SO frustrated with the note 4:( - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I loved my note 4 early on. Fast, VERY fast, solid battery life, and Gear VR which is awesome.
Enter lollipop 5.0 - lag. lag. lag. lag. overheating and can't get more then 10 minutes out of gear vr before it overheats and that's after a factory restore..
WHY is verizon taking so long to push the 5.1.1 update which supposedly addresses many of these issues??? It's making me want to jump ship from Verizon - and from the note series. (doesn't help that note5 doesn't have microsd or removal battery..) and where the heck is root that will let me tinker and try and fix the issues myself?? I can't believe newer phones have true root and this one doesn't!
-mark

You're not the only one. I'm sick of it. Waiting to get rid of my note 4 once I hear about the next nexus devices end of sept. Nexus 6 dropped to 350 on amazon. So tempting. As for 5.1.1, the Verizon s6 just got it! Verizon is absolutely terrible. Basically if you want quick updates and be on Verizon, you have no choice but to have a nexus. And that's what I plan on doing asap.

Yup. They took the best phone and made it useless as far s Verizon goes.
I wasn't having any major lag or heat issues. But I did notice battery life was lesser than should have been. And since I received the phone on OF1 I could not even achieve temp root

Agreed, it's ridiculous
I agree 100%. It is absolutely ridiculous. I've been contacting Verizon and they said they're waiting on Samsung. All I know is that Verizon always takes the longest to update.
I'm trying to keep it at the top of discussion board (how effective, right? lol).

It is amazing how few posts there are in the Verizon Note 4 forum about anything other than hopes and frustrations. Hop over to the T-mobile Note 4 forum, and the place is buzzing with customization and root and activity. Just visiting Verizon's section is totally depressing.
They even have the Note 5 rooted - if you don't care about "samsung pay", which I dont.... there are awesome things going on there. What a difference.
Just sayin.

argh; the fake article from vccorp (announcing 5.1.1 coming out yesterday for verizon note 4) got my hopes up

Having the same issues for about a month straight with my note 4. Phone heats up, lags, reboots on its own. Battery life is crap now, even with a spare battery. This has totally killed my experience with this phone that I used to love. Just ordered the note 5 for me and my wife. Hopefully verizon pushes the 5.1.1 update to fix these issues so I can safely sell the phone without feeling I am selling someone a sub par device.

I'm having the same issues with my phone. I am getting very close to switching to the "DARK SIDE." I've had Android for years and it has just kept getting better and better, but they took a massive leap backwards with Lollipop. I am sick of not being able to use my Gear VR for more than 5-10 minutes without getting the warning and then making me remove the device. The phone has all kinds of heat, lag and hiccups now. I may very soon be going to a 6s Plus.

There have been some people who improved their Note 4 Lollipop experience by doing a 'Factory Reset". Those of us who root our devices know that you have to wipe your phone completely and start over for the phone to work right. This is not just with the Note 4. They all act up if you try to upgrade over an existing setup.
Just do it. Factory reset your phone, start from scratch and you'll most likely have better luck. Of course there are no guarantees but even a small improvement is better than putting up with the problems you're having now.

5.1.1 did fix a lot; I'm using it on Tmobile- It's not Samsung, blame VZW. I feel bad for my homies here as I've been with the Verizon crowd since my Original Droid. The Note 4 on 5.1.1 and custom rom is the best phone I've ever used since android came out. It delivers the promise the unit had in the first place.
I hope you guys get 5.1.1 soon... marsmallow's out in a few more days.

Would you still buy a Note 2?

Hi all,
I sold my Note 1 last week, since it was dying on me constantly and I needed a new one. Of course I couldn't simply downgrade to a smaller phone, and I've received a good offer for my Upgrade. I was going to get the Note 2 for £23 a month for the next two years.
Now I know the Note 3 has just come out, but at it's current price tag (£42 a month +) I just couldn't afford it.
Would it still be a good choice to upgrade to the Note 2 for the next two years? All I want is a solid productive phone with a great battery life, something my Note 1 didn't have.
Thanks in advance!

go for note2 if your budget does not permit a lot is expected with the official 4.3 update and then kitkat rolling soon next year
Let's see, I always brought my Note II with me at work.
And the working hours are 8:30am to 1pm and 2pm to 5:30pm
At the end of my work I still have 70 to 80 battery percent with Mobile Data turned on all day.
So yeah, I would still buy Note II if I had Note I and couldn't afford Note III.
But if you're someone who's itching to try out Note III, sometime along the way you'll be like "I wish I bought Note III"
Anyway, Note II is a good phone, actually almost perfect. You can survive the whole day with this guy.
Aside from battery, it's very responsive and fast.
Plus, it's never bad to upgrade hehe.
Assuming you're not a gadget/phone hungry guy, go for Note II bro.

I agree, the Note 2 is still an excellent phone. I strongly recommend to buy the LTE version (N7105).
On the other hand, if you don't like Samsung's monopolist tendency (like I don't), the LG G2 seems to be a great, affordable option. Could be my next phone (or the Nexus 5 once it's available).
Good luck

Buy a note 2 now. It's as cheap as it will get. Note 3 does not bring much to the table, you still can't see pixels in 720p and you can scale your UI however you like it using a launcher so 1080p on small devices is pretty much useless.
Battery life is ridiculously long comparing it to any other smartphone.
May not be as beautifuly crafted even as a HOX but at least they work.
It's a cheap phone that's very powerful and also does the job of a 7" tablet well. Also there's a neat stylus that does all sorts of cool stuff. Also new update soon including most of note 3's new software.
Get a note 2
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
Go for it, the prices have dropped to reasonable levels too.
You had a Note, so the size will be a non issue.
The only minor regret I have, is that looks and aesthetics matter to me more than I thought it did.
Slap the official protective cover, and I love it again
Thanks for all of your responses guys!
I've decided to take the plunge and have ordered the Note 2
Looks like I'll be rooting it as soon as I get my hands on it
Looks like I've received the 4G Note 2 (GT-N7105)..
Anyone know if there is any disadvantages to this? I don't mind the 4G, but I really do not want battery life to be affected, mainly because I'll be using Wi-Fi and don't have a 4g plan anyway.
Any ideas on whether I should give it back for an N7100?
Thanks!
No way should you give it back. I have the 7105 and don't have a 4g plan either but will maybe get one on my next contract.
Imo the 7105 will be worth more in trade in and your still going to use it non lte so the battery issue is not an issue.
As long as you don't want fm radio keep and enjoy what you got.
Let us know how you get on.

I wouldve recommended the Note 3 if not for that ugly looking bezel.

My two cents:
I have an Xperia Z and a Note 2, and recently bought an S4, after mulling a bit over the Note 3. I found that my Note 2 betters the S4, and beats the Xperia too. The Note 3 for me did not offer any thing new that I could find interesting. The Note 2 is still an awesome device, and I won't be letting it go for a while.
The main plus the N3 has over N2 (for me) is a better display. For my everyday use (office stuff, light gaming, music) the N2 is great, the battery rocks, and the 8mp camera is decent enough (and better than the Xperia's in many aspects - not kidding! ). I would recommend this phone any day!

I have been thinking about getting the s5 since I am on the jump program but I'm not so sure it's a better phone than my note 3.

The S5 is not an upgrade from our device at all, less RAM, slightly better CPU, not enough of an upgrade to jump to that device. now if you were on a s3 then yeah it would be.
None of these newer phones have any must have features or much improved specs compared to the note 3. Depending on how much improved the note 4 is to the note 3 (majorly looking at larger internal storage options and hopefully android 4.5 or 5.0) I might even just wait til note 5 comes out. The note 3 is still "the real phone" to contend with and has lots of staying power.
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda premium
Yea no other device holds my interest besides the note 4. Unless the next nexus device is made by Samsung. Hell even a better idea, Google should make the note devices their nexus devices. Killer specs for eons. Here's to hopes and dreams
The Note 3 is my last Samsung phone for a while. The S5 looks great but it'll be KNOXed and the device tree will lag phone release by many months due to Samsung's anti-developer stance, we'll be fighting Samsung for any progress at all. So despite the best 5" display in a phone and huge battery it's only for the TW crowd.
OTOH HTC's M8 comes in developer edition, no bootloader lock, has prob 80% as good display, sdcard like Samsung, and far better camera too. They don't hate developers iirc. I'd rather support HTC esp considering none of these are cheap hardware.
If you have a Note 3 keep it and enjoy the best phone. If you have a S4 then upgrade to M8. S5 isn't worth it.
The 'All New' HTC One doesn't look as nice as the old one, in my opinion. The original One looked classy, this one just looks kinda regular. Also, the specs really aren't better than even the Note 3, let alone the upcoming Note 4.
As for the S5 (and the One), I don't think I could ever go back to a phone that small. My last phone was the original Note, and now with the Note 3, i've kind of settled into jolly green giant territory and will never leave.
If The next Nexus device were at least 5.5", I might be tempted to switch, but i'm not sure. Probably not gonna happen though.
No newly released, soon to be released, or later this year appears better than my Note 3. Only a Note 4 can make me upgrade at this time.

I also am eligible for an upgrade on the Jump plan next week.
The only current phone that interests me is the Sony Z2, and it does not look like TMO will get it soon, if at all.
Kind of hate to "waste" the 6 month Jump. May just get the S5, then I'll have another free upgrade in time for the Note 4.
BTW, I confirmed with TMO that if you have the legacy 6 month Jump upgrade program, you will continue to be eligible to upgrade every 6 months for as long as you have Jump.
Not sure yet what I will do next week....

I thought the same thing. If we're paying for jump, we should at least use it. I'm jumping to the M8. Seems nice. Then, maybe the Note 4. But if they increase the size on the new note by a lot, don't think I'll get it. Note 2 was big enough, note 3 is bare able. A bigger version would be to much for me

Still worth picking up a note 3

Wait for note 4 boot loader / Knox situation . if it's locked and Knox situation has not changed then either get a note 3 or stay away from Samsung all together . note 4 will have that dual WiFi antenna thing which is the only feature worth getting other wise I do t see them slapping 4 g of ram of 64 GB memory . faster CPU is useless and redundant as of now specially the way google is lowering requirement for their OS. The wrap around screen thing is useless to me because my phone is always encased
OP I was in the exact situation as yours. I've been using Nexus 5 and wanting to get a bigger screen, namely a Note. I weighed in the current trend, and am convinced that Samsung isn't gonna make Note 4 super interesting, so i decided to get a Note 3.
So far I am not disappointed. Touch Wiz has matured and there is no need to deviate from stock based ROMs.

Samsung has been crap this year. I really wouldn't have my hopes up for their next upcoming flagship. After all, it's just a phone. I waited a whole year for the damn s5 and it turned out to be a disappointment. I got the note 3 instead, and I totally recommend it. It will feel huge at first, but you will eventually adapt to the point of no return. After all, it's just a phone.

Really, do yourself a favor and get the 3. I did last month and oh boy, everything is great and no you don't really need to root, I did because I can't live without Viper audio and cerberus and remove bloat to clear up memory, ( not just disable them). Using a custom rom, it was wicked but I've changed to hyper drive rom, both fantastic. So long story short get it, and become happy for ever, until next year at lease.
Or do as I did and get the Note 3 and pay the extra $ for Jump! and when the Note 4 comes out switch

Had it since day one and there is nothing better out there now. No S5, HTC One (M8) or IPhone can beat this beauty and the beast phone. Only the Note 4 can surpass it when it comes out.
You will not regret getting a Note 3. May want to wait till S5 comes out in case you can get a Gear watch bundled for cheap if interested in it.

I kinda agree that there really isn't anything out there better yet. I mean things like 2k display (not needed and bigger battery drain) 2gb ram is a step backwards, and no stylus (if you use it) and the Snap Dragon 801 is only 200mhz faster with the same gpu. So at the minimum I probably wouldn't even look til the 805 SoC came out or 64 bit (which isn't even needed yet).
That not even mentioning someone has to come up with something really innovative or significantly better like the isocell with OIS. At this point, we're really at a point of saturation.

Crossroads Note 4 & One plus One

Give me some pointers. I really enjoy my Note 4. Everything about it. Except what we are all waiting for patiently. The phone runs just fine without it. Well I've always wanted a one plus one and someone has given me an offer on it. Straight trade. 64GB version plus there's tons of support. So question, has anyone experienced the One plus one and what are your thoughts? Thanks.

Honestly at one point I would have given my note 4 for the 1+1 but now after getting lollipop im happy. The camera on this phone is amazing no complaints and the 32gb onboard plus the 128gb memory card i have space isnt an issue. Would it be nice to have an unlocked BL and root and rom? Hell yea, but the phone as it is right now does the job. Hope i helped

I personally wouldn't trade my note 4 for a 1+1. The only phone I'd consider for a straight trade would be a 64gb nexus 6. Your choice really depends on what you value in a phone. The pros of a 1+1 would be the dev scene and that's it. The pros of the note 4 are a bigger/better screen, better camera, spen - if you use it, and possibly battery life. So the pros for the 1+1 are software related while the note 4's are mostly hardware related. The note 4 with root would be a whole different beast!
I came to the note 4 from the nexus world. I dearly miss the dev scene and especially root, but the strengths of the note 4 are just too good IMO.
Yeah...I've been thinking over it non-stop. It's a great phone. Camera and video especially. You're right about root once achieved. The rom flashing can wait, but with root..let the games begin.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
If you're happy getting the short end of the stick.... The Note 4 is valued higher then the 1+1. You could sell the Note 4, then buy a 1+1 and have cash left over for another toy.
if i was you i wouldnt do it... after the update the phone feels much faster and more up to date
Just wanted to chime in unless it's too late but I own both and I wouldn't do a straight trade. There would have to be more on the other persons end. Both are great in their own right but Note 4 is worth more just in resale value. I love the OPO for satisfying my flash urges but switch to my Note for its polish and the camera. If the Note 4 had the dual speakers of the OPO, I'd be done.
Thanks for all the replies. I think I've made my mind up on keeping the note 4. After all its a great device. Does more than everything I need it to do. I was actually out shooting some video in smooth motion..I'm done!!! Amazing!!

Any Nexus 6P owners upgrading to the Note 7?

Been a long time Samsung user up until a few months ago when my Note 5 bricked and needed a new phone. Decided to grab a 6P and it turned out to be a neat little phone. But I dunno, I feel like I miss Touchwiz and most of its features and currently looking at the Note 7. Was curious if anyone else is considering or has made a similar choice.

Yup I have a 6P now. I left from TouchWiz on the Note 4 and decided to see what all the hype was about for Nexus devices and so far it's OK. Good Rom support and root ability but the hardware is lacking compared to a monster like the Note 7. I'm really wanting to come back but waiting to see if bootloader is locked or not. Not sure if a phone that can't be rooted is possible for me.

I'm definitely on the fence about the whole bootloader thing, but I don't think it's gonna be a huge deciding factor for me. Actually reserved a Black Onyx version already haha.

I've had the Note 3, 4, 5, S7 Edge etc... I switch phones alot... Had a bunch from HTC, all the iPhones etc...
The 6P's main strength is the software - mainly the unlocked bootloader and the quick updates.
Although I preferred some of Samsung's software features like camera and gallery and some of TouchWiz's aesthetics.
From a hardware perspective though, that phone sucks compared to the Note 5 or any other modern Samsung device. It doesn't feel as premium, bluetooth issues, EMMC, and a bunch of other stuff that bothered me. So I ended up returning it and going back to the Note 5.
Samsung has been getting a lot better with software, as far as TouchWiz - each version continues to get better. Now that their new head of mobile is a software guy, I think it only gets better.
They have also been pretty good in regards to updates - at least monthly security updates. However, the carriers still slow them down due to their idiotic demands regarding updates and testing etc...
Which in turns affects the user and makes us mad at Samsung when really we should be annoyed with our carriers.
In my experience from all these years of owning many many phones from both iOS and Android.
I think the iPhone and Samsung reigns supreme as far as premium quality, premium flagship devices.
I would consider another Nexus somewhere down the line if they made a nice one but I still don't think (unless Google directly is involved in the hardware) that it will compete with Apple and Samsung when it comes to that premium quality device.
i preordered it, i really enjoyed my note 3 before the nexus 6 and 6p. im hoping the note 7 has rom support like my tmobile note 3 did
I'm coming from a N6P and pre-ordered.

I might get this badboy, pending which versions have an unlocked bootloader, etc.
Using a Nexus 6p and iPhone 6s Plus and going to get the Note 7. It is a beautiful device. Best Buy has them if you want to mess around with one and see if you like it.

Yea same, I DID have it reserved but unreserved it once I read that the Canadians are getting the SD 820 version and not the Exynos like I was hoping. Even Best Buy is saying that its the Exynos version but Rogers and Bell reps are saying its gonna be the SD. Imma wait and see which one it actually is before making a choice.

I'll definitely gonna check out the local one by me and see if they have it.
ZTE Axon 7 here.
Had the note 5, sold it for the N6P, never buying Samsung again.
Go ahead and purchase the note 7 for $800, test its bugs, reboots, memory issues. Then experience some factory resets.
Then you might get an update and within the next 18 moths you will wait for Nugget.
For one note 7 I can buy 2 Axons.
Nexus 6P to P9 Plus to Note 7
I'm kinda on the fence here. I really love my 6p for the unmatched buttery smoothness of the interface and the fact that we'll be on Nougat one of these days already. But honestly I've been missing the gorgeous screen that Samsung offers in their top range products and I also do love the design of the Note 7. I'm a bit afraid though that the interface just won't be as smooth as the 6p and that would definitely start to irritate me. And Samsung's update policy sucks so hard that that's also a factor ...
I wanted to upgrade to the Nexus Marlin by HTC which is due for next month but I don't like the specs too much so far, let alone the design. So not sure yet what I'll do .. But since I'm an update freak I'll probably go ahead and buy the Note 7 one of these days, a year with the same phone is just too boring

Nice. And you'll need 2 Axons. One to use while you're trying to get any kind of in or out of warranty support should the other one need it. Huawei won't even replace a display on the 6P for money - you have to buy a third party warranty. You and I must have had different Note5's. I never had any of the issues you mentioned in a year of using it. You are right about updates but that's more the fault of the U.S. carriers than Samsung.

I never had to deal with Huawei's warranty but I had to deal with Samsung's warranty and quickly learned that with Samsung warranty is only available in the country you buy it ! That might not matter much to most people but it does to people like me who buy overseas. Sucks really hard. But I'll probably take the gamble anyway and buy the 930FD (dual sim) overseas.

Not true. Also the international version has a totally horrible update policy.

It's no secret. It's been that way since I bought my SGS2 gray market in 2011. They really don't want phones sold in one region and imported to another. They won't even repair an international phone in the U.S. if you're willing to pay for it. Some intermediaries (Expansys, Clove, Handtec) will have grey market devices they've sold repaired under warranty on your behalf. For the latter two the warranty is two years. But I agree Samsung's policy is a little Orwellian.
As for service I've been lucky. I dropped my Note5 the same day I got it and shattered the back glass. Samsung's repair center fixed it for $75 and covered the roundtrip shipping and I got it back in a week.

I haven't followed it that closely but I was under the impression they got better - at least in major markets like the UK and EU. I know they're awful in smaller markets and can also be flaky with keeping Asian markets in sync. I was thinking of getting a grey market Note7 to be free of AT&T's "customizations" and specifically to get updates directly from Samsung. If I were too I would have bought the UK version specifically for the warranty coverage. I stuck with AT&T because being on Next buying a phone outright made no economical sense.
yup, Nexus 6P after my note 4 spontaneously bricked (about 5 months ago).
I love it, but It's a lot heavier and i *really* miss one hand mode and the stylus...
Preordered the Note7. Currently have the 6P. I had the Note 4 as my personal device before the 6p. For work I have the G5 and had the Note 5 before. I work in the industry and have played around with the Note7 this week. it's a beast.
The hardware on the Note7 is mind blowing (although they REALLY could have bumped up the CPU, RAM, maybe the battery, the DAC, and FF camera). The software on the 6P wins every single time though. Yes, Samsung has a lot more built-in features. But stock Android has a special feel to it that Samsung just can't touch. I could overlook that though, if the Note7 was smoother with its faster hardware - but based on my experience with the S7 Edge, it won't be. The S7E I have, even though de-bloated, lags a lot more often than my 6P does, and that is infuriating and sad. Also, Samsung needs to pull their heads out of their ass and make a way to unlock the phone without having to press or swipe anything. I HATE pressing down the home button to scan my fingerprint. It just sucks compared to placing your finger there. Also, the iris scanner forcing you to swipe the lock screen away (so now we require button press, a swipe, and locking onto your eyes) is a step in the wrong ****ing direction.
I have Note 5 and 6p, in my experience the Note 5 load apps faster and smoother than the 6p, and i have tried both Developer previews and the stock versions. I stopped rooting since the Note 4. I got 6p because of the looks and the front speakers and the first to get fresh android OS, also as i would be traveling soon i will be using the 6p outside the country. Am on the verge of pre-ordering, i like having to be the first to get these phones, but with Samsung it has thought me many lessons to wait for better free bundled gifts, so am hoping i won't miss out this time if i wait November or December.

Yeah I'm quite afraid that the 6P will be a lot smoother than the Note7 indeed, which would make me regret buying it ... But then again, that gorgeous display is so nice ... Really on the fence here
