I'm in the market for smartphones, and my biggest priorities are 4G and customization; I want to be able to SSH into my phone without having to root it, and I want to be able to rapidly deploy apps onto my phone without much hassle. Would the Galaxy S3 / T-Mobile be a good fit for me?
With regards to carriers and plans, would Unlimited Nationwide 4G be appropriate?
Yes.

Any particular reason?
On the Galaxy Note II, do I have to use the pen, or can I also use my fingers?
I'm considering the Note 2 right now as well, just for the bigger screen and crazy good battery life. Actually prob going to switch to Verizon just to get the LTE and more consistent coverage as well. You don't have to use the S Pen, but it looks like it could be fun and maybe even come in handy from time to time.
The S3 is still a powerhouse and can handle anything you throw at it, the battery just probably won't last you a full day of HEAVY usage, but if you're a multitasker, I'd suggest rooting and flashing the AOKP ROM(or something similar), just because of the 8 Lockscreen shortcuts, 7 nav bar shortcuts, which I set up to basically be my "persistent" dock (which also have addtl shortcut options for long pressing), and also up to 5 nav bar shortcut sliders. Any shortcut can also be set up to launch an activity, so you can create a shortcut to compose a new email, SMS, or calendar event for example. I have my Phone/dialer shortcut setup to where if I long press it, it launches Google voice. It's a pretty sweet setup, that I'm not looking forward to giving up, if we don't ever get around Verizon's locked boot loader.
I think if you're a power user looking for a battery that will last all day, and can get used to the size, go with the Note 2. If the note is too big for you and you don't mind throwing it on a charger at some point, and you just want a beast of a phone...the S3 will be perfect for you. Been with T-Mobile for over 10 years and they are awesome, the customer service is great, plans are cheap, their coverage just isn't the best. That's the only reason I'm considering switching.

Yes you can use your fingers the spen is just a plus . The note 2 is an absolute powerhouse and its future proof with a quad core and 2GB of ram. You will be better of getting a note 2 or at least a nexus 4

The Note II is a very sexy and power-hungry smartphone.
It's has the latest technology, and will serve any user well for at least two years.
The SGS3 is still Samsung's flagship and although it doesn't come with the quad-core Exynos (US Variants) it's still a very viable option.
Quite honestly, you can't go wrong either way. Just bear in mind the screen of the Note II. I got to hold one next to my GSG3 today and it's a very noticeable difference to me.
If you want the latest updates, continual support from devs (the Nexus One STILL gets updates) then go with the Nexus 4. Bear in mind the things that you are giving up with the Nexus 4 (sd cards, removable battery)
All in all, the SGS3 will serve your needs. It's fast, beautifully designed, and has a very strong community of devs behind it that will surely stay for years to come.

this phone is seriously ridiculously amazing. far exceeded my expectations (i've only had it for 2 days and im in love) by far the best phone i've ever had. it's buttery smooth which to me was my only issue with past android phones. no lag whatsoever and the display is beautiful.
It was a tough decision to move from pure Google to the note 2. But reading reviews and having multi windows open sealed the deal. Anybody else leave galaxy nexus for this phone?

Never mind I read that question wrong lol
Usually people don't leave stock Android if they like that. But if you enjoy that layout of the stock Android home and app drawer, then you can download the Nova Launcher (you can even get the stock icons instead of the ugly TouchWiz icons). I came from a CM ROM back to stock and needed that look. However, there is sooo many more features in touchwiz that are nice.
But especially with the development section, you should have no problem getting an AOSP ROM if that's what you prefer in the future.

I think this has to do with the icon being lower resolution. This is the fault of two things. 1 is that the Galaxy Note 2 is high resolution. 2 is that many graphics within apps, including icons get enlarged by the 5.5" screen. With most tablets there is a different icon graphic that is higher resolution than the "Smartphone" icon graphic. You are seeing the "Smartphone" icon graphic on this 5.5" screen. This icon graphic was designed to be for smaller screens. Hopefully this will get better as developers design "Smartphone" icon graphics for larger screens.
This effect is like seeing lower resolution video and graphics on your very high resolution HD very larger screen TV or monitor. This is the downside of using larger, higher resolution screens. And this is only going to get worse on lower resolution videos and graphics with higher resolution larger screens.

One of the things you can do is use a different Home Launcher. The choose to have more columns and rows on your desktop and app drawer. This will smaller the size of the icons to the point that they become less pixelated. Some Launchers will allow you to resize the icons too. Either way resizing the icons to smaller size should solve the pixelated icons problem.
I personally like the adding more columns and rows because that utilizes the screen real-estate to with more icons.
Some favorite Home Launchers are:
Nova Launcher Prime
ADWLauncher EX
Apex Launcher Pro
Go Launcher EX
Nova Launcher (free version)
Apex Launcher (free version)

Ok to the reply that says I dont have a note please check where the post is being post from it says right below what im using..to others thanks for your opinions I guess it is the note thats too much of a high resolution for some apps . I know the s3 has higher pixels and a smaller screen so everything looks crispier thats what I meant. Hate to admit but just being picky on little details. Another question does anyone have issues with theyre micro usb charger mine falls of the phone on its own weird.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't say it's terrible, but the quality is noticeable if comparing.
The note2 has the same res as the S3, both 720x1280, so lower ppi (267) bc of the larger screen.
Coming from the GNexus (316) ppi, I def notice it. Same next to a nexus4 (320ppi) with 768 x1280. For comparison, the iphone5 and 4S are 326ppi. The droid dna is a ridic 441ppi (1920x1080).. But haven't seen it in person yet.

There was a review, not sure who wrote it but it did state that some icons did look a little old on this display. I can understand. You have this beautiful HD background and some apps icons look out of place, like the were made with a dot matrix printer.

I like the GN2 of course but i wish it had the ability to do 6x6 grid without messing around with DPI in builprop because then others apps get effected too...plus would like to do this WITHOUT a launcher.

I thought the same, but many of us came from the Galaxy Note 1 where it was the same difference, 5.3 to 5.5
Alot of it depends on screen quality difference for me, and it would have to be much better for me to pull the trigger on it

I still have the note 1 too. There was a significant difference in software, battery and performance between 1&2. There is not much on the s4 that I can't do on the note 2. I use my 2 for work and a bigger screen would be a benefit. Not saying I won't get the 3 but if the rumours hold true , in my case, there would be no benefit to upgrade. Will see what Sept 4th reveals.

this is the smart thing to do..
I grabbed a note 8.0 a couple of months ago, and it is fantastic; there was a BIG difference between the note 1 and 2, so it made it a worthwhile upgrade; going from the note 2 to the note 3 appears to be nothing more than bragging rights, about having the newest phone.
Until the Note 3 actually comes out, none of these "leaks" have any relevance to most people anyways, so we will just have to wait and see..
I'm happy with my Note 2. The same as I was with my GS2, thus skipping the 3. However, I'm excited to hear about the new software features - I want to see a photo editor that really takes advantage of the digitizer.

A 6" screen would have been nice but I thought the small jump in screen size going from the s3 to s4 wouldnt be noticeable but it is.
I am really looking fwd to sept 4 because until then we really dont know anything for sure.
I will get the 3 more than likely regardless but I wont get rid of my 2 either as its still an amazing device.

I would be surprised if we see 4.3 on our device anytime soon. I bet it will be at least 2014 before we see it.
It makes sense from business standpoint to not upgrade the Note 2 to 4.3 while the Note 3 is out for a bit.
Same reason why the Galaxy S3 was never upgraded to 4.2. They want to heat on the S4 as long as they can.

Ya think? From what I've been reading (rumors) it seems like Samsung will be skipping 4.2 in favor of 4.3 and it sounded like its not far off. Maybe within the next couple of months. It would be nice but what you said makes sense also. I guess time will tell.
Wow that pic really shows how lame an upgrade this is. 6'' would have been the natural progression for note 3. This pic makes me feel even more disappointed.

Well, xperia z ultra is horrendous. Great specs but very unwieldy looking. To much upper and lower bezel. One max looks interesting but buying HTC is as likely for me as buying an iPhone (not in this lifetime). Will wait and see what they show before condemning it for screen size alone.
Sent from my SGH-I317 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Problem for me is that, screen size is pretty much the main thing I would like to improve over my Note 2. The multi windows or floating windows option would be much better on a slightly bigger screen not to mention other apps making it more productive using other apps that can benefit from the added size.
The Z ultra has horrible bezels but I dont mind that much. If it was not for the stupid battery I would be all over it.
HTC...well I had a Tilt 2 once..that was my only HTC so not a big fan but at least it is 6".
Then again, I probably wont have floating windows with those so is all a tough decision but looks maybe I will just keep my Note 2 for now :/

Me Too...
It depends on the CPU/RAM for me, at the moment.
1080 would be a nice increase in resolution, but if you are happy with the note 2 (as many of us are) so far, the note 3 doesn't seem like a big step up from what we got already.
That said, I've got an upgrade coming up in a couple months, on one of my lines. So I could get the note 3 on upgrade and not spend a dime.
But, we don't know the whole picture yet.
If they frack with the internals like they did on the note 1, I'm probably going to skip the note 3. Unless the north american version is top tier, and not cutting corners on slower memory or a cut back CPU, it's going to be a hard sell for note 2 owners like all of us.

You have to remember people wanting the screen to get much bigger are a minority, they have to go the way business tells them. After the looks I get with the note already I can safely say most people already consider it huge, so it makes sense they wouldn't want to push it to the point where they would lose most of their sales. We definitely represent a small minority here

Yeah, I agree with this. Most of the people that wanted a bigger screen are the ones in the rooting and modding community. Everyone else that I have met or know always say "man that's a big phone" or "that's just too big". How unfortunate.
I would have actually preferred to have the phone size reduced without the loss of the screen size, but a slight increase in the screen size with much higher resolution is not bad either. Any larger than the current size would be uncomfortable to carry around. If so, it would be better to buy the Note 8 instead!

Useless? You're not trying hard enough. Get Note Buddy, CM S Pen Add-on, and Papyrus all off Play for free. Screenshot hardware shortcuts vary depending on the ROM, Vol-Down+Power is a common one otherwise screenshot can be added to the power menu.
Gimmicks are things like eye tracking, hand waving for scrolling etc. There are tons that only add ROM bloat that have little real value. There's a whole dictionaries worth of these included in the 4.2.2 included with s4, and likely all that crap and more included in 4.3. Sadly most all the UI improvements to Android in 4.2 and 4.3 are whitewashed over in TouchWiz.
