Hi, I need some info from all the Project T users out there (both phone models).
As I made some tests I discovered that the OC code in ZE551ML doesn't seem to work consistently (or not at all according to some users).
I know that UC works, but depending on your feedback I will just continue with one UC'ed build or keep the normal and the OC/UC build
So here my Poll question:
Who has real performance improvements with the OC code?
1) ZE551ML and OC does work
2) ZE551ML and OC doesn't work at all
3) ZE550ML and OC does work
4) ZE550ML and OC doesn't work at all

I can see the phone running at 2000mhz in the freq table... But no much performance boost...

It doesn't improve performance but yes showing 2ghz in 1.8ghz..
And as I said I can test any build which have 1.8ghz to 2.3ghz if you want and zenfone zoom is going to have 2.5ghz, gpu @640mhz, if they released source, try to implement what they did in that, becoz basically all are same hardware with different clock,. .
It shows 2.5GHz, but geekbench score is not higher than using 2.33GHz. The score for 2.5GHz is even a little bit lower. Tested with performance governor.
Yeah, I feared that...let's see what this poll says, then I can decide if I at least keep the underclocking and keep only the UC version
Intel processors are probably well locked. If tdp throttling is an issue, that can be worked with, but playing with the multiplier is probably out. If anything building a kernel with support for implausibly high frequencies could be a good test. If the phone "works" at 4ghz....

As I sayed in the Kernel-Thread, all my testing makes clear, that on my phone OC doesn't really work. I see the higher clock used in CPU Spy / Kernel Adiutor but there is no performanceimprovement (551ML).
Thank you for your work. And maybe, there is a solution to unlock the SoC.

i think you will just start to get kernel panics if you try to go much higher .
i have another phone (lg 500) also with the same arm6 cpu that comes clocked at 600 from factory. i have the option to oc to 825 with custom kernel but it always panics at 806 and is stable at 787.
So i think if you want a faster phone go buy one

P500 has an ARM11 MS7227 processor
Wildfire has an ARM11 MS7225 processor.

Hi I have mine set to 710 and any higher starts getting random reboots.
But overclocking any higher than 768, your risking a chip melt or definitely shorting its life.
I heard there was a problem with stability issues before. Has it been fixed?
Also, do any of you guys feel the need to OC in the first place?

I tried OC'ing to 1,4 for a short time, didnt get any instabilities.
Which leads me to question two. No I don't feel the need to OC this phone, it is still good enough to cope with everything i throw at it.
The worst that will happen is that it will run a little hotter than normal. I was running Trinity Kernel on RasCream ROM clocked at 1.5GHz and it was fine, nothing crashed, no reboots, all was well.
Besides; It's a Nexus, it was built for this!

Meh. It all varies. No 2 chipsets are the same. What may work for someone else may not work for you. Trial and error is the only surefire way to find out.

I agree with what has been said above, all the CPU's are not equal but actually the progress made by the kernel devs allows all (or almost) phones to run at 1.3* Ghz (1.34/1.35 Ghz, it depends of the kernel) without any issues.I think it's for all, actually I don't remember a user with issues at 1.3* Ghz...
And for most phones 1.5 Ghz is fine.For some others, above 1.5 Ghz is problematic but it depends also of too many factors.
Now it's not like it when the Genx came out, where 1.3 Ghz was the limit of CPU overclock for all the phones.
And many people can run stable at 1.65 Ghz, also it depends of the kernel.
For me for example my max CPU freq usable each day, so stable is 1.72 Ghz with Glados kernel, above (like 1.8 Ghz) it runs fine for 30 mins, sometimes 1 hour, but after always freeze/reboot... maybe my CPU can't reach this CPU freq or maybe my settings are wrong (voltage) ...
I agree, an extreme overclock like 1.72 Ghz is not really necessary for all day (heat, battery life, etc...) but a little overclock like 1.5/1.53 Ghz and you a difference in certain case (openning some apps, general UI, browsing, etc...).
But if we have the ability to test and play...why not... ,in any case for me it's yes, I like overclock and test the possibilities/limits of my phone, different settings...
Everyone does as he wants and it depends on what you want (battery life,a little more power in some situation like playing or a higher bench score ).
Well considering Texas instruments recommended highest clock speed for this processor is 1.5 ghz I'd say your fine. Anything above that is dependent on how well your chip set will handle it. Besides who honestly has needed to OC for anything other than benchmarks?

At present faux kernel can oc depending on what variant CPU you have but max at 1.6ghz

how does the OC work? i mean then running all our core it is limited to 1.2 ghz and is 1.5 on a single core.

I suggest you flash faux's kernel.
It can oc to 1.6GHZ for most user~
and it support s2W!

Anyone overclocking should be aware that this will usually lead to higher power consumption which leads to more heat produced and lower battery life.
Especially if it is necessary to overvolt to acheive higher clock frequencies with stability.
Power consumption is proportional to Voltage squared, so small increases in core coltage can result in larger increases in power consumption than mught be thought.
Needless to say this can have negative impacts on battery discharge time and overall life (due to higher temperatures).
Plus there may be some throttling back of frequency if high temperatures are reached. Also possible that frequency may be reduced to 1Ghz maximum when battery voltage is low (i.e when discharged)

CPU throttle starts at 85c with thermal TJ-max of 99c.
also there is many debates about this, higher speed need more power which drains battery, but that said it means work gets faster meaning it can idle faster saving power, same the other side slower speeds save power but take longer to get work done using more power.

Flash Faux123 latest kernel to know what variant you have.
You can have 1.5ghz quadcore minimum, except if you have the poor variant0 of the Tegra 3, and 1.6ghz quadcore max if you have variant 3
So the overclocking you can achieve depends on your Tegra 3 variant, whatever the kernel, don't trust the figures in kernel threads titles, they just give the max if you have variant 3. And the majority of people have variant 1 so limited to 1.5ghz quadcore and there's nothing to do about it, no future kernel can change the way your CPU was manufactured.
Just, SetCPU can display 1.6ghz or more, but if you have variant 0 or 1 it will never use it (CPUspy will say 1550 and 1600 are unused frequencies)
Variant 1 can go upt to 1550mhz but not for quadcore, so who cares....! Same for kernels claiming up to 1.7ghz, it's in single/dual core, so once more, who cares?
What is important is what max speed you can achieve in quadcore, nothing else, and the limits are clearly defined by your Tegra3 variant

Nice words and I just won't to add variant 1 can now go to 1.55ghz with faux 07vf I'm currently usein with the lowest most stable undervolt values and less heat than stock kernel and gameplay is amazing also on arhd 9.4

Your argument makes sense, but unless the governor is very efficient at controlling the CPU speed very quickly, in most cases your argument doesn’t hold true. For example when playing a game or running a CPU intensive application (where overclocking has any use) the processor works at full speed for the duration of the application.
EDIT: Frankly I don’t see any point in overclocking a phone like One X. I don’t play many games, but the few games I have played ran very smoothly. And if people are overclocking because of the (barely noticeable) laggy UI then overclocking is not a real fix anyway. Installing a custom ROM (perhaps JB), a different launcher, tweaking background apps/services are some of the more sensible and effective things to do instead.
No disrespect to the devs who are working on overclocking, but IMO HTC and nVidia must have spent a considerable amount of time and effort designing the CPU and deciding the optimal operational parameters to maximize performance while minimizing battery drain. Therefore anything out of those parameters (in theory at least) should impact either stability, or battery life. Perhaps the values HTC has decided are not the maximum possible values , because I assume they would have designed the phone to handle few exceptional conditions (i.e: extremely hot weathers). But I think over clocking would probably cause more problems in the long run than whatever the little gains you experience in short term. Just my 2c.

I tried faux 007b5, so overclock free too, I had 1.55ghz indeed, but never for quadcore, just for single or dual. Sadly I wasn't able to reach 1.5ghz quadcore but 1.4
With 007u, I have 1.5ghz quadcore, but 1.55 is an unused frequency
Can you check, with tegrastats, if you reach 1.55ghz quadcore or only for 1,2 (or3??) cores?

I tried tegrastats and I got 1.55 4 cores for about 20 sec and then 2 shut of and then ran 2 at 1150 playin dead trigger and on cod zombies 2 cores at 1350 witch I find strange faux 0105b

And this tablet doesn't need overclock. Nor will it handle it. The only thing that would be helpful is voltage control. it gets hot enough as it is.
If you really want a performance boost root it and change the cpu governer to performance. It locks the cpu at 2. 3 ghz. (the tablet will get insanely hot though)

I am not working on a custom kernel. I am working on a new kernel to be the CM kernel but it will still be stock voltages and speeds...

I've heard that it's possible to overclock our GPU to 905mhz by removing frequency table from dtb - when all frequencies are gone the chip defaults to 905mhz on GPU.
Now how do you do that ? I have no idea... Been asking around for couple of days and anyone that knows won't tell '-'
Most I've gotten is that dtb is inside boot ; some new 870's are locked and can't go even 1mhz above... That's all
Now make out of that what you want , it's rather conflicting info when there are reports that it works just fine one hentai os , even overclocks to 940mhz - Keep all frequencies just add a new one on top (940 MHz and edit voltage table for it to turbo 1 voltage). That's the best solution for anyone doing overclocking... You get to keep all other frequencies as well but it does not work on other ROMs due to hentai os using a different device tree to everyone else...
Hence why I'm looking into how to delete whole table to at least unlock 905mhz. I'll be using peltier cooler so heat is no issue I just want performance - its heartbreaking when 700 series chips can score much much higher than 870 simply because they can be overclocked unlike ours....

Because for me, this chipset is crazy fast, and every game and app I throw at it, plays smoothly. I never have stutters in any game or app.

I do feel the lack of performance though... Frame instability and not quite 60fps in more heavy games.
Even snap 888 struggles in certain games and considering that snap 865 already is able to meet and exceed perfomance of 888 doing the same on 870 will , well offer even better experience once heat is handled...
I'm currently looking for earliest rom for this device to see if it would be possible to do it there w kona but no luck so far...
I was also recently view a photo of the Poco F3 8/256GB and it was running at 1072MHz, the only information I had from whoever passed this photo was that it was from a Russian forum/chat and that it was only possible in the first batches of the 870!
I'll keep following it, if I find something, I'll let you know!

That's crazy! At 1072mhz he must have surpassed Rog5's performance. All I am seeing is that it overclocks to 683mhz and that is it otherwise it goes into bootloop. What good is 13mhz anyways? Rather keep it stock then.

There are many photos on telegram of people overclocking their 870 recently... Insane results , 99℅ stability and 25℅ higher scores in 3d mark .
Optimus drunk kernel + konabess overclock .
If anyone feels like trying post results here , if it worked or not... I heard somewhere along the way that it only works on hentai os even if your phone is an early batch model and since optimus kernel is based on utsav's kernel ( hentai os kernel ) , there's a good chance that installing it will allow overclock on aosp roms.
I don't wanna try personally for many reasons - optimus d kernel devloper sucks in my opinion, I tried his earlier kernel when it was based on quantic kernel and let's just say he butchered it and made something 10x worse... I think if utsav's kernel can allow for overclock you're better off using that instead lol
Might try later on idk , if anyone else does please keep us updated!

Is there a way a to know if we have one of the early batches? I have poco f3 and havent even updated it to latest miui. I am still on 12.0.3 lol and man as far as perfirmance is concerned I am really not seeing huge performance gains over miui to be honest. Like there is this one youtuber who almost checks all roms and there are only some to trump miui in bechmarks and in Pubg gameplay the results look to be the same. It lags where Miui lags and performs great where Miui performs great. On top of that if we add bugs and the sheer level of dullness of pure stock android I dont see a reason to flash a custom rom( the super wallpapers and AOD on miui is great). I was really excited about overclocking though because it had insane performance gains one guy has posted a article on xda overclocking 865 to almost 900mhz and comes neck and neck with sd888 in gpu. I asked him about overclocking 870 and he said it seems to be not possible but we can try to disable thermal throttling and it will still stay below sd888 temperatures and will have the same performance. I do doubt it though because the real performance comes with overclocking and with only 683mhz clock I dont see it beating sd888 because if the device runs cool it can almost use 100% and even with full performance it wont beat 888 but thats what he said.

You have to try for yourself and see , if it bootloops it's not an early model....
The results difference is huge , wdym you don't see it beating 888. Snapdragon 865 already has practically the same performance , only loosing in cpu department. If you overclock gpu in 870 you are already leagues ahead off 888 - same cpu performance + much better gpu performance. All at the lower heat than 888.
Sadly no devloper is paying any attention to this. I digged up that if you remove any and all mentions in kernel about frequency table the chip will lock itself at it's highest supported gpu freq ( 940mhz + ) - this could possibily work even on locked devices? I have no idea , no kernel devloper that I asked even responded lol

I digged up that if you remove any and all mentions in kernel about frequency table the chip will lock itself at it's highest supported gpu freq ( 940mhz + ) - this could possibily work even on locked devices? I have no idea , no kernel devloper that I asked even responded lol

First this first Snapdragon 870 is impossible to Overclock on Chip Kona v2.1 guys it is hardware lock on software just like Snapdragon 855+/860 is max 692MHz.

Second don't do anything stupid like 1020MHz or anything like that Voltage Regular is design for 905MHz and can sustain up to 950MHz at MAX.
Most devices 940MHz gives better performance than 950MHz because of performance.
Third thing because of Voltage Regular from Qualcomm overclocking above 950MHz doesn't bring any new performance only lowers it.
You have to check for GPU stability by locking in Kernel manager min and max frequency and frequency you want test.
At that level even the best SOC get UI lag and unstable performance.
In real benchmark scores are lower on 1020MHz vs 925MHz because of Voltage Regular.
In Games like Breath of the Wild on EGG NS performance wins with 888 as well as 8G1 and fps stays the same 925MHz vs 1020MHz.
If you do anything above 950MHz you risk of bricking your device in couple of weeks.
You can't just add 905MHz at ridiculous high Voltage like Turbo_L1 which is 416mv will get massive throttling.
You have to design new frequency table and new frequency at good stable voltage for every device.
Adreno 650 at 925MHz or 940MHz gives almost 5700 points in 3Dmark Wild life.
In Gigaflops FP32 it beast Snapdragon 888 by 10% more raw power.
Adreno 660 on 840 MHz has 1702 Gigaflops
Adreno 650 on 905 MHz has 1853 Gigaflops
Adreno 650 on 925MHz has 1894 Gigaflops
Adreno 650 on 940 MHz has 1925 Gigaflops

Now make out of that what you want , it's rather conflicting info when there are reports that it works just fine one hentai os , even overclocks to 940mhz - Keep all frequencies just add a new one on top (940 MHz and edit voltage table for it to turbo 1 voltage). That's the best solution for anyone doing overclocking... You get to keep all other frequencies as well but it does not work on other ROMs due to hentai os using a different device tree to everyone else...
Hence why I'm looking into how to delete whole table to at least unlock 905mhz. I'll be using peltier cooler so heat is no issue I just want performance - its heartbreaking when 700 series chips can score much much higher than 870 simply because they can be overclocked unlike ours....

Pretty sure you can overclock the GPU with custom kernel alone, it involves you to take out some security checks which could be potentially "blowing up" your device if you mess something up.
However the thing about the 905mhz without table is something I've also heard for the SD 865 plus variant. I'll try to make some kernels without the table and see how the chipsets act on it.

I asked him about overclocking 870 and he said it seems to be not possible but we can try to disable thermal throttling and it will still stay below sd888 temperatures and will have the same performance. I do doubt it though because the real performance comes with overclocking and with only 683mhz clock I dont see it beating sd888 because if the device runs cool it can almost use 100% and even with full performance it wont beat 888 but thats what he said.

check your dumpstate on miui bug report and seach for a word 2.1 , if you see chip version 2.1 its a new version but i think the early batches is the one that doest have any design on the back cover just a flat color
