All stock and locked but no recovery mode? - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an HTC One M9, all stock, locked, and untampered with but I cannot boot into Recovery. I can boot into Download mode, and the Bootloader but when I try to go from the Bootloader to the Recovery menu it gives me the red triangle exclamation point and then does nothing. I've talked to Verizon no service and they just read from the screen, hold the vol button blah blah blah. Talked to best guy's geek squad and they had no clue what a Bootloader or Recovery mode were, so I'm here where I know the community is all about phones. Anyway I've tried factory resetting from the menu and going looking for Recovery I've tried with SD and SIM removed, I've tried with both removed before after and during a FR. Same result. I'm thinking either someone had installed spyware on the device or this app called Google Device Policy are doing me from accessing it? I'm trying right now to find out of somehow I have a Corp over stock return cause everything I've come across on that device policy app says it's used by Corps and the government for tracking device usage. It doesn't appear in any list I've been able to find for native apps installed on HTC or more specifically the M9. Hopefully here I won't get asked why I want to boot into Recovery, hahaha.

Well it seems this one even stumps the pros. At the minimum I thought someone would have heard of that Google Device Policy app and commented. Well tomorrow I'm contacting my insurance co and seeing if this would qualify as a defect and try to have it replaced. I mean I can't get locked out of my phone cause I'd have no way to reset it in order to get back into it. One last thing, I was able to select to disable that policy app but disabled or not I still have no recovery menu. And of course it's not one that can be uninstalled.
I've also considered that my soon to be ex may have placed a spy app on the device. From what I've read they can prevent the device being FR, I'm assuming to prevent themselves from being uninstalled. Some require root which my device says that it has not been, and she is not savvy enough on her own to accomplish. I can FR from the menu but I'm not sure this doesn't stimulate a FR or something crazy like that... Which again I think would require root... And around we go again. Hey crazy ex's while going thru divorce can make you a little noidded, which maybe I am but it still doesn't trump the fact that I have no recovery and there's this strange app on the phone I can see and maybe something I can't???

Well HTC got me to Recovery. Still not happy that it's not a typical route.
So everything as normal until I get to the red triangle. Once there, hold the power button and tap the up vol button and I have all of my Recovery mode options.

Thanks man, you are a lifesaver. I just updated my HTC One M8 to marshmallow and couldnt find the right combination to enter recovery. I tried everything and nothing worked until THIS!

i cannot believe how ridiculously difficult HTC made it do get into stock recovery.
I had SAME problem for hours!! trying to load the stupid stock recovery. i tried Labtofers instructions pressing all 3 buttons after selecting "recovery" in menu. then i tried Android revolution rom said press vol up then power. didn't work. (but they did say try other combinations). then tried vold down and power. it just got back to bootloader and download mode. . then I read this thread, and after hold power THEN CLICK VOL UP! did it. (tks guys). this instruction should be in ALL the recovery OP threads. so stupid HTC os sometimes. (... and I still can't xxxx install OTA update from phone, even though my new replacement phone is completely stock!)
OT (rant- My last M9 was s-off and rooted. i was hoping that i could update this new replacement phone to Marshmallow and stay stock for a while, but now its stuck on 2.9.xxx.xx firmware as the original system update 2.10.xxx.xx fails every time! and its a new phone! htc really need get their act together. This is my second M9, and my first M9 already had so many problems before also. rant over. sorry had to get that out. the how to get to stock recovery was just last straw today. peace)

Hi ,,I have unlocked s off m9 sprint with deleted os while trying to flash new rom ,,now stuck into bootloader ,,no recovery what shud I do now

Just a sidenote: It's explained in the FAQ of the ReadMe thread which is pinned at the top of the General and the Q&A section. So this thread is not the only place where the key combination gets mentioned.

[Q] DHD stuck in SAFE MODE

Further to my last thread about a possible bricked DHD, I've come to realise that my volume down key seems to be stuck. Now every time I boot I go into HBOOT and cant toggle between the options once I'm in there. So to boot up I have to use ADB but because the volume down is stuck in, this automatically boots in SAFE MODE. I can install fresh Roms, restore/backup etc in recovery (again via ADB), but ultimately, when I boot up, it goes into SAFE. This is highly annoying as I cant download or use any 3rd party apps. Is there any way to disable this? Even using ADB somehow? If any of you clever dudescan help, it'll be worth numerous cyber pints!! Thanks in hope, Greg

Hi, try this to get fastboot
You can hold back and power to get fastboot, from there you can hit power to get bootloader, vol up to cycle round to recovery, power to select.

Thanks, but I can get into fastboot no problem, due to my volume key being jammed down. Every time I power up I go into fastboot. The problem I have is booting from fastboot/recovery/off results in safe mode due to the key being stuck. What I need to be able to do is disable safe mode using command prompt somehow.

Ok, sorry misundestood post.Thats annoying. I have rooted many a phone and normally a reboot should take it out of safe mode. And removing battery for a few minutes does a soft reset which clears a number of items. I am not aware of an adb shell command to remove from SM sorry..
I do recall some time ago seeing a youtube video that showed how to fix the stuck key (from memory I think it may have originated from HTC).
If this does't work then may be time to seek harwdare repairer or replacement if under warranty :-(

Sorry for late response bit of a family emergency. Its hard to say, some say you should put it back others so don't worry. Personally I think rectifying a stuck button will not be due to which rom you have on your phone.

Just wondering have you heard back from HTC re phone fix, or have you got it replaced yet?
Hi,
I have the same problem as you just described (also a rooted dhd, with broken volume key, stuck in safe mode).
Did HTC fix it for you? Or has anybody a different solution, because I have dropped my phone a couple of times and are wondering if it still is within the warranty because of that.
Thanx

If you have stuck key then it will no doubt be a repair job. If you have dropped your phone then it is highly unlikely it will covered under STD phone warranty
So you could be stuck paying for the repair

recovery without power button

Hi, let me explain my problem:
I have a desire with power button broken.
last 6 months i use it normally wiht a rooted room (but s-on). When i want to turn on the device I pull off and on the battery twice.
Recently i installed an application and after a reboot the device keeps stuck in the initial splash animation.
So, i ONLY can access to HBoot (0.93 S-on). But i can't enter to recovery to erase userdata and format all and reboot a new room (as usual) because Hboot enter key is the ****ing power button XD.
I tryed to S-OFF in linux with alpharev 1.8 or revolutinary when showing splash but they start and suddenly stop because smthg was wrong.
So the only thing i can do is send basic HBoot commands.
any idea?
You might get more response posting in the correct forum.

You can download Quick Boot (Reboot) from market. Use it to Reboot, Recovery, Bootloader or Power Off.
Anyway, you're posting this in wrong section, should be in Q&A.

Mate, his device is not even reaching the bootanimation, I wonder what kind of market you suppose him to have to use it in splashscreen or bootloader?

Haha.. I got confuse with his statement " When i want to turn on the device I pull off and on the battery twice." So I thought he can boot the phone Wrong section wrong answer
Thanks anyway
Code:

Good development you've got going here.
Mate flash an original wwe stock rom with its own flash utility (just run the executable) but you will loose root after that use the alpharev utility once your phone has started.

I had this same problem a while ago. Tried many apps to work around power button (mine was stuck "pressed"). Got to the point where I couldn't do anything without getting into recovery. Used a spare phone until I ordered the flex cable assembly from Ebay.. $40 or so..
Despite many years of working with electronics, it was still quite nerve racking to swap the part out... you have to re-use your camera module and a couple plastic parts stuck to the original (on back of volume buttons i think).
Read instructions and watched videos online several times before starting, and again as I did the work, and size/fit was ever so slightly off... but everything works now and I am a relieved and happy camper
I see the development is active for 4 days now.

New SGS3 possible hard brick! PLEASE HELP

Heres one for you all. Just got my GS3. Rooted it..bla bla..bla. Was running on stock rom of course and decided to try out one of the cm10 nightlies. Did my back up..bla bla bla and new rom would not flash. tried another and got the same thing. I was reading around and came across someone asking another guy if he had unlocked his bootloader because the same thing was happening to him.. The guy provided the .apk to unlock bootloader so I figured Id try it. Unlocked fine. Went to Rom Manager and booted into recovery.
Thats the last time my phone has been on. I cant get to anything. I can plug it into computer and hold power, vol, home buttons down for download mode and recovery but nothing. The computer will beep like its acknowledging it but still doesn't do anything. PLEASE HELP. This is my first Samsung and Ive always been able to get to recovery or bootloader to fastboot but this has me completely shut out. Im desperate. Thanks.
EDIT: remember, I never got to flash a new rom. All I did was use that unlocker.apk(not sure of the name) to unlock then booted into recovery from rom manager. Using that unlocker i believe is what did it. Like I said, im new to samsung, besides rooting some s2's for people at work and never had to unlock bootloader on their S2's
Unlocker.apk? Maybe it's a good thing I don't know what that is? But I would guess that may be part of your issue .
How did you get root?
Did you use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28019751 ???

Unlocker.Apk? Never heard of that and the at&t gs3 doesn't even have a locked bootloader. What user gave you that? If you can get into download mode.. (power off phone ..hold volume down + power button + home button) then flash back to stock.
I see that you CAN get into recovery? Since you made a backup ...why not just use it?

Assuming you're running the AT&T version, your bootloader was never locked. So, running an app to unlock your bootloader (which would be for a different phone), seems like a sure-fire ticket to brick town.
Seeing as how you can't boot into recovery or download mode at the moment, I would imagine your only recourse would be to try a USB jig to get into download mode to try to flash back to stock. Else, if the jig doesn't get you into download mode you'll either have to seek out JTAG service, try to get a replacement via warranty (make up some story), or enjoy your new paperweight and buy a new phone.
Good luck.

I too have never heard of this apk. It sounds malicious. He should return to stock. One time after rebooting my phone the Rom would never boot; the screen was black. I even tried restoring a backup but that yielded the same results. Get into Odin and flash a stock package from the dev thread.

Have you tried...
There really aren't enough details in your initial post to properly speculate on what is happening or happened with your phone, but...
I found that the easiest way to enter Recovery and Download mode is when the phone is not connected via USB.
Have you tried entering Download mode while the phone is not plugged in via USB?
Unlocker.apk meant for the Verizon s3?
Yeah..
Congratulations on your shiny new paperweight!
JTag is your only hope.
Goodluck!

[Q] HTC One stuck in boot screen. Help!?

Hey guys, I have a stock Verizon HTC One. Bootloader is locked and nothing is or has ever been rooter on this device. Recently, upon starting up my phone, the white 3-android boot screen came up. I can navigate through the options with the power up key, but the power down key for some reason does not work. Not only that, but the power button does NOT work to select ANY of the options, so therefore I can not boot the phone into recovery or even select factory reset from the menu. The strange thing is, is that I can hold the power key + the volume up key to boot up into Safe Mode, so I know the power button isn't broken. Once in Safe Mode, I have done a complete wipe of the device, but to no avail. The phone just boots right back up into the boot menu and I'm back at square one. I have no idea how to proceed from here, as my phone is out of warranty. If I could get some step by step instructions on how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated.
Note: image is from Google images, but that is what I'm currently seeing.
Thanks!
Flash the matching ruu from your computer, if it is a software issue, that should fix it. If you are s-on and on the 4.4.3 stock rom, there is an executable file farther down the page in this section of the forum. Just make sure your fastboot driver is up to date before flashing.

You don't have a vzw phone so you are in the wrong section. Separately, since you have an international m7, you can go to HTC dev and unlock that phone. Then flash a custom recovery and flash the Rom of your choosing.
Edit...just noticed you are already unlocked so you can simply flash twrp and flash a new Rom.
He said the pic was not of his phone, but that was closest pic he could find on Google.......so I assume he has the Verizon model. Maybe he doesn't.....idk!

Your in the stock recovery pal. Hold down the power and volume keys and you will eventually get some options on the screen. Once they come up use the volume buttons to scroll and power to select. Btw, i suspect you have a htc wildfire S not the htc wildfire. So this would be the wrong forum for you if your phone does not have a trackpad at the bottom of the screen (looks like a circle with a dot in it) then you have the S model.

Thanks for Replying back Its not letting me to run recovery and on the top of it if the phone boots up it take almost 20 minutes to get to the home screen and it hang sup their itself you can't even do anything on it and i am trying to unlock the boot loader to run recovery and install custom rom on it but nothing working out. I do have a trackpad on this mobile and i checked over the internet also and its Model number is A3333. Okay, pull the battery out. Then put it back in after 5 seconds. Hold down volume down, then power and keep both pressed down until a wite screen with some writing comes up. There it should say hboot, a version number and s-on or s-off. What does yours say?

Ah ha! Fantastic whoever else had this phone before you has done most of the hard work and security unlocked the bootloader already. http://dl-1.va.us.xda-developers.c...zip?key=kzoSRLwAaSgJsyXiuKJS4A&ts=1431506306 download this and place it onto your sdcard. Reboot into hboot and your hboot should request you to update the recovery. Select yes with volume up. After this you should reboot back into hboot without the sdcard in. Then select recovery from hboot and boot into it.
Once your in recovery you could either:
1. Wipe the data, cache and dalvik cache and then reboot the phone. This will reset the phone and hopefully fix and voot related issues.
2. Wipe the phone entirely and install a new rom. Cyanogenmod 7 is a good lightweight rom. Please look at the development section for all the roms available.
Just one question though, that screen damage looks like bad. Do you know what happened?

As I have said I recommend Cyanogenmod 7. Read the thread here Its a custom version but its more recent.
Now your screen, I suspect that those marks are from heat damage. Most likely from whoever else had the phone overclocking it. This could be a telltale sign of hardware damage through excessive use and it may never boot properly. I thought I should mention that.
Well i thats case would like to ask one more thing we will be able to fix it or not or its not worth it.

Depends, this phone is an old model as far as mobile phones are concerned. the cost of a motherboard and new lcd + digitizer could be the same cost as the phone in a used condition.
I work it out as £23.13 as the cheapest you could get the parts but then you would need to do a full tear down of the device in order to replace most of it. I mean basically your only keeping the frame, trackball, camera and some rubber bits.
Cheapest I can find to buy it in the uk is £25 ( with you needing to sim unlock it).
But I would add that you might as well try get cm7 on the device. The only thing it will cost you is time and you never know, the phone might be usable with CM7 on it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
OK bro let me first give a try with the cm7 rom and see if its work and hoping for the best

I tried to install stock rom that i have downloaded from HTC Website and that is not getting installed lets hope CM7 will work i can see the ultrabeam revolutionary Logo on the screen right now its still thinking up
