Are you on NJ3? If so, I just used Kingroot and it worked perfectly! I would recommend getting rid of Kinguser and replacing it with SuperSU though.
here is the guide i used androidxda DOT com/download-kingroot-application
It is my opinion that kingroot should always be last resort as many have problems replacing kinguser with supersu. Not everyone may agree with me though, that is just my opinion. I would try towelroot and framaroot first.

I've been trying to root my epic 2.2 with gingerbreak and it doesn't work. I've done It before and now it says "Not sure what happened.exploit failed or reboot failed. Reboot manually and see if you have Superuser" I did everything right
Does anyone know how to fix this?

The one for cwm 3.0.2.5
if you cant live large, look big in the coffin!!!
Also, supposedly, gingerbreak only works on phones that have odined to ec05. That's the consensus at least.

I keep getting "phone not connected" any suggestions
I have tried all available options for troubleshooting and can not figure it out. The drivers are good, different cords, different Root techniques, I mean everything ... but my phone won't connect even after re-installing the samsung drivers.
Windows Vista
64 bit
phone EC05
firmware 2.2.1

I have tried all ports on my PC, no I haven't tried to use another PC though.
I just Rooted my friends brand new epic 10 days ago. I just can't figure out how to make my device connect as itself instead of "unknown"
Try the Bonsai MasterKey Unlocker, you will like it better than the stock CWM 3.0.2.5

I am also going thru the same senerial a you... if you find a "fix" for this will you please reply....like wise from me. I have even tried putting th e epic in "DL" mode. But odin does not acknowlege my phone. Hit me up . Thnx.

Before Odin can detect it you must first make sure your computer can detect your phone. That way you'll know if the drivers work fine. If it does then get a new USB cable to connect it while using odin. I got a rocketfish usb cable and it works better than the samsung one...or any usb cable such as a blackberry's works fine.

When trying to root make sure you aren't using a stock samsung usb cable. Some have been successful using them while rooting but for most it sucks. Are you enabling usb debugging?
I am having the same problem. Gingerbreak failed to run with the same error, and no amount of different cable or port (tried three of each) will avoid the phone not connected message when attempting one click root. I'd love to hear ideas to resolve either of these or other rooting options.
Update - tried the Bonsai unlocker mentioned in this thread, and tried the one click method on a second machine to which I had never connected my device. In all cases, got a phone connection failure. And yes, I have enabled USB debugging, and when I disable it, I am able to mount the phone just fine and see the external memory card, so there's nothing wrong with the USB port or cable. I have a relatively new replacement phone that came preloaded with Froyo. Maybe something has been done to newer devices to disable this ability? Can't imagine what else could be wrong.
thanks,

My bad - apparently I didn't have the right drivers installed. I assumed since I could connect in USB mode without debugging I had the right drivers, but apparently not. Sorry to bother. In case anyone else runs into this, I apparently can't post a URL to help you, so go look for a post on the Epic "All Things Root" forum on Android Forums,
It appears I am successfully rooted after having to reboot the phone once after a failure the first time I ran. Woohoo! Now I can do a true full backup.

The only way I could get mine to work (I would get the same errors using gingerbreak) I restored the phone to factory settings using the samsung recovery mode. Press power volume down and camera button. Your volume buttons are used to highlight the text and the home key is used to select. Wipe cache 3 times, and wipe the dalvick (spelled wrong) 3 times, then reset phone back to factory settings through here. Remember you will lose everything so back up your apps using AppBrain. I ran GingerBreak again and it worked perfectly. I would also get the same errors when trying to odin. Its been that way everysince I updated to 2.2. By the way I am EC05, did that before I updated because I was running midNight Rom.

ok let me start with the problem, I have a galaxy s2 and when I plug in the usb to the phone and the pc I get nothing but a charging sound. I don,t get the little pop up in the top bar that says its connected to a usb,
now with that said I know to check the debugging the usb utilities and all those setting. I even did a factory reset to no avail. I have read many post that say update the pc drivers and even have done that. I have tried different wires that I know worked at one time and also different operating systems win7, ubuntu. I do have the phone rooted and at one time it did work. it worked best with ubuntu btw no drivers needed I don't know when it stopped working I don't use it much but one day I did go to use it and nothing.
Anyway if anyone has a suggestion out there I would be glad to hear it cuz I want to put linux on my phone with adb but cant till this issues is fix thats for you time
My phone is:
standard rom 2.3.6
an kernel 2.6.35.11
Its also a SGH-T989 thats why I moved it to this part of the forum sorry if its a double post feel free to delete the other in the wrong area thank you.

had the same issue and called Samsung i told them just about everything you have going on with no luck. called t mobile and went thru there process with no luck . they determined it was a hardware failure and shipped me a new phone. if you need to go stock for warranty exchange i had to remove my sd card and transfer the "return to stock zip" and put back in phone and flash. read the directions in the return to stock thread.
yeah thats what I was thinking, might just have to swap phones with the wife she don't ever use that part of the phone. Thanks
Hi,
I have rooted by Note 2 N7100 in the past using the ODIN tool and CWM. But I had issues with some apps that were being closed at random etc. So I got tired and unrooted. But now I wanted to root it again using the ODIN. But ODIN is not able to detect my phone at all.
Please someone help me. Now that my note 2 got the 4.3, it is bloated with all kinds of crap from Samsung. I need to root to remove all the crap.
Thanks n Regards,

i did google this issue and people have come up with various possibilities what could be wrong right from faulty usb cable to re installing drivers to factory resetting their device 3x for ODIN to be able to detect their device, i am a newbie too at these things so i am not really sure what could possibly be stopping from ODIN detecting your phone but i'll be on the look out and see if i can refer to you a solution if you haven't solved it already but if you do fix it somehow please post what exactly you did to make it work so it could help future users in case they run into the same issue.
EDIT: follow this word to word ,might work for you,let me know http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34625034&postcount=7

It can't be the issue with the cable as I am able to use the cable for other things like backups and moving data from phone to PC etc. The issue with the Factory reset is that i dont have a spare phone at the moment. So if this device screws i am dead without a mobile to use.
Let me search some more and if I can find a solution i will post it here. Else I am going for the Cyanogenmod installer. I am tired of this.

Greetings, i have my t989 rooted with 4.1.2 original rom. It was with that version when i got it yesterday and then i root it and change the rom to 4.0.3 just to unlock for free without any problem. I return to 4.1.2 after all and root it all good until i want to transfer something to my phone and now the phone disconect from computer. I try many cables and then plugged it to a wall charger and it was not.charging then i clean the charging port of my phone and it started to work great but again it started with the same problem.
May the problem be the root? Or i just damage my new phone? It looks almost new and as i said i could install all the thing until root it.
Could you help me?

I would flash a different rom and see if it works then.. Also check all your settings Usb debug etc... Defentily try different roms if it don't work on multiple other roms then it could lead you to believe its hardware related...Hit thanks if this helped. If you have any other issues then message me
I just take it to a rep and fic the problem. It seems like the usb got a problem. Thanks

So I bought a refurb Tmobile S4 from Ting. From day one, when you try to connect to a PC via USB, the computer does not even recognize the phone is plugged in. I have tried 5 different cords on every USB port of 4 different computers on Winblows 7, 8.1 & 10. Thats all 5 cords on all the ports of ALL the computers. I have tried with and without USB drivers, KIES is no go. So brilliant me thinks, "Hey, maybe update the OS". Noooooooooo, says I have an unauthorized modification. So I tried a hard restore.... same thing. I can't root the phone with the MULTIPLE apps, and without USB...
Its a decent phone, I bought a bloody Otter Box for it, I really don't want to get rid of it. Help??
Oh and I'm a noob, techie but I'm more of a PC guy than a phone guy. I'm not just off the turnip truck noob, but don't ask me to make a souffle with the turnips, get what I mean??

You probably already thought of this, but did you try towelroot? It's free, and really worth a try!

Bad USB port on the phone is a bummer! Another thought, have you tried cleaning the USB port with some isopropyl alcohol? Some swabs (don't dunk it, just dab/rub it) might help too.
-AlaskaLinuxUser https://thealaskalinuxuser.wordpress.com
Actually I hadn't tried. Just installed it. Says my device is not supported. *sigh* I've read something about unlocking the bootstrapper (izzat right? ) but it didn't go into explination as it is a part of rooting so why do that manually. There is just info overload and in having trouble picking it the bits I need. Thx tho Akaska
So I got it rooted!! iRoot had an update earlier and it just worked! Now I just gotta learn how to force the stock OS back in! Yeaaa!

Great! I am glad you were able to get it rooted! There is a TWRP installer app in the play store that will require root and flash TWRP to your phone. Once you do that, you can download ROMs and flash them in recovery mode.
