's released with LL4 so I'm expecting that one or an later build. Just half to wait and see >.<
I bought an unlocked Note 2 in the summer of 2013.
I happily used it until Christmas when it 'disappeared' in our house. My toddler daughter had hidden it somewhere.
Despite turning the house upside down it was never found and I reluctantly moved backwards to older phones I already had.
Nearly 2 years later and a builder found it hidden away in our spare room.
I know have my phone back which has been in hibernation for 18 months. It is running 4.4.1 and my question is this.
Despite it now being old I would like to upgrade the firmware to the best I can for the device without it slowing down. Please can someone recommend an upgrade and where I can find it. Phone is not rooted so will I have to do this?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Good news that you found your phone. Probably your firmware is 4.1.1 and not 4.4.1 because 4.4.1 not exist and also you have to update this firmware immediately because of sds bug. If you don't know about it Google it. There are plenty of roms at forum and also plenty of instructions how to flash a custom rom and also how to update at latest official if you don't prefer custom.

Thanks for your reply Vagsvag. Just checked and it's running 4.4.2. I think it automatically upgraded something when I turned it on and logged in for the first time (sorry I'm not very savvy). In your opinion will this suffice or is there a newer platform I can safely download. I did a cursory bit of research on Google and it looks like 'Android L' is the last one offered for the Note 2, but I couldn't see if it was ever confirmed. I'll do some more research on here. I'd rather not load up a custom rom as when I did that to my last phone (S2 and the Lite'ning Rom) the phone became very glitchy. Perhaps things have improved in the last 5 years.

4.4.2 is the latest official, for newer version of Android you must go to custom rom, cm or aosp, there are also some roms transfered from official s3 firmware android version 4.4.4. My opinion is if you are ok with speed, response etc stay with this only root it to remove junk apps and block the ads. Now if you want something little bit more fresh you can try cm base, one of the more stable is Ivan_Meler's cm 12.1 at original android forum.

Thank you for all your help. I've rooted the phone which seems to make everything quicker. I'll stick with 4.4.2 for now but will have a look at CM12.1 at some point.
