Dear all,
Is anyone else experiencing the following problem?
When the phone goes to sleep mode during the night hours it wont receive any messages for whatsapp etc. It seems that it turns off the 3g connection when you turn the screen off during the night hours.
Does anyone know a possible fix for this?
I have gone through all the settings and could not find anything about this.
Cheers.
I recently got this on my Desire Z too, and I have not changed any settings on that. Then I noticed it's happening on my One X too..
no 3g late night
Hi there, i have a motorola photon. in the settings menu you can go to what is called battery and data manager. then tap on battery mode. it's default is set to nighttime saver, which will kill your syncing after 15 minutes of inactivity in the hours between 10pm and 5am. i set mine to performance mode. this will sync all of the time and i don't really care if it takes up battery since i am awake and ready to pop in a new battery off my kick a$$ battery dock wall charger!! hope this helps....

I think it's got something to do with what HTC said about "the phone learning" when you check things like mails ect.. so after it has learned that you do not check mail (for instance) during the night it disengages activies... or not
@mykeyvee, there are no such options in the stock rom on this phone.
Anyone have any other ideas?, i want everything to be synced 24 hours a day.

I don't think it's anything to do with settings. My Desire Z is on 2.3.7 and only recently have I got this bug.
My One X is stock unrooted. No settings for power saving.
Accounts and sync>sync schedule>smart sync
Is this what is effecting you

This. I woke up and my 3G wasn't even on. I had to disable and enable data again to get connected.
Same problem here. Whenever my phone is in standby mode for a longer period of time (as far as I've seen it doesn't matter whether it's during the night or day), the data connection (3g) is disconnected.
On my previous phone, a desire Z, there was a setting 'data always on' which addressed this issue. This setting however seems to be missing on all android 4 phones.
**edit:
Contacted Dutch HTC support; they claim it's a feature. Hope they restore the setting in the future..
I have noticed this too this morning.
I woke this morning and went into the battery settings and you can see the graph that all data was shut off over night.
How do we fix this.
Piss. Wondered why it used virtually no battery overnight...

Exactly same here...just as u switch on the screen....it connects to wifi or 3g instantly...

I have received email overnight though....

I was thinking that maybe it was just the 3g/wifi connection which was going into a sleep mode after a long period of inactivity.
I've tried increasing my mail sync at night to once in 30 minutes to prevent the 3g connection from going to sleep and disconnecting. (had it at once in 4 hours)
Now when i wake up and turn the screen on, the 3g icon is already there, and my mail has been synced last in the previous 30 minutes.
Fixed it?
Same issue here, weird thing is that I can't seem to tie it down to either a specific battery-percentage nor a specific time of the day. It's really annoying though, as I would like my device to be connected 24/7. Tried setting a mail-account for 15 min update, so will see how much wifi/3g has been on tomorrow.
Edit: Definitely not a battery issue, but rather a time issue. Battery is at 80% (used the phone little today) and 3G/wifi has been disconnected for the past 2 hours even when mail is set to check every 15 min. I can see that for many people it's not important at night, but I wish we at least had the option to turn it off :/
Possible Fix
Download this app.. Minimaltext
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.devmil.minimaltext&feature=search_result
Create a widget 1x1, under the tap behavior, select start another activity, then select an activity. Scroll now to settings, expand it, choose power saving setting..
Leave the rest default then press okay.
Click the widget and you will find some settings, including put data connection to sleep when screen is off. I haven't tried it. Hope this helps.
Not a bug!
This is not a bug, but a feature : scheduled standby mode
If on Sense 4.x, settings are similar to Sense 3.5, you should go into settings > power then scroll to standby mode. Default setting is auto, which means that the phone learns your sleeping phases and disable every wirless connections during this time when your screen is off, and enable it again automatically when you wake up (even if your screen is still off).
You can disable this feature, or (my favorite option) manually set the duration when you allow your phone to enter and exit deep standby mode.
(For me it's a great feature, as I really dislike having my phone producing airwaves close by my head when I'm sleeping. Before I went to Sense 3.5 on my DHD, I didn't have this option and had to enable plane mode before sleeping ant enter my PIN code every morning to exit plane mode, which was less convenient).
If you want to disable this, download smartsync disabler from the play store. Im pretty sure there is a thread on xda too with an app available to download.
...Or read my previous post... Market's bloatware is not needed, setting for this should be in power settings, as on Sense 3.5.
hey,

Same issu here... I think that all custom roms has this problem... But I was told that could be a recovery problem(because it also wakes up when charging) so I'm using AOKP(v1.2 AWESOME battery life now) with TWRP recovery (I was using CWM)... Tonight I'm gonna check if it still waking up itself.
The recovery has little to do with the running ROM. Clockworkmod switches on the phone when nearly charged.
The phone waling and screen.coming on is much more likely to be a rogue app.

try a fresh install performing full wipe, clearing cache and dalvik cache and also use fastboot erase cache command before flashing boot img
i am also on viper 2.01 and don't have any such problems
There is no way...
I just tried everything..
With any custom rom and custom recovery, the phone wake up itself when charging off...
Only with the stock rom and oficial recovery it works Ok. Hope they find a solution..
I noticed there is some kind of pattern, the screen all of a sudden starts to turn itself on and off slowly and then faster and then it reaches a point where it stays on for about 10 seconds and then goes back off for a while.. it's very strange !! i've been using viperX for a long time and this never happened... at first i thought it was the productivity lockscreen notifying me of new emails or smth but that wasnt it... i only have google apps, xda app, facebook and chrome.. could it be one of these?? maybe its an app that uses internet because i noticed it happens much less or sometimes doesnt happen at all when i turn wifi off
task killer or smart stay ex
Had happened to me last evening. Random auto wakeup, first the touch buttons lightup and then
the screen. Then it goes to sleep on its own and then wakeup again. At first I thought it was related
to motion sensor because it always managed to coincide when I started typing in my laptop. But later
I noticed it wasn't the case as I was away from the table when it reached a very fast frequency
similar to notification LED,flashing sleeping flashing sleeping.... then complete sleep.
Went in task manager in search of rouge app, found "HTC Hub","Google Search","Google Play"
and a few other were constantly being slaughtered by the "Android Task Killer Free".
Exited the "Android Task Manager Free" and the auto wakeup has completely disappeared since then.
I also closed smart stay EX, which might have been the culprit as well since I have got dust in my front
camera and those might be recognized as faces or eyes?
I suggest you check for stray apps or task killers.
Make sure that none of the apps(background) crashing or being killed.
I believe custom roms try to enhance the performance by limiting the minimum
memory balance before which background inactive apps are killed by android.
Might be the cause but not quite sure.
So thats that, worth a try. Go to [Apps-->Running] and check if some app is disappearing and reappearing
on its own. Force stop it. Reboot the phone. Avoid any memory tweaking and task killer,
android is smart enough to know when to kill and when to keep apps.
Note: I am running a stock 4.0.3(1.29), no unlock, rooting etc...
Good luck

That worked !! but in a different way, i have no task killers and the ROM did not kill apps before because it didnt use to happen until recently, but i tried to clean up my phone and uninstalled some apps and it stopped since then, problem is i uninstalled them all at once so i dont know which app exactly was the cause but sure it was one of 'em.. maybe it got corrupted and started crashing in the background or something because i didnt install any apps recently... this didnt happen not even once since i cleaned up those apps.. thanx a lot for helping
So the root cause could be thee Apps that has permissions to wack/prevent (android.permission.WAKE_LOCK) your devices from sleeping..
I experienced it occasionally while 'smart stay EX' was on beta time..

I recommend installing "Wakelock detector" which shows statistics of WAKE_LOCK usage !!
In Marshmallow we had the enable LED option under Settings -> Screen, on Nougat this option is not there anymore, Light Flow with Normal/Direct/ROOT mode doesn't work too..
Does anyone knows an easy way tô enable the LED?
Since Marshmallow I've been enabling Miracast with a simple line on build.prop, hopefully there is another for enabling the LED.
Thanks.

I noticed this on one of my apps when I set the phone down for a few hours like overnight, no light and no sound. I woke up this AM and seen no notification light and then as soon as i pressed the power button to wake up the screen the notification sound played. defiantly a bug, not sure if its with one specific app or across the board. I have yet to get a late night call, as far as I know.

It should not matter if it was charging or not, I'm trying to understand where you are going with this?
The app functions perfectly until the phone is left alone for several hours then it will never notify, no light, no sound, nothing until I hit the power button., then the sound played no light obviously.
I am tempted to start a thread on this shortly, but I need to see if other apps behave the same way.

I know there is that option, however I did not have to preform this in 6.0.1 for any app, so that's why I am wondering whats up and if that will make a difference or not. I do know that apps with GCS can automatically bypass this from what I read, but that has to be written into the app. I will continue to experiment with seeing what apps do it or do not do it without messing around with turning off optimization for any app like with 6.0.1 . Either this version of doze is overly aggressive or its a bug

From my understanding/experience, Doze is significantly more aggressive now than it was in 6. Which is great for battery life, but annoying when you're watching TV and expecting an email or some such.
The charging comment in my other post was due to the understanding that doze is disabled while charging; if you charge over night everything should come in normally, but if you just leave the phone down then it will not.

I thought that might be what you might be getting at .
If doze is more aggressive, i think it is overly aggressive to the point where sometime within an hour of setting your phone down it will only alert for calls/text messages, nothing else, then if the text come in early enough in the light the notification light will completely stop by the time you wake up. I am just not too happy about how overly aggressive this is as like you stated expecting someone to contact you in some way you are SOL. I don't think one should have to go through every single app to set it manually, that is pointless IMO
I have re flashed my system partition since the factory images came out a few hours ago so maybe(not) that could help but I am not optimistic.
Thanks for clearing that up

Doze does not completely kill the services. It just adds more and more delay to its syncing, so even if doze is working aggressively, the notifications should be delayed (like by some seconds or minutes), not completely disabled. The case you are stating doesn't seems normal. I don't know if the apps need to be updated.

So, at least in my case, I solved this issue with the notification light. I went into Settings --> System UI Tuner --> Other --> Power Notification Controls --> and turned them on. Then, Settings --> Notifications --> Touchdown (the app that was giving me problems) --> and changed the notification level from Auto to Level 4 (one down from the top).
Since then, the notification light works as expected.

I already tried disabling touch sounds and similar things.i know its not any of my music players cause it shows as a seperate lock.i dont have music playing the whole day and the battery drops like crazy for no reason. Any way to pinpoint this wakelock or a fix?
Are you rooted? Have you tried Amplify? I don't usually limit that wake lock but it's safe to limit per Amplify.
I found that wake kick and tried limiting and didn't seem to have an issue until the first time I used the S Pen. After the tone to initiate screen write, Amplify unexpectedly went back a step and became unresponsive; had to kill the Amplify and try again. I noticed the blocked wake count had increased by one when I came back in to make the scroll capture.
For some reason, I can't keep the stats reset but momentarily. I can see that the wake locks were reduced by nearly two thirds and wake time seems limited more than expected. It was very high unlimited but I can see a difference since limited.
If you're rooted, try it. Reply back if it seems buggy with limitation. I use a sound mod that includes V4A and Dolby Atmos. I didn't have audio problems; I get notifications in sleep mode. But the initial S Pen issue was unexpected. Hopefully just a one time thing.

I know this will be almost impossible to solve with suggestions, but some of my notifications don't come through until I unlock my phone. Most notably WhatsApp. I've turned off all battery optimisation options, removed it from the sleeping apps list, allowed background data and turned off data saver. Still have the same issue.
I have naptime installed so turned that off as well.
What's strange is that a few days ago all my notifications started coming through as normal for a few hours, and then stopped again.
I know the only way to solve this is probably a factory reset, but with loads of tweaks I've gotten it so my battery life is amazing. Leaving it overnight it drains around 3% and depending on how I use it I get around 8h of SOT with 50% battery left so I don't really want to factory reset.
What launcher are you using?
I feel your pain with factory resets.
There needs to be a backup settings to cloud so you can easily restore them after a reset or even a change of phone.
I understand your frustration with this issue, I experimented it as well when I started using my device, back then I did not fully knew about all the battery optimization settings, but, when trying to get all the notifications right, I stumbled upon an app named PNF-no root, which is meant to fix the push notifications from sms, email, whatsapp, etc, I tried so many things, that I honestly can not say if this PNF solved the issue, but in the end my notifications became normal, so, I kept using it, you can give it a try, that is, before you reset your phone, it might help
Do you at least move your phone? Because a lot of apps, to bypass the system's optimisation that put apps to sleep, is that their wake up workaround is gyroscopic based.
That's why WhatsApp and such use a lot the sensor while it has nothing to do about in the first place.
If a battery monitor works for you, you can check that for WhatsApp.

I've just installed a push notification tester app and my phone goes into doze immediately once I lock my phone and the screen turns off it seems.
If I request a notification, it comes through with the phone unlocked but if I set a delay of a few seconds and lock the phone before it comes through, nothing will happen until I wake my screen up.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
I worked out what the problem was!
I have a VPN that is set to disconnect when my screen turns off to save battery. At the same time I enabled the Android setting that blocks all connections without VPN. Of course when the screen turns off and the VPN disconnects, my phone was blocking all outside connections, hence me not getting any notifications.
Well, I am glad you figured it out
