I need help with adujusting resolution. - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My mother got a Tab S 8inch wifi model T700.
The tablet is great all around except one area. The resolution is messed up in certain apps that the layout and fonts appear even smaller than the one on her phone. I tried changing fonts from the tab setting and the app as well but it did not make much difference.
Then I tried using resolution or dpi changer after rooting and it looked so much better but then samsung keyboard did not work and crashed whenever resolution was changed.
Do you know any mod, app or even a custom ROM that can manage changing resolution on this tablet efficiently?
My time with the tablet is limited so any suggestions or tips are welcome and appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Any cm12 based ROM like blisspop etc etc download flash change the DPI to how many you want works great

[Q] Tablet UI on Galaxy Nexus?

Hi,
since ICS is now for phones and tablets, I was wondering if it would be possible to trick the system (pixel density?) to use the tablet UI on the Galaxy Nexus.
Despite the GN having a tablet-like resolution, it would be unusable out of the box. But hooked to a big screen (TV/monitor) and with a mouse+keyboard, it could be interesting.
What do you think?

This is definitely possible with a custom rom. I don't think you'll have any chance unless you root though.

Pixel density is usually modified in the /system/build.prop file which is read only to non-root users. Once you have root access, the pixel density can be modified via root access.
If you don't want to load root access, at least have to oem unlock, but you can also modify this file through a custom recovery as most custom recovery's allow adb to use root access by default.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the replies!
I was aware about root (not really a problem on GN), but do you think such a tweak, integrated into a mod like CM9, could be done without flashing, or even rebooting? Think about an "tablet mode" which could be launched on the go. Maybe even automatically when plugged with HDMI?

Although I don't know about having a CM9 mod style thing, you might be interested in the LCD Density app. It lets you change the density on the fly, without rebooting

Nice! Did anybody tried on Galaxy Nexus? Haven't mine yet.
I've tried setting my pixel density to 190 but after a reboot all I get is a constant launcher and system.UI FC dialogs.
Edit: I've tried again at 220 and no longer get FC from system.UI(so get navigation buttons and status bar) but they look the same. The stock launcher still FC's but with a different launcher the device seems fully functional with all the stock apps scaling fine.
200 also works and seems to be the smallest I can go.
Thanks! So it seems that changing pixel density isn't sufficient to make the GN detected as a Tablet by ICS, so bad...

Help my Mum out :) (Rom font sizes etc)

Hi, just wondered if anyone had any ideas how best to set up a desire for someone who is visually impaired the standard writing on icons etc is too small.
I'm thinking big fonts etc
Is there a Rom out there that could be easily modified (I've no experience modifying fonts in Roms, but I've flashed loads of different Roms in the past.
Or is there a better solution?
There are few apps in market: big font and big launcher. Maybe they will help a bit until you get some response from people that actually dealt with this before. Also changing dpi maybe would help.

Maybe you should try any of ICS ROMs. They have _standard_ feature of changing fonts size in display settings menu. This feature affects almost all user interfaces, so for me it works perfect in comparison to changing fonts in 2.3 by installing zips.
Moreover there is a possibility of changing font size in browse of ICS.
The main issue is to find stable ICS ROM for your device
Ok chaps, thanks for that, ill check out those apps and keep my eye on ICS development -
Spare parts + from play store. Select font size. Tried and worked on Sammy tab 8.9

[Q] Hi-resolution on Note2

Hello and sorry for maybe asking again the following question:
- If I want a higher resolution on my Note2... what should I do? Is it simple and safe? (this is the only thing I am really missing of my old Note)
- At which dpi should I stay in order not to corrupt built-in features?
In a few words... is it still an advisable operation, as it was for the old model?
Thank you for any hint!
Tito
You cant just increase the screen resolution... its a hardware not software thing.

I know, but previously I used the LCD Resolution app to just change the display resolution (or dimensions of characters) from 320 to 240... and everything looked wonderful, with much more space to be used on the screen.
If it is just the big Icons you don't like, just install an other Launcher. I use NovaLauncher Prime. 6x6 Icon-Matrix. Alot of space
and still good readability. Dont know why Samsung is using that ****ed up 4 Column Layout. Lot's of wasted space from my point
of view.
They show 5 Columns in the AppDrawer thou.
By the way changing the dpi-value always drains the image-quality i think.
As well some dpi-tweaks lead to not working Apps on other devices i had, such as the HP Touchpad
Thank you, I already have Nova and changed the matrix... but what I do not like is the dimensions of characters: at 240dpi I can read extended internet pages, have more sms or the entire email on the screen with reduced need of scrolling... the device looks "more professional" and useful!
Hm okay, i agree on that. But i don't currently know about an dpi-changer for our GN2. I'll follow this thread and see how this evolves.
oh boy was it that hard to understand the op podface? -.-
anyway as for what you want:
there is a rom with touchwiz modified to 240dpi or you can either use of the paranoid roms which are highly customizable on that aspect or just use plain cm10 and there you also can use the lcd density mod app.
that means... I have to root, change the ROM, lose automatic official updates... and above all re-enter in the tremendous slavery of changing ROM every day, testing, trying all the ROMs expecting miracles... this is what really scares me! (but I enjoyed that so much on my Note some months ago!)
yup there is no way as far as i know, to change the density without root

[Q] Some system apps not working after resolution change

This is for the D850 AT&T G3. I used Nomone to set resolution to 1080x1920 @ 480 dpi and observe two weird things:
1) Everything but the dock rescales correctly. This persists even after reboot and only happens in the stock launcher, Nova is OK
2) Several of the stock apps no loger work, and their icons change to generic Androids: calculator, calendar, clockemail, file manager, gallery, messaging, quick remote, tasks, voice command. Any attempt to launch these apps results in a FC. This happens both in the stock launcher and Nova, so I am guessing that they do not rescale correctly at the lower res.
Not a great loss, I would not be using most of these anyway, just curious if there is a workaround. I do not plan on running the monitor at more than 1080x1920. The only thing I will probably miss is the stock email app, I was planning on using that to access office mail via Exchange.
EDIT: Unfortunately it appears that I cannot set up an Exchange account with the lower res, on account of the stock app crashing instantly. This is a complete deal breaker for me, I absolutely need exchange and will need to run at full rez. Bummer, with the bootloader locked I probably can't downfreq the phone either to extend battery life.
EDIT2: You can work around every non-functioning LG app by sideloading the corresponding Kitkat stock app. Unfortunately the one exception to this is Email + Exchange, which is badly broken on stock Kitkat and Google has not bothered to fix it for many months now. For those of us that need Exchange for work this tends to be a deal-breaker issue
EDIT3: As others have noted, Swiftkey does not seem to play well with Nomone either
EDIT4: Nova is also exhbiting some minor issues, with our without Nomone. It does not break too many things, and the things it does break are mostly cosmetic - the icons of the above-mentioned apps turn generic, and the first group of Google apps in the drawer disappeears.
I changed the resolution, rebooted and got an android systemui fc loop that I couldn't get out of. had to factory reset
I then tried it again on a fresh device but wihtout rebooting this time. and like you said, a lot of things are not right...
so I'd say this is generally not recommendable
best bet might be paranoid android or something whenever that becomes possible
I agree, the display is draining the batt too quickly and I doubt underclocking the cpu is going to be of much help
Did you try changing the dpi from 480 to 530? Anything less than 500 dpi seems to force close most apps.. Change it to 530 dpi and hopefully most things should run ok

will try that, thanks
With the changed resolution I'll assume that you're rooted. You could use XPosed with the "App Settings" Module to change the DPI for the crashing system apps back to 640. I did this, and it works nicely. It is a bit of try and error in the beginning, but once you caught all apps you use it looks great.
This will probably not solve the icons issue, which is caused by LG not including the icons for other resolutions than what they recommend for the G3. They are available for xxxhdpi (640), but not for xxhdpi (480).

I'm running 530 without issues sofar. Would love to be able to go a bit lower though.
Does the Lockscreen works to you on lower then 640dpi?

How's your battery life so far, do you notice anything?
Thanks for the tips and replies, many of them quite useful. Running 530dpi with 1080x1920 is, IMO, kinda pointless, as it negates the benefits if the large screen., If we need to stick about 530 dpi (which seems to work nicely) the lowest settings that make sense are 1224x2176 with 544 dpi setting. This scales everything down by 25% from full resolution. With these settings I don't see the screen get notably warm and the icon and text proportions still make sense. With 1080x1920 @ 530 dpi things don't make any sense, it feels like you are using a 3" screen with high magnification.
So far there are only three things I have been unable to get working
1) Nova launcher to correctly display the custom icons for the above apps. Apex works fine so I have switched from Nova to Apex.
2) Swiftkey - it just gets mangled badly. I will try the "per app" setting in xPosed, but I can't see how it will help.
3) Kitkat stock email.apk with Exchange. This is a long-standing KitKat issue that Google has not bothered to fix. The LG mail works fine with Exchange but does not thread. Any good alternatives?

don't know, went back to the default resolution as too much stuff was off, like Swiftkey

browsing resolution

hi all,
I just got my 8.4 and pretty happy about it especially the screen. I have two questions though.:
1. browsing resolution seems to be 1280x800. is there a way to change that? 2.5k would be far too much but there are online panels that desperately ask for more, like plesk for example.
2. since browsers decide to work on different resolution... how do we know when we really are at 2.5k when using our tablet.? ? -
cheers!

Not sure why you would think that the resolution is only 1280x800, it should of course be 2560x1600 as that is the screen res.
And again not sure why you think browsers work at a different resolution, the screen and gpu are always displaying 2560x1600 pixels.
Have you perhaps changed the DPI setting?

thank you for your answer.
totally right about dpi here - which i didn't change cause i haven't rooted yet, but i think i will!!! - but the problem still stands.
my wrong assumption came after visiting whatismyscreenresolution.com
with firefox, chrome and stock i get 1280x800
after reading your post i made a little bit of search. Visiting whatismyscreenresolution.com with Dolphin browser i get 2560x1600....
so i give up with the resolution thinking
Pixel ratio then (which comes from dpi setting)
visiting devicepixelratio.com from any browser i get "2", so at least we have an agreement....
visiting http://bjango.com/articles/min-device-pixel-ratio/ from different browsers .... well i really don;t have the knowledge to understand all that
Still though i want more screen. Using the canvas of the above website (whatismyscreenresolution.com) at my desktop i can see that some websites width is compressed to 1000px and others to 1280px when visiting from my tab pro t320.
So the whole thing here is taking advantage of the huge resolution we get from the t320 and use it to see more things - even in favor of actual size.
is changing the dpi the solution here?
any other suggestions?
found a solution!!!!!!
needs root
install xpose framework
install "app settings" module from within xposed
app settings is an awesome module that gives you control PER APP (!!!) over the dpi, resolution and more.
so changing the dpi of Firefox to 240 gave me the extra space I wanted (default is 320)
in addition raising the dpi of an aftermarket launcher to 360 gives you the same big icons of stock...... "jizzwizz" but not the icon shadow unfortunately....
and so on
