Battery life so far on the G4 is horrible - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is the G4 really this bad? I bought one a few days ago, coming from the G2. I'm waiting for it to settle in but damn.. this thing goes through 3000mah like a fat kid through candy. My G2, now 2 years old lasts twice as long SOT. 6 hours to 3. I just.. I want to love the 4, but it is just too power hungry. Does this beast settle down over time? I have a week more to return it for something else, and on the verge.

Since firmware v10c there's a problem with GPS sucking battery. Try setting it to “battery saving“. Perhaps this improves things...

Yeah. Read that. Shouldn't have to turn everything down or off in 2015. I so love this phone but wow. The battery is nonsense. I went to it because my G2 was/is a champ. What is going on with this thing?

The battery in the g2 is much better, but finding a flagship from 2015 with a better battery than the g4 (and a comparable camera, screen, size etc.) is impossible.
It charges more than one percent per minute with6a normal charger, and you can buy a spare battery and a fast charger but the sot isn't going to get much better than what you're expering now. It's still the best phone ever imho.

I got a free battery with it, and the charging cradle. Which is nice. I guess I just got spoiled. The G2 is so awesome, and I expected this to be the same. It's not. Not even close. I bought this G4, a Note 5 and an S6 at the same time. Both Sammy's perform much better, and that pains me to say. Ugg.

You could help if you complain to LG about the GPS battery drain problem like me and others did already. Try “battery saving“ on GPS and post your results afterwards. With a decent screen brightness, I always get 4+ hours Screen on time. Not playing games or doing heavy battery draining tasks, though.

Man oh man, you are having better luck than I am. I might have a faulty unit, not sure, but the battery on this one is like driving an old car with a big V8. When you stomp on the gas you can literally see the gas gauge go down before your eyes. This phone is no different. My G2 was honestly 3X better than the G4. Good luck to you guys, and I mean that sincerely, I do. But I'm returning this thing. For me, at least... it is a pass.

I get as good if not better battery life on here than my g2/g3...a few kernel tweaks with kernel adiutor and using greenify to settle hungry apps...i highly recommend keeping g4 as you won't find much better battery without a lower end processor

Kind of the point though. I shouldn't have to tweak settings, and root a brand new phone to make it work. I'm not here to bash the G4 (I own it) but it stinks.. Ok.. bashed it lol. Seriously. I have the exact same apps loaded on it as my G2 and if sucks battery like a $2 hooker. The Camera is good, not sure as great as was reported. The speaker was kind of bashed from the reviews but I think it is AWESOME! So loud. But... battery. Nope. I don't care if they give me 40 free ones to swap, I shouldn't have to.

That's kind of what I meant. With my debloated, greenified, taskered, tweaked and optimized g2 I got sot of up to 10 hours, the g4 gives me 4-5. Except from every test ever and every user experience, I think not even LG tries to pretend that the g4 has the slightest chance to reach sot like the g2 did. You're the first person to say so ever, so I assumed the only explanation could be that your sot on the g2 were mediocre.

If you got 10 hours sot with g2 you were heavily underclocked and at that rate wtf is the point...i actually got a much smoother experience and better battery life by raising the min clock on big and little cores as with the stock settings both jumped around ridiculously chewing up battery on simple processes...we shouldn't have to root to fix anything but it's never the case...and getting 21 hours out of my g4 with 6 hours sot with browsing some gaming and lots of youtube vids I'm beyond impressed...h811 has no custom kernel yet so no undervolt is present...this phone will just continue to get better imo...i cant believe the complaints i see about a device that surpasses 95% of anything on the market

If you don't use auto, what manual settings for brightness would you normally use on the G4 ? Mention the figure in % or the range.
Are you on wifi or data, mixed ? what share each.
i gather you are on H815.

hey there @android404 mind sharing your g2 setup for those 10 hours and screen brightness also? i'm thinking my g2 might be a lemon i never reach even 6 hours with no heavy usage but i am on stock rom and kernel and i don't even use greenify i have no problem rooting it so please can you tell me your rom kernel clocks and whatnot? thx in advance.

Update. I went for broke and did a factory reset before I was forced to return it. Seems to have made a world of difference. Now it is performing the way I would expect it too. Not as good as the G2, but not draining before my eyes. I think something must have been borked. I'm going to be cautiously optimistic atp, but I have a week more of daily use to play with it. (Might get an extension) but so far, in the last 26 hours it is night and day difference. Whew. Really didn't want to take it back.

Normally keep it at 60% and mix between wifi and data but 75% of time it is on wifi. H812.

Yeah. Much better. Been unplugged for 10.5 hours and sot is just over an hour. 84% battery left. Same usage before the reset and it would have already been next to dead. Something was mucked up. I take back what I said before. This is what I expected.

Glad to hear it...i hate to see people leave for bad experience on a device that has such potential...development is slow atm but once cm gets stabilty and a few more variants have unlock/workaround this device will gain notoriety like the g2 had and the g2 was a beast...was my favorite device to date and i see the same potential here

New to Andorid & G3, first few days, weak battery than expected

Hey guys,
So I just moved from iPhone finally, first few days with the G3 and I'm wowed of course, my only concern is that I expected the battery to be a lot better, of course it's better than the iPhone, but I did not expect it to drain so fast, first few % goes slow but then it drops fast, and I'm not doing anything special or massive use, brightness set to auto, and it's trickle charged, I dropped to like 20% after 2:20 hours of screen use.
So my question, is that what I can expect from the G3 because of the massive resolution? or it's just on the beginning?
Would love to hear from your experience! any tips would be cool!
Thanks!
Its because of the qhd screen, better screen, more battery drain, if u root u can adjust a few things to help a little, mine isent to bad
My first 10 percent drop I can get almost a hour of screen time, barely 2 1/2 at 50%. Thinking of returning this for the M8..

This is true, but because you're a new user, I'd highly recommend not rooting for a while, until you've worked out the kinks in your phone. You can set the brightness to a certain percentage, and then auto-brightness uses that percentage as a base and will not let the screen go lower than that level. As for apps that can help you out, I use and highly recommend this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antutu.powersaver
You can select 3 different levels of saving, and I seem to get around 20% more battery life when use it. Or you can look for anything else along those lines. LG also has some built-in tools to help keep your battery going. There's the built-in battery saver option: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-use-battery-saver-lg-g3
There's also a few other things, this site covers it pretty well: http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-g3-help-tips-and-tricks
Anyways, hope that helps, and welcome to the family!
Hey thanks for the help guys!
I will definitely try some of the suggestions, and also considering to root it.
Does it get better with time tho? I mean this is just my 3rd of 4th cycle.
Thanks again guys!

Yes, usually takes a few circles to the battery to settle down. Mine at the beginning was draining fast too but now I'm getting almost 5 hours of screen on time. That's pretty good in my opinion. I use my phone a lot and by the end of the day I'm over 30%. My gs4 was over way before that.

My battery was horrible the first week on my g2 but seems better on the g3, I don't think it will get better than this and if it does that's awesome!
I also feel like it doesn't use as much battery when screen on as my g2 did.

[Q] Need a help on a new phone.

Hi Guys!
I'm currently looking for a new phone. I can only buy midrange phones atm and since the G4 and S6 are released, I expect both of their predecessor's price will go lower. Apparently, I'm torn between the previous flagships, G3 and S5, which is still of course still capable now. I really like the G3 over the s5 but I am bothered by the battery life that most people say is bad. I mostly need the phone to school at around 12 hrs off the charger. At school I usually just text and call a few times, take pictures and notes, occasional time wasting games on breaks and also I listen to music on trips to and from school [approx 1.5 hrs of music]. My question is, will the G3's battery be capable of that amount of usage? Or will I benefit on the S5 on this? Thanks in Advance!

That's very similar to my daily usage pattern and my G3 never died on me. You can expect between 4-5h of screen on time. It really depends on your signal, if you live in a poor signal area, any phone will take a hit in battery life.
The majority of people who complain about G3's battery life came from a G2 or similar phones, and they're used to getting 6+ h of screen on time. For them, it was a downgrade in the battery department.

Now I'm starting to get really excited to get this phone more, well, another question, are there any major gripes on this phone? Also coming from an old phone with a really mediocre battery life (Xperia Sola), I think the battery life of this is definitely enough. Based on what I read before, It's mostly the battery, but as you said, based on my usage, I would get throughout the day easily, so the batteries are crossed out. Any other major thing (flaw?) you would say?

It's all relevant, some things that annoy some people might not be an issue for others, and vice versa.
For me, there are 2 things i don't like about the G3, but they are not that big of a deal, i can live with them. The first is i would've liked if the display can get a bit brighter (especially on very sunny days). The second, coming from the last 4 generations of nexus devices, i miss the software fluidity of stock android, despite that i appreciate some of the feature additions LG has thrown in their "skin".
All in all, i would take the G3 over the Galaxy S5 anytime.
Ok, I went to a local LG store in my place and played on the LG G3 a bit. The G4 was there, and I'm drooling over it, the leather back was so nice. Ok ok back to my question. After using it for a few minutes, I noticed the brightness to be low and I checked it, it was at 90%. My problem is as I am trying to increase it, there's a warning shown that the temp was high so I can't increase it more. My question is, does it happen often? The overheating?
As an LG G 3 power user I can confirm that the phone will indeed heat up from time to time, however, the phone you played with was most likely plugged in to a charger from what I can read.
Any phone that's being charged up and used at the same time will get hot, it simply puts more strain on the battery.
You should be able to get the 12 hours you need out of your device on a full charge, especially with the power save g to that come with it, however don't expect do go a full day (24hrs) without it having to hit the cradle.
I hope this helps.

You can expect much much much better battery life with G3 or S5 than your soon-to-be-ex-phone Xperia Sola.
Both G3 and S5 almost the same battery life, even though G3 is better in standby time.
If you buy G3, immediately update it to latest version. Your phone will not overheat ever, like mine never did
Only hard gaming for a 1hr+ time can make it overheat.
Well...Depends. I don't think it'll last for 12 hours. You get 5hours of SOT only on the lowest brightness setting, higher the brightness lower the SOT. For me in school it lasts for 8 hours max, then gotta charge it. Also it's true I'm using it most of the time for 4G so that may be why.

I really think it's battery life would be enough, as what you all said, also since I can manage to use my sola for that amount of time which has a ridiculously short battery life. Hahaha! XD. Also thanks for the info! I'll definitely update it, to get a taste of the lollipop's sweetness.

I only use 3g (H+ is enough for me), so definitely/ probably I can get it pass that 12 hr mark. Signal was a bit of a problem though at school, since the school is near a jail, they seem to have network jammers installed. Weird.

What battery issues?

Reading all the reviews and comparisons of this phone to other flagships before I bought it, I thought I was going to be settling for sub-par battery life. I bought an extra charger for work so that I could make sure I had enough juice throughout the day.
But now, I feel like I've been lied to. This phone has the best battery life I've ever seen on a stock ROM. I'm never below 70% at the end of the day, and I average about 4-5 hours of screen-on time. My battery usage screen usually estimates that I'll get between 28-36 hours of life out of my battery. I charge it every night, so I haven't tested that.
Am I the only one? Did I get lucky? I really don't understand all the fuss I've seen about the battery.
I've only had mine a couple of days but it seems okay to me, better than my HTC One (m7). I ran it down to 20% last night after loading programs and playing with it all day, several phone calls, streaming Rhapsody for a couple of hours. I didn't check the stats but it was off the charger for about 14 1/2 hours. I have marginal cell service in the building where I work and that has always contributed to excessive battery drain. Overall I'm pleased, haven't had an LG phone since the flip days.
I think many people having battery problems are with T-Mobile. They've got a piece of support bloatware that kills the battery, and people in areas of poor coverage (T-Mobile!) will consume a lot also. Plus, both these things heat the phone up so it will charge slower.
My battery drains a lot faster when I setup few things.
In smart lock set trusted places. (this keep on checking for location every few minutes)
Enabled google now for all screens .
With these two the battery drained like open tap; disabled both of em and its very good for such a screen.
My G2 had much better battery life than the G4 . I've debloated , factory restored, turned off location, lowered brightness etc... My free battery will be coming shortly so I hope it is better
This should help answer your question. I have the worst screen on time with this phone, I hit over 3 hours maybe twice. 2 hr 30 mins is usually all i get. I attached 1000 screenshots to prove that lol. Get 4 hrs SOT easy on my M9 and Nexus 6. Fortunately, standby time is glorious on this phone.

Lol... I was thinking I posted this in the general (non-carrier-specific) forum.
Definitely not the g2 battery, but more than sufficient. Usually charge every other night 3-4 hours of sot. Minor debloating done.
Current stats... This is over 13 hours, went to the zoo and took a lot of pictures of the little one.

I get the same battery usage with the G4 "stock" as I did with the G2 "ROM'd and Rooted" which I would assume after the G4 is ROM'd and Rooted it will be better.
I went almost 4 days at one point with out charging my G2. Granted it was lighter use, but still.

This phone has the best battery life I've ever seen on a smartphone, period. And although I haven't been around for awhile, my first rooted smartphone was the HTC Evo, and there have literally been hundreds in between then, and now. So it's safe to say, that I've got my experience to be able to judge what's good and what's not. And although it's just my personal opinion, or I just got LG's one and only "super" smartphone that no one else got, and my battery is unlike anyone else's, it's highly unlikely. This battery is the shiznit, hands down. Not to mention, the LG G Pad X8.3, not to be confused with the older LG G pad 8.3, also has amazing battery life, and pretty much is just awesome all around. No lag, excellent wifi connection, excellent cellular reception, and, the specs are up to date if not advanced. Lg doing their thing right now, we just need to figure out a bootloader unlock and root, and we're good to go.

Yeah, this sounds like the kind of experience I'm having, which doesn't seem to be typical from what I've read. Maybe we're just lucky.
the only time I get crappy battery life is when I am at work and that's a weak signal area. While I'm at home I easily get 4 hours screen time and still have around 20% battery left. Very happy with the battery life.
Battery life reports are always going to be subjective. You never know the full use of a device. Most people focus on data, WiFi, brightness, sot, GPS, and Bluetooth. Never really here much about what apps and what's running in the background.

Agreed. I average only 2hr 30 mins SOT, but then, I keep my brightness on 100%, wi-fi always off. I go same settings on other phones, but get like 4 hrs, but weaker standy-by time
I'm in the same boat as the OP. I've been so surprised with all the people screaming about battery life and I'm like really? Because I haven't been able to kill this thing in a day yet. I am rarely below the 40's % mark at worst when I go to bed. I got the spare battery kit from LG but I haven't had to use it once. I suppose I'm just not as much of a power user as I once thought lol.
For those getting great battery life with 4+ hours SOT, out of curiosity, what screen brightness are you guys using? Do you have auto-brightness enabled? What apps are you actually using? etc. etc. etc.
I have found that the battery life on this phone, so far for me has been about average. No worse or better than I expected. I typically keep my brightness around 50%, have wifi on, and play a fair amount of games. I think the games running are what kills it for me for the most part. If I'm not gaming I can't possibly see using 4+ hours SOT. I get bored of reading things fairly easily.
That being said I just killed a bunch of bloatware verizon had manifested into my phone for no other reason than to make us angry. I also installed greenify to stop some background apps from running. I'm very interested to see if it gets better going forward.
Use lux from the app store for auto brightness. You can tailor to your preference.

LG G4 - Pitiful battery life

Hello all,
I recently purchased a LG G4 Back In July , on Verizon, switching over from A Galaxy Note 3 (Tmobile). Honestly I really really like the phone, but I think the battery life is pitiful for a $700 dollar "Flagship" phone. I mean not once has it ever lasted the full day. I had to buy a spare battery kit, with 2 batteries, and days when im out from 6am to late at night, I go through 2 batteries, and have to put the 3rd one in. I mean , this is simply unacceptable for a phone like this.
Also, the camera is excellent WHEN it works. A lot of times, it doesn't take the picture right away, there is a delay, and many times it falls out of focus. This is certainly not the high quality camera they advertised.
I am hoping there is a way to fix these 2 issues, mainly the battery issue though because it is awful in my opinion. Is there any tweaks or fixes for these issues?
You've barely given any relevant information other than how unhappy you are with the device, so I would suggest that you elaborate on that.
You could inform us if you're a heavy/light user, if you keep NFC, LTE, Bluetooth, Syncing, Wi-Fi, on during the whole day or maybe if you are used to 100% brightness display. Maybe you should check in your settings what is draining your battery and provide us the info.
I'm having a pretty good experience with the phone so far. It surely lasts a whole day with 3:30 to 4h SoT. I don't even need/have a spare battery.

One person having an issue doesn't mean it's not a great camera. You'll find it's likely still the best flagship camera of any OEM.
Battery use is so dependent on which apps you run, which mods you have, how often the screen is on, what brightness, signal strength, wifi, bluetooth, etc etc etc...
I came from a galaxy s3 and reckon the battery on g4 is awesome. I use it solidly on internet for 2 hrs a day (to and from work), check messages etc through the day, usually internet at lunch. And then evening time check facebook etc over WiFi infront of telly.
I unplug at 6am and plug in around 11pm with around 3% left. I bought a 2nd battery and only needed to use it twice. It has to be how you're using it.

13 hours on battery for me today and still 71% left. Light usage but it does illustrate that the battery life can be excellent.

of course, you can get excellent battery life on every smartphone - just put it in aeroplane mode..
I get MAX 3h of SOT time on my G4 - this is with fixed brightness at 65% (at all times) and only wifi and 3g enabled (NFC, bluetooth and everything else is turned off all the time)
to be fair I have yet to own a smartphone that lasts me more than 4h SOT..
the thing that annoys me the most is the broken knock code used to unlock the phone - it works 20% of the time at best
its a completely broken feature LG has not properly addressed since launch of the device (I am on V10e software)

There have been numerous firmware updates since. Have you ever performed a full factory reset after getting those updates ?
If the answer is no, then this is one potential reason for poor battery life. What you could try is to clear the system cache in recovery. Note, i said system cache not apps cache. Idea here is when updates come in there could be conflicts and it causes the system to work harder. clearing system cache might help, if it does not then the only option is a factory reset and then a manual install.
not restore. You install apps in batches, monitor, then install more and so on. You can restore contacts etc. but apps themselves will have to be reinstalled. Sometimes apps go rogue and have to be reinstalled. Its hard to tell which app is causing the issue. Otherwise you could just reinstall whatever app that seems to be taking up more than it should be.

What are you doing on your phone ? mention apps.
How do you access the net. How good is your signal. What are you doing when you access the net.

What types of shots are these. It can happen with portraits some times. It will focus on the background behind the person instead of the person and the face becomes softer and the background very sharp.
For this set focus little above the chest instead of the face. If they are wearing dark clothing this will cause other issues so focus on something else at equal distance that isn't dark.
Always check the shot at the pixel level soon after you took it. Rather than at the end of the day.

Just to clarify: I had everything turned on for those 13 hours - wifi/data/bluetooth/GPS. I also made 2 phone calls and did a bit of Chromecasting using the BT Sport app for a couple of hours. Or to put it another way, I didn't take any measures at all to preserve battery life.
I used to complain just like you're doing OP ( @dredmentia ) and fixed it all with a Zerolemon battery .
Is the phone bulky/no leather back/not easy to handle... , it sure is but if battery life is crucial then it gotta get fixed.
End my day anywhere between 7 to 13 hours of sot depending on WiFi or 4g and high CPU freqs, tried light usage and hit 3 days with 12 hours sot. Snap/insta/twit/fb/periscope/... Nothing kills this battery in a day.
When and if we get a kernel I'll move back to factory battery at least then I know I'm in control of how CPU works coz while optimizing the phone for wakelocks that's the only thing I have no control over...
As for now I'm just trying to burn thru this battery every day so I can charge it every night...
Last phone was a Z3 Sony and that really grabbed my attention with its battery life in stock form, almost too perfect, Almost.

This is what your talking about? Looks like a pretty nice battery.
LG G4 Battery Case, ZeroLemon LG G4 8500mAh TriCell Extended Battery + Soft TPU Full Edge Protection Case (Compatible with all LG G4 variants) (4897010519648)
It works with the USB charger that came with the phone ?
Did someone seriously just ask me if I kept the brightness on the screen at 100%???? Obviously im not doing that, im not some idiot. I know the screen eats up most of the battery. I keep the brightness extremely low way under 50%, or on auto., The battery still last a short amount of time. Its not acceptable

Then maybe something is wrong with the phone. I got also 4-5hr SoT.
It can't be just 2hr.

Note 4 vs LG G4

Hi
I'm thinking to switch from a note 4 to a LG G4 but before I wanted to decide on want to ask the G4 users how there experience is with the phone. How is battery life and heat with this phone? How is camera?
I'm a moderate gamer but I watch often movies on my phone. S pen is not that important for me
the biggest problem of LG G4 is only about battery. I personally just can achieve 4-6 hours of battery life. My G4 was worked normally until last week: the temperature became 60'C, always restarting when overheated (now my G4 is at LG Service Center). Camera is absolutely the best, even note5 can't beat it. Screen size is only 5.5, so if you came from Note3 or Note4, you'll miss roomy screen. So, if you need best camera, buy it, otherwise upgrade to other phone IMHO
I dont know how battery life will improve with the marshmallow update. I just updated yesterday so time will show that. I would say battery life is about 4-5hrs SOT. If you are used to longer screen on time you might be in for a suprise. However the camera is the best i have seen. I don't know how it would compare to the note 5. Another device worth looking at is the Nexus 6P. It is up there with the best so maybe go into a store and check it out. Bottom line im happy with my LG G4. No lag at all

I came from a Note 4. I loved my Note, but figured out, that after a while I didn't need the S-Pen anymore.
The G4 is not as "Productive" as the Note, but comes along with an awesome camera and, if you're rooted and got the right apps on you phone, with a good battery life.
In fact, I'm happy to have changed from Samsung to the G4, but it's surely a question of taste, too. But I can recommend it. I'm super satisfied Cheers

How is battery life and the heating of the phone these 2 aspects are really important for me

I have no heat problems and as I said: Battery life is good for me. Usually I have 2 days until I have to charge my phone again (If I'm not using it very often).
Otherwise I have to charge it every 24 hours, if I'm using it alot.
I think there's no big difference between the battery life of the Note 4 and the G4. I usually had to charge both phones at night, which is pretty much ok for me.
If I had to make a choice I'd say the LG G4 lasts a little longer (if rooted) Cheers
EDIT: If I'm power using it I get like 5-6 hours SOT, which is also similar to the Note 4
Remember results may vary.
The guy above me is getting 5 -6 hours SOT. But for me I can only achieve that when I am at home on wifi all day. And maybe the same is true for follow_and_feel. So it really depends on your day to day activities.
In a nutshell. If you're in a area with spotty connectivity, battery life will take a huge plummet. On work days my building is in a spotty area, and the phone lasts me until the end of the day with maybe 5-10%. With 3ish hours SOT under my belt. If the network wasn't spotty I'd probably look at 4 hours or more.
The only time I experience heat is under heavy usage, very spotty areas, or while using a garbage app like snapchat. Otherwise on normal day to day use with messaging, browsing, social media, the odd video here and there the phone stays cool.
Camera on this bad boy is out of this world. I've seen some of the shots people have taken and they look very professional. To the average person, they would barely be able to tell the difference between a G4 picture and one taken with a proper camera. The camera is probably the biggest selling point.
Lastly gaming. Gaming is a no no. Battery goes down very fast, and the phone eventually heats up as well. You can get away with some light games like Clash of Clans but don't expect the battery to hold up. The GPU is weaker than it's hot headed older brother (Snapdragon 810). If gaming is very big for you, I'd honestly say get the Note.
Videos is not an issue though. You might get some warmth though but nothing major
