Lollipop update - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I am getting so frustrated at T-Mobile. Is is phone every getting an official update to lollipop. Every other gs4 has been updated except the m-919.
Sent from my SGH-M919

I don't believe it will get the update. It's not on any recent update list I've seen. Frankly I was surprised they even pushed the stage fright patch. I basically consider the phone abandoned by T-mo in terms of substantive OS updates.

I guess i didn't think a carrier had the power to refuse an update the manufacturer pushed out, oh well, i guess I'm going to LG g4 when i can jump over.
Sent from my SGH-M919

Yeah I think the excuse they gave a little while ago was that it was going to cause to much of a performance stop. I forget which phone, but one of the devices updated to kit Kat slowed and caused people to get upset. I think that was the reason they gave for the s4 not getting it.

Samsung has already released Lollipop for pretty much every variant of the S4, including AT&T.
Performance is not an issue with the AT&T build, so T-Mobile's only excuse is money.
T-Mobile would have to invest time and resources into adding their WiFi calling and VoLTE features to the build before they can release it.
T-Mobile knows they aren't going to make any $$$ pushing Lollipop to the S4, so they abandoned the phone.
Pushing Stagefright patch required very little effort as they simply patched their existing 4.4.4 build.

Seeing as how they pushed out a GPE version today, I'm hoping that they are working on an update

Is there a recent xda thread on adapting the i9505 Lollipop firmware to the M919?

I'm not surprised T-Mobile isn't pushing Lollipop. They want you to upgrade to a new phone instead. AT&T and Verizon were still selling brand new S4s in Spring (my father-in-law bought a new Verizon S4 from Best Buy in May), so they may feel obligated to continue supporting it. I think T-Mobile dropped the S4 at the beginning of 2015.

Yes, there is. Check out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539361
I've installed it on my M919 and so far it's bug free. Absolutely no bloatware and battery life seems better than the stock 4.4.4/OH3. Hint: upgrade to latest stock firmware first as recommended. We did this with Odin to OH3 without issues.

4.3 finally scheduled - somewhat

I haven't seen anything posted about this yet, but 4.3 is finally scheduled for the s3, at least in france. Hopefully by january we'll see a 4.3 rom released. I know you can get 4.3 now using AOKP or cyanogen but I actually like touchwiz so I'm looking forward to getting this.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Road...xy-S4-Galaxy-S-III-and-GALAXY-Note-II_id47806
It says the S4 will be updated to 4.3 in October, while the S3 and N2 will be updated in either November or December, if that's true, our S3 won't see 4.3 until March or April...possibly May 2014.

I will not believe it until I see it. I have seen many places talking about dates, that day, maybe , maybe not posted about went or went not. I think like all thing in this arena we will have to wait for someone to port it went it does finally come out . And just the fact that developers move on to other devices S4 and others it may never happen for s3. I have refuse to keep upgrading my phone and dumping so much cash for a new phone just for the newest android version. I will run my S3 until it DIES. Unless ?
Hey any in-depended rich person out there wanting to donate an S4 to me? lol :good:
I see Android 4.4 was announced we had expected the Android 5.0 release date to be some time in October 2013. We now expect to see Android 4.4 KitKat launch during that month. In the face of that point release, we think it's now likely that we'll see Android 5.0 shown in mid-2014. It a lot of babble but On 13 June 2013, VR-Zone also claimed that Android 5.0 will be optimized to run on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM.. We will see . I have doubts we will see ...

If it's released in November I would expect to see it get through T-Mobile and be released to us by January, maybe February. I don't know why everyone always insists that it takes a half a year for ours to get updated, when all the updates we received from 4.0.4 - 4.1.2 happened within a few months of each other. Often in only 2 months.
I'd imagine that Samsung is going to push to get everything updated before or at least right after Christmas. The main reason we are skipping to 4.3 is for compatibility with future devices such as their smartwatch. They'll sell a lot more for Christmas if they are already compatible with the S3!

And you are probably wise not to. As the device gets older, it will take longer to get any updates. If I am right about the timeframe for this one, it'll likely be the last timely update we see.
If I'm wrong and we have to wait a year, then so be it. I don't plan to let it reduce my enjoyment of the device if that is true. Never understood why people get so worked up over an update! If they're not happy with it, there's always other options available.
My only real issue is with people claiming we are always last, or it always takes 6-9 months for an update, and then feeling like that gives them reason to complain about poor customer service. Personally, I'm fine with it if it does take a year. In the end, anything and everything you see written about it, including my last post, is pure speculation, nothing more. I keep getting asked about what I expect to see though, and while I don't usually like to predict anything, I figured I'd go ahead and post my thoughts on it. If I'm wrong, so be it, I'll just continue on through life with my poor outdated formerly "smart"phone! But I'll still be happy with it!

That's the thing, I'm not complaining, I just replied with a time frame when we would get the update, no need to get upset and go on a rant. I cant even remember the last time ive actually touchwiz on my s3 for more than a few minutes, I could actually care less when the S3 is updated. I'm happy as long as there's support for cm/aosp/aospa/aokp and hopefully Ubuntu touch in the near future, but I think we have a better chance of T-Mobile updating our poor outdated "smart" phone than getting a fully working port of Ubuntu touch.

I thought of making a new thread but figured it made more sense to post here, question for anybody using one of the currently 4.3 roms. What are the common problems and issues with any of the existing 4.3's? Is there a 4.3 that is good enough to use as a daily driver? I haven't tried any myself yet mainly because I have tread enough yet to make an informed choice.

The 4.3 ROMs in the development sections are custom ROMs (cm, aosp, aospa, aokp...etc). This thread is covering the 4.3 update from Samsung which we do not have.
What may be a daily driver to others may not be a daily driver for you. Go through the 4.3 custom ROM threads and read a few pages to get an idea of what issues may or may not be present and flash the one that suits your needs.
If you don't want to flash a custom ROM, then your only option is to flash the 4.1.2 touchwiz ROMs available until T-Mobile releases the 4.3 update.

I would consider those to be in beta, sometimes alpha stages. If for no other reason than they sometimes have problems reading the nv data. Doesn't happen to everyone, but it happens enough. After flashing, baseband, serial number and imei (maybe more) all read unknown or zero. You have to either reboot several times or flash another Rom, to fix.
The nv data isn't lost, as is sometimes the case with the IMEI. As I understand it, the Rom just isn't reading it.

Yeah, pretty sure it's going to get Kitkat. Even if it doesn't officially, there are always roms haha.
I hope its something to "wow" us. I mean, my friend received his update on his GN3 and he noticed a great battery life and just a bit more snappy. It was something like a 500mb download so it had to be more features. I'm wondering if we're going to get something like that or a whole new TW maybe. By the time we get the update the GS5 will be out.
Do not expected the new TW interface, the S3 will never see the new tw interface from an official update. Would probably see improvements in wifi connection, bluetooth connection, perhaps some tweaking to settings and under the armor updates from 4.4.2
We will for sure get the new update as the S3 counts for a lot of the samsung units sold aroung the world
OK folks, lets take this here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639286 for focused discussion in one thread. Thanks

The problem that I have is that the official announcement says "select carriers" leaving me to believe that there is a possibility it could never happen with AT&T. Of course since AT&T is so large I think it will go through to avoid a massive swarm of complaints. It really comes down to how quickly they will push the release.

Pretty sure Sprint releases the first update, followed by T-Mobile...then AT&T and finally Verizon. It's been that way for all devices. Ex.: the 4.3 update.
WOW, ANOTHER TOY TO PLAY WITH. OH MY GOD. WHEN DO WE GET IT? WHEN DO WE GET IT? HURRY UP AT&T. I CANNOT WAIT. OH MY GOD! WHEN DO WE GET IT? WHEN DO WE GET IT?
Look, if we ever get this update, can at least some of you hold off for a little bit and see what the update does to some of the other phones first (does it lock the bootloader, does it make battery life worse, what apps might have issues, is there a way to go back in case something goes wrong) and not make the same mistake that so many of us make with these phones by rushing to these toys, oops, updates impatiently the very first day that they come out. I call these updates toys because with the exception of the phones that have major issues, all these updates are around here is just something new to play with.
BUT WHAT IF I WANT TO, SHORTYDOGGG?
Forget it. I see that I won't get through to everybody because we are all different. Carry on everyone.

the 4.4.X update - discussion thread

http://www.tmonews.com/2014/02/andr...alaxy-s4-s4-note-3-and-other-samsung-devices/
Today, Samsung announced that it would be pushing out KitKat to a slew of its Android-powered smartphones. Although we’re not precisely sure on specific dates for T-Mobile devices, the 4.4.2 update will be rolling out from today.
Among the list of devices being supported are the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S 4 and S 3 as well as others. Full press release below:
DALLAS, February 18, 2014 – Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announced today that a number of Samsung Galaxy® devices will receive the Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) software update, enriching the Galaxy experience.
The upgrade provides a number of innovative, easy-to-use features that enhance the user experience, including a more intuitive user interface, enhanced messaging capabilities and updated applications:
· Location Menu: An integrated location menu enables users to easily activate GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile networks, while simultaneously checking the battery usage of apps running location service capabilities.
· Enhanced Messaging: Enables users to choose between Messages or Hangouts as their preferred default messaging application, and select from a larger assortment of updated Emoji icons.
· Upgraded Google Mobile Service™ (GMS) apps: Users can automatically back up photos and video and can open, view, rename and share Google Docs and files.
Samsung Galaxy U.S. devices currently scheduled to receive the KitKat update include select carrier variants of the Galaxy Note® 3, Galaxy Note® II, Galaxy S® 4, Galaxy S® 4 mini™, Galaxy S® 4 Active™, Galaxy S® 4 zoom™, Galaxy S® III, Galaxy S® III mini™, Galaxy Mega®, Galaxy Light, Galaxy Note® 8.0, Galaxy Tab® 3, Galaxy Note® 10.1, Galaxy Note® 10.1 2014 Edition.
Availability varies by carrier and product, with updates beginning today and continuing throughout the coming months.
If you have one of the Galaxy devices mentioned in the announcement, be sure to let us know when/if the update lands. T-Mobile isn’t always speedy when it comes to giving the green light to software updates on Android. Let’s hope these start to land pretty snappish.

I am used to waiting to take updates being on VZW and what they did with breaking root with the Bionic and then the S4 fiasco. But why would Tmobile launch a phone with an unlocked bootloader only to lock it after an OTA update? It's one thing to patch an exploit, but to lock an unlocked bootloader when it was meant to launch unlocked I think would be stange. Again, I'm waiting anyway, but I think the phone will stay unlocked.
Not sure how excited I am for 4.4.2
No app ops. I can't believe google would intentionally remove a vital security feature. I guess we'll just have to add it back in

I agree! In fact, that's the first thing I thought about when I heard about the news.
We do, however, still have xPrivacy, though. I've donated to the developer and hopefully we'll see continued development including, I hope, a more user-friendly system closer to the way App Ops works. (For the record, I'm not knocking xProvacy; rather I'm pointing out that it could be easier to manage for laymen like myself.)

i'm guessing you are right. But you have to remember, it's not TMO that's doing it. It's all part of Sammy Knox initiative to make the phones more secure. If you have an unlocked bootloader, there's no way to say that your product is secure. We've picked apart the last 3 builds /na6/na7/nb3 of kitkat from germany, and there's alot of pointless crap built into these roms that will have to be pulled out to , along with the regular developmental crap that sammy puts in there for "Future Updates" Like fingerprints scanner perms and instructions, radios that will never be used, and something pointing to a backup antennae even though the phone does not have one (that's for the note 10.1)
I think they are being lazy, , making one huge TW Rom and then modifying it for individual devices. If you look at the S4 release and the Note 3 release, they are identical builds minus screen size settings and the addition of spen support.
Any idea when the TMobile update will be available? Sprint customers are getting theirs from today.
Some people from g+ are claiming to get the Sprint updates yesterday. Wonder if someone from TMO got updated too.
There is a complete silence regarding Tmobile update. Even the dog slow at&t has a leaked version out.

Welcome to Marshmallow

Looks like we are one step closer to marshmallow. The T-Mobile website now shows the phone in T-Mobile testing phase.
Update: Download some marshmallows now.
Taking them way too long. Verizon already is pushing out Marshmallow for the Note. They are usually the last carrier. I'm disappointed with development from this phone.
you sure about that? to me it still shows that it is under manufacturer development
Maybe we'll see it in April
Telus may rollout Marshmallow at March 30th for s6 edge. what about t-mobile
I believe tmobile has always been the slowest in releasing updates. ..don't be surprised either April or May timeframe
I couldn't help it. I used JUMP to get the S7 Edge. In Reality it's exactly what I wanted the S6 Edge to be. I really have zero complaints about the S6 Edge. I'll miss seeing how it handles marshmallow. I think it'll fit it well.
Can't blame you. ..I'm thinking of upgrading myself. ..this update is taking to long

Actually if you click on the phone it shows that it's still in manufacturer development.

It is kind of hilarious we are now reading Android N developer preview stuff, seeing lowly Sprint rolling out updates to M and we are reading that it's still in a development phase as far as TMobile goes. I not one that thinks M is going to be that great we absolutely need to have it Android. I'm more disappointed I have been a long time Tmobile customer, and going from my first Android, my beloved Nexus One that was put at by Google at the time, to switching over to Samsung and basically being the good little follower/updater of every TOL device they put out prior to my current S6Edge which I obtained on the first day of availability last April 2015 and my wifes Note5 I recently updated her to from her Note 3. TMobile used to be known as the leader of the pack supporting their USA customer base.
Lastly, in the past up thru the latest 5.1.1 updates, it was really easy to flash an International version, use a Kerenel that played happy with TMobile hardware, and occasionally requiring an additional flash of a file to fix call audio issues and we all were golden. I'm guessing that once a TMobile supported Android M Bootloader is available, we can then happily start flashing away the many International Android M ROMs already being posted on those Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge sites.
I could be wrong on that, but I really thing once we have a bootloader posted we can all go back to complaining about this or that specific ROM issues, instead of pounding the web sites for Tmobile to get it's act in gear. Really....Sprint ahead of Tmobile....scratching my head
Sprint rolls out their updates first when business is mediocre.
Still waiting for M. This is why I dont buy Tmo S7.
Im start hate samsung, so many versions for the same cellphone or watch, I never want say this but with iphone dont happen thinks like that..
Well, finally it's showing on T-Mobile's page that it is in testing phase.

I know what you mean fabioplata, that's why I went to nexus 6p. Let me tell you that the grass is most definitely greener on this side.
And yes Alex9090 seems like I made a mistake when I started this thread, maybe my excitement got to me. But its in T-Mobile Testing phase now.
KingP1n I don't see Samsung changing their ways anytime soon. They are trying to use touchwiz in a way to make money from it. But the end result is always the same it takes too many resources away from the base OS and the whole experience feels like riding on the short bus.
This is my last Sammie phone anyway... I've been pretty disappointed in it and should have waited to buy it - always out to be the early adopter.. i need to knock that crap off..
Having to wait for hell to freeze over before getting the update just hammers it all home...
The worst part is that this will most likely be the last update this phone will get.
Imagine next year we will be where S5 owners are now last to get if ever get Android N
