I have the stock Samsung Galaxy Nexus. AT&T Store put in a new Sim card. I kept my grandfathered data plan. I used Speedtest to check download speeds to confirm my observations.
Using wireless at home, I am getting about 11Mbps download speeds.
With cell phone connection at work or on the road or at the A&T Store - I am getting about 7kbps download speeds.
I went to the AT&T Store. They say there is nothing wrong with my data plan or AT&T linking. The APNs are right. I am on the high speed (HSPA+) network.
I am think that the wireless radio is different from the cell phone radio. If so, then the wireless radio is working right, and maybe the cell phone radio is not? Does this make sense? Is anyone else had this problem and found a solution?

Unless your wireless internet in your house is from a tethered/hotspot device or some sort of "mifi" (does AT&T have these yet?), it will certainly be faster than your cellular connection. That is a function of the backhaul behind your internet connection at home versus the backhaul to the towers your phone is connecting to outside of your home. And even with those towers, each one may have a different load and different server access, and so speed will vary between towers, or even the same tower throughout the day. The wifi radio and cellular radio are separate in the phone, and the difference in speed you are seeing is a difference in the signal delivered to the phone, not the phone's ability to receive signals.
I live in Shaker and i'm getting 5mb/1.5 most of the time. When i head downtown my speeds drop by 2/3.
I'm using the suggested APN settings from this forum.

Maybe it's defective. Try comparing it to AT&T's Galaxy S II (not the skyrocket!), or the Atrix, or any other HSPA+ Android (should have similar kernel when stock) device in the same location (the iPhone probably routs more power to its antennae since it has a battery-life surplus due to a smaller screen and lack of true multi-tasking/background processing).
My speeds have been dead on with what my Atrix got.
redo your apn's, make sure you're using auto or USA bands and try wcdma only temporarily. In the *#*#4636#*#* menu. The apns I think are under call settings.

Well I called AT&T Support. I finally got to 2nd level support. The tech their checked. He finally said there does not appear to be anything wrong with the phone. He said my unlimited data plan (grandfathered from 8 years ago) was the data plan for a feature phone. He asked what I had previous, and I told him an AT&T Tilt, which I ordered with the Media Max 200 Bundle.
He must have scratched his head, but said that the data plan I had did not support smartphones (huhh?), but he could upgrade my data plan to a smartphone plan for an extra $10. I asked about my grandfathered unlimited data, and he said the new smartphone plan would still be unlimited. (GREAT!) And no new contract!
He had me change the APN to the HSDPA one. Then he had me reboot the phone and check speedtest. My download speed was now up to an incredible 1.2Mbps, lots better than 7kbps. So I can live with that. I am not sure why i can't get the 3-5Mbps that others talk about, but this'll do.

The reps are doing something weird trust me (At&t rep here). They're either putting the wrong plan or your device may be defective. If you have unlimited you got to have a 30$ feature called SMT PERSONAL. If its the 2gb plan it should be 2gb for smart phones.

lol at incredible 1.2 mbps. Check your speed at 2am when its not peak and tell us. Either you're in congested area or something else is wrong.

I did get an $30 smartphone unlimited plan (old one was $20.). Is "SMT PERSONAL" some add on feature in addition to Smartphone Unlimited Plan?

THEY DO NOT EVEN HAVE IT !!! I just spoke to a cust servc rep and I'd originally called to ask if LTE connectivity would be rolled out in the 4.1.2 update and she said at this time Tmo doesnt even have LTE connectivity . There is a on-going merger between Tmo and metroPCS and metroPCS DOES have LTE or is in the process now of getting it and she said when that merger is complete T-mo will be in the process of merging LTE network into their service as well . She said late quarter 2013 we may see it but not for now.
Also she said there was no ETA on the 4.1.2 update So thats that .
Also Just another little heads up. I'm sure many of you know this already but I didn't . On the unlimited 4g plan offered with this device. It's not really unlimited 4g . It's unlimited internet. I saw on my device it said 2gb high speed data. And so I asked what the 2gb was seeing it was sold as unlimited 4 g . And well she explained once you hit 2gb of usage your internet is throttled to DIALUP speed =O . And offered a truly unlimited 4g plan for another 10/month . Just for all the people that may have been confused as I was what was up with the 2gb on the usage.

Uhmmm , I'm sorry sir / ma'am I have no idea what you said .
Lte should be rolling out by early next year. As far as slow updates blame sammy not tmobile. I will admit tmobiles data is spotty depending on where you go. Not as bad as sprints data and a heck of alot cheaper than verizon.
I thought everyone already knew this. How did you get the idea that lte would be here sooner. They are currently refarming which will help with certain things, but lte will not be out till 2013.
And since we are on the subject of not knowing. Tmobile will finally be getting the iphone in 2013. My wife and son currently use our old att iphones but get edge service. Part of the refarm is to support iphones. In Denver, they now get 3g. In 2013 there should be full support for the iphones.
I typically get great speeds and sometimes on par or better than verizon. As mentioned, not always as good as verizon but much cheaper. Also much better than sprint or att here in Colorado.
I think your English isn't too good. Your grammar is all over the place. Anyhow, I heard tmo is doing a deal with Verizon for lte as well... I guess no one really knows for sure until it actually comes out.

You are on the Unlimited - Plus Data plan (2gb high speed) and not on Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data plan (true unimited). I know this is confusing because they both show up in the Classic Unlimited - Unlimited Nationwide 4G. I made sure that I got onto the Unlimited - Plus Data plan within the Classic Unlimited - Unlimited Nationwide 4G which is truly unlimited. Of course only on the non-hotspot plans. Why do they make the wording so confusing?
Trying to make sure you are getting the right plan package can make you go crazy.

I knew that. Sometime in late spring or summer for LTE.
The new Android version will end up coming to us at that point. But this is something that the customer service would not know at this point in time. Samsung will add their fixes within that version at that time. So T-Mobile doesn't even have that yet. This is downside of using a non-Nexus device. We have to wait for the updates to go through the chains.
Sounds like someone bought a phone on a network without doing any basic research about that network or the plans they offer.
T-Mobile has previously said they would have LTE until next year, and it's pretty clear which plan is the only one that offers truly unlimited data.
Relax, switch plans or return the phone.
Verizon service is much better overall than T-Mobile in my experience in terms of coverage and building penetration. With a good signal I can get 20Mbs down with TMo on the Note 2, fair pings (latency), and about 2Mbs upload. On Verizon with a GS3 I've seen 30 down and 10 up on LTE with phenomenal pings. YMMV.

Nope, blame T-Mobile (and every other carrier) for the slow updates. I had an unlocked Note 2 before switching to T-Mobile and their Note 2.
My international version got regular (every few weeks) large OTAs just fine. The carrier is always to blame for delays as Samsung clearly pumps out regular OTAs to their non-carrier branded version all the time. These revisions would easily work on any branded device, minus any show stopping radio issues (which isn't the issue here). Samsung builds and releases enhancements quite frequently only to have the carriers sit on it and tinker with the software to their liking.
It's a well known fact that the carriers are the problem. They need to "test and certify" (lol) each software revision for their network..and of course apply their crapware boot screens and apps before releasing an OTA, hence the delay.

Congrats, you just posted two basic facts almost everyone with two seconds of research should have found out at a minimum before even considering moving to T-Mobile.
This is a stupid thread everyone knows the LTE situation, why in the world make a thread about what customer care says. Do you really think they get info thats up to date if you really need to know that bad, tmobile is testing LTE in select markets not with customers though. They have been working on refarming for customers while preparring for LTE. Also the data plan situation can be found on there website pay for unlimited data and get unlimited data otherwise it will be slowed while you will still have data it will be significantly slower. Do more research if this is news to you, updates with bloat and taking longer is nothing new in the US no matter what carrier you will always see some delay some wait more then others could be worse we could be waiting as long as vzw customers waited for ics on the thunderbolt. At least what software we have was usuable without major bugs that would have made an update necessary for our phone to function. Threads complaining are silly know what you buy first before you buy it.

Yes it can be confusing, but you're over complicating it.
For the record, just say all plans have "unlimited" data, meaning no data overages
The 2GB, 5GB, and 10GB give that much 4G data, then drop down to 2G speeds after.
"Truly unlimited" is unlimited 4G data, period, with no hot spot feature available.
The 5GB and 10GB (only) include the hotspot feature for free.
Whether classic or value is irrelevant.
Most people know this, but for anyone who was confused by your post.

Is it just me, or does anyone else not want Lte? I was on Verizon Lte before I switched to T-Mobile. T-Mobile is just as fast and my battery life is insane. I'm not sure if Lte will bring a noticeable increase in speed, but it will decrease our battery life.
The advantage to LTE will primarily be the low latency it should have. The second big advantage will hopefully be upload speeds similar to the download.
T-Mo's dual channel HSPA+ ramps up to some fairly competitive download speeds, which is great for streaming or large file transfers, but the latency is very high, which makes things like web surfing seem slower than on other networks. It takes noticeably longer for pages to start loading than on Verizon or AT&T. I have accounts on all three and frequently do side by side testing.

So after attempting to complete the Google Wallet fix for the galaxy s4 on T Mobile I ran into an issue where my 4G speeds and LTE speeds were much much lower than normal, somewhere in the range of 10 percent of normal. After attempting to remedy this every way possible short of flashing back to pure stock, including restoring modified rooted stock, I called customer care and was very surprised to find that the representative informed me that a mere 2mbit (2000kbps) classified as 4G LTE speeds to them.
Yeah you read that correctly; You will receive little to no support provided your connection is as fast as the average speed on Sprint's dilapidated and failing 3G network. I love T-Mobile for many reasons but this is just shocking. I did not spend 600 after taxes on a device capable of such insane speeds that it's faster than about 80 of American high speed Internet access, and 120 a month on a family plan with unlimited data, to be told that going backwards a decade in connection speed is "current generation".
I advise you call a rep today and confirm this, then email the ceo with me and let him know that this is not acceptable. Should he be serious about turning T-Mobile around, then he needs to cut the subscription to the typical carrier bs that helped me drive my friends away from sprint and att (crap service and speeds in our area) and into the welcoming service of T-Mobile.
Update: I had to ODIN pure stock to get my data speeds back.

Were you able to get Google Wallet working again with Root after using Odin to get your speeds back to normal? I'm about to get a GS4 on Friday and ideally want to have Google Wallet, Root, Tethering and LTE working. Just wondering what might not work and will... Thanks!
It may just be my device or rom but I find that the connection justs seems to hangup for lack of a better word. I have a meter showing my data usage in kb/s and if I hit the go button for a webpage it seems to do nothing and not use any data.

Take everything the rep says with a grain of salt, they often just say things because they aren't exactly sure. This, unfortunately causes confusion and people hearing different things. I get around 25-35 Mbps in my area and some people get even more.

T-Mobile isn't responsible for any modifications you make to your own device. You made the mistake of implementing the fix, so deal with the consequences. It's really that simple. :good:
That's why they use the term "up to." Not every single person will receive 20+ mbps. It also depends on the amount of towers, the distance of those towers and how many people are connected to them.

Also wish to comment that T-Mobile is VERY helpful when it comes to getting me better speeds. I was getting approx 100 kB/s download at my house which gets 4G HSPA and i called and complained. And they said that for 4G those speeds are horrible and sent a technition out to see what the issue was. The following day THEY called me back and explained there was some technical issues with the tower in my area. I think it had to do with the routing of the packets. But anyhow, they were extremely helpful with everything and now my speeds are back to 250 kB/s average And when i am at school, i get LTE my speeds there are NEVER below 1 MB/sand on good days sky rocket to 2 MB/s (advertised speeds) and sometimes even faster. I have already hit 3 MB/s it really depends on what towle said. Users on the network, what they are doing what you are doing etc etc.

I understand this entirely, however, I was less than a quarter mile from a tower sitting at home getting ~5000kbps, when normally I get 20000+. I also had slow speeds between 3 towers that I know carry T-Mo service and it never once got better until I ODIN flashed the stock ROM again.

You're measuring in Bytes, I'm measuring in bits, there's 8 bits to every Byte, and when you get 250kB x 8 = 2000kbps or 2mbit, the speed the T-Mo rep quoted me as what they expect you to get. When you were getting 2MB/sec, you're getting 16000kbps, which is normal for HSPA+ and decent T-Mo LTE.
Either way, I got it fixed, however their low-end expectations are very disheartening. I just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention that if you're getting more than 2000kbps (250kB/sec), don't bother calling T-Mo, they won't help you in regards to speeds, even if you're parked right under a tower that practically nobody else is on.
For the record, I consider this "decent LTE"
I just got LTE in my area and in getting 10 Mbps, about a mile away I was getting 20 Mbps.
Not too bad for a city that didn't have LTE when the i9500 1st dropped. I ditched the int'l version for the M919 and have no regrets !
I am having data problems as well.
I was getting awesome LTE speeds after the roll out here in the Dallas area. Went on vacation to the US Virgin islands in late June and upon returning, my speeds plunged to as low as 200 Mkbps where I was getting awesome speeds as high as 15000 mbps (as per speedtest) before this.
I'm not one to go only by test numbers or what the graph says. But I am experiencing real world page lags, drops, pages hanging up, no service notices and regularly seeing the Edge symbol.
As the OP says, I am getting lots of help from Tmo, even exchanging the S4 for a new one. (had to fight to get a surprise 150. fee rescinded after they claimed my pristine unit had a broken screen, but that is a different post)
But the problem has persisted. They have reset my account several times and are in the process of resetting it now. Said wait 72 hours and it will be fixed. Said should be fixed by weds. I remain skeptical, they said that once already....so much so that I bought a Experia Z Sat. (jury is still out on that)
The girl at tech support suggested I wait on replacing it but I've simply had enough of this.
I am convinced that it is on Tmos end.
And I can definitely confirm the gist of this post. Everyone I have talked to, literally a dozen people, have had the balls to tell me that Tmo considers 2000 a good LTE speed. I call BS.
I reall like my S4 a lot and don't like that the Z has a nonremovable battery. My wish is to keep the S4.
I've not had a chance to do much with this X, so can't yet compare performance.

Yeah you read that correctly; You will receive little to no support provided your connection is as fast as the average speed on Sprint's dilapidated and failing 3G network. I did not spend 600 after taxes on a device capable of such insane speeds that it's faster than about 80 of American high speed Internet access, and 120 a month on a family plan with unlimited data, to be told that going backwards a decade in connection speed is "current generation".
I advise you call a rep today and confirm this, then email the ceo with me and let him know that this is not acceptable. Should he be serious about turning T-Mobile around, then he needs to cut the subscription to the typical carrier bs that helped me drive my friends away from sprint and att (crap service and speeds in our area) and into the welcoming service of T-Mobile.
Update: I had to ODIN pure stock to get my data speeds back.

I have gotten speeds as high as 24.53 Mbps with google wallet installed. It blows my home internet away
You must be in love with Sprint to believe that 2 Mbps is sprints 3G. Sprints 4G Wimax barely...BARELY hits 3 Mbps. Sprint 3g is equal to T-Mobile 2G. I did a test in the Bay Area, California, and tmobile beat att and verizon, at 32 mbps and att was at 24 mbps while verizon only hit 8 mbps. All with 3 bars of lte.
I have been noticing that the internet speed has been dropping lately, and I believe its because of the purchasing of metro, along with them ALL wanting iPhone and lte. So people that have trouble paying their bills (ive seen the average customers, I know what they look like. Theres a few that are just like you and me, but most show off their lower class status with their huawei and zte phones.) So its Metros fault for selling out. I noticed that my internet on an att unlocked iphone 5 has been dropping and lagging the past few days, and switching to a gs4 shows that its the carrier, or my account. So, I doubt your phone is the problem.

I used to be one of those "lower class status" users, I had a stupid little Huawei Ascend on cricKet (MetroPCS partner), and while I rooted and modded it to hell, the service sucked. I migrated to AT&T and found they weren't much better, then moved back to my old carrier, T-Mo and have been happy overall. I know that after the purchase of MetroPCS, that cricKet would be the partner of T-Mo out here and all those phones (more people in the area that I -lived- in the same area as me (not out of town college kids in for the semester) have cricKet) would be bogging the network down, but it still performed well enough. In the thick of the cricKet area called Mesa, AZ, I still got over 20mbit on HSPA+ and LTE. I knew as soon as they announced all the high end phones prior to the purchase of MetroPCS for both they and cricKet that they wouldn't have the network to support it, then T-Mo purchase happened, I knew I would suffer in areas where everyone and their dog has these phones. I also know their model of pre-pay month to month was highly abused out here so I expect that bandwidth is gonna be extremely limited at times, but dropping from 24mbps normally to 2mbps is 1/12th, ridiculous. Anyways, it's back to normal, I just try to stay as far away from towers with large groups of idiots on them which is kind of hard to do around here.
EDIT: My dad has Sprint (I tried to steer him far far away from that BS but he wouldn't budge), he gets like 2-5mbps on his Note 2 which doesn't get WiMax AFAIK, only 3G, it's ready for the 4G/LTE but Sprint has lied for 4 years straight about LTE deployment out here, I'm just waiting for him to get fed up with unsent messages and dropped calls enough to give up and jump ship finally, however that won't be until he finishes his new 2-year contract like a fool.

So whats the point of LTE if your just going to get capped sooner????

For $45/month or less, 1-2 GB/month at LTE speeds is competitive... but data with Straight Talk had always been a bit flaky for me, with high latency. I wonder if AT&T's LTE on Straight Talk would be better.

Couldn't have said it better myself! Plus LTE is to battery hungry for it to be a viable replacement for HSPA+

Who knows, maybe I'm just unlucky but every time I turned off LTE on the three LTE phones I've had and relied on HSPA+ I saw about a 50% improvement in battery life. This is significant to me...
I'm not on an LTE plan anymore so I've had turned off the whole time of ownership of my s4 so I can not make judgement on this phone.
Not sure why some people always claim to get "capped" by straighttalk in every forum. I was with them a year and never got throttled or capped. My wife is using my old S2 on exact same account now-still uses what she wants, when she wants. Never received a call or text like others say they get when going too high. If you are free to go try them out-I say do it. Let us all know how their LTE is. I went to them from ATT back when they had the ATT sims the first time and could tell NO DIFFERENCE in call reception or quality.

I can attest to the throttling as I was throttle several times. It seems that once you get throttled once, you seem to be targeted more often. A lot of people were forced to buy new sim cards because the problem was so rampant.
Despite the throttling, I still think straight talk is the best deal around.
How do I find out if straight talk has Lte service where I live? Thanks

.....I don't think you understand fully what capped means....If it wasnt unlimited 2 things would happen. One no more data period once you hit that 1-2 gb limit or youd be charged out the ass for going over.... do either happen? No.
Does it get slowed down a bit once you do go over? Yes. Do you still have data? Yes. Can you still use as much as you like? Yes. Translation unlimited.
Unlimited speed. No. Unlimited data yes.
Also just because your data is faster doesn't mean you will use more faster. No matter what data connection you use you still are going to use the same amount of data regardless.
Example IF it took 1mb of data just to open Facebook on 3g its still going to use 1mb of data to open Facebook on lte. Its just going to load faster on lte
So....your post was a fail in the end.

Check AT&T's LTE map.
Yesterday, I put my T-Mo StraightTalk sim into SGH-T999L and, lo and behold, I got LTE. I did not change the APN, so it still was fast.t-mobile.com, and it worked on my ST sim. The network was shown as HOME and mobile network type as LTE. First, I thought it might be a glitch, but when I ran speedtest, it showed ~16 mbps down and ~8.5 mbps up, so I could see that it was indeed LTE. Unfortunately, I did not take any shcreenshots to prove it for naysayers here, and I do not own a T-mo LTE-enabled device. But hey, anybody can try it.
AIO (or should it be EOL/end of life) was throttled by AT&T. Still LTE, but limited to slower speed. This was proven with a side-by-side test of AIO and GoPhone.
How about ST and Net10? I use GoPhone for long road trips because there is no throttling whatsoever.

I was on AT&T GoPhone but recently switched to ST ATT. So far I haven't noticed any drop in speed myself, but I've only done anecdotal speedtest stuff relying on memory for the AT&T GoPhone speeds. The pings also have seemed comparable (I've seen 80-200 ms).

yours is one viewpoint..there IS, however, merit to the thought that faster speed equals more consumption. Coming from Sprint, if I didn't have an LTE connection I, basically, wouldn't even try certain things (updating apps/watching videos). With a faster connection comes the knowledge that you won't be waiting 5 minutes for a 1 minute YouTube video to load (let alone watching a movie/tv show via the xfinity app) and that, in turn, means you'll use more data. Not saying you're wrong because your Facebook analogy is totally accurate, just providing another viewpoint/perspective.
hello, I am a sprint user since January 2015 once I got the phone I immediately rooted it and installed galaxy tools so I will be able to activate the native hotspot feature. for 2 months now my speeds where fantastic bUT for one week now my speeds on the phone R the way the where but tethering speeds have gone down to 0.5 Mbps .
I contacted sprint and asked for my MSL code number and I was able to get the code.I have changed the dss and all the throttle and my speeds on the phone have improved but nothing happened for the tethering speed.
my question is is sprint able to throttle down only the hot spot speed and if so what can I do to get my old speeds?

I suspect throttling myself but if you reboot your phone the connection usually improves. Each time the data flow chokes... REBOOT. Other than that, Sprint is working on the network/cell sites all the time and you might have to give it a few days for it to go back to normal. For example the last couple of days I have had trouble keeping a LTE signal and tethering has been acting up as well. At times it's great and other times it's not. It's been this way for me for a long time... not just the note 4 but also with the S3 and the Note 2 as well. Ofcourse the Note 4 works with the Sprint Spark network and they're constantly working on the network everywhere. I've yet to figure out how come Sprint isn't able to "fix" the network and make tthings work dependably after a few years now. You'd think after "working on the network" for three years, they might have something respectable accomplished... but that's not the case. They can work on the network for the next ten years and it will still be subpar to pre-paid data service. That's just a shame. But when it does work well, it's definetely good enough for me especially with an unlimited plan. LOL
I've personally haven't had issues with throttle. I did however get a termination letter for using a lot of data. Which i called them about, nothing happened. I did have the unlimited all plan.

If you don't mind how much data did you use? Typically the only time you get a termination letter is when you use excess of 800mb of data while roaming. I have used over 200gb of data on my note 3 for months in a row (was over the summer in florida where LTE was amazing) and never gotten said letter. However someone I knew had used about 1.2gb while roaming (the contract I believe says 800mb allotted while roaming domestically) and got the same letter a week later.

I think it was around 300gb, but not roaming. It was all on sprint network. They knew they were wrong to send that, they didn't act upon the letter. Last year the service around my work place gotten real bad. I was pretty angry about it. So I flashed the Verizon prl and used about 100gb of roaming 3g data. Never got anything either, I was trying to get kicked out. So, long story short, I am still with sprint. Actually their service has improved greatly in Chicago land area.
I tether all the time multiple devices, never slows down. Tethering at LTE speeds when I need it. I use a ton of data, we all do, all 4 lines. Never had a letter, notice etc. Sprint rocks in my area!

Speed up the data? I want to know TOO!
I never seem to have LTE Hotspot throttling issues here. Using Speedtest.net I actually get consistently faster results on my tethered devices than I do on the Note 4 alone. I usually see between 6-9mbps on phone, and 12-17 mbps on tether! And these results are only with 2-3 signal bars LTE service at my home. This Note 4 with spark puts my old S3 to shame. I think Sprint has actually improved their network in Southern California quite a bit! Spark is much faster than the old regular LTE and seems to hold a lock on the signal much better.
