Tab S dead? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any devs working on ROMs, etc for this device anymore? It seems dead in the water...

Seems to not be as popular as other devices, unfortuantely, which is a pity, as the Tab S 10.5 is awesome! Just bought mine 2 months ago, and I love it.
Being that most of the ROMs for the Tab S seem to be dead in the water, made by people who openly admit they really don't know what they're doing, or both, I've turned to other solutions for customization. Some of these may improve your experience:
Install a custom launcher
Root the device
Install Xposed Framework, and then the following modules:
Wanam Exposed (lets you customize tons of things at the system level)
XPrivacy
Custom Share
MinMinGuard (no more ads)

Well the original galaxy s1 phone still has a showing on xda, it`s been getting kitkat rammed down it throat, pity it`s poor singe core cpu and 512mb of ram, So there should be still life in the Tab S1 Yet, especially since the S2 is 4:3 that must have put a lot of penitential buyers off.
I have had my 10.5" T800 for 10+ month`s and i still love it to bits.
John.

Thanks for the responses.

[Q] Is this a worthy upgrade?

Hey everyone,
After three years using the legendary Xperia X10, it's finally given out on me and died. Is this a good upgrade over that? Where I live, it is possible to get the LG G2 and the HTC One M7 for around the same price, but I have my reservations about buying them because they're old models.
Should I get this phone, or go for something else?

N3 Neo is definitely a big upgrade over Xperia X10 in all respects!
Now coming to ur point regarding the other two phones u mentioned.. I think among the 3 u should choose between N3 Neo & G2, now it depends on ur preferences which phone u do choose, both phones have their own advantages-
G2 over Neo:
- 1080p screen
- More powerful GPU if ure a hardcore gamer
- Handy size
- IPS display
- Great dev support
Neo over G2:
- Bigger screen if u like the extra real estate
- Note features & S-Pen
- No overheating issues
- Samsung has much better service support
- Better battery life
- Super Amoled screen
- Expandable storage & removable battery
Ure from Trivandrum so I don't think both the phones have nearly the same cost.. in fact G2 is much costlier!
Flipkart prices - 27.5K for Note 3 Neo & G2 (32gb) for 36K
buy wisely!
I never like phone with sealed battery (Though I am having iPhone, which was a wish to have always).

Thanks man. Actually, the prices of both phones are nearly the same, if you know dealers. The main problem with the Note 3 Neo seems to be the lack of developer support. Coming from the X10 (which had a HUGE developer base), the support on this forum seems to be lacking.
Is there a 4.4 update for the Neo?

Yeah.. local dealers may give u better deals.
If ure a flashaholic then this phone is not for u (atleast for now).
I used to be a flashaholic having the S2 which still has excellent dev support, but since I've bought this phone, my desire to root & modify have vanished.. the phone has exceptional battery life, smooth performance & a lot of neat features which I love. I don't plan to use aosp & cm roms cos this phone is a note & the S-Pen defines it!
Nowadays we get most of the new cool features through Xposed so no point about stock based custom roms.. but yeah it's about personal preference!
The KitKat update is due and we have still not recd it (u know sammy is slow with updates).. we'll get it shortly I guess..

Kitkat update is only avaialbe for korean variant of Note 3 neo at the moment . Rest should be updated I think .
If dev support is what you're looking for , DO NOT buy an exynos phone and esp. this one as it's not quite popular like the rest

What do you mean by this Xposed? What is it exactly? And as for flashing and developer support, I'm not too keen on those. The only reason I turned to the forums was because my old X10 had started to lag. I suppose the only reason I'll need to root this phone would be to remove some of the trashy apps made by Samsung that nobody uses, like S Voice and the like.

Yes I know, the amount of bloat Samsung dumps into the phone is painful, but u can disable most of it & completely remove it after rooting so that's the good part.
okay, now about Xposed, search for "Xposed framework" on google & visit addictivetips site which explains everything about Xposed. It's one of the greatest android root apps.

you get all the S-Pen features of the bigger brother in the neo, the features that have been stripped down are display (720p), RAM (2gb), processor (well, can't really call it less powerful), some other small things are display profiles, air gestures, camera but nothing as such which is a deal breaker. If u want the full Note 3 software suite experience at a much cheaper price, this phone is the one for u!

Yeah, I know the specs of the model . I wouldn't call the 720p display a letdown. Let's face it, in India, using a 1080p screen is quite hard, especially if you're unemployed and a student. And with this year's iteration of the Note, it'll be even more difficult to use it. Who the hell watches 2K videos anyway? Not to mention, unless the GPU in the next Note is the Adreno 420, it'll be underpowered like the G3. Seriously, manufacturers have gone completely retarded this year.

That's so true.. TBH I find the display really good (better than S4 in terms of colour reproduction), my previous daily driver was the GS2 which has a 217 ppi screen, so 267 ppi is a major jump!
I don't believe in the crazy spec jump we have with every iteration. I found FHD itself to be a stretch, but 2K is as of now useless.
I'm really happy with my phone, always had a dream to own a Note series device (they were always out of budget, I too am a student).. just a rare stutter is visible but the features completely outweighs that rare moment.

Even worse is the fact that the manufacturers apparently think that the S400 with cortex A7 cores is somehow better than the dual core Krait or the dual core A15 configuration. It's a big step back in terms of raw processing power. That's the only reason why I thought of this device. All the others have stupid S400 cores, including the HTC One mini 2 and the Galaxy S5 Mini (which are likely to priced above this one).
As for the display, my older phone was the X10, which had around 240ppi. I'm sure the 720p display will be a big boost

The hexa core configuration in this phone is excellent, no overheating (which is common with other exynos phones) and consistent performance. Seriously, I still don't know why the manufacturers don't use Cortex A15 dual cores, they are quite powerful. The minis nowadays are plain stupid, half the customers don't even know how they are being fooled, they just see the "Quad core" monicker and blindly buy much costlier phones. Just look at that phone G Pro lite, I mean seriously, 25K for that thing? ?
720p is fine, text too is quite sharp.

[Q] Galaxy Tab S or S2 ?

Hi Guys,
My 2012 Nexus 10 is showing its age and I am desperate for a new tablet. I waited so long for Galaxy Tab S2, but I am kinda disappointed with its spec. old 5433 SoC and 4:3 screen with downgraded ppi and resolution ! so I am thinking about Galaxy Tab S, what do you think about it after lollipop update ? I heard many users complained about its lags and underpowered SoC, would you recommend it ? also how is the custom ROM community for it ? I can see there are a couple custom ROMs but are there stable enough to for daily usage ? I remember exynos had very limited developer support, so there was not many great ROMs for exynos devices out there, what do you think ? Galaxy Tab S or S2 ?
The S1 is a masterpiece the S2 is a frankenstein monster, 4:3 spit, virtually mono sound spit, so looks plain jane spit, no camera flash spit, no if-red spit, portrait design spit, I though it was an Galaxy Tab A by the photo`s it looks so cheap.
Exynos version has loads of rom`s, snapdragon version hardly any, If you want stability stick to kitkat, if your fine with flashing have fun with different roms.
John
But what about the lags and stutters on kitkat ? I heard lollipop fixed that. is it true ?
I have had no lag or stutter on my 10.5" kitkat , I had it running continuously for 160 days, I never shut it down or restarted it, I only did a restart to re-calibrate my battery but i had no problems with the battery, it was just maintenance.
But i am not a gamer, I mostly watch video`s and browse the internet for at least an hour every day, but white on an oled display eats the battery, if you do a lot of browsing use night mode or get an lcd tablet.
John.

hmm. hard question. I personally would not get either right now. The s2 looks like a step backwards in the key areas, the darn screen.
the s has the lovely screen, but unless you can get a decent deal, its too long in the tooth to spend out a lot for.
its so irritating as there are no tabs which tick all the boxes. the experia z3 is good, but the res is lower, but everything else is up to speed.
dont get me wrong, I really do like my tablet, but who knows what is coming out in the next few months, or will be announced. I hope finally there is something which is progress in all areas.
The Tab S2 has a lower resolution screen than the Tab S (both resolution AND PPI), a significantly smaller battery and a marginally upgraded processor.
I'd wait for the true successor to the Tab S - which will likely a more upmarket SAMOLED tablet, priced higher than the Tab S with a full metal body (Like the Galaxy Tab A) and more of a competitor for the iPad.
I prefer plastic to metal, metal is cold and when bent or dented it does not spring back like plastic also it blocks radio waves so you have to have non metal sections to let the waves in and out, Samsung are masters of durable plastic, you can bend the battery cover of their phones almost in two and it will spring back without any damage try that with metal.
John
So I bought my Tab S around a month ago and I have to say I'm in love with it! After seeing the specs of the Tab S 2 I knew straight away the device for me.
The tab s in my opinion tick pretty much every box the only thing I wish was better is the GPU for gaming (not that it plays games badly - they play well enough) but I can be quite picky and if I'm not getting the max FPS from a game I feel upset! Everything else on the tablet is perfect and I'm the kind of chap that sells his devices every couple of months for the latest better version but this is the first device I've come across that I've not even looked at replacing, well worth the £300 I spent for it. The xperia z4 tablet is now out and it's specs are majorly impressive but it's thick bezels I think make it an ugly design, I love the thin sides of the Tab S, another tablet I've been looking at is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 but again after seeing it in the shop I think it's quite ugly and put a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse and hancom fine with my tab s and it's replaced my laptop, which I'm selling on eBay at the moment as it hasn't been used since I bought my tablet.
I'm a network manager at a school and have used my Tab S for a hell of a lot including connecting to multiple servers and writing 30 page policies. It's a great little device.
I upgraded to Lollipop but I'm using IronRom instead of stock and I have to say it's very stable and very fast. No lag. On antutu I got around the 4100 mark with all my GPU and CPU over locked it's just as powerful as an S5 phone. I'd recommend it to anyone and already multiple family members and the girlfriend have ordered one after seeing mine.
Sorry this was long but I hope it helped
Comes down to a few questions:
Do you value performance. The Exnos 5420 is a 2 year old processor. The 5433/7410 is a 1 year old processor (though it is a 20nn version of the 7420 in the S6)
Do you value battery life. The Tab S2 8.0 has a battery that is 20% smaller than the original tab. It may be that the 20nn processor and smaller newer screen are more efficient but I don't expect better battery life.
Do you value longevity/updates: The Tab S2 is a year newer so it will have its updates discontinued later than the Tab S.
Does display ratio matter to you: If you mostly read, the Tab S2 may be a dream come true. If you mostly watch videos, it's a disaster.
Do you value internal storage: Other than a best buy limited edition model, the Tab S has 16gb storage. The S2 has 32GB.
It seems like the Tab S2 is a Galaxy Note 4 (international) turned into a tablet. The Tab S was the Galaxy Note 3 (international) turned into a tablet.
This is a tough question for me. I re-bought the Tab S 8.4 for 190 (ridiculous deal best buy had a few months ago) after leaving it late last year to try other tablets (The Xperia Z3 Tablet and the Venue 7840). I also bought the Tab S 8.4 on day 1 last year (great deal, $350 for the tablet, Samsung cover, and 16gb sd card) to replace my Tab Pro 8.4 that I bought on day 1. I'm leaning towards getting it if the same deal is in play.
I have asked basic maths for help:
smaller side of t800 is 5.87 inch and of t810 is 5.82 inch...
So I do not see any advantage for browsing in new generation...

Unfortunately yes he is right here as the Tab S processor is a year older, though I find it very quick and non-laggy when using IronRom on lollipop. As stated above the one thing I'd change is GPU performance but remember you always have over clocking when you root!

Best thing about android is that you can flash a custom ROM so updates never bother me as I can always flash a latest build of Cyanogenmod if needs be.

I have 16GB internal storage on my Tab S including a 128GB memory card. Everything including apps is stored on my memory card thanks to the app "foldermount" you must be rooted though, I don't think the Tab S 2 has expandable storage but I could be wrong.
Good Point the S1 beats the S2 in both horizontal and vertical resolution, so the S2 is not really better for browsing, though you have to turn the S1 10.5" to portrait mode as it`s an landscape tablet while the S1 8.4" is an portrait style already.

Thank you all for your responses and opinions, I guess I would go for a Galaxy Tab S. but I will wait until S2 is released so I can get a good deal. I expect galaxy tab s gets a discount when s2 is released.
S1 - just bought my third for the household, was holding out for the S2 but so glad i did not wait for a iPad Air copy.
This morning I read that the S2 comes with Android 5.0.2 and started to laugh. Seriously 5.1.1 has been out for months including on a few Samsung devices. At the glacial pace that Samsung updates their tablet OS versions Android M will have been out for at least three months before the S2 gets v5.1.1, what a joke.
That on top of an older processor makes you wonder why they even bothered. I'm very happy to have bought my S 10.5 at almost $70 less retail, a few months ago, rather than this laughable new flagship tablet. Samsung's advantage of the best screen technology in the industry is getting sabotaged by very odd engineering decisions. It seems like the tablet division is run by their B team.

Frankly speaking, I would never buy an S2 over the Tab S. At the moment on the Tab S you can have Lollipop, Xposed, custom kernels with F2FS, and the tablet flies, literally.

Well, the advantage is that is almost the same viewing area but in a smaller and lighter package. Also, much more natural than the awkwardness that 16:10 is in portrait on such a large tablet as the tab S IMO. YMMV.

That video sure did nothing to change my mind that the S2 is a step backward. Especially the comparison of reading the magazine which showed nothing visually while the video playback did demonstrate the smaller picture and unused screen black bars. Is Samsung going to pronounce, to video watchers, that the black bars on video playback is actually a way to extend your battery life? Which maybe needed as the thinner design and aspect ratio has reduced overall battery size. It is going to be tough to polish a turd and sell it at a flag ship price.
After reading the S2 details I'm still amazed that the OS is v5.0.2 and it does not have the same processor that the S6 phone uses. What were they thinking?

8.4 Tab S or Sony Z3 Compact Tablet?

I have reading all sort of reviews on the Samsung and Sony.
It seems to summarise into the below, but would like some real world feedback. Particularly how they are behaving on the latest version of the firmware. (I am looking at the 4G/LTE version for both
Sony Z3 Compact Tab
. All the reviews I read showed this was faster
. Worse screen but still good
. Better sound
. Large bezel
. Great battery life
Samsung Tab S 8.4
. Slower due to bloatware *but have read the latest version of android may resolve this?*
. Bigger screen and fantastic quality
. Average sound
. Small bezel
. Weak battery life *resolved with latest android?*
I can get them for about the same money, give or take £10. So price isn't an issue.
What are your thoughts? Particularly in light of the latest software releases. I know both Sony/Samsung can release some rather patchy updates!
To be honest, if I were you I wouldn't choose any of the 2... But if you really have to pick one of them I'd go for Sony.
The only thing that Samsung as better is the screen, for the rest the Sony will do better.
I have a Tab S 10.5 and I couldn't be more disappointed with it. Since last upgrade to lollipop it's almost unusable... Memory leaks all over the place, launcher redraws and crashes, apps can't stay in memory, it's total crap.
I have also a Xperia Z1 as daily driver, and I feel that support is better from Sony than Samsung, with more updates as well. Samsung tottaly forgot the Tab S line and now we are stuck with 5.0.2 version.
As bloatware concerns, Samsung has more, and the native apps like video, music, photos, etc., are better in Sony.
If you want a tablet buy a Nexus 9, at least it has direct support from Google and doesn't come with all that bloatware.
Just my opinion

Thanks for the honest opinion, I had discounted the Nexus 9 due to seemingly poor screen quality/build quality and no SD card...although maybe have to reconsider.
I am pretty well versed in Samsung/Sony given I currently have Tab 3 8.0 and Z3 Compact (Phone!). So know their usual tricks/quirks.
I've got a Tab S 8.4 and I'm really satisfied with it: great display, good battery life (80% after
90 minutes screen on), very good performance (compared to my S4), very stable (can't remember the last time I had to restart it). I'm running unrooted stock Lollipop, but with Nova launcher.

I really wish to say the same thing, but with mine (it's 10.5 version) my battery is worse and Nova Launcher is always crashing in Lollipop (it's stock and already made a factory reset).
If I charge it to 100% it last me 3 days in standby (no use at all) in Lollipop, and I lose about 35% in 90min. I don't no if it's different between versions but mine is killing me.
The screen of nexus 9 it's not so bad, I've seen one and it looks nice (althouth the Tab S is better).
The best thing to me, is the simplicity of the vanilla Android and the lack of bloatware (Sony doens't have much), and the fact that will be upgradable to marshmallow. With the Samsung you will stay on 5.0.2 (there's no prevision for 5.1.1) and with Sony I think that you already have 5.1.1, and have more chaces of an upgrade to marshmallow.

These types of threads are not allowed and it will get deleted. However before it does, I concur with none of what you claim.
I have absolutely no issues with battery life, no issues with lag with how I use it. Memory leaks...no issues here, that's just hearsay for lollipop in general and it doesn't affect the tab s.
You use a 3rd party launcher yet blame the tablet? Even though TouchWiz isn't the best I have no such issues with the launcher.
You can go anywhere on the net and find all sorts of such negative comments regarding the Sony too.
Its pointless posting in the device forum concerned for which one is preferable. Its always going to be biased.
But i will just say how it is and it's purely my experience and my opinion.

I don't know anything about Sony, but Samsung stock s/w is atrocious. My SM-T700 is super sweet after rooting and installing AICP ROM. As for Samsung bloatware, before I rooted I used an app disabler from Play and had 104 apps disabled just to get it to work right.

I only gave my opinion and shared my experience. Everything I said was from my point of view since the user asked for opinions.
As I said earlier I have that problem in my tablet, like many other have. That doens't mean that other people have them as v6matt replied...
I don't blame the tablet because of Nova Launcher, but because of the memory management that is always closing my apps.Nova Launcher is just an app that suffers from it.
I had the same problems with my Sony Z1 with 5.0.2 (as you said it's a version problem). The only thing that I focused was the support and commitment of those brands with their customers as well as the capacity of upgrading their tablets.
No more to say...
I've had both of these tablets over the last year. The sony had a really good screen for a non-amoled, it's thin/ lightness also was very good (it is as light as the Tab S2 and still slightly thinner than the Tab S 8.4.
I feel like there is a usage case for each. If you want to read books on the beach or in the bathtub, the Sony is the only option as its waterproofing adds value. If you want the largest and highest quality screen humanly possible in a one-handed tablet (and you don't like on-screen buttons), the Samsung is for you.
That screen/body ratio can be a big deal. The Samsung has a 76.6% ratio and has hardware nav buttons, leaving extra space on the screen. The Sony has a 70.3% ratio with no hardware buttons.
The Sony's back plastic is grippier (Oh how I wish they would give plastic backs to their phones). It was the first of the Xperias to have a capless USB port. Both of the official covers are really good.
Sony is quicker in updates. They unified their hardware/software updates, which means the Z3 Tablet Compact got 5.0 and 5.1 before the Tab S 8.4. Sony has the snapdragon 801, which is better on games. There is little in the way of custom roms as the tablet never sold to the extent as the Tab S.
I actually have an opportunity to use both for a week...
My thoughts so far
Sony
- Speed - Very good - Similar to Samsung - Antutu 44833
- Screen - Impressive especially with the white balance tweaks, however you can see that colours don't pop in quite the same way as the Samsung. Quality is compromised slightly when viewing at an angle.
Sound - Better than the Samsung
Battery - Very good - similar to the Samsung
Samsung
Speed - Much better than I was expecting - Sometimes it actually feels quicker than the Sony, however lower Antutu of 39388
Screen - Vibrant colours and black, but the whites are quite yellow. Extra 0.4 inch is welcomed. Quality is not compromised when viewing at an angle.
Sound - Perfectly good
Battery - Very good - similar to the Sony
Overall, I can see why people struggle deciding between the two. I still haven't made my mind up yet.
Take the sony man samsung will abandon this tab after a while

Have they stated 5.0.x is the last release?
I was initially going towards the Sony, but the screen and oddly the real life performance of the Samsung are impressing.
Although I did find that on some games the colours are almost oversaturated to the point of looking burnt.(Samsung), but films are certainly better on the Samsung.
I managed to narrow the gap by adjusting the white balance which has taken some of the coolness out of the Sony screen, but the words 'deeper colours' are certainly true of the samsung.
It sounds like the Sony is likely to be better supported on the flip side, and it does feel slightly more premium.
Sounds like either product woudnt be the end of the world though.
Decision made - Going for the Sony.
Ultimately the Samsung is very good indeed but two elements just frustrated me:-
The whites are a shade of yellow (like most Amoled screens including my old S2 Phone) and it simply looks odd when viewing faces, white images.
I have never had a device crash as much, this is a fresh tablet with the latest software. Last night it crashed twice whilst screen mirroring and has did it one before when playing with settings (Accessibility - Colours).
Such a shame, as otherwise a lovely thing.
good luck with the sony...never again...i had tablet z2...problems with touch, problems with display (full of different colourful pixels) on black backgrounds, problems with tablet dead suddenly and couldnt wake it up but started working the 2nd day..3 times in repair center in 3 months....also my brother is having screen problems on his z3 phone...i like the design of the phone and tablet but they will have to step up with the quality control but since then...no thank you...i am far more happy with the tab s 10.5...

still relevant today for a low to mid range phone

I'm looking to change my iphone 5c. I know the performance of the two phones is almost the same.
This would be my first Samsung. I'm a bit scared of switching because friends of mine had S4 (not mini) variants with major issues including replacement of mainboard).
The reason I am looking at this phone is that I want something with more freedom and future proofing ( removable battery, sdcard, nfc, IR ) and a bigger screen, while being around the $150-$200 price range
So:
Would anyone recommend buying it today?
Has anyone used this phone more than a year or two? I'm looking for a phone to last me at least 2-3 years, as I don't change them that often.
How is the rom availability and performance and stability of the available custom roms?
The s4 mini is a decent old phone. It is compact, it is powerfull enough to do most of the work we do on smartphones in 2016.
It has an excellent (A+) development community. You will surely love the little features like removable battery, sd card, ir blaster etc.
I have used them a lot. Battery life on this phone, from my experience is just above average. Although my phone now suffers some ghost drain.
The phone has official cyanogenmod 13 support which is phenomenal. Some high end phones still do not have that support.
In terms of stability as of now cm12.1 is the most stable and all roms based on cm12.1, like aicp, ressurection remix etc are very stable and daily driver
worthy. CM13 will be stable soon. The work devs put into this phone almost makes me cry, :crying: Samsung takes money and gives no updates, while
these awesome guys do it for free, with limited resources.
The performance of this phone is adequate for most 2016 needs as i said earlier. Recently i ran antutu while on cm13, I got a score of 33K. Which is on par
with most midrange chipsets these days that have 8-10 cores Not that benchmarks matter a lot, but real world usage is brilliant. I have very few lags or
memory issues with this phone. It holds up really good with moderate-slightly heavy usage. But ofcourse with really hardcore use, phone may stutter here and
there. But performance for a midrange phone from 2013,... this is great.
Samsung more or less maxed out the technology on the S4. There's very little the S5+ offer over the S4 and even regression in some categories. The S6 might have more cores and memory, but it handles tasks poorly and can't be modded. The S5 has useless bloat features and no real RAM or processor update over the S4. Most of the "innovation" now is cosmetic.
The S4 Mini might not have the best camera, but specs-wise it's comparable to the full power S3 LTE, with the S4 interface. With CyanogenMod's Lolipop/Marshmallow roms and the Brazilian Kitkat bootloader, there is no fear of being locked into a specific ROM, as you can flash from JellyBean through Marshmallow without problem.
It's an underrated phone. I don't agree with sansak that the development community is A+, because these forums are rather quiet for such a modable phone. The phone is thankfully still supported among other things.
Is it relevant? Very yes. Just because it's "old" does not mean "bad". Galaxy S quality plateaued after the S4.

I can't find a tablet that checks all the boxes, is S4 the closest?

1) headphone jack (has it)
2) at least 4G ram, modern processor, nice screen, 64 GB internal storage or more, 10" screen or more (has it)
3) waterproof/IP6x rating (doesn't have it)
4) Active XDA community (has it)
5) Is easy to root, unlock bootloader, flash custom roms, etc... (not totally clear, looks easier than my old Xperia Tabs).
Any feedback on #5 would be great, or if anyone wants to talk me out of getting one or getting a different one I'm listening. Would get the S5e if it were waterproof or had a headphone jack. Still annoyed that Sony apparently developed some new tablets and then shelved them at the last minute.

I have the Tab S4 64GB LTE + Wifi Version (I wanted the 256GB but it was never released in my country) I would say go for it. I'm extremely happy with the Tab S4 and anxiously waiting for the Pie update (rumoured to be out by April) It performs great and I use it in my office daily. I plug the tab to an USB-c dongle that's hooked up to a monitor and use Dex on it. It may not be perfect but it gets the job done for me. It performs well and barely lags. The only thing I hate about it is how most Android apps aren't really optimized for tablets. There is no fingerprint scanner which is fine for me since the Iris and face unlock are quite reliable. This only becomes annoying for me with my password manager. It doesn't support iris scanning to log in, so I end up using a pin code.
The only advantage I see with the Tab S5e is the cheaper price, fingerprint scanner, option for more RAM (unless you can get a Tab S4 from Korea) and smaller body frame.
Not really related but I have tried the Tab S3, and that one was slow. Watching YouTube videoes were annoying; videos would stutter and the Youtube App would freeze and then crash. I never had any of those experiences with the Tab S4 and it is a definite improvement over its predecessor. I've had mine for 7 months and still runs smooth as the day I got it. I also have substratum running on mine and it works well!
Based on your requirements the I think you'll prefer the Tab S4 for the headphone jack. The XDA community is great. I'm just not too familiar with the rooting/unlocking bootloader on this device though so I can't say anything about that.
I hope you find the tablet you are looking for. Cheers.
Rooting is quite easy on my tab S4 WiFi. All needed to be done was follow the instructions. Be noticed that rooting procedure does indeed trip knox.
It is lacking when it comes to development of custom ROM. There are only a few available roms and they're all based off official Samsung firmware. I would love to see something like lineageOS on this thing but having my fingers crossed for now. My guess for this is the high price of this tablet which made it not as widely available as others for more active developments. The s5e pricing looks quite promising and I think once released it will prove to be more popular than S4. If you're more into custom ROM then I would recommend leaning toward the s5e instead. That said, the S4 is still the top performing tablet as of now and I absolutely loving this damn thing.
This tablet isn't rated for water resistance. It might survive a splash or two but not submerge in water.
Face and iris unlock work generally quite well but it's not as fast as finger scanner. I often alternate between glasses and it sometimes confuse the tablet. Doesn't work well in the dark either.

Tab s5e will not support s pen as far as I'm aware. So not even in the same league as the s4
I just upgraded after patiently hoping for some sort of Dex equivalent for my Tab S3. Octa makes a big difference imo with snappier responses and I really love Dex so that i don't need necessarily need my bigger laptop when I travel.
I really wish Brydge made a keyboard for this device. So frustrating they only make it for the Pixel Slate (who in the world who would Chrome OS on x86)
Took the plunge today after 2 weeks of contemplation between the iPad Pro 11 and Tab S4. I don't know why it took me so long, given that I absolutely love it. I had my reservations having used the iPad Pro for the past 3 years. But the package (S-pen included, cellular model, expandable storage) for almost half the price of the latest iPad Pro, is just too good imo. Also, that display is absolutely stunning, I compared a 4k video on Tab s4 vs S10+ and preferred the tab Tab S4 screen (even though it could just be the size differential) . There are concerns chipset is old and ram is not enough, but for tablet I don't think that's an issue. I just hope it ages well, whether it'll still be as good in a year or two's time.
