I'm coming from a rooted port of Android for the Sprint Touch (Vogue) (Thanks DZO, Myn, and company!!!) and WOW EVO is amazing.
Anyways I have a few questions I need help with getting started I've been reading a lot but I'm still overwhelmed with the wealth of info:
#1. I updated the OTA - does this mean I can't root yet until the new OTA is rooted?
#2. I would like to go to a new rom without all the junk. I don't use sense, or any of that other fancy stuff running in the background. Is there a rom you would recommend?
#3. In the past, I had a rooted device where I could modify the androidinstall.tar and remove .apk's I didn't want. Is this possible with the current situation on EVO?
#4. With all these roms, do you generally clean wipe everything each time? or do settings / apps / configs remain?

I can try to answer your questions.
1. Unless something has come out recently off you are stock and did the update no way to root yet.
2. I just use stock ROM and remove what I don't use.
3. I personally use "root explorer" once you are root you can either unlock nand and use out to remove bloatware or you can adb and remove with your computer.
4. I'm not to sure about those commands, I haven't ever used those.
Look at the sticky in any forum and go to the ROM and Guide link and everything you need to know its there. Keep a close lookout I'm sure somebody will figure out how to root the update soon.

Yeah I love root explorer, that's how I used to change things on my old phone. I have it installed but I guess I just have to wait for them to root the update. Maybe I shouldn't have updated
Oh well, knowing XDA they will probably root it by the time I'm finished typing this post. I'll keep reading those stickies... thanks for the answer though!

Crap one question I forgot - without being rooted - is there anyway I can do the wireless tethering besides the standard Sprint program?
There is a program on the market called easytether. One is the lite version, which is free. The full version is 10 bucks

yeah but it doesnt work as a router which is what I want. I decided to just use the sprint version for 29 a month
So I've come to notice that I can't even change a widget background to transparent without rooting (right?) so I want to root my phone. I reflashed my GN to have yakju which wiped all the data and it was a pain to get everything back as it was before. Was able to save my messages, which I'm very thankful for as it took ages to get them out of my old Nokia (series 40) to my GN. Since I've downloaded apps from "third party providers" that usually cost money but were on a special sale (GetJar) and I'd also lose these apps.
It seems that there are a lot of ways to backup data if you have root access, but if you don't your out of luck. Shame on me for not rooting the minute I got the phone, but I believed when people told me that Android was open (BAZINGA). So before I lose ~20 bucks worth of apps I want to be sure there really is no way for me to save them somewhere somehow.
Could someone also point me to a topic of sorts where there are some facts listed about rooting? I know it's somewhere here, but I haven't found it (to be frank this question is probably also in here somewhere, but couldn't find it either). I guess I can't have a rooted phone with the default ROM? Right? So if I root I won't get updates from Google?

For data back up after rooting Titanium Backup is a must have. I bought the pro version.
From my understanding you will still get OTA updates from Google if the finger print = google/yakju/maguro:4.0.2/ICL53.... for example.
If the fingerpring contains samsung anywhere in there then your upade will come from sammy not google
I have TB installed, but as said I'm not rooted yet so it's useless. My device is currently marked as Google. So what I have to do is just choose a ROM that has that fingerprint? Okay.

Rooting will NOT wipe your data or apps. However, if you re-locked your bootloader, then you are out of luck, as unlocking the bootloader causes a full wipe. You should always leave your bootloader unlocked -- it saves a lot of hassle... like what you are now experiencing.
There is no good way to backup without root.

Another noob question, what's the difference between rooting and unlocking the bootloader? Is the latter for installing things like ClockWorkMod Recovery?

Rooting simply gives you 'root' access, which is the Linux equivalent of administrator on Windows. Unlocking the bootloader lets you flash packages signed by sources other than official, or unsigned as well.

If you're talking about rooting not wiping your phone, then yes. However, unlocking will wipe your phone, thus the recommendation to do it before you've d/led or configured anything. I unlocked right after I did the initial out-of-box setup, had to go through again after the unlock wiped the phone, and then rooted it yesterday. I used this method to root (there's a similar rundown in the GN LTE forum) and none of my apps or tweaks had been removed or changed. But you should always make backups just in case, which the first link helps you with.
Yeah. So the answer is there is no way to save your your data. Luckily a lot of the stuff is synced with Google. Your messages you can save with SMS backup. I unlocked, rooted and went ahead and flashed a new ROM (hopefully that is the right terminology: you flash ROMs, right?). In between the new ROM and rooting I backed up with Titanium Backup.
This one let's you sync with Facebook which is awesome. Now if only FB would be added as an IM service as well. It's probably the only instant messaging service in use around here; kind of a bummer it isn't included. Does anyone know if someone is intending to add this functionality in a custom ROM etc? (sorry, just feels wrong to strat a new topic for this question.)
I have my music widget now with a transparent background.
You won't lose the paid apps even if you wipe/unistall them. They will appear as purchased for you in the android market always. You just need to reinstall them.

App manager on es file explorer makes back ups of .apk files, pretty sure you don't need root, but I could be mistaken, its a free app so its not like you have anything to lose. If it does work, after backing up your apps you can then move the files to your pc with a usb cable, or transfer the files to a cloud storage like dropbox for extra security.

I think that only applies to apps purchased/downloaded through Android market.
I can't remember but i read that with ics, using adb without unlocking or rooting you can back up your data. I will try and find the link, try the dev forum.

Actually, that isn't entirely true. You can still back-up what you can see on the Nexus when you connect it to your computer.

That is true, I was going to say to always backup your "sd card" by copying it over to your computer when locking/unlocking as it will be wiped for whatever reason.

I'm on an R800x, which doesn't have sim card anything, so I'll just answer the questions I know.
1. Unlocking the bootloader allows you to install 3rd party software that overwrites the stuff that is part of the boot process. This pretty much refers to the kernel, for the Play. Certain roms, such as MIUI and CM7 require you to use a kernel different from stock, and since you need a different kernel, you must have an unlocked bootloader. As far as I know, that's the only real benefit for an unlocked bootloader, from a user standpoint.
4. There are many things that custom roms offer, as opposed to the stock your phone came with. This can range from a new UI, new apps, tweaks to system files, etc. Generally speaking, developers strive to make their custom roms operate better than stock. For more information on this point, I would suggest you check out some of the custom rom threads, just to see what they've changed from the stock rom.
5. You will need root, but you will need something with which to remove the apps. The best app to use, in my opinion, is Titanium Backup. Not only will it allow you to remove system apps, but it will also back up those and user apps, all for free. Unless you buy the pro key, that is.
6. As far as specific tips for the Play, I would recommend rooting so that you can disable the auto brightness. While auto brightness is desirable in most phones, the Xperia Play (And other Xperia devices, I think) are almost constantly shifting the brightness, to where a slight tilt of the hand can make the screen dim or brighten. I'm sure that can't be good on the battery. Generally speaking, though, apps such as Juice Defender and Battery Defender have profiles or just general settings to adjust data flow and many other options that can significantly increase battery life.

No, but you can check if you can unlock following the instruction on SE's site:
1. First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
2. In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.
Note that unlocking void your warranty.

Unless you're really tight on space (which shouldn't normally happen if you've done the adb setinstalllocation trick and moving apps to sdcard), i would suggest freezing the apps instead of removing them especially if you're sticking with stock. This would make it a lot easier to move to the next official OS upgrade instead of a mad scramble to find the stock apps and reinstall them. The pro version of Titanium backup and SystemCleanup has the freeze function. I've freezed a lot of crap on my phone and it makes a world of difference wrt. boot time and general performance.
Unlock boot loader is very good allows you to flash custom kernel and overclock

I rooted my old ZTE blade but this phone is just... different. I mean it's probably gonna Get ICS anyways and if I were to root I'd probably need a very simple guide.

Yes, you can install Clockworkmod recovery from the market, there is an auto installer for xperia. That can be done without unlocking the bootloader but you must be rooted.

I believe a nandroid backup on CWM would do the trick, but I am not sure. I simply made backups of everything I uninstalled so I could revert it.

Yes. kernel flashing on locked bootloaders brick your phone. and AFAIK, no custom rom except those based on stock have touchpad support.

If you keep it stock, yes, 2.3.4. There is FreeXperia rom that is 2.3.7 as well.
On the forum you will find links to ICS based roms, SE leaked and AOSP. Both are WIP, I believe.
I've read somewhere that Sony will release ICS for the xperia 2011 line around April.
pretty sure flashing kernels on locked bootloaders doesn't BRICK your phone. It won't allow the kernel to be flashed as you can't use Fastboot only flashmode (official signed Roms only )

Doesn't brick as in "turns your phone into a very expensive paper weight", but your phone will not boot anymore and you will have to flash a stock rom with flashtool to recover.
I have made the transition from IOS to Andriod I was a wiz with the Iphone, Jailbreaking and so on... But now I have the Samsung s3 Galaxy and I want to find out whats the main tricks and tips .... For instance what is Rooting? And what software would I need for this.. And what is the latest software? Can I please have someone tell me all the steps I need to do to pimp up and jailbreak this phone.

u can root using odin v1.5, download pda files according to ur firmware on ur mobile on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331253 and flash it in the download mode, and u r done!!

There's plenty of step by step noob guides here, just search for your device and I'm sure you'll find a great guide with a youtube video to make it all easy as pie.

Ok I dont want to stuff my phone, how do I know what firmware it is I goto the About section and nothing says Firmware all I see is

Nothing on pc just get a file manager of play store then in phone browser Google universal androot and dl the .apk file open it in file manager then dl ROM maneger off the play store then install recovery dl a zip open recovery then flash it custom ROM

Cons all I can think of is that you probably lose your warranty but there are ways to fool your OEM technician that your phone was never rooted. And you run the ever diminishing risk of bricking your phone if something goes wrong. (chances are close to nill these days)

flashing is like completely changing your OS. like from froyo to gingerbread. while rooting is gaining extra access into your handheld, like unlocking administration on your PC.

Yes I definatley Love this phone, Im in love.. so android is my new baby I now know what rooting and flashing is.. Next step is what should I do before I decide to choose a Rom ... Should I flash it back to stock? That is always better then the Service provider software correct? But there is one thing that I want ... it is called the NAVIGON its a navigation program... hmm what should I do? And how do I find the stock files for my phone to flash and the latest ones at that.

Ok I have rooted to the cf 6.4 version and I have updated the superSU aka SuperUSER and now what.. With Iphone There used to be a thing called Installeus and Cydia and its like the Black Market Everything on there is free is there an equivalent on Android?
No Cydia equivalent in Android. There's many different app stores for Android, just no one central. After all you can install third party software in Android without root, you just un-click option in the menu. Root gives you freedom and access to apps that need root to work.

You must not forget I am new to this stuff so when you say "just un-click option in the menu" I dont have a clue what you are talking about which menu and what option. And what does it do? A small step by step would be great.
And Could you give me just a few app store links and if there's a specialty link that specializes in Rooted appz a link would be great sorry but like I said I am just learning and so far all these comments are helping me with the lingo and so on...
You just go into Settings --> Applications --> click Unknown sources in order to allow instalation of non-Market apps. I know that you are new but it does not have anything to do with root as you can do it as well on unrooted phone and believe me I am not a user manual
As for the sources for apps, just use the Market as well as specific threads in this forum in your phone's section from where you can download an app, transfer it to the SD card in your phone and install directly from the file. For that you need to click the option I mentioned above as without it you can only install from the Market. That's one thing.

thanks I have figured it all out before you even wrote that hehe thanks anyways.. i found that 4shared is great for getting free appz and games...
My current Xperia Play (r800x, rooted, Gingerbread 2.3.4, Verizon) of 3 years is starting to fail/shutdown when I open the slider - I have to restart the phone to get it running again - it works fine as long as I don't open the slider which fails randomly). I bought another Xperia Play online (r800x, rooted, Gingerbread, 2.3.3) to replace the existing one.
There has to be a way for me to copy the entire rom contents from the existing phone to the new one since the phones are exactly the same - correct? If so, how would I do this? (I currently have ROM Toolkit and Titanium Backup paid versions with installed key on both phones). The replacement phone works fine. It may be obvious to you how to do this but your help would be VERY much appreciated since I've never done this before. ROM Toolkit doesn't make it obvious if there's a way to do that. I've also searched the forums a bit and no luck so far unless I missed something. Thanks for your time!

As your doing a straight copy from R800x to R800x, best thing is to make a nandroid backup from Clockwork Mod then take out the memory card dferom your old PLAY and put it in the new phone. Boot into recovery and restore the nandroid. BAM.... done

I know for sure the phone is rooted, which I did myself. It has Superuser access, I was able to remove Verizon bloatware, etc... I downloaded/paid for ROM Manager Premium v5.5.3.2 and I already had the paid version of ROM ToolBox Pro. I have tried to create a backup of my existing rom on both apps and no luck. It restarts the phone but it comes back up just like a regular reboot. ROM Manager didn't create the folder it designated for the backup.
There is no mention to do so but am I supposed to unlock the bootloader before trrying to backup my rom? When I goto Sony's page about unlocking the bootloader(http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/instructions) it walks me through the first steps to check if the bootloader is locked or not - it tells me this:
"First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your device by checking the service menu. In your device, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu. If you have a tablet, click here to learn how access the service menu.
In your device, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked." - well, I enter the code, goto Service Info, Configuration, and that's it - I can't get to "Rooting Status". The page shows the MEID #, MEID Software version, Available Speech Codecs, and Working Bands.That's it - and I get the same result on the other phone I have.
So if I don't need to worry about unlocking the bootloader(because it wasn't mentioned in several how to guides online like this one: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...nandroid-backup-and-clockworkmod-rom-manager/ , then how come I'm not able to backup my existing rom using either apps before I attempt to copy over the rom from my other phone? *sigh*

Yes you need to have an unlocked bootloader. For the r800x I would recommend doomkernel. If you need more help there is a thread for it on the developement thread, I believe that tells you exactly how to do it.

I decided I don't want to go that far(messing with Kernel and Bootloader) since the phone is working great - I got all my games/apps installed with the 64gb MicroSDHC class 10 card, cleaned up all the dead files using SD Maid, deleted and restored the Dalvik Cache, cleaned out ../system/app/ folder of unneeded apks, and I'm running at optimum now(no low disk space icon showing which is a nag for this phone). This phone is "pimped out" to the max and I've decided to just use Mybackup Pro to save everything out and I'm going to make a full copy of the sd card in the next couple days so I don't lose anything again. I'm concerned that if I tinker with bootloader/kernel that something will go wrong. I have no problem rooting or doing extensive fiddling for optimal performance however. :cyclops:
Internal has 43MB free, 342MB used.
SD card has 24GB free, 35GB used.

Have you tried using x-Parts? I got recovery through this way, and it doesn't require an Unlocked Bootloader, you just have to be rooted.
However, I'm unsure as to whether it would still work on yours, as yours is an R800x and mine is a R800i.

Thanks, I will check it out - from the user comments in Google Play it appears that it does work on r800x's - to access installed recovery it was noted that the update says to push any button on reboot but users found that the volume down button was the only button that works(maybe this was fixed in an update?). It sure looks like the r800x is more of a pain to toy with than the r800i and other gsm phones. I love Verizon networks but I don't care for their extra headaches using cdma.
X-tools uses a portion of your system folder to store the recovery. So if you install x-parts/tools and flash a new rom you will lose the recovery an will have to re-install the software.
