HTC One M8 - Unable to tether to Samsung Tablet? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello
originally it was a Verizon phone (usa), but currently being used on Telus in Canada (if it makes any different)
i have 4GB of data each month, phone works fine,
i am trying to activate Mobile Hotspot so i can tether my samsung tab pro to it.
on the phone:
Settings > More > Mobile network sharing > Mobile Hotspot,
touch the "OFF" to turn it on, and a pop-up appears saying
"Warning, An error has occurred. Please try again later"
What am i missing?
how to fix this error?
i have checked on the Telus site, and there doesnt appear to be any restrictions to tethering
[i have tried to attach a screen pic, but unable to:

If you are still on the stock Verizon ROM, I believe VZN blocks tethering (unless you have a VZN account that confirms you paid for the feature). Meaning, it will interfere with tething/hotspot when used on other networks, even if that carrier doesn't limit tethering.
If that is the case (on stock VZN ROM), check to see what ROMs that support the VZN version also have working WiFi hotspot. So you may consider unlocking the bootloader (if not already) and flashing a custom ROM.
At least with AT&T (who also blocks tethering) just flashing most any non-ATT based ROM will tethering/hotspot working as long as your carrier supports it.

i have nothing against a different ROM, but being a complete knoob, i dread the thought of re-installing the few games and apps back with all the saved data... argh. but it would be nice to tether my tablet.

If you don't already, use the app Titanium Backup to backup your apps and app data. Well worth the few dollars (US) to unlock the batch backup and restore functions (and backup/restore all (or as desired) your user apps and data with a few taps).

As an aside, I would also add that TiBu is a great way of undoing updates that weren't exactly upgrades. Just backup before you update. WELL worth the money for this alone.

[Q] Thinking of trying new ROMs

As the Title says, I am thinking of trying new ROMS for my phone. I am posting this in the T-Mobile Q & A because...well...I have a T-Mobile phone and I am not sure if other manufacturers have their file systems the same as T-Mobiles.
Anyway before I go ROM happy so-to-speak...I am just wondering a few things;
STATEMENT: My phone is unlocked (I called TMo and got the code from them)
QUESTION: will my phone retain it's unlocked status?
STATEMENT: My phone is rooted
QUESTION: Will my phone retain it's Root Status?
ASSUMPTION: Yes so long as the ROM I flash too has SU.
STATEMENT: I purchased apps from the Market such as Titanium Backup Pro, Super User Elite, Root Explorer, ect...
QUESTION: Will these be "Carried over" to the new ROM and still be installed or would I have to re-install them?
QUESTION: Are all the apps from the market compatible with all the roms out there? (For example: ES File Explorer, or games that use the accelerometer, or Market Enabler as I am in afghanistan right now as a civilian contractor) and if not, how can I tell if an app is compatible with a certain ROM?
If I could get answers to these questions before I go and flash a new ROM (Especially the Unlocked Phone question) that would be great.

I apologize as I do not know this. Maybe try to find someone in here that is using this phone on ATT. As an assumption I do not think flashing a custom rom will overwrite your unlocking.

YES, any app you have purchased in the market will carry on to any ROM or phone you use so long as your sign in with the google account you used to purchase the app. Well, as long as it's a compatible app with that phone.

Any app that you are currently using will be compatible with any TouchWiz ROM. There is, however, a couple AOSP/CM7 ROM's out there and you could, not probably, but could run into compatibility issues.
All of your paid apps are liked to your Google sign in and account. So as soon as you reload on your new rom you can redownload them whenever. It will usually give you an option in the first startup to keep it linked and autobackup.
Most roms (if not all) have root. So You should be autorooted. As far as unlocking I am not sure, but if not couldn't you just unlock it again using the code they gave you?

You will not lose the SIM unlock when you flash a new ROM. What I did find though, was that I was unable to unlock the phone while running CM7, I had to flash back to a stock-based ROM.

Well before I flashed to Juggernaut I backed up my APKs and of course had to reinstall them. Redownloading them from the market was a last resort as our internet speeds out here in afghanistan would of meant it would of taken HOURS to download.

[Q] SC-03D (Japan NTT Docomo - Most similar to T-Mobile) Unlocked - No Mobile Network

Hey all.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S II LTE SC-03D from NTT Docomo in Japan. It is most similar (internally) to the the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy SII, but has a single push-button on the bottom with a haptic back button and a haptic menu button on the sides of the push button.
It is SIM unlocked by the Dealer, and I'm using it here in the States while I'm here.
Only voice and text works...
With a custom ROM (I used Darkside), the mobile networks DO work, but the haptics don't work (I haven't thoroughly tested, though - there may be many more issues. The package also flashed the kernel. With this ROM, I was able to get Edge connectivity, voice, and text but (presumably) the kernel didn't support the haptic keys (I'm told things like GPS or bluetooth won't work, either)
Basically, I know I can get this thing working right. Presumably, the kernel needs to remain stock to get haptic (and likely other basic) functionality. Am I right?
So, that being said, can I use a ROM and just flash back to stock kernel? (I'm guessing there are some ROMs that can use a stock kernel?)
Can I back up my Kernel? I'm familiar with Odin (I have a stock complete reset image of the SC-03D). What do I need to do that? Please note, my stock is an OMKK3 kernel - and it's not listed anywhere. I've checked the CF posts, and just about everywhere else I can think of.
Is there another option? I have flashed the modem. I used 2 different T-Mobile modems, and (and even a Telus Modem) - but I have zero connectivity - not even voice / text. This leads me to believe that, like other components in the SC-03D, it is simply not the same radio as in a T989.
I don't need the crazy functionality of a super ROM.
Bottom line is I need a fully functional phone; Voice, Text, and Data - even if only at Edge speeds.
More details in the copy / paste from another thread:
My SC-03D is SIM unlocked by NTT Docomo.
Here's my problem -I only post this here because it may be of interest to the group:
- Went to the US. Took the unlocked SC-03D.
- Bought a T-Mobile prepaid phone, activated the SIM with the prepaid phone.
- Selected the plan that offers unlimited phone, text, and web (up to 400MB / mo @ 4G speeds; throttled to 2G speeds after 400 MB)
- Put the activated SIM in the SC-03D
Issues:
- The voice /text service works but there is absolutely NO internet connectivity. There is no emblem that denotes the connection type (E.G. 4G, LTE, H, etc..)
What I did to try to fix it:
- Ensured network mode was enabled
- Manually set APN
- Cycled power several times (removed battery, etc. You know, the basics)
...That didn't work, so I...
- Rooted my phone - as of the date of this post, I can confirm that the Zerg Rush exploit DOES indeed work.
Using clockwork mod's ROM manager (available on Apps), I was able to download Clock Work Recovery - after reading this post, I learned that the chipset was similar to the T-Mobile version, so I selected that option when I flashed CWR.
That seemed to work just fine, and CWR loads with no problems.
- Rooted the phone.
- Downloaded several custom ROMs
- Tried to install via CWR
-- ROMs would not install. Other installs did work though (For instance, Just as a test - the GApps packages that came with some of the ROMs loaded with no problem)
-- Errors would always occur in CWR. (Status 1). A quick forum search said that I should just try to re-copy the .zip files to the SDCard. Redownloaded, recopied - no go.
- Found a stock ROM for the SC-03D - Flashed with Odin.
Here's where I am now:
- Still only voice and text / No internet (on US SIM)
- Stock ROM (Rooted)
- CWR won't load custom ROMs
- Weird thing: After all of the cache clearing, flashing, and re-flashing; upon connecting to the voice network with the US SIM, the phone displays a message with my JAPANESE phone number, "Voicemail number". upon clicking that message, it displays a prompt to call my japanese number.
-- My SIM was in the phone for a bit while in the States, but it has since been cache cleared and reflashed SEVERAL different times.
I'm told that unlocked phones may not have this connectivity, but I don't see why it can't be overcome.
Questions:
- Can an Unlocked Docomo SC-03D get internet service in the US? Has anyone tried?
- Why aren't the ROMs taking? Is the CWR not working right because I selected the T-Mobile version of the CWR? Other versions simply didn't work.
- Where can I find a stock Kernel for this phone OMKK3?
- What method can I use to extract the stock kernel so I can play around with other kernels? (I know a LOT of the issues people are having with the haptic buttons and no GPS simply has to do with them using the wrong kernel)
Thanks all. /walloftext

Maybe the radio is. My understanding of this phone is that it's a mutt. It has the same chipset as the T989, but (as you have hinted) may have the same radio of the Skyrocket. It looks like neither!
You may have just connected the dots for me - when I was purchasing the prepaid (T-Mobile) I was told that the AT&T Network is dissimilar from the T-Mobile one... Maybe the radio is simply not compatible with T-Mobile's data network, regardless of the firmware.
I'll purchase an AT&T prepaid today, activate it, then put the SIM in my SC-03D. If it has data, I'll know this is correct.
...It just bugs me that I DID get Edge connectivity with the custom Darkside ROM...
[Solved]
I neglected to configure APN settings for the device... It's always something simple... Oh well.
It only picks up Edge, unfortunately. I was told to expect that. I wonder if there's a workaround...

there is the high risk option of flashin the American radios
just make sure you make a dump, of your original radio before doing that, so that you can reverse it when you go back to Japan

I tried two different T-Mobile Radios, and one Telus. Unfortunately, not even the voice / text worked on all 3.
I found a post that had those 3 radios - I think it was in this T-Mobile subforum, but I didn't see any radios in the other subforums (AT&T, etc..)
The SC-03D is like a mutt, and doesn't have all the components of any one Galaxy S II version. I'm sure the radio is not like that of the T-Mobile.
Does anyone know where I can find more radio firmware?
Did this ever get solved? I'm kind of in the reverse situation; I'm in Japan, and my radio currently works fine. But the Docomo ROM is hideous, with loads of bloatware, and they're very slow at getting firmware out.
I tried installing the SkyRocket's AOKP JB ROM, which works just fine, apart from mobile internet and the touch buttons (although you can just have on-screen buttons in the AOKP ROM, so while annoying, it isn't the end of the world).
Does anyone know of a way of backing up the radio settings alone, installing a ROM. then restoring the radio settings? Maybe it's like someone said above, and I need a ROM compatible with the stock kernel? Any help would be massively appreciated - I'm feeling like I've wasted hundreds of dollars on a phone and contract that can't do anything close to what I want it to.
Confirmed root sc03d
Can confirm the method posted works for sc03d as of October 2013 on the latest Docomo official rom.

[Q] Disable Tether Manager

Hello, I just signed up to the forum today. However, I've thoroughly searched this forum and Google'd trying to find useful information. I've gotten the jest of what needs to be done but no clear step by step details.
First, if I've rooted my GalaxySiii, am using stock ROM, with WiFi-tether app and it's working to tether to laptap. Do I "still" need to remove the TMO tether manager if I plan on using a VPN (Virtual Private Network)? In plain English, can TMO tell I'm tethering my data connection if I'm using a VPN?
Second, I've downloaded Titanium Backup * root (free version), (I KNOW I NEED THE PAID TO FREEZE) but was trying to ensure I could locate (see) the Tether Manager before I pay $7 for an app I don't need. I've never been able to locate TMO tether manager or anything with the word tether for the matter within Titanium or Root Explorer. The only TMO apps I see in Titanium (only 3 tabs within Titanium (Overview / Backup/Restore / Schedules), I'm using the Backup/Restore tab is (CallerTunes 3.0, MobileLife Contacts 3.8.01, T-Mobile My Account 2.1.1348, T-Mobile Name ID 1.9.6, T-Mobile TV 5.0.0.73-178477, and Visual Voicemail 2.0.28).
While in Root Explore app, I have no idea what I'm looking at. I would love to delete bloatware and such but am afraid of deleting the wrong thing. Okay, so I given you the details now here is the second question. I need someone to explain to me and I'm sure many others in plain English, with all the steps, how to disable or delete/uninstall the TMO tether manager either in Titanium or Root Explorer because there is no such app (Titanium) or APK in (Root Explorer) that just saying Tether Manager? Is it be hidden or under a different name?
I'm sorry for the extensive info, but I did watch the NOOB video when I registered and it said to be as thorough as possible without being too winded. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance with my problem! )

It's been a while since I've had the stock ROM and I'm working off of memory here so bear with me.
I'm assuming when you say you're using a WiFi-tether app you mean a third party one and not the one that came with the phone. If that's the case if the Tether app you downloaded specifically meant for root? I don't know about any of the other Tether apps out there, but WiFi Tether for Root works for some on the stock ROM. As for disabling Tether Manager try going to the default Task Manager by hitting the left softkey>Manage Apps>All and see if there's any Tether Manager or Samsung Tether apps and disable from there.
As long as you're tethering through the app I recommended though, Samsung shouldn't be able to tell if you're tethering your data plan. Sorry I don't have more information regarding running a rooted stock ROM, but from what I understand WiFi Tether for Root works on any AOSP based ROM and I can tell you that it works on CM10 for sure.
Also, can we please choose a less painful color for my eyes... like say black. Or charcoal. Or grey. Or even carbon fiber.
I feel like you're asking 12 different questions. Most of which have been covered on the forums. It's good to be thorough but please please please get your first questioned answered before asking 3 more.
Which is most important?
Sorry, this was a duplicate post that I've deleted!

@ OP - I know what you're asking about, because that's how it worked on the GSII
However, the app we used to freeze to get away with it (tethering manager) is not present in any recognizable form as far as I can tell on the GSIII
Plus they now use alternate methods to detect tethering, such as the browser you are using, etc
All in all, just pay the $15 bucks a month or use one of the methods outlined in several threads in this forum. Although I believe they only work if used a specific way, with specific browsers, etc
Hope that answers your question
Ok, much easier to read your post now. The method that I'm currently using requires a custom ROM. It's been shown to work for others as well. First you need to upgrade your ROM to Cyanogenmod10. There's an entire thread on that in the Original Android Development section.
The app I use is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ
I'm not sure if that's the same one you currently have or not, but I know for a fact that the above app works.
Once you install the custom ROM you no longer need to worry about disabling the Tether Manager as it won't even be installed.
If you want to stick with a stock ROM there are workarounds, but like the user above me posted you'll have to dig around the forums. I had the stock ROM for about 2 hours before abandoning it.
Okay, I will upgrade my ROM. The link to the app you've given me is the app I'm currently using. I know that they will still be able to see that I'm tethering even if I upgrade my ROM; however they wont be able to stop it. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if using a VPN is a workaround for their snooping?

[Q] Removed Tethering Provision....oops?

Hello.
First of all, I am new here. I have done a fair amount of reading over the last few days, and I love the site. I finally ditched the "slackberry" in favor of an att GNII. With the help of an xda post, I managed to root it and install TB. Silly me decided to remove to Tethering Provision file reading (incorrectly) that doing so would allow me to enable wi-fi hotspot....
well... it doesnt. So now tethering is pretty much broke all together. Any advice?

Unfortunately, all I know for sure is that Titanium Backup called it ThetherProvision. I was under the impression i had to remove it to enable wifi hotspot on my rooted phone
I was able to install foxfi and now I can tether. It would be nice if I could use the stock tether option. I guess ill wait to see if someone figures that out. Should i be concerned that I blew away this ThetherProvision?
Just a quick note. I do not pay for a tethering option on my subscription. I assume that was understood. But, like i said, I am new here.
Well maybe some one could post a copy of theres, I would but it seems that telus doesnt have that file on my phone, on another note everytime you are going to delete something, back it up first
When it comes to android modding the best thing you can do is back everything up

If you removed that tethering provision apk and tethering works I would leave it removed in case it's part of AT&T detection of you using tethering without their additional fee.

I don't think you will use the stock teather if you are not on a plan anyway.
For me that would mean I lose my Unlimited data (aka trottle) and pay an additional $15/mo.

4G LTE after rooting

Hello
I have an international version of the HTC one m8, specifically the ones in Asia. Before rooting and/or applying a custom rom, I used to have 4G capabilities but now the phone just refuses to connect to the 4G network. My 3G works fine with normal speeds as per before, I have applied a custon rom and a kernel and I am s-off so I couldn't have tempered with the radio. Please help as this is affecting me and wasting the capabilities of such an amazing phone.
thanks in advance

I think you mean you are s-on. If you were s-off, that would mean you can tamper with the radio partition.
In any case, flashing a ROM or kernel won't "typically" affect LTE. But certain ROMs don't play well with some networks as reported by some folks (Euro ROMs + US AT&T network is the one example I can think of).
But before we get needlessly complex, did you check your APN?

oops sorry yes I meant s-on. I have checked my apn, matched it with online the website of my carrier. I am currently in Singapore and I am running ARHD for my phone now. The rom was flashed was the international version that I got from the xda thread. Other than the 4G problem, the phone works fine and as mentioned my 3G still works fine.

You might flash another ROM to see if it has any effect on LTE. I'm also guessing that returning to the stock ROM for your version will also get LTE back.

I don't actually now exactly what is causing you to have lost LTE, so therefore its impossible to know specifically what to edit or change.

1) If you flash a ROM of the same "base" (i.e. Lollipop Sense) you might be able to get away with a "dirty flash" meaning you keep user data, and just wipe cache and Dalvik before you flash. But if you run into some random issues, you may need to wipe user data.
2) You can make a nandroid in TWRP of your current setup. Than if you try a new ROM and it doesn't help the LTE issue, you can just restore the nandroid and revert to where you are now, with all the same user data.
3) To migrate data between ROMs, I just use Titanium Backup myself (with the Pro key to enable batch functions). Everyone's setup is different. But for me, I keep my contacts and email on Gmail. Than I just backup my apps, app data, and text messages on Titanium. So when moving to a new ROM (after wiping user data) I batch restore apps with Titanium, and just manually setup the home screens and Settings. Takes me maybe 20-30 minutes tops. May take folks longer if they have a lot of customized settings (lots of WiFi networks, Bluetooth devices, etc.) but I think even some of those things can be backed up by various methods, as well.
Wiping user data is basically just a necessary evil if you want to flash ROMs with any degree of frequency, IMO. Its nice when you can dirty flash, but I never outright count on it.
