This note 5 is the first phone I have with AT&T that's getting a non-local (2600::380::....) IPv6 address from the cell tower. I wasn't getting ipv6 on my nexus 6 last week (same LTE network.)
Does anyone know if this was something that AT&T recently enabled, or if they are only doing router announcements to specific APN's and/or h/w?

From what I have read AT&T has started their plans for IPv6 since 2012 and started roughly mid 2014 rolling them out on the cellular network. They state the roll out will be slow, so it is possible they just turned it on by you. Is it possible also that it was not enabled on the Nexus 6 by default?

It's possible, but I'd think it would have to be on the carrier side if that was the case. With the nexus device, I was using the same firmware that everyone in Europe (and most of Asia) is using - and many of them were getting ipv6 numbers.
As well, my home wifi network (ipv6 dual stack) would result in an ipv6 address assigned to the handset.
Actually, to be more accurate, they were getting RA's. Android doesn't do DHCPv6 at all.
It's quite possible that AT&T just got around to turning it on in my area at the same time I switched phones, but that'd be an interesting coincidence. The more I think about this, the more I'm convinced it was related to the APN. I'm unable to check now, but I'm starting to wonder if the default APN for the nexus6 on AT&T blocks ipv6.

This guy states his was set for IPv4 by default instead of the normal ipv4/ipv6 setting.
Where are you seeing ipv6? In system settings >about device>status ? That looks like ipv4/ipv6 from your phone to att's internal network.
I did check ip6.me and that showed an ipv6 address, but couldn't be sure that was legit. ..

I'm using a third party program to check the IP addresses (one that specifically shows IPv6.) The same IP shows under settings->about->status.
The 2600:: address it's showing is a legit global IPv6 assignment, and android ONLY does SLAAC (not DHCPv6) so it must be seeing an ipv6 RA.
On the other hand, I can't ping it from the outside, so it appears that AT&T has some proxy between the phones and the "rest of the world." What I don't understand is why they'd be assigning proper global IPv6 addresses behind a proxy unless it's a stage in a larger rollout. (If they intended to keep things behind the proxy, they should be using fc00::/7 range addressing - or addresses starting with FD.)
For YOU, what ipv6 address are you seeing when wifi is turned off? If it starts with "260", it's part of AT&T's global block.

Yep, when not on WiFi, and just on data, IPv6 block starts with 2600. Interestingly, my IPv4 address starts 10.102 - so guessing that's internal IP. Not at all surprised that 2600 block is not accessible from "outside". That said, I'd be curious to see if two phones on the same ATT switch would be able to communicate with each other over the internal network? My inclination is that it's not at all possible, but...who knows?

I have a broadband modem (LTE) on my work machine, and when I connect to AT&T with that, i do NOT get an ipv6 address. Then again, it's using the older LTE apn of "broadband"

Guys,
Unlocked and rooted One X on AT&T and my pegged out signal keeps changing from H to 3G over and over and over.... you get the picture. Never stays on one very long before changing and will disrupt data services for a brief moment while it does.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior and if so, any fix to resolve?

Yea I notice it. I believe it's part of the way it saves power but idk if thats true because on my Galaxy Nexus, it would almost always stay on "H".
Mine doesn't really switch out of "H" though when actually loading something, just takes a bit to go from "3G" to "H". I've maybe experienced it once or twice when actually loading something where it would switch out of "H" to "3G" while loading something on XDA or a website. But it's usually when connection is weak.
I'm having the same issue.
if it keeps happening, then complain to ATT and ask for credit on your data plan because it doesn't work the way it should.
From what I read, AT&T phones show only h, even though in the background they switch back and forth.
But when you use international phones on the network, it will show the switching around. I'm not sure if that's related to your issue, but over here on rogers, my phone switches between 3g and h constantly, even when I'm at one location.. The thing is that I don't get long disruptions though, if any at all.
I'm on att and don't experience this. My icon switches frequently but I don't see any interruption in service.

Thanks all, just wanted to make sure that I was the only one experiencing. I will probably go into the AT&T store and see if their One XL display units is doing the same thing while I have mine with me.
Could be that "international" issue type of thing... who knows.

Moving from 2/3G to HSPA+ is by design and called fast dormancy. Here's more than you could ever possibly want to know about it.

It saves battery life and when working properly it's undetectable. That is when FD is active on a device and the network it's using supports it. (AT&T does). If OP's dropping signal something's wrong. I'd check...
- The APN's you use on AT&T must match the plan that's provisioned in your account settings. If you're on a 3G plan (grandfathered unlimited, MediaNet, data for non-Smartphones) use the 3G (Cingular) settings. If you're on a 4G (non-LTE) plan use the 4G (HSPA+) APN. Wrong APN means funky data even if it seems fine sometimes.
- Older SIMs or SIMs from iPhone's in non-Apple devices have caused problems. As has bad surgery in the move to micro. Pop in to an AT&T store and get a new micro SIM matched to the provisioning of your account.
- Bad phone h/w. In not the above it could be the device.
I've just been across the country on the AT&T network and my phone has performed better than my i9100 in picking up and maintaining a signal (I'm on a 3G plan). It's been impressive actually especially in moving from HSPA to Wi-Fi and back. So with the right settings the phone itself should be fine.

Just tried that and it's not working for me. Doubled checked, everything is exactly as he said. I just don't have the option to switch from what it currently is (MediaNet). There's no radio button for the other two. Even after deleting the original (only leaving the two I just made) and restarting, I have no connection to the network.

After you set up the new APN's try deleting the old one. You can always get it back by selecting "restore to default."

I had an unactivated micro SIM that I had my corporate account rep activate so my situation's different than yours; the SIM is tied exactly to the settings in my account. I popped it in, it picked up the MediaNet settings, and all was good.
My phone has a single APN so I can't see the way the settings look when there are multiples. The last setting in the active APN is "APN enable/disable" which is greyed out on my because there's no other choice. Did you try disabling it after you got the new APN's entered? Maybe if you do it'll allow you to select the new APN's you created.

My "APN enable/disable" is greyed out as well. I tried the new APNs in the other thread and couldn't get a internet connection. The only successful APN with the One X was the medianet. Other than that, I'll settle for the medianet but only wanted to change it to get better speeds in my area since this phone is capable of receiving up to 21mbps.

The highest I've seen on either an international phone or an AT&T 21MB-capable phone is 8MBish down. That's in TX where there's lots of bandwidth shared by not a lot of people. In markets like LAX, NYC, and SFO you're lucky to break 5MB because of the congestion. I've seen 2MB and under in Manhatten. HSPA+ speeds on AT&T are very much YMMV.

Ok so I was looking at my piece of craptivate and its APN settings. Mine are quite different from what you guys are saying. Should I change this if I try to cut down my current sim?? Here are settings on current sim.

On the Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 is where this pertains to though other users might encounter similar problem with other phones on simple mobile.

When you turn on the portable hotspot feature with this phone, what it does is disconnect your "Simple Mobile" APN and inserts and connects using a new APN called "Tethering". When you try connecting with your PC to your hotspot's ssid, it takes you to a web page on t-mobile.com informing you with an error 503 or some other error stating that its not available. I assume t-mobile is detecting that you are not their customer and blocks it.

The reason is because that APN tries to connect to "pcweb.tmobile.com". What you have to do is once you activate your hotspot, you have to edit the apn (while it is running) and change it from pcweb.tmobile.com to simple.
No other setting is needed. I am using "APN manager" which I paid for on the market and it is well worth it. I have used it for other purposes besides this and it allows you to edit the APN while it is live. Hope this helps other simple mobile users...
Also, you have to edit this "Tethering" APN every time you run the hotspot and delete the last one as it will just keep adding the new one with the t-mobile settings every time.

This thread saved me! While I did not follow the instructions, it got me thinking to check the apn settings on my phone. As it turned out my apn was changed to a different apn when i turned on my hotspot and all I had to do was select my original apn again and tethering began to work! Awesome!
I'm using a freetel FTU152D (Samurai Kiwami) on Simple Mobile. It does change the APN every time I turn on the Hotspot, but fixing the APN settings doesn't seem to do anything; other devices connect to the wifi, but still can't see the internet. Meanwhile, I still have internet access on the FTU152D. Any ideas?

I've used my FTU152D as a Wi-Fi source using the dialog in settings and it works fine. Other devices can connect. My FTU152D is rooted with kingroot, however, would that make a difference?

I rooted mine early on with kingroot, but unrooted it when I couldn't find any third party ROMs. I think I tried the Hotspot while it was rooted, but I don't remember for sure. I'll have to try it again.
I recently set up my APN to use IPV6 instead of IPV4. However, my download speeds are around 8 mb rather than 18 mb on IPV4 mobile network.
Is there a reason for this? Can anyone else confirm that this is happening to them?
I got similar results. I just switched back.

That's the thing, I'm not sure how to do a test on an IPV6 host. I am assuming the Comcast server here in Boulder has IPV6 because my Internet does. When tested on he tmobile server in Denver I got consistent but lower speeds.
I've noticed the IPv6 APN maybe some 10–20% slower, but not 60%!
Consider making a detailed post on how you tested, and add a post to T-Mobile's IPv6 mailing list so some of us can try to reproduce?

I switched to IPv6, and my speeds are better than with the standard T-mo data settings.
I have a T-Mobile G3 and I am unable to set my APN (a copy since the built-in one is not editable) to IPV4. If I do that, the phone does not connect to the mobile data network. Looking at the logs, I get this error:
D/MobileDataStateTracker(28614): default: Received state=DISCONNECTED, old=CONNECTING, reason=apnFailed
Setting IPV6 or IPV4/IPV6 will quickly connect.
I also found some references to 6to4 when connecting to the network. I didn't copy them, but I'll dig through to find them and update.
On other versions, can you use your APN with IPV4 only? If my theory is correct, the T-Mobile version being IPV6 only is breaking international roaming, which is a pretty big deal (most of the internet, let alone other operators, is not IPV6 enabled yet).
If anyone with a handset that isn't T-Mobile test this, it would be appreciated. Really need my international roaming and nobody is sure of the cause yet.

I'm having ipv4 issues and roaming issues as well. I called tmobile twice about it and they won't help me unless I'm in a foreign country having the data issue or after my data resets because I'm maxed on roaming data allowance

At the beach today and was getting 3g to 4g showing on my phone (stock not rooted). Mail, chrome, maps and other programs were not connecting. I set up my tether to my tablet and it was able to use the data to connect with things just fine. Normally I have no problem with cell data. I assume the signal was not as strong as usual at the beach but it did show 4g and 3g and I would have thought if my tablet was able to receive the tether and load data fine the phone should have.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

OK. so far , update from original post.
************it Seems that despite my telling the associate at the AT&T store I had a grandfathered, unlimited data plan.
AND that yesterday's chat with billing), My plan was re-configured to be a "no data plan, pay as you go" device *****
The nice person at the tech support hotline escalated the problem to tier 2, and also gave me a TICKET #. (YES, you ALWAYS need a ticket number at ANY carrier when you have problems like this!)
She also gave me a 3gb plan for today/tomorrow, and told me that tier 2 would be able to re-establish my grandfathered plan.
I also told her that this happened WITHOUT MY CONSENT, WITHOUT MY SIGNATURE, and that this could become an FCC complaint (they HATE those!) as well as the automatic termination of my 2 year contract from my side.
SO, we will see, and I will update later in the week.
but I currently have data now, that 'connecting... was the key message'
