Moto X like Ambient display?

I have a Moto X 2013. It doesn't have all the fancy features of the Moto X (2014) or even the Nexus 6, but I believe it made use of its sole proximity sensor to perform a really slick implementation of Moto Display. It used the proximity sensor to identify when you are picking up the phone or when your hand is close to the phone and accordingly show the time on the screen. It also pulsated the notification on screen when there was a notification. Very responsive and efficient. Is there some app that can emulate this for the Nexus 5X? Why not use the Nexus's proximity sensor all the time like the Moto X to identify when we are picking up the phone? What is the limitation here?

since Moto X 2013 used an Amoled display. It could turn on few pixels on the screen to show you pulsated notifications and not drain the battery or heat up the device, Nexus 5x unfortunately uses a LCD screen so turning on few pixels on the screen is out of the question even if someone force the feature onto N5X it'll led to Huge battery drain + Heat up so in short ITS NOT POSSIBLE.

The 2015 Moto X has a LCD display and functions just as the 2013 Moto X did with an AMOLED display. The '15 didn't heat up and the battery drain wasn't as bad as you would think. However, the whole display turning on was annoying and one of the reasons I turned Moto Display off and eventually sold the phone.

I wasn't even talking about '15 version. Though you answered it yourself.

That does not answer my question. I am fully aware that due to the LCD screen, it cannot just turn on some pixels. But, what I want is an app that can use the proximity sensor to identify when we are using the phone or picking up the phone and then turn the screen on for displaying the notification. That should be doable right?

You suggested that the 5X would heat up and it would kill the battery because of the screen tech. You are wrong. The 2015 moto x is the proof. RIF, princess.

You might want to take a look at Gravity Screen, from the Play Store.

I use Dynamic Notifications on my old GNex that I have lying around. It works pretty much like the moto x's active display. There are options to have it sense when its pulled out of your pocket or picked up off a table, but I don't remember if those are only in the full version or the free one as well.

Thanks, I tried it and seems to work. But also, it seems to be a little aggressive with the turning the display off thing that my display seems to turn off very very quickly even when I am using it.

I will try this out as well.

@PiousInquisitor I assume you haven't tried Tap2wake feature on ElementalX ? It eats alot of battery life hence heating up my device not that much but still. Do your research before you reply kid
BTW With Moto X 2014 there is something with the Display that doesn't cause it to heat up. Just like on G2,G3,G4.

Tap to wake and Moto Display are two different things, tiger. Try again.

Is Ambient display like on stock marshmallow what you want then?
Lights up the screen in a sort of monochrome to display time/notifications only on lock screen when you pick up the phone.

"AC display" app is a great substitute for moto display. Combined with double tap2wake when phone is out of pocket and you're all set.

It does not eat *a lot* of battery, just a tiny bit. And does not heat your device at all.

Touch screen sensitivity

On the Oneplus One we had a lower touchscreen sensitivity (not ghost touches) than on other flagship devices. Nothing big but still noticable. For example i could you my old S3 also with the fingernails with the fingers upside down.
I already ordered a 1+3 but I wanted to ask people who already have the device how the sensitivity is compared to other flasghips or midrabge devices.

I've upgraded from a Nexus 5 so I can't compare the phone with other new flagships. However, you are able to use the touchscreen with your fingernail. I have noticed it is more sensitive than my old phone. I hope this gives you some indication.

Nexus 5 touch is good. My friend has it. But if you say that its possible to use it with fingernail im very happy. It isnt possible with the 1+1.

That sensitivity results in me not being able to use Gestures, since keeping it in my pocket keeps the phone awake (cpu usage = battery drain, heating up) .

That seems to be a problem with the fingerprint sensor, not the display. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/help/oneplus-3-loses-energy-inside-pocket-t3403583
It happens to me also, but with ambient display and all gestures switched off...

Oh well...it might be that I kept my phone faced outwards after I disabled the Gestures. Damn.

Differences in the Pixel 2 vs Nexus 6P

I noticed two major differences (so far) between my old Nexus 6P and the new Pixel 2 XL (my first Pixel, so I do not know if the Pixel 2 is different from the original Pixel):
- the recovery menu does not have a menu item to clear the cache partition;
- there is no option to require a PIN or pattern before the operating system boots.

I'd like to know also.
Which one has better loudspeakers?
Which one is easier to read under direct sunlight?
Which one has deeper/stronger vibration sensation?
Feels better than the other?

It's really hard to justify $900+ for a Pixel 2 XL just to get water resistance and slightly faster hardware.

There is no longer a cache partition on newer versions of android, I believe this goes for all phones running Oreo and up. As for the pin before the OS boots up, I never used or knew about that with my 6P, unless you're talking about having to enter a pin at the lockscreen after boot. I would have to say the 6Ps speakers were a little bit better in my opinion. The Pixel XL 2 is definitely better in direct sunlight. As for the vibration, I feel like both are a little weak but the 6Ps vibration was terrible until it was increased using a kernel tuner, the XL 2 on the other hand is already at 100%, I'd have to give vibration strength to the XL2. The XL2 feels much lighter in my hand compared to 6P. The 6P is also plagued with the dreaded early shutdown issue due to badly manufactured battery, mine used to shut down as high as 50%

2 main points to me are.....the Nexus 6P was a throttling POS with terrible battery life, the Pixel 2 XL is not. Everything else is whatevs.

I had 6P and it was shutting off randomly. Pixel 2XL was the obvious choice for a replacement. After using it for about 3 weeks, I must say that the battery life is superb, especially compared to the 6P. I would have to use this phone HEAVILY throughout the day for me to drain it out. And the camera is fantastic as well.

The 6P was my first ever Android phone and maybe it was just being new to the Android world in general but I absolutely loved that phone. It did start shutting down around 30% and had some heating/throttling issues, but other than that I loved that thing! Speakers were insanely loud, PureNexus on that was super smooth and stable, and I loved the design of it overall.
Going to the XL right after wasn't too bad except for the partitions causing slower development. Seeing all the stuff available for the 6P, it was kind of a let down not having as much stuff to modify and tweak.
Went to the OnePlus 5/5T and they were good but the camera on the 2XL got me to switch.
Now that devs are more familiar with the A/B layout, development isn't so lacking and it's not too bad on the user's end either. I'm really satsified with this phone, no screen issues like many are having and the blue tint is very slight, so it's a non-issue for me.
All-in-all, I probably could have went from the 6P to the 2XL, skipping the OG XL, but it is what it is. I guess this way I was able to get familiar with the slot layouts myself with the XL, so dealing with the 2XL didn't feel like such an obstacle to overcome.

I've used iPhone all my life and this Nexus 6P is my first android phone. Got it after I saw the neighbour kid using it.
Damn the speakers are super loud.
The pure Google OS is superbly fine.
Everything is great. I don't have have any battery issue + the fast charging is an awesome thing for someone like me.
BUT, THE VIBRATION SUCKS.
I'm a Motorcyclist. And I loved iPhone for it. The vibration is so deep that you cannot miss a call.
Nexus 6P is fine when I'm driving but any other time when I'm on motorcycle, or home or anywhere the vibration does not even feel in pocket.
How did you managed to increase it?
Any pointers? That'd be very helpful.
I was thinking of getting a smartband to get notified for calls. [emoji849]

Root it, install a custom kernel like Ex, Flash, or Kylo use the EXKM app, and increase the vibration settings. Done

My take on the 6P vs 2 XL?
I love my 6P running Pure Nexus, Flash kernel, and su, finely tuned. It's fast, reliable, lots of custom options, and I get good batt life for my use (4.5 - 5.5 hrs sot).
My 2 XL is rooted, running Flash kernel, and gets good batt life for my use (4.5 hr sot +/- 30 mins) with no cust rom, and few custom options.
I enjoy the 2 XL way more, it is noticeably faster, and I've nearly forgotten my 6P which is a great device that doesn't need upgraded even running a 6 month old Cust Rom.
Could you live with the 6P and save $800? Sure.
But man could've just stayed on the earth looking up at the moon too... I'm really glad we went there!

Nexus 6P was absolutely horrendous with outdoor viewing. Even with brightness all the way up it was abysmal to read in sunlight.. Pixel 2 XL blows it away.
Nexus 6P as mentioned before was a throttling heat generator
Nexus 6P battery was garbage
Nexus 6P loud speaker was terrible
The oleophobic coating wore off quickly and the phone became a smudge magnet.
Nexus 6P on T-Mobile was annoying with modem randomly deciding it doesn't want to connect to the mobile network anymore due to band 12 ****ery and requiring a reboot to connect to the mobile network again.
Nexus 6P didn't age gracefully that's for sure.

What I'd really like to know is if the 6P with the "high brightness mod" found in kernels (thanks to Flar2) is brighter than the Pixel 2 XL stock max brightness, which will not be getting that mod anytime soon (if ever).
The high brightness mod on my 6P really, really cranks up the brightness and works super well when set to automatic.

Yep, my 6p with HBM on, is slightly brighten than my P2XL at full brightness. But it's not a drastic difference in my opinion.

Truly and deeply, batter camera, battery life, and battery longevity. The 2XL being a 10nm device puts the power and efficiency double that than the 6p on paper. Real world.... It's better and longer.
All of the other yada yada's:
- Better built
- Water resistant
- Better Dac
- Photo/Video storage
- smaller bezels
Yeah, can't think of anything else that matters you can't do without root.

Except for diminished battery life I had no real problem with my 6P, but it was good to replace it with the Pixel 2 XL. Booting up the 6P compared to the speed of the 2XL makes me smile on the occasions I do shut down.

Yeah, mine developed battery issues very quickly before it was replaced.
I never had any problems with the 6P band 12 on T-Mobile. I was hoping to see greater throughput on the 2XL but it's generally about the same. There are times when the 2XL outshines the 6P, but I can't say it's consistent.

It's pretty easy, I'm not super good with this stuff, but the instructions are good to follow. There's a Guide and a Index thread by heisenberg that has everything you will need. The 6P is a fun phone to mod. You should do it

Just a warning, if you decide to increase the vibration strength, try not to put it past 75-80% you could damage the vibration motor if you go higher.

Always on Ambient Display - battery/burn in?

Hello guys, some questions
Does always on drain so much battery during the day? We talk about how much percentage/day?
Also, does it increases the risk of burn in the display by letting it be active? Thank you so much

I just ordered my 4th replacement phone due to burn in issues.
Battery is great on all of them
Burn in is less with the Nov update but was still noticable after about 7 days

They only time I'd worry want it is when charging overnight but just in case I've enabled the screensaver option to turn on when charging. Now the clock will move around when it's charging.

I have enabled screensaver to turn on when charging but it doesn't seem to be working. Still looks like the regular Always on Display.
I don't think in all my years with Android have I ever seen screensaver working.

Make sure you not only enable it but select when it comes on. Default is "when docked". You need to change it to "when charging"

i know im way late but you also cant have the "screen will not sleep when charging" option set in the developer options
i had to turn this off to get the moving screen saver clock to pop up

I don't really use always on display but it does require the screen to constantly be using power so yes, it would take more battery.
Yes, it does increase the risk of burn in. The clock does move around slightly but not enough to prevent some pixel from staying on constantly.

Wow 4 replacements due to burn in and only after 7 days? Is it the clock of the always on display that is burning in? Pretty crazy if it is. I've had my Pixel 2 XL for almost 4 months and not even the slightest trace of burn in. I do see some image retention once in a while but it's usually gone after 2-3 seconds and never lasts more than 10 seconds.

I am having an old panel (sep manufacturing date) that should be prone to burn-in. No signs of burn in until now! *knocks on wood*

It's not always on. If you cover the proximity sensor it turns off the always on display. So if in your pocket or face down (which I do to stop watching the time go slow) it will not burn in.
Also Google move the display so it's not constantly displaying is the exact same position all them time, see https://9to5google.com/2017/10/17/google-pixel-2-oled-burn-in-protection/

Yeah it's not as dramatic a shifting as Samsung does it but it does the job. Have had my phone since the month it was released but no AOD display burn in. The bottom though, does have a little but I just recently switched to Fluid Navigation so maybe it'll alleviate some of it

I've been using AOD since I got my P2XL 16 months ago. I have no screen burn in from it. It's safe to use.
