Did Samsung just make my tablet unrecoverable from theft? - Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2, 10.1, 8.4 Q&A, Help & Trouble

So I noticed the new guest mode icon on my lockscreen so I loaded up the guest and found a few strange things.
1) cerberus will not locate, alarm, ect when the device is in guest mode UNLESS it is installed as a system app. so unless you are rooted in lollipop you can't install it as a system app and once in guest mode it is lost to you. no locating, no erasing, nothing.
2) android device manager also will not locate the tablet when in guest mode. apparently you aren't logged into your account so it can't find it, ring it, erase it either.
3) guest mode cannot be removed, or disabled unless you are rooted
4) guest account seems totally unrestricted. if you want a restricted account you can make one BUT guest account remains available, meaning if you want to deny your kid internet access or whatever, all they have to do is choose the guest account and your restrictions are void.
can anyone confirm or deny any of my observations?

how to delete guest user

hi
how can i delete or disable guest user?
i set a pass for this user but when i switch user. in lock screen device ask: do you want to reset user profile and when i push yes button than password of this user is now gone.
whit this situation anybody can access to my data.
i have
p601 5.1.1 rooted
I don't think you'd want to completely delete the guest user. I had 'disabled' the guest user I thought and the guest user was invaluable to me, just today. I'm running a rooted SM-P607T and I had an issue were my lock screen pin was no longer recognized and I was locked out of the device. I was able to log onto the guest user account and with the help of various tools was able to repair the lock screen pin were I could again use the device with my account...and not have to flash everything on the device.
The Guest account was a life saver and if it used by a normal user has no rights to do any damage what-so-ever.

Fingerprint scanner vanished - Alternate password forgotten

Guys,
I done goofed.
Allowed the young one to play with the tablet, lo and behold, the fingerprint scanner was "gone" and the tablet was requesting the alternate password, which I'm ashamed to say I have no Idea what it is.
I've tried to access the tablet with Android Device Manager, which gives me 3 options, RING - BLOCK - ERASE
After researching, I read that clicking on block and setting up a password there would work, but it doesn't. It just gives me a message saying that "Since google has verified that a screen lock is already set, the password that you entered won’t be needed"
There's no samsung account set.
While I know I could do a factory reset, It would be sad to lose some of the photos and files on the device.
Crazy ideas to help this fool here?
cheers,
Dan
factory reset wont delete your photos and files. it just delete system related data/install apps. unless you format your internal drive.
Hmm I thought that could be the case, but the only way I can do as reset now is going into that special mode by pressing power, home, volume buttons when the tablet is off right?
Won't the option I find there more drastic that a regular factory reset?
I haven't tried yet because I was hopeful for another solution :/
No other option available, would be terrible if there was (security bug!) Just do a factory reset in recovery mode, never got my personal files deleted that way, even Bluetooth downloads and old app folders stayed there

Smartlock for passwords on the Pixel C

I'd like to enable Google Smartlock for passwords on my Google Pixel C, but when I was running Android N, under Settings/Security it shows my device as encrypted with no option to turn it off. So, I reloaded MM, N still has a lot of bugs I don't feel like messing with on an everyday tablet, but even under MM my device is encrypted with no option to disable it. Smartlock for passwords will not run on an encrypted device, but Google has decided to make encryption part of the OS. Is the only way around this is to unlock the bootloader and flash another ROM?

I never encrypt my devices so I couldn't speak about smart lock only working on encrypted devices. I know Marshmallow and up it's required for OEMs to encrypt (85% sure on that - I think it was supposed to start with Lollipop but OEMs weren't required to do so). Not that I don't believe you though, but that just seems weird for Google to "force" encryption but then allow another of their features, Smart Lock, to only work with unencrypted devices?
To answer your question - if you're running stock MM or N on a Google device, by default your data will be encrypted. The only way to decrypt would be to unlock the bootloader, format the data partition and flash a kernel that doesn't force encryption. You don't have to use another ROM per se, you just need a kernel that will keep you decrypted on your first boot.
I've no issue with smartlock on Pixel C, stock N5 and unencryted N9. I've only use trusted location - without GPS I wonder if you are having a problem with your location. Have you got "location" correctly set?
Ok, on your Pixel C, go into settings/Google, then scroll all the way to the bottom where it says Smartlock for Passwords, press it, and tell me what it says. When I do, it says, "This account uses custom passphrase encryption, which is unsupported at this time."
However, if I go to settings/security, I can enable Smart Lock, but just underneath where it says Smart Lock, it says:
Encryption
Encrypt Tablet
Encrypted
I never chose to encrypt anything, but, I guess Google uses encryption by default. Smart Lock can still be used, but Smartlock for Passwords can not.

Sorry misunderstood. I think the answer is that using your own passphrase disables Smartlock on Android see: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/1181035?p=settings_encryption&rd=1
"Some Google features will not be available after you set a sync passphrase
Google Now won’t show suggestions based on sites you browse in Chrome.
You won't be able to view your saved passwords on https://passwords.google.com or use Smart Lock for Passwords on Android.
Your history won't sync across devices. Web sites or URLs that you type in the address bar in Chrome will still sync."
Setting for Google/custom passphrase in chrome browser at chrome://settings/syncSetup
The strange thing is I don't use a custom passphrase, all of my information does sync between all of my devices, and I get Google Now cards based off my search history. However, last night, when I logged into an app, Smartlock for Passwords popped up and asked me if I wanted to save this password, so I guess it's working now. It still shows my tablet as encrypted, so I imagine it's just a bug.

G3 GUEST MODE ON Marshmallow

It happened AFTER the update to MM my guest mode does not work, it gives me no options to set up guest mode when i click guest mode it switches to guest mode directly. (previously it allowed me to setup completely with apps and all that) but now nothing no questions asked and if i switch more between guest and owner account or add a user my play store starts giving FC
than i am forced to do a factory reset.
Please if anyone can help me to fix it or is there a way to disable it. I will be very appreciative.
Thanks
-|- I am on stock Rom MM LG g3 D855,
-|- No mods except the root.
You may have to reflash, it's working fine on mine. Are you trying to log in to your google account which is also associated with your other user account? Perhaps that could be causing the issue. When I swap to guest it also does not have a setup option, it merely switches straight to the other user. I also remember once upon a time I had problems with the guest account when I had disabled apps on my main user account. Check if you have disabled some things. Particularly for me it was disabling the clock and home launcher apps which caused force reboots when trying to swap to the guest profile.
:good: but what do you exactly mean when you say "You may have to reflash" Am i to reflash the complete KDZ or Flash GAPPs please elaborate, because the play store keeps giving FC's in the guest mode. I have done a complete KDZ install twice. Yes there was setup wizard disabled in the System apps which i enabled but still it's the same.
Can you confirm if you see playstore in guest mode in your device? My understanding of G3 Guest Mode implementation in MM says that it should not show up in guest mode like I see other options restricted, like setting and all that but the play store error is annoying.

FRP FIX all MM devices

OK password forgotten you still can use the device, but you'll need a smartphone with mobile data and turn on the "Mobile hotspot". on the checking for software updates a.s.a.p. turn off the mobile hotspot it will say could not connect
UPDATE 1. for those who do not have access to hotspot. be prepared to disable your wifi at your modem.
agree to the next prompts it will ask you if you want to set up security create a 4-digit PIN i suggest 1234. After you create the 4-digit PIN, you turn off the tablet and turn it on again.
When the tablet is on again and "Enter PIN" appears, don't worry if you don't see the camera icon on the display. What you need is the USER icon (what I mean is that "human face" icon which is located on the TOP RIGHT CORNER). Click that "human face" icon, then you'll see "Add user" so click on that "Add user". Follow through as a new user, you'll need to create a Samsung account or if you have one already you'll need to log into your Samsung account. UPDATE 2. I SKIPPED THIS ACCOUNT SETUP.
UPDATE 3. You'll have 2 users, you will not be able to erase the first one.
now you have access to storage place the this https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...FRP_REMOVE.apk
to downloads run the app on install.
full tool here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...pps Full.zip
go back to users first user owner tap it you will log in to that account it will say set up tablet drag the notification bar down software update smart switch ignore it enable WiFi connect to any one you can then tap setup tablet follow i will ask for a password i skipped it and got in and went to settings now i had access to backup and reset full wipe done smile
Thanks to everyone who has worked on this i have updated these instructions Originally Posted by dama0002
