Hello guys
I will receive my zf2 on monday, but im kinda lost with the root and OTA. Could you help me with my concerns?
1) I saw that exists 3 methods of root. Each of them has differences about future OTA updates.
NOTE:
If you root via METHOD 1 you can update SuperSu app as well as update binaries but PLEASE DON'T apply any OTA update as the phone WILL GET STUCK IN A BOOTLOOP...Manually flash the firmware via adb...
If you root via METHOD 2 you CAN UPDATE VIA OTA/NO BOOTLOOPS BUT YOU HAVE TO UNROOT FIRST BEFORE APPLYING OTA
If you root via METHOD 3 you CAN UPDATE VIA OTA/NO BOOTLOOPS AND UN-ROOTING BEFORE APPLYING ANY OTA IS NOT NECESSARY.
If I root using method 3, will I have no headache when receveing and installing future OTAs? WIth a rooted phone, will I be able to install them without further bootloops and unrooting before doing it? ( So method 3 is the easiest of them, right?)
2) About the Bloatwares that are pre-installed on zf2, Its safer to freeze them than uninstalling?
up
Root with method 3 is fine, you can OTA.
But, you delete any Bloatware, the ota will fail.

Right, at first I used method 3 and uninstalled a lot of bloatware but the next OTA failed because it didn't find files to patch...
Now I still use method 3 but just disabled the app I don't want/use, and OTA work fine, did it 2 times already.
Its safer to update the cellphone, than aplly root, or the inverse?

it's always safer to unroot first just in case asus changes something that could cause a bootloop even when using method 3.personally I prefer to unroot, remove busybox and xposed then update.

Someone flashed me to 4.1.1 and told me not to do the OTA update when I get it and I am unsure his reasoning. I have just received the OTA update and am hesitant to do so cause he told me I shouldn't this is my build.

Please let me know if I should accept the OTA or not I am very noob when it comes to this stuff and thanks
Maybe he rooted your phone too, and didn't want the update to break root.

Is that the only reason not to accept the OTA, he did root it but that can always be redone. If I accept it I wont loose my data saved on my phone will I? I shouldn't I would think

The update won't install. Its best to just flash a rooted version of said update.

Root doesn't prevent OTA updates from installing. However, installing the update will unroot the phone unless you use something like CWM which can keep root for you.

I tried the OTA but it shows an android with a Red sign in his belly. So basically I want to get my phone back to where I can get updates straight from Google and I don't need my phone rooted. Is this possible? If so I need instructions lol Much appreciated!
Hello fellow XDA members!
I was just wondering about OTA updates, and since there seem to be a lot of rumors around the interwebs, i figured i might as well ask. Are the OTA updates affected post root and CWM flash? And if it is, what can one do to still get OTA updates if so?
Thanks in advance!
You can reinstall the stock recovery. You will lose your root if and when you utilize the OTA.

Great thanks! Is there anyway around this without losing root and/or CWM or would i have to update through kies? One more thing, if i remove bloatware from my device, would i still be able to update through kies?

There is usually a flashable zip made available of a rom update. These are typically already rooted. Usually happens within 12 to 24 hours has been my experience. I usually just wait. Not sure abt up up updating thru Kies with bloat removed.
Hi xda,
Im thinking about rooting my nexus 7 2013 but the problem is that I also want to be able to update my device with google's ota updates. Is there a way to root your device and still recieve ota updates from google? If there is a way, does that mean that you could update your device and still keep root? What im trying to say is that is there a way to update the device while keeping root on stock rom and stock kernel?
Thanks

Being rooted has no effect on getting OTAs. If you are completely stock (w/ stock recovery), you will still get an OTA notification. If you're using SuperSU Pro, there's an OTA survival mode that should keep you rooted even after updating via OTA. Worst case scenario is you lose root, in which case, all you gotta do is flash SuperSU again in recovery and you're good to go.
Check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/info-nexus-5-ota-help-desk-t2523217
It's in the Nexus 5 forum, but still serves pretty good insight on how OTAs work.
Yes and no. I've updated before with custom recovery and root and had no problems, but another time I got an error message because one of my system files may have been unintentionally modified even though I was careful not to modify any system files. So it usually works, but no guarantees.

In that case, all you would have to do is flash the system.img from the factory image, then flash the OTA update zip in recovery.

Hello
Thanks to this forum, I was able to Root my Tab Pro 10.1 and edit my permissions.xml so Apps can use my SD card.
Now that I am rooted, what happens if Samsung pushes a update? Are they any apps that help preserve root over a update (I used to use Voodoo Root Keeper on my old Asus Tablet).
Or do we update and have to wait for a new root method?
Sorry if this has been asked before, I appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Jason

I don't think you'll be able to do an ota update. When I have my rooted Tab Pro 12.2 check for updates, I get this message, "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available." Hopefully SamMobile http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ has the update soon after the ota. Then download for your region and try to root again. It'll be a first for me too.

First of, you should never have to root again. The scary part is over. You should however install TWRP. Then when a new ROM gets released, you do a TWRP backup, and flash the new ROM . No muss, no fuss. You should also be using Titanium Backup on a regular basis so that you always have a current backup of your apps and data. Much faster, easier and SAFER than an OTA backup from the manufacturer.

Hello Aybesea69, are there just stock ROMS of the OTA released?
I am familiar with TWRP, TB and flashing.
If you're feeling adventurous, there's this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2776206
It's still in the early stages, but looks promising.
I was only able to update using Kies, not OTA. Root was gone.

So you were rooted, and updated using Kies? Then you lost root? Were you able to re-root?

Sorry, I haven't tried to re-root. I'm going to wait until custom ROMs are available. But yes to your other questions. While my device was rooted, whenever I checked for updates from the tablet, I kept getting the error message that my device is modified and no updates were available. So I installed Kies on my PC to check for updates. Kies found the latest update and installed it successfully. I lost root once the update completed.

I'm still using stock unrooted, but I'm wondering if I root my G Pad only without flashing a custom recovery and ROM, will I still be able to update via OTA like usual or I have to unroot first!
Thank you very much in advance!

In the past several people have reported problems when taking an OTA update with a rooted G-Pad. Rather than risk it, I have always done a completely clean update with a wipe of the device using the LG Tool Upgrade Recovery with my V500. Once that completes I re-root the device and continue on.

Even if you don't have a custom recovery installed? Because I saw that some people with root only updated their G Pads ota with no problems with only root removed afterwards! They may have lied however!
I think this ota update with root problem applies to most android phones, right?
Thanks for your help

Excellent, it is good to hear that root without changing recovery could work when taking an OTA update. I was only quoting what I had read, not what I had personally experienced. If it were to fail I would assume you could always use the LG Tool and do an upgrade recovery to reimage the entire tablet.
I did the latest OTA update (while drunk) and it updated fine and I still had root when I woke in a panic the next day wondering if I had soft bricked it.

A few months ago my g pad was root and I successful updated it to kitkat via ota update. But recently it showed up another update on the tablet and when I tried update it, it failed giving an error. I think if u are running kitkat and are rooted then ota update won't work.

Thanks for your feedback guys! The G Pad community is awesome! I'm happy I bought this excellent tablet with awesome specs! Nothing can beat its value for money and great design!
I rooted with towelroot and hope I receive future updates! Never thought towelroot would make rooting so easy as with my previous phones, had to do some steps while connected to pc.
