Any clues, any one?
That´s a bit tricky. It depends what you are going to do and on what S3 Rom you are at the moment.
For KitKat Rom there are 2 USB Modi for the S3.
USB Storage : Direct connection to the SD card. Windows needs no driver.
MTP : Connection to internal S3 RAM and SD card. Windows needs driver. Look in optional drivers in Windows update for AyunOS driver.
This 2 modi can be chosed, when you connect the S3 viy USB wire.
For Lollipop ROM the USB Storage mode isn´t working right now.
For MTP you should find a driver in Windows update too, but i don´t use Win10.
Last but not least driver for SP Flashtool. SPF needs a special driver (VCOM-Driver). More tricky to install, but you can find information
and how-to on google and youtube.

Thanks for replying! I have the stock OS, KitKat, so it seems like I should be able to connect - I think there must be a problem with my laptop in that case, I will have a look in device manager and event viewer and see if I can figure out what's happening.
Out of interest, what is the status of Lollipop on the S3?
Thanks!

Do you hear the windows sound when connecting the S3? If not try a different USB port on the laptop.
There are 3 official Lollipop ROM right now. All 3 are good, with minor bugs. LL5.1 NewUI is for the chinese,
so a lot of chinese crap with it. I´m on Xtreme from TF right now for 3 days and pretty happy with it.
For more information read the last 20 pages of the monster thread above.
Ok, yes, I get the sound. Trying a different port does yield a slightly different result - if I connect in USB storage mode I see a new drive in Windows Explorer ("Removable Disk (E"), but if I try to open it Windows tells me to insert a disk. In MTP mode I see 'S3' in Explorer, and if I open that I see the phone memory and the SD card. This seems mostly ok, although it can get really slow.

Ok, MTP is working good. If it´s slow, then your SD is slow.
For USB Storage : What file system do you have on the SD?
I don't actually know, is there an easy way to find out?

Jap, either you use an external partition manager or from windows "disk management".
Also you can left click the drive, right click -> properties -> also shows the type of partition.
If you don´t see a partition type under windows, chances are its a linux/android one.
Check it with Linux or download the app "aparted" from playstore, so you can check it
with the smartphone.

I wonder if it's the file system type of my SD card, Windows Explorer shows nothing when I attach it via a USB adapter to my laptop?

Hi guys, was hoping someone on the forums was able to help me out with an issue I am having with my Note 2. I am a first time android user so I might be doing something wrong. Whenever I connect my note 2 to my computer, it gives me a pop up message on my phone.
"Unable to find software on your PC that can recognize your device. Service pack 3, Windows Media Player, version 10 or higher, for Windows XP or Android File Transfer for Mac OS must be Installed."
After getting this message I went to update everything on my computer. I am current on my Service Pack and I downloaded Windows media player 11. I also downloaded Kies on my computer and still, my PC doesnt recognize my phone.
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue? Also, do I need to have a micro SD card to be able to connect to my PC?
I believe right now the pc is trying to read from your device's internal memory but it doesn't have the proper drivers installed.
If you had a micro sd, it would just show up in your file explorer as readable media that you can transfer files to and from.
Sounds to me like you just need proper drivers installed and then you can do the same with your internal storage.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note II (SGH-I317) on the infamous AT&T Network.
That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for your reply. I guess I should just pick up a micro sd card and then try it out again. Thanks again for your help.
No problem. If your browse the developer forum or do a search, I'm sure you could dig up the drivers somewhere. I'm honestly surprised that this device didn't include a disc to install proper drivers.

i to had this same problem, it wouldn't recognize the phone so i had to install and uninstall the samsung drivers 10 times for it to finally see the phone and SD card. after hours of frustration i think i found the issue. uninstall any USB drivers windows may have installed when u connected the phone and go get the installer from samsung. while in the settings menu on the phone under the developer section at the bottom make sure USB Debugging is turned off. then install the drivers plug the phone in after and let windows do its thing and bam ur done. full access to internal drive and SD if u have one installed
Had the same problem and finally found the solution on another forum site. There is a hidden setting that switches USB connectivity between USB Mass Storage and Samsung Kies. The only way to get to the setting is to create a shortcut on the Home screen as follows:
1. Press and hold an empty spot on the Home screen.
2. Choose Shortcuts
3. Choose Activities
4. Scroll down and choose USB Settings
Using the new shortcut you can now switch to Mass Storage mode and your phone will be recognized as a hard drive (even though Windows says it is a Portable Media player). Just double click on it in Explorer and you have access to both the internal memory and the SD card.

How do you press and hold an empty spot on Note 2?
Because for my Note 2, when I press and hold the Home Screen, it will pop up with a box that you only can choose set wallpaper, apps and widgets or folder. SO how to choose shortcuts? Because it is not there?
Please help me. TQ

You can do that by installing a different launcher, for example nova launcher free version. Hope this method might work for you. But did not work on my note 2. I am also still looking for answer.
I'm having the same issue as you...and have tried everything as well...and am about to pull my hair out getting this to work.
The MSS install wizard is bogging down and is taking hours to install this for some reason...I am wondering if Samsung has borked this completely for Vista /XP..
I am open for suggestions
Mac
I've noticed Windows is not able to find the driver for it.
Try downloading the OEM USB driver from Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-I317TSAATT
Disconnect the phone
Install the driver
Connect the phone
Let Windows look and install subsequent updates since the OEM version

I have the same issue and receive the same error message. But only on my Windows XP computers. All my Windows 7 computers work perfectly, but my 64gb SD card connects as a media device, instead of a mass storage device which I could assign a drive letter in XP>
I have tried installing Samsung's USB driver numerous times with no results.
So has anyone found a real solution to connecting a Note 2 SD card to an XP computer as a mass storage device just like any other cell phone I have ever had?

I am also having the identical problem. The Note 2 will not connect to any of the three computers I've tried regardless of the settings I've messed with. It used to connect fine and I'm not sure what happened, but now it just charges and registers nothing on the connected PC. Help.
Usb mass storage mode is pretty much gone at this point. Somewhere someone had the wisdom we only need ptp and mtp. I saw an app in the store that will mount external sd as ums. But that doesn't seem to help with the internal, nor do I know if it translates ext4 into something windows can read. :/

Is there any way how to connect I9195 as a USB mass storage device to the computer, not only as "media device" or "camera"?
You could try SG USB Mass Storage Enabler from Google Play.
It works properly in my GT-I9195.
It needs rooted phone
I don't think there is any other way except to root it.

Did you roll back all old drivers, remove them in registry.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1882942
Also, if you get the MTP error after this, go to device manger "type it in start"
Go to View
Select Hidden Driver
Go To Non_Plug and Play Drivers
Right Click on Hardware Policy Driver
Go To Driver Tab,
Stop this device
and Disable it
Restart Windows ( unplug phone first, disable network card also)
Disable WiFi or network card, (double tap)
Plug in Phone
Allow windows to load the drivers on your phone.
(don't stop this at all)
Look for phone.
Later you can add updated drivers if you would like. Remember windows keeps all old drivers, even if its jacked up. PnP will still run.
This works on Vista and above. haven't tested it on XP.
IMPORTANT
U must re-enable the change to the device manager after this, or each time you reboot it will reload the drivers.
Also if you want to search for old pics (assuming they were on your external card if you had one)
Use Recurva. To do this you will need a mini USB to card reader. They make them as UBS and camera card style. Then mount and recover. If not you got to rip open your phone, take out the HD, and using the correct connector, (use by) get a drive enclosure. It will mount the HD as a external flash drive. But only do this if you don't want the phone anymore.
later and I hope it helps

So what is the trick if this has been ticked the whole time but still won't show up? I've glot CM 10.2, MTP is checked, when plugged in the laptop it shows up at the bottom on the task bar & then when I right click it says Nexus 7.
My device shows up under devices & printers, but not under computer when clicking the start menu on the PC & clicking computer. My HDD, DVD drive & SD card all show up, but no N7 so I can't transfer files.
Am I missing something else?

Please elaborate a bit. What I understood is :
Nexus 7 doesnot show up like an SD card etc but as a mobile device yet you can not transfer stuff ?
It doesnot show up like a drive. For me, on Windows 7, it shows up like a mobile device in other devices with the name "Nexus 7". If i click it , I get into the internal memory. You can not rename folders or transfer files within Nexus(as it is used by the Nexus itself so it can not be changed). However, try copy a file from PC to your nexus. Does that work? If yes, that is perfectly normal. Use a file explorer like ES file explorer to rename and transfer files within Nexus. But Es file explorer has some bugs with JB 4.3 esp with extracting a rar file.
If this doesnot solve it, I remember there was also some settings for it. I can not remember though as I havenot used the latest CM 10.2.

So the first picture is of devices. You can see the N7 is shown, but clicking it only takes me to the info about the device. No way to transfer stuff. Right clicking gives me eject, troubleshoot, properties.
The second is the windows section where it shows the HDD, etc. No N7. I was expecting it to show up to be able to transfer files from computer to the device as in a mass storage device. I did this with the last one where I could see everything on the device.
I have a 600mb file I want to transfer to the tablet & was expecting to just copy it over.

I am attaching my pictures how I see my nexus when it is connected. You do not see Nexus 7 if it is not connected properly or not enabled from Nexus settings.
Does your device charge when you connect to the PC ?
Does your device connect in USB debugging mode ?
Further, go into device manager in My computers and see if there are any question marks on any device? Make sure your device is connected at that time.
Try to connect it to different port or without USB hub if you are using as sometimes, devices do not show up.
Moreover, try to connect your device to the PC and then tick on MTP and then change few options like connect via different methods and see if any usb connection is seen ?
Also, close all other mobile softwares in the background and taskbar (Kies, Sony PC companion, LG, Nokia PC suit) and then try connecting it.
They are many a times culprits. Even try uninstalling their drivers and programmes.
IF USB DEBBUGGING WORKS AND CHARGING, DRIVERS ARE PERFECTLY INSTALLED IN THE PC
YOUR PROBLEM SEEMS TO ME FROM NEXUS SETTINGS.
IT SIMPLY COULD BE A BUG AS CM is still nightly
I hope this helps

May be a CM bug. I just connected my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.2 AOKP & I just transferred files from my phone to computer.
The N7 is connected, charging, debugging works, etc. So i'll keep waiting to see what the deal is with each new CM install.
I do appreciate all of the suggestions. Should have tested it on CleanRom before flashing CM to see if it was working then.

How do I connect my Sony Xperia Z1 compact to a mac? Back in my android days an Android phone could be simply used like an USB flash drive. You plug it in no matter what system and it will get recognized. I know you could toggle between USB mode and some other fancy mode. Now each time I connect my Xperia to my Mac I get „connected to PC- MTP Media Transfer Mode“ (shouldn’t it be MTM- I suppose the P might stand for protocol…never mind) but the phone won’t show up on the Mac under storage. I’ve already enabled USB Debugging under Developer Options because I assumed that would do the trick - nope.
So how can I use my android phone like a normal USB flash drive? I do NOT want to install Sony’s silly itunes rip off software.

That's what I've been looking for BUT
"Only SD Card supported in mass storage mode. Internal storage not available in this mode. Continue?"
WHY????! This renders it pointless since I don't have any SD Card. Is this a Sony thing only or do all Android phones roll like this nowadys? Also I still don't understand WHY i can not access the internal storage? Why does everything have to be so complicated. Isn't there some hack or something to still access it?
So yeh I've set it to Mass Storage, connected it to my MAC and of course nothing shows up. Sigh. This simply isn't any fun at all.

Yeah - the hack is to hack that Mac into little pieces with an axe. LOL. Just kidding. I wonder if newer versions of OSX can recognize MTP? If so, are you able to update your Mac? Or, if you cannot... how about using bootcamp (or whatever the latest method is), install WinXP/7 or something on the mac and you will have the choice to boot into either windows or OSX whenever you turn it on.

Ah I'm sorry mate, I can't really think of a solution apart from giving Sony Bridge for Mac a go. You can drag and drop into internal storage. You don't need to import or sync media.
Dual booting with Windows is an option (the windows program is way better than the mac program) You can virtualise (VMbox is free) or just dual boot. Again it's a pretty drastic step to take in order to do something as simple as access internal storage! I personally have Arch Linux and OS X.
The Sony Bridge for mac has improved a lot. You don't need to do any syncing or anything, you can just drag and drop as if it is mounted like an external disk.
Hey,
I'm just having this amazing phone but i'm a little bit disappointed when I connect it on my mac because I can't use it without "LG PC SUITE"
I can't find it in my finder like an usb storage and so I find it not very practical to use.
Have you any tips to use it like an usb storage?
If u can't install LG PC sure on your mac then install windows on your mac... I am sure u can install windows on your mac
Just use Android transfer for mac from here
no need to install windows for copying files from phone to mac.
Cheers but I didn't say I had a problem to install LG PC SUITE, I have it on my mac... I would just use my phone like an usb storage or usb key when I connect it on my mac and that is the problem, it doesn't appear like a usb storage.

Don't think thats possible with Android on a Mac, Steve Jobs made sure of that. The link I posted above will let you copy/delete/rename stuff on your phone, both internal and external SD, other than that what exactly do you want to do with the phone ?
