Fire TV Stick wants to update - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

While sideloading Kodi with my Fire TV stick there was a prompt that wanted me to update my Fire Stick. I'm still kind of new to this, only been use this firestick for 3 days now. It was going to update in one minute if I didn't select "remind me later". Figuring out why the updates aren't blocked is an issue that I will have to deal with later because I thought I blocked the three URLs. What I want to know is if an update already downloaded in the back ground and wants to install is the reason I'm getting the prompt to update.

So by reading that I get the impression that updates cannot be blocked. What causes the update prompt, I ask because I don't see it when I initially turn on my stick, it only appears after its been in use for a while. Since I never updated my fire stick at the initial setup, is it just a nag to do the initial first update?

[q] got new AFTV, stuck on updating page after blocking domains

So I just got an AFTV off of eBay and it looks like I have a rootable version (no alternating language to german on the start screen) but after blocking the domains on my router, it still wants to update and doesn't seem to go past that to the initial setup like the guides say. I know some people had this issue, but am confused what my options are now.
Thanks in advance
EDIT: so i saw someone suggest using the dnsmasq option in Tomato routers to redirect the amazon servers to go to 127.0.0.1 which i did. now the screen says it's "trying to update but cannot contact our services. we will keep trying". after a few more minutes its asking me to unplug my power for a few seconds and then try again
Make sure you're NOT blocking "firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com".

Somehow got it to work!
Saw a comment on aftv news about letting it start to download the update and then quickly block one of the domains, and then letting it attempt to install it (and fail presumably). booted up, signed into amazon and was on a rootable firmware! woot!
Unable to update your Amazon Fire TV
I ran into the similar issue with "Unable to update your Amazon Fire TV"
I took a longer route. I signed up for OPENDNS's free service and and blocked the domain names there.
Then I updated my router's DNS seeting with the OPENDNS server and also used KEYWORD block in the router to block all the version of the software like "51.1.4.0_user_514006420". I only blocked the version for which there's no root available. I got all the version from this site

.
After doing all this I was able to move past the "Unable to update your Amazon Fire TV" screen and move forward.
-Apologize I didn't want to hijack your thread but I thought I post my own experience from today.

Wish I had seen this today before setting up a unit..... blocking the 2 urls that update no longer works..... There must be a new server for the updates.
Tried both of those options today, but unfortunately neither worked for me. It simply stopped and said to reboot and try again. Nothing would allow me to get past the download screen. Glad it worked for you though!
Hi
I have now a new ftv2 logedin with amazon account made one upgrade to 5.0.4 rooted it installed TWRP v6 3.0.0.5 installed latest Pre-Rooted 5.2.1.1 ROM for the Amazon Fire TV 2 and it worked, then I though as recommended to make full wipe (aftv guid) to get rid of kingo/king root. Now i still have a working recovery, but cant pass to the register screen, I only get to choose wifi and then "unable to update fire tv screen"
My regular wifi is blocking amazon updates(already have firtv 1 and 2 ftv sticks all rooted)
for testing I deactivated the blocks, didnt make a difference.
used wfi hotspot from phone, also did not work.
then I though downgrading to older pre rooted images could work but no change.
Did I miss something? any ideas thanks in advance
Solution: I had to unregister the Fire TV from https://www.amazon.com then it worked, found it an older xda post,

AFTV 1gen - No Updates, blocked by Amazon?

Hey Guys, hope this Question is not too stupid
Just read the amazon is going to update the AFTV 1gen to FireOS5 soon - so i wanted to get the latest OS3 for my Boxes, and disabled the url-blocking.
Anyhow, its now open for two hours, and both dont find any update. Its running on 51.1.6.1_USER_516010220, so there should be definitly a new version available.
Is it likely that amazon stopped pushing new updates, as os5 will arrive soon? Or is it a normal behavior that it doesnt find any new version after a few hours?
Just want to avoid getting updated to os5 too early, but as my version has still some bugs (like bluetooth-delay) i'd love to see it getting updated to the last stable os3...
The operative word is "soon." It's not out yet.
Well - maybe i asked it wrong?
Its not about when the new OS is out - its about why i dont get the latest OS3
Did you try forcing a check in Settings or were you just waiting for it to auto-update?
Did you try rebooting the Fire TV? I'm not sure if you are actually using URL blocking (as you say) or just domain name blocking (as what is typically described here and on various other sites), but if the latter, the Fire TV may have a DNS cache with the "invalid" IP address.
My AFTV got in September the last Update!
Yes thanks - i guess it was the DNS-caching. After leaving it for day as it was, finally a manual check was successful. Cheers!

I've experienced the same thing. I've powered on an AFTV that has been off for a few months and it doesn't update even though it's on software that is several versions old. I've found that making it forget and reconnect to a network helps get it to find the update. Factory reseting also helps.

Fire TV Cube 2nd gen won't update past 6.2.6.8

Just picked up FTV Cube yesterday. After many reboots and factory resets, I cant get past 6.2.6.8. I know the latest is 7.x. It tries but hangs at downloading system components. At one time I had 2 of every icon in settings. But a FR cleared that up. I try the update without customizing the cube or installing any apps. Only entered my Amazon acct info. I know back in the day you could ADB in and send over the update file but can we still do that and where are the latest update.bin for 7.x? Thanks
Had same problem with Fire Stick 4K, called Customer Support, and they told me to make my smartpfone a hotspot, connect my stick to it and retry. It didn't work for me, (still in 6.2.6.8) but it might work for U. I have read here and in other forums that it is common that same Fire devices would not get the same update, at least not at the same time. When you will get the 7.2.1.2 version, which is based on Android 9, NetFlix will get Atmos support. Hope Amazon will release 7.2.1.2 for Fire TV Stick 4K too...

Is there any way I can keep the Fire TV working from updating it through OTA?

My question is quite basic as I have a rooted Fire TV with ota certs renamed to .bak to prevent updating. So if I were to remain on 6.2.7.1 for let me say a year, would it still work? Because in the past with the first gen stick, the operating system stopped working over time due to a user interface update (Amazon's TV Launcher at the time) and Amazon updating their servers.

I would say no, there isn't a way to receive updates with blocked ota certs
but I guess that 6.2.7.1 will work fine in 2021, server side changes are really rare.
May be we need to update the tz once again, like with 6.2.6.6, but who knows. For now it works^^

Firetv2: need help unblocking updates, unrooting, etc

Hi guys. I have a FireTV 4k box. The 2nd gen one.
When I bought it way back upon release a few years ago, I rooted it, used it for a bit, and put it in a box. Just recently I took it back out and started using it again.
Whatever method I used to root it etc is unknown, as it was afew years ago, and I can't find anything similar anywhere online. At the time, downloader wasn't a thing, and you had to adb in and sideload apps.
I am currently on 5.2.6.3
The box won't update at all.
I adb' into the box, and found SU doesn't work. I was able to get temp root via mtk-su and successfully ran the pm unhide com.amazon.device.software.ota and pm enable com.amazon.device.software.ota commands.
The firetv will now at least SEARCH for updates (where it wouldn't before) but doesn't find any to install.
The manage_recovery command to check status won't run. Says manage_recovery not found.
I'm not sure what to do next.
I just want it back to completely stock.
I'm having issues with apps working, but upon restart of the firetv the somehow get transferred to a non-existent sd card and will no longer run.
Netflix in particular.
Can you guys give any guidance here?

I know you wish to go back to stock but perhaps you may wish to use the new and improved root (Magisk or Supersu) and upgrade your box that way.
The Sloane 2nd generation Firetv Box can now be fully unlocked. This will allow you to upgrade your box to a more recent firmware.
A simple step by step guide can be found here :
[UNLOCK][ROOT][TWRP][UNBRICK] FireTV 2 (sloane)
Read this whole guide before starting. This is for the 2nd gen Fire TV (sloane) Current relase: amonet-sloane-v1.1 NOTE: This process does not require you to open your device if you're already rooted or you have TWRP. NOTE: If something goes...

Hope this helps

That is a good idea, and may work. I'll give it a shot and see what happens, thanks!
Hopefully it fixes whatever bug is causing apps to flag as installed on a non-existent SD card and no longer run.
All I'm looking for, really.

Yeah it's just really old firmware tbh so the cert.zip and/or the ota update apks are probably deprecated.
Goto unlock root twrp unbrick Sloane thread here :

Just have a read through the OP on page one and familiarise yourself. Follow it to the letter and you'll be able to update your box no problem.
If you need any help just ask and someone will be around to help you out if need be.

Is there an advantage of doing this over the pre-rooted rooms flashed in TWRP? I have a rooted fire TV v2 that I have done periodic updates on but it seems like it always has another update to do. Updates are blocked but it pops a message randomly saying there is and update giving 60 seconds to respond or it reboots trying to update. Would this method of root/updates be easier or more up to date?

Definitely unlock Sloane with this new method.
IMO you have FULL control over the box. Also you have more easier management of your root access (Magisk Manager)
OTA can be handled easily either by adb command or use an app such as luckypatcher to disable/enable ota onscreen.
I would recommend this unlock to anyone wanting a more upto date root and fireos.
