Im guessing you are installing a prerooted rom, so are you using the right zip file? remember to make the FTF you need to use the flashable zip file.

I'd have to unlock my bootloader, which I do not want to do until I can safely back up my DRM keys and so forth. I know unlocking sony phones removes bravia engine and other stuff.

I bought it with this firmware. It's 4.4.2 19.1.A.0.486
So I have no idea.
Plus, the xperia firmware tool says that this is the only firmware for this model(D5316.)

I have tried googling it but no luck.
Only way for me to root is to unlock bootloader it seems.
EDIT; I got root access!!
I unlocked the bootloader via flashtool. I still have bravia engine/camera/etc.

here are the steps I did..I will do my best to provide anything I can.
First thing; unlock the bootloader. I unlocked it via flashtool. i still have bravia engine/clear audio, so that's intact. Put the SUPERSU 2.40 on your SD Card along with the dual recovery flash file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/t2-ultra/development/t2-ultra-xzdualrecovery-qa-t2823793
After that I used fastboot to install the CWM recovery( fastboot.exe flash recovery boot.img), and rebooted.
I rebooted into CWM and flashed the dual recovery. follow the instructions to boot into TWRP(I like this recovery.)and flash SUPERSU 2.40. Wipe cache/dalvik/system. If you get a bootloop, reboot into recovery and flash the pre rooted stock firmware from here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/t2-ultra/development/t2-ultra-d5303-4-4-3-pre-rooted-stock-t2962677. then reboot.
another fun fact? I also successfully backed up the TA Partition. woo!
What file did you flash at first? Is it T2U-SS_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_FW-207_v01.img ?
It didn't work for me, I could not reboot into CWM or whatever custom recovery it contains.
Thank you!

Sure.
BEFORE ANYTHING; Put supersu 2.40 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/t2-ultra/development/t2-ultra-xzdualrecovery-qa-t2823793 on your SD Card!!
I used flashtool(http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php)to unlock the bootloader first. I still had my TA Keys so it should be fine.
after unlocking the bootloader, reboot into fastboot mode(I think it's while the phone boots up, you hold power+up vol). and use this; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2685932 to boot into CWM recovery.
Once you're in CWM, Install the dual recovery and reboot phone. Hold down vol when the green LED turns on, you will reboot into TWRP. Touch controls won't work but if you press the power button and press it again, touch works.
Install SuperSU 2.40 and you should be okay..
That kernel works on 4.4.2? in the CWM thread right in the first post it says requirements 4.3. Need more details before I move forward with this.
I am on a US D5316 running 4.4.2 , build 19.1.A.0.486.

nope you just need to wipe data and cache after that install this zip and if you want it include gapps too, after all installed successfully turn on your phone wait it. for first boot it take a while and if this very longer / stuck in black screen turn off your phone and flash the boot.img from this zip with fastboot mode from your phone and turn on again and it will be worked
And how do i acess recovery to install the rom? Do i need to flash a custom one? And so when before flashing do i have to delete any of those files that are in the root of the zip? And the boot.imh what is, the rom? The recovery?

1. Using XperiFirm (Xperia Firmware Downloader developed by Igor Eisberg) to download desired firmware from Sony server.
2. Using Flash Tool to create your own TFT.
3. Using PRFCreator (Pre-Rooted Firmware Creator developed by zxz0O0) to create your own flashable zip file of Pre-rooted Lollipop firmware.

If for some reason the "downloaded prerooted" method does not work, whatever went wrong will probably also prevent your selfmade zip from working. So I'd try to get the downloaded one to work before trying a homegrown one.

Above said is step-by-step to get flashable zip file only. Install it on your phone as follows:
1. Downgrade to KitKat (4.4.2 is recommended because it can be rooted directly)
2. Install Custom Recovery (Philz Touch is recommendable because I have boot loop with TWRP)
you cap bypass these step if already have Custom Recovery
3. Copy flashable zip file to SD Card
4. Reboot your phone to Recovery mode and wipe you phone (wipe for clean installation is recommended) or format system. DO NOT REBOOT after that.
5. Install flashable zip file from SD Card then powever off your phone
6. Using FlashTool to flash your phone with TFT file EXCLUDE SYSTEM

Hi can you be more specific on what to wipe at philz touch because there are lots to wipe options in the philz recovery, do i have to wipe all? also from twrp's recovery so please be specific what to wipe because im afraid to wipe all that doesnt have to be wiped,
also after installing flashable zip in the recovery turning off the phone isn't an option there is only restart button there so is it alright to reboot phone after installing flashable zip in recovery then just turn it off after and continue to using flashtool?
and last one, at using flashtool ist it the stock firmware that i need to flash? is it alright to exclude all? or do i have to check the wipes there and also the kernels below excluding system only? thanks

Hi, I tried this multiple times, im rooted 4.4.4 then installed dual recovery then from one of those recovery then i installed "flashsable.zip" after installing flashable zip which is in "step 5" you mentioned turning off phone, do i really need to do the "step 6"? because i notice something in step 5 since after installing the flashable zip thru recovery there is no turn off option so i choose to reboot then i noticed i started my phone with lollipop installed and superSU installed, but i still did whats in your procedure which makes things complicated since i thought if i didnt continue to the whole process maybe something might go wrong , so i turned off my phone and continued to step 6, i flashed my phone using the stock firmware of lollipop then what happened is the superSU is gone.
so my main point is do i really have to continue to step 6?? or even just up to step 5 is fine?
if continuing to step 6 is important please be more specific thanks

You have to do Step 6 just in case flashable zip file contain SYSTEM ONLY (include Options were not checked when using PRFCreator).
In Step 6, flash your phone with FTF file EXCLUDE SYSTEM. That mean you need to check on System Option within the box of Exclude.
Folks, we already have a thread covering EXACTLY this question - was it really necessary to open a new one to ask all questions over and over again?

THanks buddy. I got my lollipop rooted and working. But there is one thing itching me about lollipop. Even though the camera result looks great in this new OS, but the OS new design theme looks sluggish. I do not feel it is working like it should. I mean a very bad version from SONY. KitKat theme was way more simpler and lighter than this lollipop ****piece. Besides cleanmaster keeps telling me the RAM USAGE around 68%-70% all the time:silly:, even though I applied the same precautions I had on kitkat installation. Kitkat used to run on 70% in heavy usage, otherwise it would run lighter around 46% RAM.
Summing up. Lollipop Version for SONY PHONES, SUCKS

Does flashing cyanogenmod replace the boot partition and delete recovery?

Hello guys,
I've got a Sony Xperia M C1905 with Android 4.1.2, white, Firmware 15.1.C.2.8, rooted using towelroot and SuperSU installed as system app version 2.82, pseudo-pro activated.
I think you all know that the Xperia M has no stock recovery and flashing to recovery using "fastboot flash recovery twrp-nicki.img" doesn't work.
Instead I did it using the boot image from https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480556 .
Now the big question for me is:
Does flashing cyanogenmod replace the /boot partition? Will I lose the recovery? If that is the case, can I reflash the modified boot image (also if this will make cyanogenmod unbootable) and that way get the recovery back and restore stock rom backup?
This is very important for me, I don't want to brick my Xperia M, and I am happy at the moment, because I have CWM recovery and root access. But for me there is something missing if I can't install new roms and do experimental things that maybe softbrick the OS and force me to restore ROM using recovery.
Thanks!!!
Pascal
P.S. So to sum up:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Does flashing a ROM change /boot
Does it delete my recovery or am I safe?

1. You should upgrade to 4.3 (I think latest is 15.4.A.1.9) before flashing anything
2. Yes, flashing any ROM will replace your /boot.
3. Flash TWRP into FOTA kernel.

Problem is that I didn't receive an update notification, and the tool on Windows (i think it was called pc companion or something like that) didn't find updates.
Is there maybe anywhere a 4.3 backup done in cwm? Then I could flash it using cwm as long as I have it and then use twrp on 4.3

It's because Xperia M is not anymore supported by Sony.
